It was a nice sail on their catamaran but the price was on the high side. It's advertised $145-185, and we paid the $185. Compared to the other excusions I've taken part in on the islands this was expensive. If it's at full capacity thats $1,110 for a 2 hour sail. Maybe he's expecting the guests at the Fairmont who are used to paying high prices for their rooms at those resorts. Looking at the calendar he would probably have more business if prices were more reasonable. read more

We had booked this tour for the end of May while on vacation. Two days before the tour we received a text message from Brody stating the tour was cancelled. Also stated a full refund would be processed within 24 hours. After arriving home 3 weeks later, the refund still had not been processed. No response from the company after calling, emailing etc. We left several messages for Sage, but never any kind of response. Issue was referred to the credit card company to handle since no response from company. Be wary of dealing with them. read more

Me and my wife went out on this snorkeling/sailing trip they cancelled the first trip due to high surf and that's Ok because we went out the following day and conditions were perfect . It was us 2 on the boat plus the 2 crew, those guys I could see us hanging out with they're that cool. The Hawaiian culture stories were great the snorkeling was a lot of fun. We snorkeled for 45 min or so my wife snorkeled for the first time and had a great time. They showed us some celebrity homes to wrap up the tour and we made it back to the beach and I helped get the boat out of the water and hosed off the sand and ate some fresh apple bananas that sage just picked from a local tree. With a beautiful setting like Maui, it's hard to not enjoy a sailing trip! Prior to the tour and during it, we had a good experience with Sage and his team. My sister booked 2 separate cruises to accommodate our large group. At the time of booking, the tour was advertised as 3-hours and promised digital photos of the tour. On the first day, with Sage, we got good information about Hawaii's history and the trip lasted 2 hours and 20 mins total. We noticed it was shorter than advertised, but we let it go because it was a nice time. On the second day, Dave was in charge. The group enjoyed but were back to land within 2 hours of departing the beach. Neither group got photos either (which no one cared too much about except my mom, but it was advertised). Maui Sailing Cruise is a good deal more expensive than other outrigger options, and with a large group, they made a lot of money off of our business. If they reimbursed us proportionally to the hour to half hour that was advertised but not included, it would be substantial. I approached the guides about this after our second group returned. The guide deflected saying "oh, it shouldn't say that" and "we've been needing to get a new IT guy" to update the website with accurate information. To his credit, he eventually apologized and said that the owner would email us to straighten things out. I thanked him saying that I didn't want to leave a bad review but.... Sadly, the owner's email never came. Calls from my sister went ignored, so we cut our losses. But I told them I'd do it, so here's my review to call them out for their sub par professionalism. It's disappointing that their team was so quick to reply pre-trip and wouldn't even give the courtesy of a reply afterward. ADDING: Looks like the website has been updated since our trip to reflect a (more) accurate description of the tour at 2.5 hours. Hope others have a better, more transparent experience. read more

I would like to highly recommend Maui Sailing Canoe for a REFRESHING adventure. My daughters and I wanted a trip out on the water and we had a blast on this sailing canoe. This is the "back to nature" trip on the water: no engines, no big crowds. What you experience is a HUGE sky, lapping water, quiet--even no conversation at all (unless you want to grill Dave and Lawaia about Hawaiian history!) Things I enjoyed the most (besides the above): being so close to the water and sunbathing out in the open air. Dave led my daughters snorkeling above a canyon where they saw beautiful fish and near the end we swam with a turtle. Finally I enjoyed our host, Dave. He is a welcoming host--gracious (the fresh pineapple he brought was delicious) and he's a lot of fun! The girls and I felt like ohana (family). As good as it gets! Every single time we've experienced Maui Sailing Canoe, it's been nothing short of fun, and entertaining, and adventure and relaxation... It's an entirely hand built traditional boat. Muscle power and the love of the sea, are what make the canoe as beautiful as she is. We've experienced sails with her and her crew, 4 times as of early 2015... CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE! I highly recommend taking the time to experience this... you'll get a bit wet so don't bring too much extra stuff. Enjoy the ride! Snorkel! See the sights! Booked a tour with Donnie in June for our extended family. We found him through Yelp and thought we'd check it out. In a word, amazing! The best thing we did during the entire two weeks! Quite possibly the best thing I've ever done while on Maui and we've been going for years! Donnie and Keoni were wonderful. The canoe was so peaceful. It's a hand made traditional style Hawaiian outrigger canoe and you feel so connected to the islands while you sail hearing the wind in the sail and the waves against the hull. You feel renewed. Snacks, doesn't begin to describe the huge yogurt and fruit parfaits and Hawaiian juices that we were served along with ice cold water. Donnie doesn't just take you around on the canoe. He tells you about the history of the Hawaiian islands and how important canoeing is to the Hawaiian people and their lifestyle. The snorkeling was wonderful. It's so peaceful when there's just a few people. We had our own gear (we're scuba divers), but Donnie's gear is top of the line if you need some, not like the usual bottom of the barrel stuff you get on a snorkel cruise. The canoe can only hold 6 not including crew, so it's more like hanging out with a buddy who owns a canoe, than a tour. We saw a cattle boat of snorkelers come up next to us, so Donnie just up and moved us to a quieter place. I could see all of the wistful faces on that huge boat as they looked at us so free and zen like. I can't wait to go back and sail with them again. read more

