I have been coming to this place since it originally opened, then it burned down, then it reopened again. Since it has reopened again I can't stand this place because of the management here. They literally treat this place like it's an exclusive celebrity NYC hangout but they need to remember that it is a hookah lounge in Edison, NJ. Each number below will represent a different trip accompanied by a different horrible experience at Maya.
1. It was 8 degrees outside, I took two steps in to open the door and this D grade bouncer tells me that I can't wear a hood to cover my head. It was also snowing outside. Maya wants to ensure a horrible experience and it starts right at the door. I was going to take off my jacket once I was inside. I just came from outside and haven't even stepped into the place yet and I already get a rude remark from the bouncer.
2. Hookah was awful. Quite possibly the worst. You are likely to get a hookah 1 in every 10 times you go there. So 2 hookah's without fruit heads and two drinks will run you $50. Meanwhile if you go down the street to Sultana or Sherazad then you can get the same for $25-30 They have a bunch of kids who don't know a thing about making hookah. My first set of coals on the hookah and I was coughing up a storm 10 minutes in because the hookah wasn't packed well and clearly the charcoals were burning the tobacco. I asked them for tongs to move the coals around and as per policy they don't give you tongs. So I had to wait 20 minutes until I watched the coal burn away all of the tobacco to crisp. Now at this point you have to change the tobacco because it is burned. What is Maya's brilliant solution to the problem? PUT MORE COALS ON IT. So basically if you don't get lucky with a good hookah then you might as well take a lighter and burn $20.00. At least that will keep you warm longer than the hookah will burn, while the bouncer tries to freeze you. I have been smoking hookah and going to hookah bars all over the world for almost 20 years and tongs are always given to adjust the coals to your preference. One person at the table next to us told the server verbatim that his hookah was sh*t the last couple of times and he doesn't want to smoke sh*t. Surprise, surprise, the hookah sucked and the guy offered to go to the back and teach them how to make it.
3. A friend of mine wanted to have her birthday at Maya. Since Maya looks nice on the interior, we decided to go there. Guess what? You are allowed to bring a cake, the person can blow out the candle, but you can't eat the cake there. Not because they have there own desserts or menu, but another stupid policy. Every other hookah place in Jersey, even restaurants allow you to bring a cake for someone as long as you are giving them business, but not Maya. We sat there with a cake that nobody was allowed to eat. They decided to be flexible and let only the birthday girl eat. So we had one person eating a cake for 10 people, and 9 other people watching her uncomfortably. This makes sense to Maya's Management.
4. We went with five people. Now this was the icing on the cake for me. We had five people and the place was about 85% empty. They have seating for about 4 people in chairs and anyone extra would have to sit on this uncomfortable stool with no back support. So thinking that this is not a big deal, we move one chair and they come and tell us that we can't move the chair. Are you FKING KIDDING ME!!! You have an empty hookah lounge and you can't replace an uncomfortable stool with a chair nobody is using. Again this makes sense to Maya's Management.
The only thing nice about this place is the appearance on the inside. I really want to like this place. I've tried to like this place. I gave it multiple opportunities to like it, but they just have the dumbest management running this place. Maya and Mist are two places that serve hookah but don't understand that hookah is smoked in a comfortable environment, but this Nazi themed management thinks they have it all figured out. They rush to reprimand you at a much faster rate then actually providing service.
The best price, best hookah, and most comfortable environment is Sultana Cafe which is right down the road. It is no where near as nice on the inside as Maya, but you get that luxury feeling and independence to use my own tongs, the ability to move chairs if extra people come, eat food, ask for coal, and smoke a pineapple head hookah that will last for hours over my 6 minute regular head hookah at Maya. I honestly think Maya's mission statement is "Nazi service at a premium price". read more
