Owner was very helpful in picking out what I needed to go snorkeling. Educational tips, too!

I am displeased with Oceanic Ventures. They know that I live out of state. When my order came in,…read morethey just sat on it for a month or more. Did not send it, did no call me, nothing. Then they charged me $22 tax, even though it is being sold out of state and there is no sales tax (eventually got him to say he will remove this charge, but I'll believe it when I see it!) THEN he charged me another $30 to send it UPS Ground (which appears to be $10 on UPS web page). He says the rest is his handling fee (Really? First you refuse to have it drop shipped, then charge me $20 to simply forward the mask that is already boxed in the shipping box it arrived in. Some seriously heavy lifiting, I guess, as it must weigh at least 6-8 oz!)

The trainers are fun, entertaining and supportive. Oceanic Ventures actually cares about your diving experience and it shows. I was greeted by enthusiastic staff members and repeat customers. It was a nice southern feeling in the air and everyone is knowledgeable about everything a diver needs. From equipment, diving spots and more, this place is a one stop shop where the customer is #1. My instructor has been on at least 300 Diving Excursions and was very welcoming!! You don't have to be an experienced driver or a Olympic swimmer just have an open mind about the process. Everything about my experience was pleasant. I enjoyed myself tremendously and I hope to go on a diving excursion on my own in the future.

Their DM candidates they had helping the class were weapons grade narcissists who both admitted they did the same shore dive 50 times to meet the minimum dive requirements, they said this openly! We had one decent instructor, the other who finished the course was simply NOT good at being an instructor. I then decided on a quote for gear with them and when I went over it, line by line, they were quoting higher prices than what was listed inside their shop.... seriously? Finally, I took a brand new tank, new VIP and O2 cleaned, to get it filled by them, but they insisted on it being O2 cleaned, despite it having a well known shops VIP sticker on it stamped as O2 cleaned, they clearly want to scam you out of more money. We've since moved on in our SCUBA careers as technical dive masters and now venturing into closed circuit diving; however, it wasn't without having to basically start from ground zero with another instructor to retrain us. What made me go back and write a review about this from our experience years ago is we have run into divers certified through them on the boats here in South Florida and they suffer from the same garbage training. My best advice is to avoid this place, in fact just avoid all SCUBA shops in Texas and train somewhere in Florida where diving is more prevalent and you have higher quality instructors to choose from.

The instructor on the other hand, was unfocused, unwilling to get into the water, belittled us every chance he got, and learned nothing from him but to relax. There were moments where he left a class of nine students to teach a overlapping swim lesson... for an hour. This is just one instance where he left us unattended. The only reason we passed was a student was getting her certification and she was knowledgeable in the water. I wish no one this abominable experience, unless they train some new instructors and made sure that they did their job well instead of taking a back seat.

Unfortunately there were too many rental equipment issues. During the first non-pool (lake) dive my tank started gushing air uncontrollably right before jumping off the dock. This was apparently due to a busted O-ring. I understand things happen but this was extremely disconcerting as I was about to enter the water for my first "real" dive. Other people in my small group had issues as well, including someone who had a leaking secondary air regulator. This was inconvenient for the PADI skills drills (practicing switching to secondary air) but would've been a real danger if there was an actual emergency underwater. I also don't understand why they require you to buy weights for the PADI course. I just assumed that it's something all divers need to have because I didn't know otherwise, but in reality I'll never use them again because use of dive weights is included in the cost of virtually all recreational excursions. No one travels on vacation with 10-20lbs of weights in their suitcase. I spent ~$150 on weights when they could've just rented them to me. On a positive note, the shop staff was very patient taking the time to help me find the perfect fitting mask, fins, etc. If this place is convenient to you I recommend it due to the quality instructors, otherwise I wouldn't go out of my way to take classes here. And if you do, definitely look to buy used or cheap dive weights elsewhere because a weight is a weight and you'll never use them after the class.