My wife and I made two tours in this great canoe. Danie and Nate were super friendly and let me also join them paddling in this special canoe. We saw many whales while we were quietly gliding over the water. My wife and I made another tour the next day as it was for us the best way to see whales and the gorgeous bay compared to all the overcrowded tour boats. We came here in December and were lucky to see around 7 whales up close. I do not want to imagine how it would be when there is more whales around in January or February. 45 minutes before our confirmed outrigger excursion time - as we were on our way to the beach venue - I received a call. The excursion had been cancelled due to weather (winds). We were leaving Maui that night so no chance to reschedule. I confirmed during the call that our money would be refunded. The outfitter assured me it would. Amazing day with Captain Sage! We got SO LUCKY and it ended up being just my wife and I sailing with Sage and his kick-ass son, Cru! So much fun sailing on the outrigger and a super unique way to get out on the water. The snorkeling was great! Sage found an small octopus (aka tako) and WE GOT TO HOLD IT! So. Amazing. Intimate family like snorkeling trip with knowledgeable guides who are great with children.

This is a most incredible and authentic way to explore the Maui Ocean. Last month, I went on a 2+-hour tour with Dave and Donnie, two of the most outstanding tour guides. There was a family of three and myself. As you sail or paddle (depending on the wind) out into the crystal blue waters they explain the history of the canoe you are riding (the only one on Maui), as well as, the names and information regarding the surrounding islands, hotels and oceanic life. You quickly become comfortable with them as they are truly engaging and love to share their passion for the water and the islands. I begin to feel like I was on a VIP tour. Dave and Donnie make you feel safe and before you realize it, you are sailing over beautiful sea life, turtles and reefs. Donnie anchors the boat for some personalized snorkeling. They set everyone up with snorkel gear and you are off with Dave to explore the reefs. Dave will show you the world below, he dives for sea urchins, octopus, sea stars and cucumbers to name a few. He is there in the water with you to answer all your questions and point out the local fish. I snorkeled solo for a few minutes and all I can say it's a sensational swim. At our leisure, we all got back on the boat for more exceptional exploration. In the distance, we saw humpback whales, a mother with her baby practicing their tail slapping on top of the water and full breach jumps. WOW! It's something you will never forget, they are such mystical and magical creatures. Since we were the last tour of the day, we were able to take our time getting back to land, and enjoyed more of the ocean...the sun, the wind through our hair and watching the sea fleeting beneath our dangling feet while lounging on the two most comfortable trampolines. As the wind pushed us across water, I couldn't help but think, how blessed I am for this tour and how wonderful it must be for Donnie and Dave to share this phenomenal experience several times a day with so many people. My wife and I had a great time on the outing! I was a little skeptical about the cost while we were booking things from the mainland but it was absolutely worth it! Not only was it far more convenient than any of our other activities, it had the most pleasant psychological impact. In addition to the comfort of a large trampoline like seating arrangement, it was very relaxing to be on a non motorized craft. The smell of petrol and noise of an engine would have been heinously disruptive in such a pristine and beautiful environment. Paying a little extra to have someone paddle and use the wind is a bargain for anyone who cares about the the experience. As if things were not amazing enough, our guide Sage, gave a wonderfully informative talk about the islands, canoe sailing, polynesian history and other pertinent subjects. He did so in a non automaton tour guide way. Instead it was a very low key, conversational and humorous tone that fit the experience perfectly. He really should record himself and post it to you tube. I bet it would generate a ton of views. The snorkel gear that was provided proved a higher quality that the gear we rented from the main store in Kihei. We were lucky enough to see turtles, a manta ray and plenty of fish. The day before, our outing was scrubbed because the conditions were not ideal. Im very glad that the outing was postponed in order to get the great conditions we were able to enjoy. Let that be a lesson to all you would be tourists out in yelp land. Don't schedule too many things so as to lose flexibility. Weather plays a huge role in the activities so keep a day free between obligations. Its nice to have nothing planned for at least half the time because just being in and out of the water is perfectly enjoyable. Amazing day aboard the Hina with my family ranging in age from 6 to 62. My husband and I have been on many snorkeling trips and this was the most unique. We helped launch the outrigger canoe into the ocean and my brother took a turn paddling. My mother almost didn't join us because she can't swim but Dave made her feel very comfortable and she ended up loving it. Dave and Lawaina were both very knowledgeable about the ocean and the history of the island. We saw beautiful fish and a sea turtle. It was relaxing and fun! read more

Best way to visit snorkeling spots. Our family of 5 took off from Polo Beach with Captain Donny and crew man Jacob. They made it fun, informative, relaxed and safe! The entire time I felt like our safety was their top concern without that ever impacting the fun. Unlike the catamaran trip we took (which was great, don't get me wrong!), this is customized to the conditions of the day. No turtles at Turtle Town on the catamaran with 80 other people? Too bad - the itinerary is set. On this canoe they can take you to wherever is the best that day! They totally got my teenage and preteen boys. Somehow managed to engage all 3, teaching them how to row, telling them about the sea life, letting the youngest just jump on and off and on and off again.
