This was an experience. No, not because we were on Haleakala for a bike tour but the lack of organization and utterly horrible condition of the equipment. When we arrived at the office there was nobody to greet us or the other patrons. The office is actually behind another building. We met our contact, Lou, who took us up in the beat up, loud van that had a hole in the exhaust and trash from previous guests. Once at the start location, Lou unloaded a bunch of beat up, squeaky, bicycles with torn seats, bald tires and No Gears! He told everyone to pick whichever bike they wanted and then handed out helmets that were beat up, scraped up and smelled like gym socks. As our self guided bike tour started we figured out that some of the tires wobbled and that the brakes were so worn out I had to drag my feet to slow down and stop. Then, it happened, my rear tire went flat. Total baloney skin on an aluminum rim. I called Lou, who came to my location and the first bike he gave me to replace my original bike also went flat right in front of us. Hoping that third times the charm, that bike seemed to be the one but then a couple of miles later, the chain came off. Luckily, I was able to fix that myself with having to call Lou again. Two guys from another bicycle company even offered to keep an eye out for us if we needed further help getting down the trail. Finally, we all made it back to the office safely and in one piece. Through all that, we still had fun and laughed our asses off at the whole experience. The views from Haleakala were amazing. And believe it or not, Lou was the bright spot of this operation. He was laid back, apologized for everything and even offered a contact for the owner to try and get a refund. I didn't do that as we still had fun and now have a great story. Lou, thanks for the help with my bike and your hospitality. All that being said, I can't in good conscience recommend this company. The equipment is absolutely terrible and unsafe. If you want to bike Haleakala, pony up the money and go with another tour company. read more

I will recommend Maui Mountain Cruisers to you if you want to try bike down the hill while you are in Maui, I know there are so many companies doing the same thing and Maui Mountain Cruisers are not the cheapest one, but the whole experience is well worth it. Our driver and bike leader were all very friendly and very patient to us. They also were very careful on the safety and took really good care of us! I saw some reviews complained that have to pay extra 20% tips to them, but it's an almost 9 hours long event (they picked you up from hotel at 3AM, dropped you back at hotel at noon) , they were friendly yet professional during the whole time, I really think they deserve the gratuity. Some reminds if you are going to take the sunrise cruise: 1. Wear warm, really warm, the top of mountain is really cold and windy. They will give you windproof jacket and pants but it won't be enough, you need to wear your own warm jacket and long pants. 2. While the Maui Mountain Cruisers drive you back to their office to sign the statement, they have some free snacks and coffee on the table, remember to grab some extra snacks and bars with you, you will need them later. 3. While they have a short stop in the lavender farm, try the farm's breakfast taco. I really think it is d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s! read more

