Been coming here for years now for hookah as I was not aware of other lounges in the area, but my last experience topped the cake with bad service. CONS: 1. Mediocre, dirty atmosphere. Stained/ripped couches. Could use a redesign for lounge appeal. 2. Service is nice but extremely slow and inattentive. Last visit this month... had to wait 30 mins to get seated, took 30 mins to even get menus (another table called someone over to get us one), and once we ordered we did not receive our hookah for another 30 mins after me having to specifically ask a worker why it was taking so long. The place had cleared out by that point. 3. They used to play club music which gave it a fun nightlife vibe, but in recent times they play it extremely low where it is barely heard. Smoking hookah in silence pretty much. PRO: 4. The food. Menu I have to say is large, fairly priced, and the middle eastern cuisine is actually quite tasty/authentic -- i.e. falafel, lamb, hummus, etc. 5. Interesting variety of hookah. Please be aware of all hidden fees not mentioned. We stopped by Sultana from a road trip. We looked at the menu ordered 2 Hookahs. Upon ordering server immediately informed us that each person must purchase a drink and hookah regardless of preference. We ended up ordering 4. Afterwards- the hookahs were some of the worst made we ever tried- server did not attend to us once since we sat down. My friend questioned why the hookah was bad to which he replied its fine and walked away. When asked for the check, the prices were not what was shown in the menu. I've been to several hookah lounges around the county but this one ranks at the top of my list. They have a superb selection of hookah flavors. An added incentive is their food menu, which they only serve later in the day. Mint tea and Turkish coffee are great accompaniments. Hmm well I've been here twice now in the past couple of weeks. I'm kind of shocked at the low reviews this place has. It's a typical hookah bar..The hookah is pretty good and lasts long. Ive never thought of the place to be dilapidated but I also don't go there to inspect furniture and floors. The hostess is super nice and the Fat Veggie sandwich is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had--literally ! And it's huge..I thought fat was just part of the sandwich name but I could barely fit my mouth over it and only ate half..took the rest home. The only good thing I have to say about this place is the hookah and the little tea pot for my mint hot tea. Our server/hostess absolutely sucked. I think she avoided us on purpose when my friend complained about the cheesecake, and when both my friends asked for water, they were given bottled water, not tap. Weird. Why is this place so janky? Why do I keep coming here even though I know what to expect? I don't know the answers to either of these questions. Anytime I've come here there's been a decent amount of people, so I'm going to assume business is not bad. They should really invest some of that money into cleaning the tiled floors, painting the walls, and fixing whatever the hell is wrong with their windows that makes you not even able to see through them. Yes the hookah is usually good and decently priced, but you come to smoke to be able to relax and chill and you can't really do that in this dilapidated place. I like this place. It's one of the few hookah bars left in the area. The hookah is fairly cheap, and they're very good about coming around and filling you up when you're running low. It has a great Middle Eastern atmosphere, which I prefer when I'm smoking hookah. They have Middle Eastern and non-Middle Eastern food, although the Middle Eastern is considerably better. The hummus is great, and I'm going to try the lamb sandwich next time I go. I've heard good things about it from other people. There are a lot of young kids here, since it's one of the few fun things that you don't have to be 21 to do. They have cards and board games. Hookah came out relatively fast and it was set up very well. There were two lounge areas available one of which was more quite and less crowded. Hmm. Came here to smoke hookah for the first time ever so I didn't really know what to expect but I do know that the service is atrocious. My friend and I were seated at a table for over 10 minutes without being acknowledged and when we alerted the only server up front that we were ready to order, she claimed that she didn't even notice us. Our table was right in front of her... Odd. Then, we nicely asked her for more coals and after waiting another 10 minutes for her to get back to us, we realized she forgot and had to ask someone else. Bottom line: the service here is poor. The waiter has been extremely disrespectful with everyone and came to us multiple times to say we HAVE to order drinks and extra hookahs when we have a group of about 20 people that has ordered food, hookahs, and drinks already. I don't think I'll ever come here again, the place has really gone down. The layout itself is medium sized, but it is nasty! Nothing is clean, there is dust and grease everywhere. They had the TV on CNN... and there were only 4-5 people there (mostly elder, smoking and doing work on their laptops). Then a few other people came in, they were definitely underaged, but probably regulars. The service wasn't that great either, we had to go looking for the guy twice to get our order in. On top of that, we had to get a drink (so we got water, basic). The hookah itself was alright, nothing special... I've experienced better. They also give the hookah out with 4 coals on the side, which doesn't make sense since the hookah is always better with fresh coals. I wouldn't recommend any of my friends to come here, unless they're really craving hookah and nothing else is open. read more

