The bikes here range from OK to good. I should have spent the money for good. They were real quick to grab a bike, get my credit card, and get me out the door. There was virtually no safety check on the bike, and it was issued with a few mechanical problems and had to be turned around and taken back a few miles out. after that the front breaks failed the next day. They have a real laid back aloha spirit, and in general I'm all for that, but not when it comes to a piece of machinery that shares the road with autos. Would I rent a bike again next time in Maui - Absolutely!!! but probably not here, and I will be more particular about the condition of the bike next time.

This S5 from South Maui Bicycles took me all the way from Wailea to Haleakala -- great bike!!

Was super excited to rent a Cervelo S5 road bike in my size day-of! What a great road bike! It's actually on my list of splurge bikes to buy some day back home -- so it was almost like a demo ride! I was able to leave at dawn the next day, make it most of the way from Wailea up to the top of Haleakala (if only I was in a little better shape! next time!), and then back down into Kihei for a 4pm return. All for the $60 rental fee. The bike itself was several years old, had older SRAM kit on it, and the rear shifter was a bit finicky. But it was still a fast bike! Definitely recommend!

SMB road bike rentals are by far the best deal on the island. For $140/wk I rented an aluminum frame Trek which held up very well for several short and long trips, including the ~67 mi from Kihei around the West Maui Mountains and back to Kihei. You can get higher-end frames at other shops (Paia and Kula I believe for $160 and $180/wk) and they'll outfit you including a car rack, but if you've got all your own gear and know mostly what you're doing, SMB is great. The shop is very busy but they're flexible and staff still do a great job and offer good advice. Shawn even gave me tire-changing refresher. Thanks for helping make my trip home even more memorable!

Got a thorn in our double bob jogger. Literally fixed it in 5 minutes for $18! Ruined vacation averted!

Maui Sunriders Bike Shop in Kihei has a solid reputation, but my first experience with them was…read moredisappointing due to a preventable reservation issue. I reserved an e-bike on December 21 for a Christmas Day ride, with a return on the 26th. Their online system let me submit the reservation without any warnings or restrictions. But when I showed up to pick it up, I was told they wouldn't rent it to me because they're closed on the 25th, and someone else had the bike booked on the 26th. They also said they needed time to tune the bike in between. That explanation is understandable. What's not understandable is that nobody told me ahead of time. If they had reached out earlier, I could have adjusted the plan. I didn't even mind paying for an extra day to make it work. The bigger issue is that the reservation system shouldn't allow you to book dates that can't actually be fulfilled. I'm open to giving them another try, but they really need to fix the reservation process and communication so customers don't find out at pickup that the rental can't happen.

We quickly filled out a rental agreement then they gave us the rundown in operating an E-bike and answered question. They provided locks and backpacks for our water. They would have also provided helmets if we wanted them. Jeffery and staff were very friendly, knowledgeable, welcoming and efficient. This will definitely be our "go to" place for bike rentals in the future. Thanks for a great time!!

An electric bicycle is a fabulously fun way to explore Maui, since it provides just the boost needed to get up the hills as if they were much flatter, evens out your speed between uphill and downhill, and raises your average speed, while keeping it comfortably in the fun 'biking' zone, rather than the motor cycle zone. We were using the bike to get up and down the steep (7-12%) grades around where we were staying at 600 ft elevation while keeping it fun. It worked great, even for the less fit. These are bicycles with electric assist hub motors, not scooters. You pedal as much or as little as you like, and use the assist as much or as little as you like. It's a fun way to extend your range, keep the whole group together when they may range in fitness, and 'level out' those hills. I have no affiliation with Maui Electric Bikes, except as a happy customer.

I definitely recommend checking out this shop - there are so many beautiful alternatives for transportation!

The ride up is fun with a quick visit to the National Park included to see the crater firsthand, followed by some fun pictures jumping out of the clouds! Ride with Kimo to learn how they get those pictures! The ride itself starts just outside the National Park (limited by newer regulations limiting tour rides in the park itself) to enjoy the switchbacks - a video is included below! Those turns are not difficult - so don't let that part dissuade you from taking the tour. Stop at the town of Makawao for lunch (Freshies had a good menu) and ride like bandits back to the shop as the lag van holds traffic back a bit to clear the roadway for you! The island is open for business, save some small parts around Lahaina itself still recovering from the devastating fires of 2023, with limited impact elsewhere on the island. Take this trip now while the crowds are a bit lighter too, you won't regret it at all as Maui is just beautiful! Ka'anapala just north of Lahaina is hopping!

PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING…read more 1 Star - A Completely Different Experience Than What We Paid For Yesterday was my fourth time doing the Haleakalā sunrise self-guided bike excursion, and unfortunately, it was by far the most disappointing. My first ride was over 20 years ago, when we could bike all the way down from the crater without helmets and stop for breakfast at a charming café along the way. It was a gorgeous ride and an unforgettable experience. In 2017 and again in 2021, we were still able to enjoy a long downhill ride, starting outside the park and stopping at the same café. Yesterday, we brought our kids, now in their 20s, to experience it for the first time. What a disappointment. Instead of biking down the mountain, we spent roughly 90% of the excursion riding in a van and only biked about four miles. The tour guide was great, but we didn't pay over $1,400 for five people to sit in a shuttle and listen to a narrated tour. We paid for a self-guided downhill bike excursion. This is a completely different product from what we experienced on our previous visits. If the tour has changed this dramatically, customers should be clearly informed before booking and paying such an outrageous price. Do your research before booking. If you're expecting the classic downhill bike ride, as we were, you may be very disappointed. This was absolutely not the experience we paid for.