MMC is an illegally operating, unlicensed, uninsured tour company! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! After my experience with them, I tried searching for their license info and came up empty on the governing agency's (DDCA) website. Because they're illegal. This tour was trash and the company is trash. Tours were all booked at my preferred tour company (Bike It Maui) so I jumped at the available tours offered here. Big mistake. If I had done basic research beforehand, I would have seen the reviews consistently cite unsafe equipment and unprofessional business practices. Because that's exactly what I experienced. Not all bike tour places are the same and with Bike Maui, the equipment they provided was top notch. This place gave old, decrepit bikes where the brakes barely even worked. The helmets were old and disgusting. The tour guide, Jon, asked a particularly tall member of my family how much he weighed and after my family member answered, Jon provided him with a bike and said "this bike has a weight capacity of 400lbs." The bike that Jon gave my family member BROKE INTO THREE PIECES on a flat road. My family member fell, sustained injuries to his leg and had to discontinue the tour. Afterwards, Jon insisted that my family member, who is a minor, was "way overweight" and broke the bike. Jon insisted that there was nothing wrong with the bike, which was totally unacceptable. Jon agreed to refund the one tour but when I followed up, continued to fat shame my minor family member, claim that there was nothing wrong with a bike that breaks into 3 pieces when you're riding it in a manner as it was designed and intended for, and downplayed the huge road rash that resulted. "he was fine..." Nevermind the fact that this bike was one that John gave himself to his customer after checking the weight, so I'm not sure how Jon does the math on that. In short, the equipment is unsafe. It is not normal for a bicycle to break into pieces, let alone have it be the bicycle that a professional gives you to use. The tour operator will lie and cheat their customers. Despite agreeing to issue a refund, they haven't yet and Jon tells me "the owners tell me they already did it." What a load of crap. Jon's name is all over their website so I don't think he's fooling anyone when he shirks responsibility by pretending someone else is in charge. BTW it's shady af to go by multiple names. Jon Thuro=Jack Dawson. $0.00 is too much to spend with this company. Keep yourself and your loved ones safe by passing Maui Mountain Cruisers up. The advertisement is misleading. The "26 mile sunrise bike ride from summit to sea" was more like a two-thirds the way to summit and back to the bike shop which my watch calculated to be just over 22 miles. The coffee and snacks were an after thought and not mentioned until my husband asked about coffee. Then, when we get to our "summit" location we were on the west side of the mountain and not east for the sunrise! You could tell the whole group was disappointed and felt mislead. The equipment is in very bad shape. We had cruiser type bikes with noticeable rust. I felt like a clown trying to use the peddles at all and my 6' 4" husband struggled with the height. We both love biking and were overall disappointed with this experience. The views were nice and the aromas as we biked made the trip enjoyable despite the rest of the shortcomings. Found this amazing excursion on viator website, but called the company direct to book it. They honored the online price which was very cool of them. We got a text message confirming the tour and telling us the address and how to find the place. Finding the place was easy since they told us it was behind the yoga studio which was important information due to no signage. We were greeted and told to read and sign waivers as we waited for the rest of our party. Our group was small which made the tour seem more intimate. We were given jackets to keep us warm at the top and gloves for our hands. We boarded the van and headed up the mountain with our driver and and our guide. Our guide was talkative and very knowledgeable about the area throughout the tour. He made sure we understood the safety guidelines and signals so we would have a fun, yet safe ride down the mountain. We were the first guided tour up the mountain for sunrise at 6,500 feet. We saw the horizon change beautiful colors. After the sun was up, we set off down the mountain. The company provided us with a bike and helmet. My husband was confident about the ride, but I was nervous about going down a steep mountain at fast speeds. I can't begin to tell you how much I was worried about nothing. The road isn't as steep as I thought. The bike had great brakes for slowing down if I felt I was going to fast. I was comfortable on the wide bike seat and had a wonderful ride down the mountain. The guides didn't rush us. The speed was such that we always felt like we were in control. We took two breaks: one short and one long. Our long break was about 40 minutes in a town after about 20 miles down the mountain. We went to this amazing bakery and got donuts and a cute coffee shop for you guessed it, coffee! I was so glad we did. We had a great last 6 miles back. This tour was perfect for our budget. Yes, the bike isn't shiny and new and the helmets have been used but I didn't feel like the equipment couldn't do the job. Ultimately, I urge you to try this tour because you'll be as happy as I for saying you not only went down the 3rd highest mountain in the world on a bike but also an active volcano!! read more

I am giving 3 stars due the the quality of the bikes. The bikes are very sketchy, you are riding doe. 10,000 ft mountain you want to feel comfortable not praying your bike stays together. There are other companies with really nice bikes and helmets. Bill and Dean were great tour guide. They made you laugh and they had fun with showing customers their beautiful island. I would give Bill and Dean 5 stars. I highly recommend wearing pants and bring a blanket or a towel from the hotel, it gets freezing up there. They only give you a jacket, which needs to be washed or thrown away because they smell. The view is worth it, but I think they get there a little too early. We waited an hr and a half for the sunrise, there is plenty of room for a great view, no need to show up there first. read more

Bad on the uphill, good on the downhill. Unfortunately, I won't go with them again. I've done the bike down the volcano 5 times with various companies. Maui Mountain Cruisers was the first company I went with years ago and again on this trip. Here's the good: these guys did a nice job of taking us down the hill on bikes. We all had fun and it was safe. Honestly, not any different from other tour companies I've gone with, other than we were sent our own way to get breakfast that we paid for on our own rather than going as aground. We had a good group and went fast, which was nice. Here's the bad: breaking traffic laws on the way up and feeling really uneasy in the back of the van. I could tell others were feeling the same as you could see them chatting. I will not name the crew here, but there were 3 specific things that I felt were unnecessary and unsafe: 1. Driving 69.9 in a 45 mph zone. I know this because my son commented on how fast these guys were going and has a photo of the speed using a speed app. 2. Crossing a double yellow line to pass 4 cars that were driving slower than we were 3. Driving on the bumper of the car in front of us going up the mountain, flashing lights, tailgating badly when the car in front had nowhere to go and was already going 5 mph over the speed limit on the curvy road. I signed a waiver thinking it was for the ride down and realized on that drive that I'd signed my rights away for the drive up to the top as well. With so many other good choices, I'll go elsewhere next time. I didn't like feeling stressed. The WORST tour experience ever. Horrible. Absolutely horrible. Maui has too much to offer to waste time with this company. Supposed to start at 6:45 am. Got a text the day before pushing back to 7:30. Then got a call pushing back to 8:00. John shows up at 8:30. Website doesn't have accurate information about the tour. Apparently, there was change to the tour but didn't update the web content. The worst was the service - both the lady and John were rude. Horrible customer service. This tour is a total ripoff! I regret not reading these reviews before letting our concierge booking this trip. I don't even know where to start! From the very beginning the driver was very unpleasant. I know 3am is early start for everyone, but how hard it is to introduce yourself to the customers and shake someones hand when you first meet them? After picking up everyone the driver took us to their place of business, I don't even know how to call that place. It was a shed! They stated morning snack will be provided, but all we got was a cheap granola bar (only two were left by the time we got there) and the worst kind of Keurig coffee. No water whatsoever. After that they took us on the top of the volcano (driving like maniacs), without any additional information provided, and that was a good opportunity to educate us on the volcano and the national park. They gave us stinky jackets and no water provided yet. Watching the sunrise was a nice experience. A native Hawaiian was singing some kind of their traditional song, but still don't know what it was because no one said a word about it, and they had a great opportunity to do so driving down the volcano to the place where our bikes were. When they started taking the bikes out I thought they were joking and that there was some kind of hidden camera filming us. Those things were falling apart, and were so unsafe and uncomfortable! And the helmets and gloves were disgustingly dirty. We were told we are going to be riding 26 miles averaging 20mph. We rode for 17 miles averaging 16mph according to my Garmin watch. I can understand that because the rain started drizzling, and our tour guide does not like to get wet. It's 9 am and no water provided yet. They took us to Makawoo, which is a cute cowboy city where we had a breakfast that we had to pay for. Overall, this is the only activity on Maui we regret doing, and we feel like we were scammed. This company pretty much provided (unsafe) transportation without providing any additional value. We did not learn anything new nor got a decent bike ride. The trip was fantastic from start to finish. Jack picked us up from Kaanapali and shared great history about the island. We stopped at their base camp, then got to the volcano in time to see the sunrise, then immediately started on our way down. Finished the morning with a delicious breakfast at Island Fresh Cafe. Jack made the trip very fun, safe and informative. I had done a similar ride about 12 years ago - which did start at the very top, so I was a little concerned about how different this would be since there are now so many limitations on access to the top of the volcano. This slightly adjusted ride is even better - not as early of a pick up, not as cold (since you are at a little lower altitude) and you don't have to wait around for multiple vans (that got there before you) to take off. read more

