    Snorkeling Molokini
    Kelly F.

My wife and I wanted to snorkel at Molokini on our vacation. But we weren't looking to go with any BIG corporate crews. We found Sail Maui and gave them a try. WOW!!! We are so glad we chose SM. It's a local family owned company with midsize cat boats. Captain Brandon and the crew were hospitable, knowledgeable, and attentive. The trip itself was amazing. We detoured on our way to Molokini to catch sight of some whales. And we weren't disappointed, we witnessed whales mating and a baby whale completely breach. Then when we arrive at the crater, Cap. Brandon chose the perfect spot. Fantastic clarity and at least 20 different types of colorful fish. On our way back (after a delicious sandwich lunch) we dropped the sails and made our way to turtle town. All this for a price less than "The Big Guys."

This has been the highlight to our Maui trip so far. -We had a lot of great whale sightings. -We had a beautiful view of the sunset. -The crew was great -- very friendly and accommodating with making sure we had drinks and food (there was an open bar). -The trip started and ended on time. 100% would recommend. Thank you!

My husband and I came to Hawaii to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. This sail, snorkel excursion was hands down the best thing we did all trip! From the views, snorkeling, and crew, it was all amazing. Greg, Cass & Dan were so friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. I wish I had booked the full day option so we could see the other side of Molokini Crater and snorkel even longer. If we ever make it back to Maui, this will be the first excursion booked!

My husband and I did both the sunset cruise and the Molokini snorkel adventure. We thoroughly enjoyed both! The crew on both days was super kind, knowledgeable, and attentive. The drinks on the sunset cruise were well made and the food was great! They served kebabs, caprese skewers, a veggie platter, egg rolls, and maybe some other things that I have forgotten since. As for the snorkel excursion, that was my favorite. We got lucky and had a group of only 10 people when normally it's about 50. Again, an amazing and helpful crew. It was my first time snorkeling and the captain helped me out a lot and gave me tips. More great food for breakfast and lunch! I can't recommend them enough. It'll be a good time no matter what sail you sign up for.

Shout out to Captain Greg for a fabulous sunset cruise! My family and I had an absolute blast that evening (Sunday), we genuinely appreciate your entire crew's enthusiasm and Hawaiian hospitality during our tour! Highly recommend.

    A Happy Crew

We joined Sail Maui once again on their new catamaran, Akialoa. Captain Brandon, crew Lily and Nianoa. The captain's smile in the attached photo says it all, a fun and great trip. Not sure who had more fun, the captain or his passengers. We were mugged by seven whales in a competition pod that couldn't leave our boat alone. In fact, we had to stay past our return time because the whales wouldn't leave! We have many great whale watches in our experiences, this tops them all. Great crew, sail, and company.

We had the best time with Dakota and crew they were so professional and kind it felt like family and home away from home!

Roomy boat with plenty of space for a large party :)

Can't beat a sunset sail with open bar and snacks! We traveled at end of February so it was whale watching season. We saw a pod of dolphins and a whale on our sunset sail and a double rainbow Such amazing service the sailing team was super friendly always asking if we wanted another drink. With Covid they packed the sliders and cookie into a little container so it was super easy to grab and they even had banana bread! Even though the sunset was a little overcast it was a great experience. Highly recommend not too expensive considering all that you get 85.00 per person. The Alalani is their newer boat and I think with 50% capacity they were taking 40 passengers. Free parking in a public lot in front street in Laihana. So this is a great pick if you are staying at the west end but even from the east side it's not too far of a drive I think 30-40 min. Please wear a mask on front street we did see some people get fined

If you're considering a snorkeling excursion I recommend Sail Maui without a doubt. These guys take care of you from start until you debark. We got there early to board and headed for Molikini in perfect weather. The crew served a great continental breakfast with yummy fresh fruit, yogurt, coffee, etc.... The catamaran is a pretty awesome boat and the crew was amazing. Because it was the tail end of whale watching season, we had the luxury of seeing these beautiful creatures several times throughout the sail. The Captain made sure he would put us in the best position to catch glimpses of these awesome creatures. The snorkeling itself was awesome and an amazing experience. I want to give a shout out to Spencer for always making sure we had drinks in hand on the ride back. The lunch was great too. These guys rock! Tip them well when you go, they deserve it!!

