The BEST Chinese food in Durango. Seriously people, this place is a hidden gem. Not sure why this place isn't busier because the food is great, the service is always fast and friendly and everything is just chill! My family and I have been coming here for years so we chat with the owners a lot and they are so nice! It's a couple who runs the place and the woman is Chinese so she totally knows what's up. Our favorite dishes are the House special Duck (so yummy and where are you going to find duck in Durango?), mongolian beef, curry lamb and kung pao chicken/vegetables. My sister really likes the sweet and sour pork but I tend to like the more savory items. The wor-wonton soup is GREAT! Lots of wontons and vegetables and it tastes great with the spicy mustard that is on the table. The menu is HUGE so you can find whatever you want on here. You can also order in and pick it up if you don't want to eat in, but I like to eat there and relax, get some hot tea and enjoy my food. We ordered to go since you can't dine inside. Our place is about 20 minutes, and I hate food sitting in closed boxes for that long as it gets soggy and stale. I toughed it out, and it was still good even after sitting in the box for that long. The sesame chicken was tasty. Not the best in the world but for a mountain town, and sitting for that long I was very impressed. The egg rolls were also surprisingly good. The won-tons SUCKED! They asked if we wanted vegetable or cheese won-tons off the bat and I thought that was very weird. We said vegetable as I have never even heard of a cheese won-ton. It literally had nothing inside it. I'm not sure if it was supposed to have vegetables or what but there was nothing. So, we essentially paid for won-tons stuffed with vegetables and got more of a tortilla chip..... That was very disappointing. Also makes me curious to what we would have got if we ordered the cheese instead? Great Chinese place in Durango! We were in a mood for Chinese food for our vacation and found this place on Yelp. We were impressed with the quality of food we got and the price. It was very reasonable. The food came out fast and delicious. The owner was super friendly and welcoming. We were too hungry so forgot to take pictures lol. We attacked our food fast and they were gone quickly. I loved the dinner options on the back of the menu (forgot the names) that u got to have a soup, appetizers, and entree. Good deals. We ordered duck, Twice Cooked Pork, and chicken fried rice. The spicy level 0-5 and I did 4 on the pork and it was perfect (for me). Everything was delicious. I want to start out with we love this place. We eat here often. Their soups are fantastic, their food is wonderful and the people that run it are extremely nice. We did take out and order one of the family dinners and it said the price was $12.95per person which was what we were looking at spending. Well when we got there to pick up our food and pay it was over $100. I said it said on your online menu that is was $12.95 and they said that was old price the new price was $18.95 ‼ I said that was false advertising, but they did nothing. I love the May palace, I can eat their sweet and sour shrimp for days! The space is very wide and they have a lot of booths for at least 6 people to eat with, although 4 people in a booth is ideal if you like arm room. They have a lot on the menu and many dishes to try out. read more