NOT A SUNRISE TOUR!!! Wish I could give negative stars. They drop you off about halfway to the top on the west side of the mountain so you will see no part of the sunrise. The rickety bikes were NOT SAFE. Squeaky warped wheels and iffy brakes. My back end got loose a couple times going not very fast. I would look for a different place if I was you. Groupon failed our group. Warning they do not maintain their bikes, rusted components , squealing brakes, helmets with broken straps , jackets with worn out Velcro, etc. Federal law does not allow them to go to the very top of Haleakalā so you will NOT see the sunrise. No bathrooms either! Our group are all experienced riders so we made do with what we were provided but it was sketchy. So glad we made it to the bottom safely. This was one of the coolest things I did during my trip to Maui. It was both horrifying and exhilarating. I loved every minute of it. We were picked up at our hotel at 2:30am and bussed to the hippie town of Paia, where we joined up with our other guide. From there, we drove to Haleakala National Park and drove to the highest point to watch the sunrise. The sunrise was amazing, but was not the most memorable I've ever seen. There were many people at the summit waiting for the sun to rise. It was very windy and cold and although we were given wind suits, we felt like we were going to freeze solid. We stood there for about 30 minutes and when the sun rose, we boarded our bus and drove down from about 10,000ft to 7,500ft. This is where the fun really began. The rest of the excursion was a 28 mile bike ride back to the town to Paia. It was pretty indescribable- the scenery, the fresh air, the smell of the lavender farm we drove through- all so amazing. I was very scared when the ride initially started but as we descended my fear subsided. The roads are very windy and we were expected to stay with the group and maintain a certain speed. I will say, I was the only one on my tour that was scared- so take that for what it's worth. I'm kind of a wimp. Our guide, Lucas was awesome. He made sure we were all safe and explained the hand signals we should look for. We also had another guide that followed us in a van to head up the rear. He and Lucas communicated with head sets during the whole trip. We stopped for a couple of photo ops along the way, too, and the guides were gracious enough to snap pics of all the riders. This company takes all precautions to make sure guests are safe. We wore huge helmets the entire time and wind gear when we were at high altitude. To me, this experience was risky- but then again, so is anything adventurous. This was definitely worth the risk. At the end of the trip, our whole group shared a breakfast at Charlie's in Paia. It was great to spend time getting to know our guide and hear some of his Maui stories. I would definitely recommend this excursion and this company. read more

