The owner is very friendly and appreciative of your business. Our latest dinner there was on New Year's Eve. The Steak I had was fantastic and my wife loved the Sautéed Shimp. I had to give them a 1 star because we were robbed. My husband and I have come here on a few occasions. And love one of their desserts. I have always got the clams with linguine in spicy sauce. It's always been good. However, I ordered it during this pandemic to make help support my local businesses and was appalled by what I got. I received 4 clams in watery bland tasting sauce and the paste as undercooked. We called back and was told the food was cooked as usual and the man who answered wouldn't do anything to work with us and correct their crappy food. This is not their norm. My first time here and we were treated very well! We had reservations and they sat us very quickly. I ordered the Cajun Grilled Rib Eye Steak, 16 oz. with onion rings and mash potato, one of the best steaks I've ever had. Never disappointed at Mattar's. We have been dining here since it was Mattar's Villa and later Mattar's. Tonight was no exception. Me- shrimp scallop risotto , delightful Dad- linguine with white clam,off the chart yummy. Mom- fish and chips . Fresh cod light batter grease free . Again thumbs up. The 5 stars was for the area. We are huge fans. The food is great. The service is great The atmosphere is great. And the prices are very very good. This is now our second favorite restaurant in the area besides the Tewks Inn. We could eat here once per week. I always get the crab cake app. So should you. it's fantastic. The best way to describe it is a crab cake tower coated with shrimp. Order it. You will love it. The oysters are always fresh. Usually someone gets them. I've had the steak, the fish, and pasta dishes - everything is tasty and reasonably priced. My son ordered the ribs and he wasn't a fan but other than that we haven't been disappointed. Overcharged us for a bottle of wine we ordered while waiting for a table on Valentines Day 2010. Owner rushed us off to a table despite knowing there was a descrepancy with the bar bill. I believe this was the 3rd time that I've been to mattars. The second being the best of the two. About 5 years ago I went there for my bday, my then 19 yo son wanted to pay for the meal, we were 7 in all. He didn't know about tipping as he never paid a restaurant bill before. The waitress came back after taking the signed receipt and slammed the bill in front of my son and asked why the tip was so little for a table of 7 and demanded for it to be more. I didn't go back to mattars almost 4 years due to this event. Not that I don't think she shouldn't have been compensated which my husband showed my son how to calculate the tip and fixed it, but because of the way she went about bringing it to our attention, very rude. She ruined the night. After 4 years went back with my husband, had a good time, the food was good. Went there again a week ago, for my bday non the less, ordered the scallops, my two friends ordered the steak and don't really remember the others. One of my friends asked for her steak to be medium well, my other friend asked for it to be medium rare. They both came out to be medium well. So when we informed the waiter that the steak was over cooked he apologized and said he would take it back. A few minutes later he comes back with the same steak and tells us that the chef said that it was the correct temperature. My friend who worked in the food industry just decided to take the steak although she knew her steak and the way it should look. She worked at a steak house before. But even our other friends and myself knew that the steak had been over cooked. My scallops were dry and tough, but seeing the way my friend was treated I didn't say anything. I don't think I will be going back to Mattars any time soon. With the prices of meals going up, I would expect the chef to be mindful that the people paying for the food want it exactly the way they asked for it. To pay $50 for a steak that was over cooked ?? We've been driving past this place but never actually stopped until last weekend. The food is absolutely amazing the service is impeccable. The location is just right. It's been awhile since we found a restaurant that has such beautiful outdoor seating balcony style - it really makes you enjoy your meal that much more. Every single dish that we ordered was absolutely delicious. From the freshly baked bread all the way to the beautifully decorated drinks. Plenty of parking and really reasonable prices makes this place our new favorite hangout. We will be back soon to taste more of the menu. read more

Mr. Matter is the epitome of what an owner of a restaurant is supposed to be. He welcomes and treats you as if he is welcoming you into his home. Delicious!!! Haven't been in a while, came for Father's Day and it was out of this world!! It was always good but it turned a corner, in a good way. It's phenomenal. 1. The new outdoor patio is beautiful. 2. The margaritas were to die for, refreshing and tasty. 3. We were told there is a new chef and whoever he/she is, they are on point. Everything was truly delicious. The hummus was so fresh, gnocchi was melt in your mouth. 