The staff was all fantastic--Kayden, Sienna, Carly and Jim. The weather was great and we got to circle around Molokini. The clarity as Molokini is every bit as amazing as they say. The downsize is you are corralled into a virtual pen so you can't really drift away from the crowd to explore. You'll need to watch for human feet while you are watching the sea-life. Turtle Town was nice, but the visibility was not as good. We saw more turtles off Ka'anapali Beach and one of the wayside beaches. Still, the other part of the experience was the snorkeling and... the drinks! And the food! The watermelon mojito was our favorite, though all the drinks were great and the food likewise was excellent. I would highly recommend this experience. While it wasn't our favorite snorkeling experience, the overall experience was one of the highlights of our trip!

Highly suggest taking a fun trip on the Leilani. Smaller boat with less passengers then some of the others. Great boat, great crew! Aloha.

My husband and I joined the Leilani for a snorkel trip and had a mixed reaction to it…read more The good: the price was a great value, the crew was friendly and caring, the smaller sized group was better (in our opinion) than some of the larger vessels, there were no kids or heavy drinkers (big plus for us but don't know if that's always the case), and we did in fact see some beautiful turtles, coral reefs, and fish. Food, beverages, and sunscreen provided were very nice, as well! The bad: if you are a man with any facial hair the snorkel mask will leak and be a nuisance during your time in the water (they have no alternatives and this is an ongoing problem for them), we couldn't make it to Molokini because of high winds (not their fault) and the second of the two places they took us to as an alternative was very lacking in sea life (that was a disappointment but again, not entirely their fault), they charge $10 bucks per wetsuit top which drained our cash for tip, and the smaller size vessel was more susceptible to rocking and made several people on board very ill. This rating is mostly based on an overall feeling we had from the trip and not necessarily the fault of the crew, but management needs to get on board with other options for men with facial hair (over 50% of the guys on board) for sure and also give a heads up about cash payments for the wetsuit tops so the crew doesn't lose tip money.

I've never been much of a…read moresnorkeler, as I have what is likely the worst case of thalassophobia that any human being has ever contracted. The ocean scares me more than I can put into words. However, if my Mom is going to go snorkeling, what would I look like backing out? We got our snorkel gear on, and I made my Dad jump in first to make sure there were no apex predators waiting to swoop the first thing that came off the boat. Once I saw him chilling there for about 30 seconds, I jumped in hella nonchalant. But when my 5'10.5 176 lb orangutan-like frame submerged in the water, I went straight into fight or flight. When you looked at the ocean floor below, you could see a submerged cliff that dropped straight down. All you could see was the vicious, unknown, and unforgiving deep blue. The most unsettling feeling I have ever had. What is down there? What is coming for me? I'm just floating here like a sitting duck? HELL NAH! I closed my eyes and made a beeline STRAIGHT for the shore about 40 yards away, where there were 30+ other tourists snorkeling peacefully. Once I made sure there were at least 5 other people a shark would take out first, my heart rate started to stabilize. I began to appreciate the bustling life in this crescent shaped volcanic crater that is a protected marine life conservation district. I saw 100s of fish that I didn't know existed. When the rest of my family and local Hawaiian tour guide, Bailey, caught up with us, I began PEPPERING him with questions. 'What fish is that? How about that one? Why is it named trigger fish? What's the coolest thing you've ever seen here? Does it get old doing the same tour over and over again?" Bro HAD to be so annoyed with me, but I just couldn't help it. He was so passionate, engaging, and knowledgeable. Shoutout to Bailey. My favorite fish I saw was this vibrant, multicolored fish that genuinely looked fake. It looked just like that Rainbow Fish from that book. I followed it around for 10 minutes, and asked Bailey what type of fish it was. "That's a Parrot Fish! It actually is one of the few fish that can change its gender as a part of its natural life cycle. They also eat algae off of rocks that smother and kill coral reefs, and then they poop fine sand which is a major reason for many tropical beaches." I asked if Parrot Fish tasted good and he said "OH YEAH... well they are a bit of an acquired taste, but I love them." Bro is an encyclopedia. I arrived at Molokini Island scared to death of the deep blue, and also left the same way, but with a good amount of knowledge on Parrot Fish. This is what life is all about...