I purchased two vouches. Each voucher $150. The $150 included guides to ride down hill with us. They dropped us off at 6500'. We did not see the sunrise as advertised. No guides rode down with us. I found out other riders payed $80 per voucher which did not include a guide. I confronted Maui Mountain Cruisers about the cost difference. They said they don't know what happened. They would not pay me back the extra money I payed.( I figured they put my wife and I with the wrong group) I explained this to Maui Mountain Cruisers. Now they are giving me the run around. Very disappointed in this company, in business, you take the good with the bad. In this case, it was good for the customer, inconvenient for Maui Mountain Cruisers. I did all of the research, landed on this company, checked the weather report, blocked out my valuable vacation time to do a 7AM ride with them, only to receive a voice mail the night before saying the ride was canceled... They actually admitted that they canceled because it was going to be just myself and wife on the ride, no one else signed up, so they decided to cancel. If you do the math, this ride is not cheep, $130 per person, so roughly $260 for the both of us, for 4 hours of entertainment. If I am estimating correctly, they probably pay the driver(s) about $15 an hour, it might cost $50 in fuel and some other minimal costs, which may have left them making SOME money, but not as much as they would like. Even if they lost a few dollars on the excursion, they should still be servicing the paying customer who planned ahead to use their company. Very disappointed and highly suggest you look at other companies, so you do not get canceled on! read more

Terrible drivers working for them, rude and arrogant. A whole bunch of people get crammed into the van with no room to breathe. It was 2am when we got picked up and after we got in the van , the driver started blasting a loud radio music. We asked him to please turn it down, since it was so early and we all were hoping to nap on the way there, but he basically ignored us and said that "it wasn't an early morning for him". ON the way there he dangerously drove 60 in a 30 zone throughout. To add to that, on the way from the volcano he got into the road rage and pulled over into incoming lane and blocked the traffic to go and argue/scream at the car behind us who to his taste was too impatient and was trying to pass. The bikes themselves are old and rusty and barely work. For the price they are charging they really should provide you with a better equipment. Oh and to top it off, these people are thiefs. We had called them to reserve our spot and gave our credit card. (i believe they have 48 cancellation policy). We found a cheaper price with this company through a difference agency that sells tours and decided to book with the instead since the price was significantly lower for the SAME exact thing. WE called and cancelled the tour way ahead of time (like 4 days ahead) and the receptionist said that it was not a problem and that we wont get charged. Sure enough they still charged us $310 . When we called to have these charges reversed, they had said that they needed our credit card info, which we gave them. Its been weeks, still no refund. I contacted them multiple times via email and did not get any reply back. Had to dispute the charge with my credit card. Terrible!!!! read more

Pro: We really liked this excursion. The guides Ronald and Ben were very lively and fun to tour with. They provided us with jackets, windbreaker jacket and pants and gloves which were greatly appreciated because it was 40 degrees at the top of the mountain for the sunrise mountain bike ride. We were taken up early to get a good spot on the mountain for the sunrise but it added to our freezing so make sure you layer. Con: The driver was 30 minutes late picking us up so we were sitting outside at 1:30am waiting for his arrival. We had to go in single file down the mountain and believe it or not some people cannot ride bikes so you don't get to go as fast as you like. I think I had really high expectations of this trip, and it turned out to be okay. I booked this company because they charged the most(I paid $155 per person for three pp) and I thought we will get the best--it turned out to be not true. I don't think it is worth the money. The best part about the trip is the beautiful stars(more than one can imagine) in the sky and the sunrise. The rest is just cruising down the road. Our guides Billy and Huyou were super on time and super nice. On top of the mountain, I heard many other groups had guides telling stories about the volcano and stars. This part I am ok--I can read online. My problem is the "27 miles ride"--it was NOT 27 miles ride. Our bike ride was cut short at the bottom--we were put in the van and rode along, then we were dropped off at a tiny place with a couple of shops for one hour. We had nothing to do for one whole hour. I went to two coffee places, and they both don't even have seats to sit down. There was a garden Cafe, but it was not open until 11 AM.( we were dropped off at 9:30 AM, and supposed to be back at the Van at 10:30 AM). My parents and I walked around in distress, found a place on the road side, sat on a worn bench, and fed the chickens... At 10:30 AM, we were back to the Van, drove a little, out of the Van again for the rest of bike ride. If I had paid a smaller price than usual, I would be ok too. I was told this company do longer rides, excellent rides, and that is why I booked it and paid top price. But it turn out to be the one with shorter ride?? read more

In Maui on a company sponsored event. My wife signed us up for the Sunrise Tour. Had to be up at 1 am to meet our guide (Owen) at 2 am. The event lasted 9 hours - way too long. Owen and Jay did a great job. I would NOT do this event with a group again. Below are my comments for your consideration: * Sunrise Event: - Make sure youv take cold weather gear (skiing) to include gloves and maybe a blanket. - We got to the crater 2 1/2 hours before sunrise - great seats along the quarrel, then waited. - The sunrise was AWESOME - but the event would have been better if we would have been told to dress properly. We were told that they provided fleece - they did not. I ran back to the room and grabbed every piece of cold weather gear I we packed. - Some tour services provided their guests with a blanket to wrap up in - great idea. - Jay issues us fleece gloves for the bike ride. WISH we would have had them when we stood out in the 35 deg weather (not calculating wind chill). * Bike ride - 25+ miles downhill: - Thank you for our windsuit. - Owen and Jay did a superb job with SAFETY. - WEATHER was awesome. - Ride experience was poor. It all depends were yiu end up in the chain of people. - You ride single-file down the hill. - I was placed last in the order of march, therefore the"tail of the roller coaster" - with lots of stops and starts. - My wife andb the woman who were at the front had a good time. read more

