I've been sick for many years and tried this place out, as I am trying desperately to find answers. I booked an appointment with a female practitioner, who like every male doctor before her, said I was just depressed. I took matters into my own hands and when I called back to say I think I have figured out what's going on, I don't know. I felt like they were on the other end going "derrrrrrpppp." I saw the doctor in September and I called today to get medication for the depression they diagnosed me with and they said oh sorry we can't give you medicine because we gave you a referral (and I have to wait months to get seen). They said I would have to pay for another visit to get medication. What a bummer this place is. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Maxa for many years. Dr. Maxa Misdiagnosed me. He spent very little time with me as I was just a "number". The most recent experience was a nightmare! I sat for over an hour before check-in. The rude and unhelpful front office charged my co-pay 4 times and would not issue a credit. When asked for a referral for a Specialist, his office refused to give me the referral (Insurance requires) before I can see one. I called his office more than a dozen times to no avail. The office staff is rude and hung up on me. Very unprofessional. I thought the oath of a doctor was "Above all, do no harm". I have been sicker since seeing him and it's IMPOSSIBLE to get a follow up with Dr. Maxa. I will see a new doctor and value my health over the abuse of Dr. Maxa and his rude staff. Please do not go to this practice unless you want to be "harmed" or get sicker! read more

I want to leave a five star review because of the Remote Patient Monitoring they provide my mother. She has ample medical conditions that cause high blood pressure however, they work with another company called Care Coach who provides a Blood pressure machine for my mom and someone from their company is my phone nurse. They are my right hand when it comes to medical questions, concerns, and getting back to Maxa. I love this program and I am so glad that I have found them and they work with Care Coach that all of the providers work with. I am so grateful and thankful because she gets to be at home more often instead of in and out of hospitals and offices. I love Maxa's office. read more

Absolutely a garbage excuse for a medical practice. If you value yourself, your health, or your finances, you'll go literally anywhere else. This is a business focused on nickeling and diming the sick and injured. I have scoured the entire metro area of Atlanta and have yet to find a practice more disgusting than this one. They will find any way they can to add "additional screenings" and "additional services" and are LIGHTNING QUICK to write prescriptions that don't work. That's so they can schedule a follow up appointment, bill you for it, try another medication and repeat the process. This business should be investigated for fraud. read more

I have went to this practice FOR YEARS! I absolutely loved them but they have run away all their decent doctors. The front office receptionist has always been rude but I looked past it because of Dr Laura, Morgan and Alex. They have gone downhill and only care about their dime and not the patient. They rush you in and out and don't listen to you at all. I came in on my very last visit with pelvic pain and Dr "Ben" told me I had an STI without any tests or explanations and HUNG UP ON ME IN MID QUESTION!!! I was so scared and immediately went to a specialist gynecologists' and had a full look over and panel and I had a ruptured cyst! I was told it was SO unprofessional for a doctor to tell a patient that without a ultrasound. Ive heard good things about Dr Maxa, but with his name on the practice he needs to take a look at his practice and how his doctors AND his patients are being treated. I would NOT recommend this practice to anyone anymore. read more

