Now that Havemen is out of business, and our Walmart is getting better all the time, and with a new Meijer coming to town, I guess I don't need Ace, unless I cannot find what I need somewhere else. The problem is not with the cashiers or other staff; they are always nice. The problem is when I need technical help. I often get some kind of sublte attitude, as though I am interrupting their little social group in the back. And, when I do find help, the person usually lacks technical and product knowledge. Maybe it's me, and I have simply been unlucky to get the trainees or disgruntled employees almost every time FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS since I moved to town. The "Ace, the Helpful Place" motto does not seem to fit this particular store.

I'm not sure what happened during the other reviewer's experience, but I've returned several items to Cronk's that I purchased at other Ace locations. Before we moved to our place in Newaygo full-time, we had it as a vacation home, so I would buy something at Gemmen's Ace in Hudsonville that I hoped would work. If it didn't, I'd return it to Cronk's. There doesn't seem to be much of a small-town upcharge, and I like to support a local business rather than drive to a box store on Alpine. It's a good value for the time I save.

Todays visit went so so. At the onset I inquired re for the availability of a replacement bulb for…read moremy refer. After the first associate couldn't find that section for bulbs, he called for help and we were directed to the correct spot. I specifically mentioned the voltage at the onset which he either didn't pay attention to or disregarded thereby trying to sell me on buying the wrong one". He insisted in so many words that he was correct and I was incorrect although I had the orig. burnt out one in my possession for validity. I had to explain to him for a couple minutes before he hopefully caught on. Guess he's been working there for years. Good thing I took in the orig or "I wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Proof wise that is.

Before I could finish asking the person working customer service said "we don't have those" I started over and it was a specific screw and the only response was "we have a lot of screws" I replied "I guess you cannot help" and walked away. He was perfectly fine with that level of customer service. I reached out through their social media first and was just told to go follow some other link to re tell my complaint. I had initially reached out privately because as a business owner I always appreciate being contacted so I can take care of the issue. To be given a link and shuffled off felt dismissive and tone deaf. This was once a great little neighborhood hardware but it is not the same with the new ownership