As one of our Maui Adventures, my BF and I decided to dosomething we wouldn't be able to do or more like wouldn't want to do here in the Bay Area. We decided to take a Sunrise tour of Halekala's (probably Maui's most famous dormant volcano) and bike downhill for 30+miles. This company is very conscious of time and was prompt. We were picked up right as we walked into the lobby at about 1:57am (we were scheduled for 2:00am pickup). Our van continued to pick up passengers from other hotels. We then stopped at their headquarters for complimentary muffins and coffee. Next we suited up for the cold temperatures at summit. This company lended sweaters, windbreaker fits, and gloves to protect us from the cold.....duhh. who packs winter clothes for a Maui trip.... We were the first guided tour to get up to the viewing areas overlooking the Volcano crater and so we got a prime picture spot. The sunrise was so beautiful!!! About a couple miles down from the top we began out bike ride. The van drops off a trailer loaded with bikes. You ride down the mountain in a straight line(may not seem fun), but I some found out why when I had to stay in a 1' wide bike lane down the 2 way roadway....SAFETY! This tour guides were great and very personable. Mike, our bicycle guide, lead us down the mountain and Chuck, our truck driver, commuicated together over radios the whole time to ensure our safety. While we were having fun, they were working....Bikiing down a hill, and down curve after curve was something definitely out of my comfort zone, but it was also way cool not to have to pedal uphill for the most part. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND A FULLY GUIDED BIKE TOUR ESPECIALLY IN CASE OF EMERGENCY.... Oh Lucky me... I ended up getting a flat tire about 3/5 of the way down to hill. Once I stopped off the side in the bike lane, the driver of the van quickly jumped out of the car to see what was wrong. Concerned for my safety he grabbed the bike and directed me to hop in the van since it was very dangerous because I stopped at a blinded corner. He flagged the other bikers to keep going and not stop since it was not safe. I was so glad the company acted fast and was glad there was a plan in place in the case that such an emergency arose. The van soon caught up with the others and they had a spare bike for me to use for the rest of the ride down. Having a guided tour also allows you to toss all personal items in a van and take off layers of clothing during pits stops down the hill. This was so helpful since was probably a 30 degree difference from top to bottom of the volcano. Chuck, the van driver, also served as a tour guide as he drove us back to the hotel. It was definitely worth the money not worrying about driving the 1.5 drive each way, not having to do the research, and just following their lead. This is definitely one of the most memorable things we did in Maui. There are several other companies out that also do this adventure that maybe more expensive or cheaper (we paid $125 per person and booked through an Expedia representative), so it may be worth researching because some other companies deals come with an included breakfast. At times I did feel a bit rushed...but I assure you these guys are greatan personable. We left at about 2:00am and we're back by 9:30am. We finally got to bed at 10:00am....this did throw off our time that day, but I was so glad we did it. =) read more

Both guides are in constant radio contact with each other. Small van packed completely full. Horrible like a pack of sardines. When we arrived to the top I noticed many other companies that had much better transportation accommodations. The driver was crazy driving on the way up. I would be dead if the old an tire blew. And the smell of gas the entire way up was disgusting. The continental breakfast was coffee and rice crispie treats. Just seems like this company really cuts corners to maximise profits. The sky was amazing on arrival. More stars then you could imagine. It is true about the cold. I usually run hot but have a shirt, and two sweaters on and am still cold. It was a 2am pickup so was super tired. The bike ride down was magical. They do not go slow. I did the sunrise bike tour and it was excellent. The staff was polite, attentive and knowledgable. I stayed in Lahaina and MMC staff picked me up from my hotel. They provided coffee and snacks. Sunrise was perfect. We were very lucky. I've done a similar tour and we were not able to see the sunrise (white out). I agree with other reviews...dress in warm layers and bring gloves. The Lavender Farm was closed due to power outage but we stopped for a bite at a Rodeo General Store in Makawao. Great spot with a deli for both carnivores and vegans; so we didn't mind the change in venue. All in all I had a great time. Highly recommend the tour. Not for the anxious person and we rode mostly downhill on a paved road so good for a novice. Not good for an experienced rider. You'll be bored. read more