Best Chinese food place in town, easily. The house special duck is a great value- a sort of stewed duck with a lot of meat. I also order mo shu dishes with rice pancakes and duck sauce, and all have been good. Some other dishes I haven't cared for. Volcano shrimp, a spicy sweet fried shrimp dish is pretty good as well, a nice alternative to the usual sweet and sour or General Tso dish. Stopped in Durango for dinner on a road trip and decided to give this place a try, so glad that we did! The prices were affordable, and the staff was friendly and helpful! Bathrooms were very clean and comfortable as well. Now onto the food: The chow mein was fantastic, so were the kung pao vegetables! Also got the egg flower soup which is some of the best I've ever had, loaded with vegetables and the broth was a perfect consistency and flavor! Really disappointed with the food we ordered tonight. We ordered to go. First we were missing sweet and sour sauce and spoons to eat our soup. The hot and sour soup was really heavy on the vinegar. Vinegar was all we could taste. The sesame chicken, orange beef and twice cooked pork all looked like leftovers from a lunch buffet. Our appetizers were greasy and the shrimp tasted of chlorine. Eh... not good and won't go back. Being a mountain town I definitely wasn't expecting high class Chinese but this was bad. I ordered a simple veggies dish with a light sauce and asked if they could do a honey walnut shrimp since they had other honey walnut items. The walnut shrimp came out in a brown sauce which I have never had before and it did not at all taste like honey walnut shrimp. It was ok but not what I was wanting or expecting. The veggies were probably the nest thing there. And I'm not saying I fully enjoyed it, it was just the best thing we wasted our money on at that place. Simple veggies with a basic sauce. Decent size. We also got the Kung Pao chicken which basically tasted like the sauce that was used in the honey walnut shrimp. Chopped Cubed pieces of chicken and veggies. Reminded me of cafeteria quality food. This was the best Chinese restaurant experience I think I have ever experienced! I was in the mood for Chinese, so my cousin, who I was staying with, took me here. The service was amazing and the food was absolutely remarkable! I highly suggest trying the sweet and sour shrimp: shrimp covered in delicious cherry red, sweet and sour sauce. The tangyness of this delightful sauce wants to make your taste buds dance, so make sure you keep your mouth closed so you're taste buds don't fall out! Unlike some Chinese restaurants, the food doesn't make you feel sickly. Afterwards you feel awesome, so you can dance like those taste buds! read more

I have weighed back and forth between 3 star and 4 star for this place, and I settled on 4, as with the principles of rounding, 3.5 goes to 4. I grew up in Durango, and I remember when the May Palace was at the North end of town, and it was an amazing restaurant, and when they moved downtown everything about it seemed to diminish. That said, I am trying not to hold that against them, and reading a couple other reviews sort of helped me with that. If you take it for what it is, they do a good job. The service is friendly, there is always a table, the prices are reasonable, it is right on Main Street downtown, and the food is pretty good. The May Palace will always hold a special place in my heart, as it was one of my Dad's favorite places, in fact when my Dad was dying from cancer it was the one place he wanted to still go to, and the last time I ever ate out at a restaurant with him was the May Palace, so yes, I am a fan. read more

I walked in to try their $6.95 lunch special, and ordered the vegetarian Kung Pao with fried rice and hot and sour soup. The Kung Pao was delicious. I believe that the sauce set it apart. I'm not a vegetarian, but I didn't miss having meat in the dish, and I liked the extra veggies in it. It was great food for a very reasonable price. It was 3 o"clock and thus not very crowded, but the service was quick and friendly. On an incidental note, if circumstances allow, chat with the owner. She is a very nice lady. Traveling from Arizona, we did alot of searching on Yelp! to help guide us to great places to eat. We really appreciated the high marks May Palace was getting, we needed to see for ourselves. From the moment we walked in we were greeted and given menus and took our drink order. Really nice place and you can tell that locals really like it too. I ordered vegetable fried rice minus the soy sauce since it has gluten in it. After we gave our order our server, possibly the owner came by and asked if i had a allergy to gluten and i said yes, and she said, oh well you should have mentioned that, we have lots of options for you. Because my dinner was already in process, i just went with it, but the lesson i learned was not just assume that restaurants don't know what gluten is or have a gluten free menu. I guess i didn't feel like going down that road and had my heart set on my vegetable friend rice with no soy sauce. The feel of May Palace was warm and we feel like we have made some new friends. While in Durango my daughter had a craving for Chinese. After browsing Yelp we decided to go here based on the reviews. We were here for lunch on a weekday and they had a huge list of lunch specials for 7 bucks. (This is a great deal for Durango!) After a frustrating, though ultimately successful attempt, to find parking, I walked through the door of this establishment not having had good Chinese food in too long. I am pleased to report I can no longer say it's been too long. As is often the case when traveling, I ordered my food to go. Therefore, I paid little attention to the decor. Beef Broccoli is one of my all-time favorite dishes and when I say I've probably eaten my body weight in fried rice a thousand times over you'll understand my affinity for the dish. Went there for lunch we ordered almond chicken and it wasn't what we expected from an almond chicken the owner or somebody came out and talk to us very rudely and told us that we should've ordered cashew chicken.
