Took my vehicle in for an oil change. A month later I'm 3 qts low. I drive maybe once a week, tops, so I know it's not from running it hard. No oil on the ground where it's usually parked. I call them and they can't even tell me what grade of oil they put in. Take it back to them, they say they can't find a leak. Take it to the dealer and pay $300+ for them to also tell me there's no leak. I used to recommend this place to everyone, but now seeing they can't even manage a basic oil change since the management change, I highly recommend you take your vehicle elsewhere. read more

My boyfriends car was leaking antifreeze fluid and overheating a lot. We had the car towed to here and they first said it will be $400 to fix. Get a call 30-40 minutes later saying it will now be $500. We go ahead and pay because he needs his car obviously. Two days go by and they call and say it's ready to be picked up and everything is great. We get no further than 8 minutes on the highway and it overheats again. We go back to the shop and they say "we don't see anything wrong with it and when we take it out, it doesn't overheat" and we were sent home again. We get a little bit further this time and it overheats again! Overall, they made him pay all this money for his car to not get fixed what so ever. I took my car in to Matthews Auto Center for a Virginia state inspection and oil change. They are absolutely lovely people and did good, quick work on my vehicle. While I was there, I got a quote for some additional work needed and it was a very fair price, so I'll be taking my car back to them for that repair and plan to return for anything else I need in the future. All I have to say is that this business AMAZING!! It's hard to find a good mechanic, it's like finding a good dentist! Let's be honest, if a Dentist or Mechanic tells you that you need work done, you kinda have to do it in fear that your car will break down or even worse...fall apart while driving, same with teeth, we need them too. So finding someone that genuinely cares and takes care of you is rare and this is Matthews Auto Center. Most of the time you know your car needs work when you take it in, they address the problem and that's it! They don't tell you you need a bunch of work that you don't need. If they tell me I need something, I completely trust them. These guys are ALWAYS super busy, so they don't need to do unneeded work. They do it right and do it well, priced fairly! I've been going here since I moved from California, my family takes their cars there, many friends do too! I can't say enough good things about this family owned business. I needed tires rotated (which I don't think they did because my tires only had 20 lbs of air when I got vehicle back), antifreeze flush, radiator flush, and thermostat replaced. My friend called and got quote of $300 so I called and scheduled the maintenance the next day. When I dropped off my vehicle, I asked what it would cost, $520! Told them my friend called previous day and quote was $300! There answer was well you don't have to do the maintenance if you don't want (I had already taken off work for this)!! I am VERY disappointed in Matthews Auto Center. I feel they took advantage of me because I am a woman. They charged me $200 EXTRA! I WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN!!!! read more

Matthews totally rocks! There have been numerous times when they could have tried to soak me on something beyond my understanding, instead they consistently err both on the side of customer service and finding the least expensive option. One time I thought I'd blown an exhaust manifold; Matthews found a crack in it and welded it rather than replace it, saving me likely close to four figures. Time and again they've worked with me to come up with the best options given the age of the vehicle and what it's needed for. Best yet you can actually talk to the guys, walk into the shop, see what's going on, all the while being treated with fairly and with good humor. I had my 2002 Suburban serviced a couple of times prior with no problems. Then after that, each service was dismal. First, they custom bent a new cat back exhaust, which I quickly found out was shoddily installed using not hangers, but cheap weld's binding it to the frame, rather than hangers. This set up failed within months. A close friend had the same set up installed on his hummer from the same shop. Without proper exhaust hangers, the lack of flex snapped the cheap welds in the same way. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I had an online tire shop some drop ship 4 brand new Mickey Thompson tires to Matthews to have installed on my Suburban. At close to 400 per tire, this was a rather large investment. While the tires were being installed, I also had $700 worth of service work done. Imagine my surprise when, on my way home, I had a catastrophic flat tire. After close inspection, I quickly realized that the the rubber valve stem failed, that all 4 valve stems were not replaced, and were all severely dry rotted. As standard practice, tire shops always replace these as a safety precaution. When I contacted the owner, Johnny Matthews, he tersely informed me that had I had his shop order the tires, he would have replaced them. Not only that, I was on my own to replace the 20mi old tire out of pocket. Given that I was a repeat customer who had spent a ton of money at his shop, I was immediately disgusted....since he could have at least mentioned the severe dry rot on the valve stems. Needless to say, I had to purchase a new tire out of pocket. He did this out of spite for not ordering tires from him. I would NEVER recommend any service at this shop after the shoddy exhaust installation and lack of concern for my own safety by choosing to save $4 per tire on a valve stem which was all it took to ensure his repeat customer's safety.