My family and I are on our first visit to Maui, for my husband's 50th birthday. The downhill bike ride on Haleakala was the best activity we have done since we arrived 4 days ago. The spectacular views at the summit and throughout the ride were breathtaking. Riding downhill was absolutely stimulating. Our trip was booked by our concierge for August 14th. We went to bed early and had a few hours of sleep and were ready as instructed in the lobby at 2:00 a.m. They did not show up. I called the number on the ticket and got a recording. After waiting for 40 minutes, we went back to our hotel room and fell asleep finally after 4:00 a.m. At 7:30 a.m. my cell rang and it was Cheryl apologizing and saying she gave the wrong hotel information and the wrong cell phone number to the driver. She asked that we re-book and my husband said we'll think about it. We went down later in the afternoon and spoke to the concierge about what happened. She said Cheryl had called her near tears to say how terrible she felt, and if we would re-book, we'd receive the VIP treatment and get hats and t-shirts. While we didn't really care so much about objects, we decided to re-book since my husband had his heart set on the trip. The next morning, August 15th at 2:00 A.M. they did show up on time, but without a step stool to climb into a very high van.We kept waiting for the VIP treatment to begin. Now I had a cast on my arm (I was only going to ride down the mountain in the van,) and I have pretty arthritic knees. I expressed dismay at how I was going to climb up into the van as there was no hand grip either. Receiving no response, I tried to wrap my right arm around the back of the front seat (I'm left-handed and the cast was on that hand.) I tried to pull myself up, but my knees couldn't do it and I slammed my left shin very hard into the bottom of the van. It is now September 13th, and I still have a huge lump in my still-purple shin. A nice fellow-passenger suggested me sitting in the front seat, and I asked the driver if I could and he said yes (why didn't he suggest that?) It had a hand grip and I could pull myself up. So that's how I rode to base camp. Once at base camp having our granola bars and coffee, the driver got the "step-stool" out and it was a concrete cinder block with holes in it. Still no VIP treatment. The ride up the mountain was fine, and the sunrise spectacular. Back in the van to the bikes. My husband rode in last position, and it was almost like I was with him in the van right behind him. The driver and the leader were in constant contact and very concerned about the safety of the riders. Then I saw my husband having trouble with his bike and a cord flapping. The driver communicated to the leader that my husband seemed to have a brake cord that was giving him trouble. I was pretty frightened. They stopped the trip and the leader ended up trading bikes with my husband, but I couldn't stop thinking about a broken brake on that downhill ride. A lovely stop in a small town and had pastries from the famous Komoda Bakery. Then the rest of the ride down and finally back to our hotel. No shirts. No caps. No VIP treatment. Our concierge was gone for a day or two, but when she returned, we told her what happened. She apparently called the company to find out what happened. The day we were leaving Maui, we received a phone call from Cheryl saying we could come by base camp or they would mail us T-shirts if we wanted them to. Now why would we want them? So, I guess that was the "VIP treatment" provided by the company. read more

Overall this was a good experience. The highlight was our tour guide Pete, who was very knowledgable, friendly, and did his best to make me feel comfortable since this was a very nerve wracking experience for me. I felt safe when riding with him so that was a definite positive. I also enjoyed stopping at a local lavender farm for breakfast (not included but they have a beautiful garden). The negatives- we were picked up by a man named D and interactions with him left something to be desired for sure. He wasn't very friendly, actually rather rude at times. For example, one lady on our tour wasn't feeling well and asked if he could turn on the air conditioning. He told her no, that she just needed to sit in the front. Also, I felt very unsafe with him driving up to Haleakala. In my opinion, he was driving way too fast ( at least 10-15) above the speed limit which made many of us on board nervous. This might be the way the locals drive but it was definitely unnerving to many of us. Especially since we were very high up on a curvy road. But that said, he did get us there all in one piece. also, I wish we would have stopped at more places/ overlooks for picture taking. read more

We scheduled to be picked up and they claimed it would be an additional $100 for the two of us even though their confirmation email said we would be picked up. This happened to another customer. MMC blamed the booking agents, although I booked directly with them. 2. There was no snack or hot beverage provided. 3. Transportation to the biking location was sketchy! The van had low tire pressure and needed an oil change. The driver rode the cars in front of him and passed two vehicles up hill on a windy road, crossing the double yellow. This was even after being told that some of the passengers were prone to carsickness. One passenger got so sick that she could not do the bike ride. 4. The content from the guided tour was only about the Baldwin family coming to Maui to save the natives from the diseases contracted from the white people and that the descendants of the original Baldwin are all broke now. 5. The bikes and helmets were in extremely poor shape. There were not enough helmets to fit properly. Brakes were squishy. One of the bikes we used had a bulging tire and wobbled. 6. We only had a driver. Not two guides. The bike ride down was not guided. This was a self guided tour, even though we paid for the guided tour. When confronted about these discrepancies, the driver passed the buck to the outside organizations who book the tours, not taking accountability based on their website. read more

