Dear Mr. Trumbull,
After years of positive word of mouth reviews I decided to try Trumbull Kitchen. Clearly it is a popular place on a Friday night as there were people falling out of the doorway as we entered to sign in for our reservation, picture opening a bottle of club soda too quickly. As I walked in I glanced at the atmosphere, somewhat decent size standing area in the bar for those either waiting for a table or just out for your cliche Friday night happy hour after work. Not that there is anything wrong with that! Trumbull Chicken is home to many tables with which patrons are able to order meals and sit with long lost friends, co-workers, and lovers. In an establishment that is fighting for real estate in Hartford, they do a very nice job of strategically placing the dining area to best facilitate our dining experience, although the tables are close, I wouldn't otherwise say they are too close. My group however was sat in the middle of the rear dining room at a round table and a couple of times a few of the waitstaff walked over our table to get to another secret chamber of diners perhaps long forgotten. Our waiter, although an extreme gentleman was partially non-existent for the duration of our time together. We didn't see him much and at times I missed him, I yearned for another drink, or another bottle of delicious Pellegrino with which he made certain he poured for us whenever he came back. For my drink choice I had the Big Boy Manhattan(R), it wasn't all that large, and for $11 one would think it would be placed ever so lovingly in front of me in a Big Gulp cup, but alas no, it came in what resembled an old style champagne chalice and looked to be about 4-5 ounces or so by volume. Granted!!! They did use Woodford Reserve which is absolutely one of my favorite bourbons but still, why use something so delicious and hide the flavor with other mixes? Anyway... with the addition of orange bitters it was quite tasty, I would've ordered a second but I just couldn't bring myself to paying more for a drink then my sandwhich, ammmiright!?! For dinner I had the cheese burger, Robert Irvine would be disappointed, although cooked very well done, not well done, I ordered medium rare and it came out vey well done, ugh... it came out cooked very well, it was perfectly medium rare, well done! But as Robert Irvine would've said, "eets gaht nooo seasoneeng, chefff get our here!!!", sadly it lacked flavor, a good texture but flavor is so important. I asked for a side of mayonnaise and the food runner said he didn't think they had any. At this time, my body froze, my eyes locked straight ahead eyelids open to max, I started to sweat and contemplate what he just told me me. As I stared the person I happened to unknowingly look upon started gesturing to me and I was reminded it was rude to stare. I quickly snapped out of this trance as soon as the food runner returned with some mayonnaise, I called him a liar and we giggled together for a moment. I ordered a side of mashed potatoes, as I dissected the ingredients in my head I quickly came to the conclusion they were made with potatoes, and water... nothing else, and this saddened me, mashed potatoes are so easy to make delicious. A fellow friend ordered the chicken sandwich, it was all right, and another ordered the pressed chicken, it was again, all right. For dessert I tried the Capote Cake, or was it Camote? It was Camote for sure, why can't we just call it carrot cake as that is essentially what it is?
Here is where I am torn, the prices weren't all that excessive which is really conflicting to me with how to really rate, for the experience, and the atmosphere it wasn't too bad, and I don't know if it was just a product of how busy it was? I'm not going to go in and give it a five star rating because everyone else is and due to the name. I will be back on a less busier night, if there ever is such a one and try it again. Again, I am no professional critic so you must take this review with a grain of salt as I think taco bell is wonderful and will eventually win the restaurant wars as it did in the movie Demolition Man starring Sly Stallone, but I digress, try it for yourself, write a review, share your experience! Until my triumphant return, happy dining and may the fork be with you!
Regards,