I'm really torn about this place. I love it during the day and hate it at night. It depends on what the purpose is for visiting Sultana. Pros: -Hands down the best hookah at the most affordable price in Central Jersey. $25 bucks will get you a Pineapple Head Hookah and a Drink. - It opens at 12 pm daily. A guy named George working in the afternoon makes the best hookah that you will have in terms of quality. He checks each hookah before bringing it to you. He actually has a passion for providing good quality hookah's. This is something you do not see at places like Maya or Mist. - They have food but the kitchen opens at 7:30 pm. This is something that they could improve on and open earlier. The food is actually really good. - Very relaxed atmosphere to go with people. They try to accommodate as many people as you can bring in your party. If you need to shuffle around or move chairs then they don't mind as long as nobody else was using it. - Very friendly staff that you can tell has a relationship with people going there. - If you want coals you can ask for it. If you are impatient you can go to the back and get it yourself. - You don't feel rushed if staying for an extended period of time. - If you work from home or study, the afternoon is the best time to go because it is where you see a lot of people studying or professionals that work remotely getting things done. - People keep coming back to Sultana. If you were born before the 80's, then this place is kind of like "Cheers". Keep coming here and you will see a lot of the same people and build relationships with them over time. Very friendly crowd. Cons: (NIGHT TIME) - The crowd is turns into younger college kids between 18-20. This tends to get very loud with people blasting there own music. Sometimes it gets unbearable that you can't even talk to the person next to you because one person in the lounge feels the need to blast their music thinking everyone else wants to hear it. That's where I think management should draw the line with flexibility. They should hire someone or keep an iTunes playlist running with moderate volume that allows you to talk to other people. - This place needs better ventilation. At Maya I have actually seen people pass out from lack of ventilation. In fact, the management at Maya has a tally going right now of how many people have passed out smoking hookah. As of two years ago it was at around 20 people. Sultana just doesn't look very clean. They need to update the couches and furniture to give it a neater look. The vents are completely black and you can tell the filter hasn't been ever changed. - They have an HD TV but don't have HD service. A lot of people come here to watch football and basketball games here but then you watch it in non-HD on a small screen. Overall I would recommend this place if you want to have good hookah, casual time with friends, or work during the day. Is this a place I would take my significant other? Probably not, but I would like to if they could just sort a few of these things out. read more

three and a half stars for you sultana... a car full of us trekked to nj to get me a duplicate license (erm... i can't be bothered to change my id from gazillion yrs ago) naturally we were starving after braving holland tunnel traffic... my cousin who lives in the area suggested we meet at sultana's before heading to the dmv... as we got here however it felt like the worlds' end.. literally.. it's like you're going and going and then u make a right in to nowhere and then there's this plaza where sultana looks like a scene out of a horror movie... the place was empty for lunch... e m p t y but we braved it (fearing we might have to go to domino's in the next food plaza over) the good news is that we loved the menu and ordered everything (literally) and the better news is that it didn't suck... really everything including tip cost us a little over a hundred dollars... we also ordered the hookah which was great apart from the annoying turkish / middle eastern mtv nothing else really pissed us off... :- ) yay! i'm not a fan but this place really aint bad read more

Let me start by saying the food is amazing and the decor is very middle eastern (not very comfortable). The place is usually filled with kids and very rarely will you see someone over the age of 22 which is kind of odd because it is very popular in the area for hookah. It was one of the first hookah lounges to actually exist. This is my spot to go for hookah during the day. It is one of the very few places that offer hookah and lunch. The hookahs aren't the best, I would rate their hookah 5/10. Another reason the rating is lower is because the service is horrible. Trying to get coal is like pulling teeth from a tiger. I have to ask multiple times for coal. I usually ask them as soon as I get my coal for more coal. Its one of those places that you have to visit yourself once to really get the feel on the atmosphere and people. read more