Good price. Comfortable Bikes . Nice crew. And they offer a few snacks and coffee which was nice. Few improvements would bring up rating. My 1st suggestion would be a Five minute warning prior to departure would be most appreciated. Make sure everyone has their gear and is ready. Not everyone receives the information early arrivals receive . We weren't late, just not early I was told to sign the waiver and not given any other information. I did not know I needed to get a jacket and pants from inside the building until everybody else was already in the van. Riders who are express self guided tour should be allowed to sit closer to the guide in the front of the van so they can hear the instructions. I repeatedly indicated I could not hear what guide Bill was saying. Partially because the last row of participants were talking. And partially because Bill was not speaking loud enough all the time. Some of the information was about the area and history. And I missed a lot of that as well as details of cautions. Alternatively, A microphone would be helpful. Ppl on the guided tour d on't require the info as much because they are going down with the guide and won't miss any turns. read more

Warning! Do not use this company. This was a terrible experience starting at 3:00am. Here are the highlights. We had to sign a waiver as well as listen to a 30 min spiel about the rules and procedures about the ride down. Helmets need to be worn at all times, you cannot ride with your bags/backpacks and need to leave them in the car, If you cross the double solid yellow line ONE TIME, you will have to ride in the escort van and how you need to slow down on the shoulder when the van radios the leader in order to keep riders safe as they let the cars pass. On Mile 2 or 3, our escort van gets hit. Accidents happen but the way this company handled the situation was so bad and unprofessional. After the accident, our group leader did not tell us what was going on and left us by the side of the highway for about 20 mins. He came back on the phone, dropping F-bombs left and right. He gets off the phone, tells us the van is out of commission and says "I have a plan! Everyone needs to go get their stuff from the van and we will ride down to get breakfast". So now we have to ride down with our bags, which mine was huge, filled with layers of clothing, water and other stuff that I didn't plan on schlepping down the volcano with. On the way down, our guide was so far ahead of us that there was no way he could see all 12 people. He was looking back when he could but he missed he poor little girl right behind him losing control of her bike and crossing the double solid yellow line. We made a stop before the breakfast place. He told us that we needed to go faster. I told him that I didn't feel safe without the escort van. He said "don't worry. We have done this before". When we arrived at the breakfast place, it was closed. My helmet strap became unthreaded. He asked me to wear it unstrapped until we reached the next stop. After I declined to do that, he agreed that wouldn't be a good idea because something could happen even though it was such a short distance away. He fixed my strap. When we stopped at the next breakfast place (13 miles from the top). I privately went up to our guide to ask for a refund. He was initially polite and said that he would ask his boss for 50% off. He called his boss in front of me. I didn't listen to the entire conversation but I heard him tell his boss that people were asking to use the bathroom which is why we left the van. Lie. He was agitated when he got off the phone. He told me that his boss said no refund because I made the choice to not stay on the side of the highway with the van. When I expressed to him he did not present a choice and that he broke the rules that he and his company spent so much time emphasizing, he stood up and got loud. "Now I have to defend myself! I did not break the rules, I adapted them. I risked my life, turning around on my bike to keep you safe!". He also complained that he would have now have to fill out paperwork when he got back. I felt intimidated and figured that there was no point arguing so I retreated back to breakfast. After we were done, the van was able to meet up with us. The driver approached me. He was calm and not aggressive. He said that he talked to his manager who said that we could ask our activity director for our money back but we would have to leave the tour at that point. In other words, if we choose and try and get a refund then they would leave us stranded halfway up the volcano. And at least 3 times he said, "we all took a vote at the top and the majority of the group wanted to go down the hill without the van". I was so confused. I thought he was secretly trying to tell me to go with this story and then he will refund my money but he wasn't. Maybe this is what the guide told him. Maybe he thought if he said it enough times then I would believe it but it wasn't even close to being true. Let's just say that the vote took place with hidden hand gestures. I talked to at least 4 others in the group and they were complaining about how the tour guides seemed "sketchy" and how they felt it was unsafe to lead us down the hill. They also said that their breaks weren't working properly and they were grateful that they had knowledge about bikes because they were able to adjust them. That's 4 of them plus my friend and I which is 6. Not the majority. Plus the other half of the group was the family with the freighted-looking girl who got stuck on the other side of the lines. Once the van rejoined us the rest of the ride down was fine, except for our guide's plea for a tip and reminding us that he will have to waste time filling out paperwork. With that said, we thought it was weird that the manager/owner made no attempts to ask the group for a statement of what happened. I would have never booked with this company if I saw the Yelp reviews before hand. This was booked by our hotel. I told them our story and they refunded us without being asked to do so. read more

This is not a Haleakala sunrise experience. You do not go to the park, you do not see the sunrise over Haleakala you don't get anywhere close to the park. Be careful getting lured into this tour. If you are looking to experience the sunrise over Haleakala, this is not the tour. I've been to the top of Haleakala and it was awesome. Unfortunately, this tour was a joke. The ads you read make you think you are going to see the sunrise over Haleakala, if you've never been to the top, they my be able to fool you. If you have ever been to the top, you will know the difference. Such a disappointment! Learn from my mistake. Find a tour that takes you to top of Haleakala ~10,000 feet and into the park. read more