i have had dr. maxa as my primary doctor since 2004. he and his nurse, pat, have been so kind to me. i live in lawrenceville in a retirement community and it was become difficult to get a ride to the duluth office. this week, as i sat in an exam room, i had to tell him that i needed to find a suitable doctor in lawrenceville. i did this with a large lump in my throat. i felt as though i was telling old friends goodbye and it was tearing me up. if you ever have doubts about finding a great doctor in the duluth area. hop on the maxa train. you will not regret it. ron kline read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLINIC!!! First impression? The receptionist is rude, cant smile and has no concept of customer service. She must have something on one of the doctors, because i cant understand how she still has a job working in health care. My elderly mother was there for an annual wellness check, which was covered by her insurance. In the end they ended up charging my mother AGAIN for ONLY mentioning her medicine., which apparently isn't allowed, and if you do then they charge you for it. True story, just happened. Sneaky and deceptive are these people. Stay far away from this office and their doctors. And make sure you read everything you before you sign. Customer service and honestly left a long time ago. I went to Maxa in April, 2018, based on a friend's recommendation, and I am finally getting around to writing my review. (Sometimes, I procrastinate.) Anyhow, I had a cold and/or sinus infection, and just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything worse. When I got there, I told the receptionist that I wanted to be seen by Dr. Maxa. When they took me to an exam room, someone took my vital signs and other information. I assumed that she would give this information to the doctor before he came in to examine me. However, a few minutes later, a nurse practitioner, not the doctor, came in to examine me. She began to take my vital signs and the same information that the previous person had just taken. It was a redundant waste of time and showed poor communication. (I don't think this was the nurse practitioners fault. It seems more like an organizational problem.) My heart rate was 91, and I asked about it. The NP said that it was in the normal range, and we should wait and see whether it hits 100 before we worry about it. I thought, why wait until it's to that point before you check it out? Otherwise, the examination was OK. The NP ordered bloodwork. I never saw the doctor, as I had requested, which was frustrating. By the time the NP finished with me, I still felt bad, so I didn't feel like asking to see the doctor and waiting around any longer. I just wanted to go home and get in bed. I know that these days, for common issues like a cold or sinus infection, someone other than the doctor often does the examination. Then if it's something serious, the doctor would look at it. I went to KP for years, and sometimes I saw a doctor for an exam and sometimes it was someone else. In this particular case, however, I wanted to see the doctor, and I asked to do so, but never got to do so. (The bill was $241, IIRC. It included bloodwork. I ended up paying $170, with Anthem paying $71.) read more

Yes, I was a patient with Dr. Richard Maxa. His front staff if very unprofessional. They lack knowledge, I have called and made several attempts to speak to doctor and no luck. That is a very complex office. To many chiefs and no Indians. Everyone is very unprofessional. They stated that they center me a letter saying I needed to find other means of seeing a new physician. Never received letter. They said it was certified. Never received. If it was certified and I didn't get it they could not who did. They had no answer. They over bill. The rudes people from that establishment is a Stacy and Christy. I would not recommend this Practice to anyone. read more

I live in Lawrencevile, but I drive all the way to Duluth to see Dr. Maxa because he's just the best. And by that, I mean that he is a truly gifted diagnostician. I first became familiar with him because he was my mother-in-laws doctor. She had a very rare, often misdiagnosed (Hydrocephalus) condition, that he deduced. He was right on and probably added a good ten years to her life, and made the quality of her remaining life immeasurably better. After witnessing this and seeing the cheery attitude and consummate professionalism of the entire staff, and their meticulous attention to detail, I decided to switch doctors. Now, my wife (who runs a pediatric practice) has also switched to Maxa. And Dr. Maxa is always cheerful, concerned and thorough. Everything a doctor should be. I really like Dr. Maxa. He is always friendly, smiling, and he is a thorough tester. Unlike many docs, he proactively tests for Vitamin D levels and things that other docs might gloss over. I found out that I was very low and he put me on a prescription supplement to fix it. He has a busy practice, but he will graciously answer all your questions. He looks very much like a soap opera doctor as well with his great hair and super smile. read more

I would not recommend this practice where front office people are setting the policies and blocking your route to the Dr. I had one interaction with Dr. Maxa and I found him to be knowledgeable and friendly. However, I can tell you that this office has a big problem with physical exams that all insurance programs promote or even require. At my work to stay in the platinum wellness program you have to have an annual physical exam. I called to schedule one for my wife and myself and since my wife was a new patient that would not see her without a paid for office visit first even though she has no ailments are health issues. It seems this practice has fallen into the trap of see the doctor, get a pill, pay the bill and go away and come back when you need a refill. Doesn't work for people who are healthy. read more

As I have not been into this facility, I am leaving a review on how this office treats their new employees. 2020 into 2021 has been a challenge in the first place in every aspect, we need hope and faith that things will only get better, as we continue to push through these hard times. But for this facility, that is not what they are standing for. A woman was hired at this facility, 2 weeks ago, yes 2 weeks. She was hired to do a job that did require training and support from this team. She was promised training and support. Within the time of her employment she received dirty looks from the staff, the woman that hired her did not give her the training. After only 2 weeks she was terminated, because they didn't have the time to train her. This employee left a stable job, that she worked at for 3 years, to learn and help support this office, just as she did with her prior employer. Not only this, but we are still in a pandemic, finding those that want to work in this day in age, is hard. What this facility did, to this woman alone, they left her with no income, no support in helping train her, but left w nothing in the end, when all along she was wanting to leave this facility with the support it was needing. This facility terminated a mother, that had to come home to her 4 kids and tell them she lost her job, because "they didn't have the time to train" her. Absolutely disgusting. This company should be ashamed of themselves. While you are out watching your son graduate, plan his party, this mother will be at home searching for a job, praying to make ends meet, because of what you did. Do not work for this employer, they only care about the staff within and refuse to help others grow. This employer is what is wrong in this country today. read more