A dirty, dingy, dark room with people sleeping on the chairs everywhere. The service sucks, they're slow and forget your orders. The entire place is covered in smut. The chairs, tables, walls, and floors are sticky and disgusting. I felt like I needed to shower as soon as I left. I wouldn't recommend ordering food unless you're ready for a trip to the ER. This review pains me to say this but this place really sucks; the quality level has sunk to a whole new low and I will never come back. Surprisingly it was not always this way. 2-3 years ago this was my go to place to relax, listen to good music, smoke good hookah and be around good people and friends. It was a great atmosphere with an awesome vibe. Change is a constant, but as patrons we prefer that things change for the better. Unfortunately, the change to this establishment has been drastically horrible. This place has become an absolute pig stein, caked up dirt clogging the air vents, un-kept and un-clean tables and chairs, dirty windows, stained couches, and sticky floors. All of the cliques of a dirty establishment are all present here. But is the Hookah good? Yeah it really is! They combine flavors to make some truly interesting and delicious flavors and they use a very high quality tobacco to give you a pleasing experience. The coals are hot, the water fill lines are perfect and the hoses are clear, but the hookah is not the problem. The problem here is the Clientele you are exposed to and the management that allows and promotes the buffoonery you are surrounded with. The only reason to come here is if you want to see a real life version of Larry Clark's movie "Kids". This establishment is filled with immature and misguided youths that are shaping up to be the future, criminals, low life's, prostitutes, and dead beats of America. Profanity and Racial slurs are spewed out with regularity. Underage drinking and violent behavior is present and management does nothing about it. More disturbingly, they encourage it and that is sad. I wish someone would have at least turned up the horrible music to cover up the ignorance I was hearing, but the sound remained terrible and low. I guess this element was always present, however it was probably managed better in the past and with the decrease in overall clientele it is much more noticeable now. BEWARE! I went to Sultana last night for the first time with friends and we had the worst experience. For starters, the place is filthy. I was just waiting for a roach to run across the floor. The chairs and tables look like complete and utter crap. The young lady that served us is clearly in the wrong profession. She was very inattentive and seemed annoyed to be there. My friend ordered the cheesecake and it looked as if it was bought from the freezer aisle at Walmart. This establishment is a complete disgrace. I asked the waitress if they had tap water opposed to a $2 bottle of water and she replied no after hesitating for about 30 seconds. So apparently the place doesn't have running water OR teacups since my mint tea was served in a regular glass that mixed drinks are typically served in. I am unsure how this place is still open...maybe because of the regulars. One of the regulars helped us with our hookah when the server was no where to be found. Stumbled across this spot when my date and I couldn't get into Fire and Ice. It was located in some type of lil strip mall. The other reviews are right about it being cold.it honestly felt like they had the air on at one point which didn't make sense because it was sleeting outside. The place is a bit run down just some tables and chairs which were not comfortable at all. The hostess told us to sit wherever we wanted, and she was also the waitress. The only one might I add. It took her about 15 mins to wait on us and then another 20'to get the hookah. They do not serve liquor so beware. Also, there wasn't any real music playing. Half way thru our visit they played music from nick music channel. Interesting selection considering we were at an adult bar. I also noticed on my way out people were aiming cigarettes. No bueno. HORRIBLE SERVICE, MUSIC & HOOKAH!! My coworkers & I came here on a friday after midnight. The girls working there were too busy flirting with guys after telling them that our hookah hose had a hole in it. We told 1 girl if she could get us another hose & she never came back. We told another girl, complaining about the 1st girl & she never came back. We took matters into out own hands to find. Hookah hose near us & a piece from someone else's hookah who was leaving & replace it ourselves. TERRIBLE SERVICE! The music was being played by a customer in the lounge that had it hooked up to their phone so when they left, there was no music playing. It just ruined my vibe & I wanted to leave. I told the servers if they can put music, they told me they would have to plug it into a phone & asked if we wanted to plug our phones. (Sigh) No comment. DEF NOT RECOMMENDED!!! read more