4. The server was extremely attentive without being in your face. He was trained well. Very personable too. Only GREAT things to say about this place! From the moment you walk through the door, you are greeted with smiles from a very friendly wait staff. Last night was my second time there with my girlfriend (for her birthday). The owner is also extremely friendly, making sure to greet every table and made sure everyone was enjoying their meals. The food? Hands down the best food in the area. I told my girlfriend last night that this could be my favorite spot to eat! The first time we went, I got the pork chop special with sweet potatoes and other veggies that was out of this world! The calamari was perfectly crispy and delicious, a great way to start our meal. Last night, my second time back, we had steamers to start. The sauce had bits of sausage in it, INCREDIBLE! As my main dish, I got the NY strip steak, cooked medium well (cooked perfectly) with a side of mashed potatoes and other veggies. I only wish I was able to take a picture of the food to share with all of you. Thank you to Mattar's, the wait staff, the cooks, and everyone else that makes this establishment what it is. We stopped in for the first time and have to say WOW. This was the best meal we've had since we moved to the area. The chef here knows what he's doing. Every dish we had was tasty and enjoyable. We started with the cauliflower fritters and steamed clams. Both were good and I have to say the clam broth was among the best I've ever had. I had the risotto which was cheesy and delicious. Hub had the tuna special and he (and I) both thought it was flawlessly prepared. The service was professional, helpful, and friendly. The cocktails we had were perfect. My martini was perfectly prepared and the speciality cocktails were all delicious. The owner made his rounds after diners had been served to make sure all was as it should be. Everyone seemed to be very pleased as we were as well. The only thing I can find to ding them on is the interior had an odor that I didn't particularly enjoy but it was not an issue as we had asked to be seated outdoors. Also sitting outdoors, you need to be prepared for some road noise because it is a major road outside but they have heat lamps to keep you comfy and the grounds are very well maintained which leads to a pleasant dining experience. We went here to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. The ambience was really nice, candles lit everywhere. Everyone was so attentive and friendly. We couldn't ask for a better waiter, Andrew was on top of everything, he made the night perfect. The food was delicious and generous portions. They brought out a nice piece of chocolate cake and sang for my boyfriend happy birthday.very reasonable one appetizer , 2 entrées and one dessert $52. We went here on Black Friday. It wasn't too busy. They had live music, which was nice. The service was decent. The food, however, was DELICIOUS. It's hard to find quality food without traveling into the city-- this will quench your thirst for high end food. The prices are what you would expect- pricey but not unreasonable. Let's see where do I start? I suppose it's easiest to start with the cons and that would have to be the hockey pucks...err, I mean dinner rolls. I honestly don't see the point in offering these things as I feel like they must get these from [insert grocery store name here] in the dayS old bakery dept. Seriously, these have no benefit unless you like eating chunks of butter on top of bricks. IF Mattars is going to offer any bread, make sure it's FRESH and tasty, otherwise, just get rid of these wretched things! The other thing, and it's minor, would be the OVERLY attentive staff. Being attentive, is good, but having the staff huddle in one corner of the room to watch over you, bad. I would also like to "opt out" of the crumb cleaning. Although our waiter was probably instructed to do this, coming over to the table to wipe off crumbs (twice), not so good. Some people may love this, I personally don't. And I can live with a few miniscule crumbs for the sake of comfort and an uninterrupted meal. The food itself was on the plus side. We had the Mediterranean salad with salmon which was very good, a side of their roasted potatoes, which were cooked well, very tasty and a fair amount for 2 people. My grandmother threw one of my bridal showers at Mattar's in 2005. What I remember was great food but that I felt I was in someones overdecorated home. I expected plastic on the furniture and doily's on my plates. All in all the day was fantastic. They did a great job catering to a large group of ladies. On a recent trip to Jersey, I brought my grandparent's back to this restaurant. They have gone through a recent renovation to become a "bistro" and I think it was a great decision! I love all of the design upgrades! It was very warm, inviting and chique. The changes to the menu offered something for everyone, no matter what your budget, while maintaining the quality of the original, more expensive Mattar's. There were only a couple of disappointments. I loved that they serve you a roll at a time rather than dropping off a basket for the table. However, the roof of my mouth got abused by the hardness of my roll! Some fine tuning and the bread could be delicious! My last complaint, is that, although a very nice young man (wow! I sound old!) the bus boy stacked the dishes that we were bringing home. That's a BIG restaurant faux pas. Please, just bring me a box to the table or take the leftovers back to the kitchen separately from the dirty dishes. All in all, my grandparents loved the dinner and talked about it for hours afterwards! I'm sure they'll be back! read more