I've been going to Maxa Internal Medicine for many years and can honestly say that their staff is some of the best in the medical profession. Laura Van Hook has the best bedside manner and treats her patients with the utmost care and respect. Have to agree (but maybe not as vehemently) about the comments on the front office and staff. They are humorless robotrons. I also have shown up after making an appointment and been told they did not have me on their schedule. I know I made the appointment, but even sillier is that I signed in when I arrived and no one bothered to notice until 45 min after my listed appointment time. I left a year ago and learned just how much better other practices are about scheduling, communicating and customer service. read more

I called to make an appointment, but when I got into the clinic, the reception told me that I'm not be scheduled for any appointment. I was ahead of schedule 25 minutes. And I waited over an hour to see the doctor. My first impression of this clinic is "perfect". And the reception said they can't explain why I was not be scheduled! read more

I like this practice and the service I receive when needing to see a Doctor. It is infuriating that they constantly change the age requirements. Website says 14 yrs, multiple calls over the last 6 months and the age moved to 15, to 16 and now 17. Entire reason we selected this practice was for our family, now I'm back to driving all over due to a lack of communication - not what you want with a medical practice. I've been going to this office for years ... but am probably not going to anymore. In the last few years, they appear to be have become fixated on money rather than healthcare. They've shorted prescription refills (one out of several and of course it's the important daily one) and then say you must come back in for an office visit before they'll provide more refills. They've charged for lab tests that they didn't tell me they were going to run. Last week I went in for my physical and they were supposed to call in four prescriptions; they called in one. I had to call back and they said they would call the others in. (Of course, no one apologized for the error.) When I picked the meds up they had only called in 5 refills not 11; that means they want another office visit in six months that I will have to pay full price for (don't have a co-pay but they don't care). In all of the years I've gone there I've only seen Dr. Maxa once because he's never available. I always see a PA and it's a different one every time because they can't seem to keep them on staff. It's obvious at each appointment that they've not reviewed your history even though it's all right there in front of them; they haven't even looked at the results of your last visit! Terrible service indeed. I visited this clinic on July 28, 2017 for an annual physical. Worth mentioning, is that this was my first visit to this clinic. Prior to my visit, I called and SPECIFICALLY told them that I wanted no other extra service, besides whatever they offer on routine annual physicals. Well, they really didn't heed to my request. On my day of visit, the receptionist wasn't very friendly and polite, to say the least. She came off as very cold and unfriendly in her interactions with me. When time came for me to see the doctor, I was offered an Physician Assistant (PA). Mind you, I chose this clinic as a result of feedback I had received on Dr. Maxa, not this PA. During my visit, this PA (though friendly) would ask a plethora of questions, then leave the patient room for a few moments - as if, to go seeK advice from a real doctor on what to do. When time came for me to leave, I was slapped with an unexpected bill for $175 because according to the lady who took my payment, "the answers to my questions altered my visit type from a routine visit to A regular doctor's visit." Thus, my insurance wasn't going to pay for the service. I asked her a million times if that $175 was going to be the last bill I ever received from her. Of course, she lied when she said yes. A few weeks later, I received another silly bill for $127. I called back on 8/30/17 to inquire about that bill, but only to be given some asinine explanation which made no sense. I called the clinic to make an appointment with doctor Maxa. The lady who answered the phone told me Dr. Maxa is not available and instead I can visit the other doctor. I agreed and I arrived half an hour before my appointment. The medical assistant examined me as usual then instead of vising any doctor one the physician assistant examined me . I asked why no doctor and he said I was not supposed to see any doctor. I was charged full fee to visit a physician not an assistant. This is a type fraud/cheat. I am very disappointed and when I claimed the lady simply told me I can call and make an appointment with Dr Maxa for the next time! I asked if my blood test and other test would be checked by who and she said by that physician assistant. I did not want to see only a physician assistant but a doctor. I was charged for a doctor not for a nurse. This is not acceptable. It seems they are a business office not healthcare center. read more