I've always wanted to bike down the volcano and am so glad I finally did it. Our bike guide and driver was good. It seems like they've been doing these for years. During our week in Maui, we decided to do the sunrise and bike ride down the Haleakela Volcano with Maui Mountain Bikes. What a mistake! We've been sitting in our broken down van for more than an hour. My issue is that they've had electrical problems with this van (according to the driver) in the past, so they should have repaired or replaced this van. Losing the engine, power steering and brakes while driving down Haleakela is not the experience we expected. Our 15 pax cargo van is a dump compared to the vast majority of vans and busses we saw at the summit. They operate from what looks like a temporary fenced in area with gravel, a picnic table, a portable canopy and trailers to hold all their equipment. The best part was the Keurig machines. Breakfast was a granola bar! Would not recommend! read more

Honestly super disappointed. The guy drove us to the top, mind you that was the most dangerous part of the journey. Whipping back and forth twisting and turning the whole time. Going over the lines and around other cars. I was nervous the entire time. Come to find they no longer take you to the top of the mountain. Rather than just a pull over space about 3/4 of the way up. We arrived too early to go anywhere, so we ended up waiting 45 mins for the sun to come up and we were able to see. After the sun came up a bit the guy gave us our bikes and said "see ya down there". No guide. No tour. Just us. We ended up just going as fast as our bikes would let us. I had the beater bike so I wasn't able to go very fast at all lest I have one of the wheels fall off. All the while the breaks screeched at me anytime I even touched them. Going down hill you can imagine how loud that ride was. The good part was the view coming down. Taking a moment to see the island from that vantage point was gorgeous. The smells coming down the mountain were pretty incredible as well. I loved the eucalyptus forest and the flowers on the ride as we whipped by them. The guy in the van followed us down. Passed us on the way. And flagged us to a stop when we were about to town. We stopped in town and were promised donuts. He spoke about them the entire way up the hill, so I figured they must be pretty good. Well that AND let's not forget the Baldwin family he apparently knew the sons sons son.. and rambled on about all damn day. Paying as much as we did I also figured donuts would be included in our price. NOPE! We bought them ourselves. While he bought himself groceries for dinner that night. We are the donuts while walking back to the van, and had no drink as we didn't have anywhere to put one to finish the ride. After that he sent us on our way again through town and down to the turn off where we started. All in all this experience was O.K. Nothing I would ever pay for again but happy we experienced it. I guess I got my hopes up. As I had been told of a long cruise with a guide, lunch included and sight seeing. This was just a whip down the hill on a beater bike and a self bought snack. Check it out but don't expect a lot. I'd even recommend driving up yourself for the views and just doing it that way. Save yourself the money. read more

I was skeptical about waking up so early so watch a sunrise and ride bikes down a mountain...but this trip exceeded all of my expectations! It was definitely an early day, but thankfully my boyfriend and I were able to snooze on the way up the mountain. Our tour guide, Dean, seemed to really know what was going on and we were one of the first groups on the mountain, which was great, because we got right in front to watch the sunrise. My boyfriend and I got so many breathtaking photos from "the first light" through sunrise and it was really magical! But, make sure you bring layers, it was so cold! They gave us jackets, but I definitely wish I had a few more layers. After that we rode bikes 27 miles down the mountain. It was amazing! We could see the whole island and we rode through so many different types of land that Maui has to offer. My boyfriend loved the fact that we rode through the countryside, including amazing Lavender fields. We just loved that we could see all the different parts of Maui and we were traveling by bike. We felt totally safe for the whole experience, and really loved it! For the drive back to Lahaina, our driver Jack, was full of awesome and fun history about Maui, it was awesome! read more

My partner and I purchased our tickets ($150.00 each) for the Sunrise bike ride because, besides the Road to Hana, this was THE tour that many of my friends told me I had to take. Now understand that the tour company is supposed to pick you up at 2:00am (yes that's when most people are getting in from last nights festivities) so the evening before should be cut short to get plenty of rest, which we did. We arrived at our pre-determined pick up spot at 1:56am for our 2:00am pick up and proceeded to wait till 2:45am with no one arriving to pick us up. Maui Mountain Cruisers just stood us up, no one came by to pick us up and NO ONE even bothered to call to let us know that they were either running late or had cancelled. Not only was our previous evening cut short so we could get plenty of rest, now the tour we had planned for today is a no go and its a little late to plan another tour. SHAME on you Maui Mountain Cruisers for providing the absolute worst customer service in Maui. read more

Bill and Pistol Pete were amazing, kind and experienced tour guides. I felt 100 percent safe with these guys the entire journey. Pete led the crew down the hill on the cruisers, while Bill drove the tour van at the end, keeping watch on traffic and communicating w Pete so he could lead us safely to side if need be. Having these two Native Hawaiian gentlemen made my "tour" experience feel more authentic, as they know their home island well and I appreciated the sharing Hawaiian history and lore.