The food was decent, I had the orange sesame salad with shrimp. The potion size was good for dinner and the shrimp was fresh. I would avoid the fondue. Having travelled quite a but in central Europe I can say it was not an authentic mixture and the accompanying dipping items were strange ... Raw zucchini? My real problem was with the service. A member of our party was late and we were being pressured to get drinks and order, on a not so busy Tuesday. At the end of the meal our waitress decided to put some extra charges on our bill, about $25 extra on what should have been a $75 bill. She put 2 sodas and 3 alcoholic drinks from another table in our bill. We had to chase someone down to fix it. Bottom line with this place... Check your bill. My friend invited me to go out to eat with his grandfather here four years ago because he knew I loved crab cakes. Well when I got their I ordered my crab cake with high expectations and to say that they were met was an understatement. It was the best crab cake I have ever had. So much crab and not a lot of breading, it was just perfect. When I attended college in Hackettstown I would always reward myself at the end of the year with a Mattar's crab cake. Not expensive at all considering the size and taste. I had gone about 6 months without seeing my girlfriend at the time and wanted to spoil her with a nice fancy meal and new Mattar's was the place to take her. We had a nice candle lit dinner outside, perfect night for a nice dinner. She ordered mediterranean tapas which was hummus, baba ganoush, warm pita and olives. This was a very good appetizer. For her main corse she ordered the arugula salad and she loved the golden raisin vinaigrette. If you wanna go on a nice date or have a special occasion like an anniversary I definitely recommend Mattar's Bistro. read more

Finally tried this local Bistro after passing it every day and thinking, "Hey, we should try it!" Now I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to give it a try, because it was fantastic. We made a reservation, although on the night we went it was probably not necessary. When we entered, we were immediately greeted by the hostess who sat us quickly. Our server came over right away, gave us information on the specials and brought us drinks back. The staff was extremely attentive, and while they do hang out in the dining room, I didn't feel rushed at all, but it was great, as soon as something should be picked up or refilled, someone was there to make it happen. The food was great. We tried the sushi, which was fresh and fantastic, and settled in for some corn beef and cabbage (it was the day after St. Patty's day). First time. Pretty good impression. There was a local band playing on Saturday night. Nothing special, but was not intrusive while you ate dinner. The house salad dressing was returned by both people at my table who ordered it. I had the arugula salad and it was very good. The dressing was a thick vinaigrette with candied pecans that was really good. The salad also had fresh Italian peppers. I had the seafood risotto that had three decent size shrimp and 4 scallops. It was a very good dish. The portion was just the right size. My wife and our friend , had the veal scallopini in a brown sauce with mushrooms. It was a big hit. The veal was tender and cooked just right. The serving was pretty large. Jeff had the NY strip. He felt it was okay. A small serving of string beans with the dishes. Two vegetable sides for additional charge. One was the vegetable special, pan fried Brussels spouts with bacon, onions and small diced potato - that was good. Also had creamed spinach that was very good. Dessert. They all shared an apple crisp that was made with oatmeal. All seemed to like it. I had the home made mint chocolate ice cream - that was really good. I was a little surprised that the menu was not larger. What I had was good, but there was probably only 3 or 4 other things i would have ordered. i like a little more variety than that. Service was outstanding. I read the menu online first and saw a picture of a potato mushroom soup. I went to Mattar's yesterday, ordered the potato mushroom soup, and when it arrived at my table it looked NOTHING like the picture. The picture had chunks of potato everywhere. What they served was a cream base with nothing in it, and it was tasteless. I asked for some salt. There was no salt nor pepper on the tables outside. They also provided free-of-charge these square chunks of a yellow bread covered in sesame seeds. This bread was STALE AND TASTELESS. I wondered how many times they had reheated it (it was served warm). I only ordered the soup thinking I would wait to see how it was before ordering anything else. I did NOT order anything else. I paid the bill of $6.40 for the soup plus a $2 tip and left extremely disappointed. If u r not sure if a restaurant is going to be good or not, you do NOT have to order everything at once. Order soup or a salad or an appetizer and wait to see if that is any good before ordering anything else. PS I could not sit inside because the entire indoor restaurant stunk of this awful, extremely strong seafood smell. It felt like I was inside a can of Old Bay Seasoning, and I had to eat outside on the terrace where most of the other customers were also. Don't they turn on their exhaust fans in the kitchen? There is no reason for this overwhelming seafood smell in the main dining room. I could not breath in there. TURN ON YOUR EXHAUST FANS IN THE KITCHEN! read more
