PRESS RELEASE May 26, 2017 FMCSA CARRIER TIE DOWNS With regard to the recent exemption granted to the IITR petition, the intent of the petition was to clarify what is stated in 49 CFR 393.128 pertaining to the securement of automobiles, light trucks and vans and to address the use CFR 393.112, a general cargo rule which law enforcement was using to cite towers, disregarding the intent of 49 CFR 393.128. To clarify, the industry standard is a four point tie down, two non-adjustable tie downs attached to the rear of the vehicle and then two adjustable chains used to secure the vehicle. A winch line is not a securement method. It is a good time to review your cargo securement methods. Always take the time to properly tie down and secure your loads.
