We came here for Mother's Day and had a delicious early dinner. We ordered Burrata Rustica and Fried Calamari for apps: the burrata was smooth, creamy, and fresh tasting and the fried calamari was tender, though the sauce was a little too sweet and there was a little too much of it for my liking. My mom and I had the Veal Scallopini for our entrees and it was wonderful- cooked perfectly and the tagliatelle was a nice al dente. My husband really enjoyed his Rack of Lamb and received it very rare, just like he requested; and my dad loved his Halibut special in a pomegranate sauce that was also nice and tender. For desserts, I had the Creme Brulee which was melt-in-your-mouth good, my husband had the raspberry sorbet which he really liked, and my dad had the carrot cake, also very good. I have been coming here with fantastic experiences for years.....I cannot believe that I have yet to do a well earned positive review (mommy-brain in full effect LOL) Year after year the atmosphere, service, food, and libations have been stellar. The owner also consistently walks around to ensure that his guests are happy, for years! This time we started with the soup special, Guinness beef stew, SO good. Then we had the oysters which were delicious. For our entrees, I had the branzino which was also delicious. My hubby got the short rib pastrami special...WOW! We thought it was going to be a type of Reuben sandwich, but it was a platter, and it was amazing, so I'm glad it was suggested to us by the staff. We normally don't have room for dessert, but we made sure to try one of them since they are all homemade; we tried the red velvet cake, which was really good! Heading home from PA, my wife and I were looking for an easy place to stop for an early dinner off Rt 80. I'd had Mattar's Bistro bookmarked for a while after reading many positive reviews from Yelp friends. We're really glad we came here, it was a great time with nice people and awesome food! We wanted to go casual so we sat in the bar area at a high top table. It's a very nice setup with a beautiful bar and TVs to watch the games. The first thing that hits you is how friendly everyone is. Our servers, Chris and Nicole, could not have been better. We ordered cocktails and the spinach dip appetizer to start. Keeping it light, we both ordered salads for meals. My wife had the Arugula and I had the Summer Special. Both were outstanding! The summer salad made with watermelon, corn, and goat cheese was awesome! We liked the food so much, we decided to split a dessert. Chris recommended the peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Wow! Just fantastic! To top it off, the owner came by to make sure everything was ok and wound up sitting at our table and chatted for a while. I love how well all the customers were treated and the fact that the staff knew so many people by name, shows there are many regulars who dine here often. I have been to Mattar's Bistro a couple of times. I can say they are consistent, but consistently average. It's clear the intention is there to offer a five-star dining experience, but there are areas MB's falls short. The food is well, uninspired. The menu is quite varied but the gastronomical logic is missing. A smaller, more well-balanced menu would do wonders. For example, wings are not a must-have nenu item at a fine dining restaurant. Not is sushi a well-fitted addition to this type of place (which I tried and was not just disappointed in the overall flavor, but the description of the preparation on the menu was totally missing and I ended up with a fried roll of lobster salad vs chunks of meat wrapped in seaweed and rice. Guess I could have asked how it was prepared but there's also the expectation from a fine dining establishment that it would be made clear on the menu). For dinner, I ordered the short rib raviolo and my partner has the shrimp and scallops risotto. The waitress misplaced the order and I was first served lobster ravioli, which they graciously and swiftly moved to correct (they took back my partner's risotto as well, which I appreciated and is a signal of a fine-dining protocol so we wouldn't end up eating at separate times). However, you could tell the risotto had just been placed under the warmer while they prepared my short rib raviolo bc it came back a bit hardened and not as piping hot as it appeared the first time. The short rib raviolo with mushroom pomodoro was underwhelming, tastewise. It was a beautiful presentation on the plate with 4 large raviolo, but each was barely filled with short rib. I literally had to open one up to make sure there was filling. The raviolo dough itself tasted homemade but only bc it was flavorless, overly thick, and a bit dry where the sauce wasn't covering it. My partners risotto was flavorful and the scallops beautifully cooked. The sauce was rich and bursting with garlic (so much garlic in some bites it was nearly acidic) My biggest gripe was my dirty martini. It was neither dirty and didn't quite taste like a martini at all. Not sure the bartended is well-versed enough to pull off what should be the shining star of a cocktail at a restaurant like this. Loved that they offered blue cheese-stuffed olives, however, it is a well-known (with good bartenders) that you always place an odd number of olives in a martini--I only got two. First world problems? Absolutely. But when I'm paying good money for a well-appointed drink on my night out at an establishment that claims to be fine dining, I expect the expected. Overall, service is great. They certainly have enough staff swirling around for new silverware, bread and water service, etc. Def a noticeable brigade though... slightly disruptive at times. The ambience is not bad...feels a bit generic and unsophisticated. Appreciated the light dimming as the night wore on to keep the atmosphere intimate. Really going into the details with this one because I do think Mattar's Bistro could really be a standout in this part of New Jersey but they have some fine tuning to do. Would suggest starting with updating and refining the menu. More flavor in fewer well-prepared dishes would go a long way compared to trying to boil the ocean, as they say. read more

Hands down Mattars Bisto is the absolute best dining venue in the Allamuchy/Hackettstown area. The food is superb especially the seafood . The specials are always changing and never disappoint. The portions are large and the prices are very fair. The restaurant is beautiful and has a wonderful outdoor seating area. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and attentive. Ordering a cocktail special is a must. The owner Mr. Mattar is a true gentleman. He greats every guest warmly and goes out of his way to make the dining experience personal and enjoyable. We traveled to Jersey to meet our son's gfs parents and she picked this spot. At first because of its very rural location I thought it would be hit or miss BUT it wasn't. Was up in the area exploring fall foliage and a lovely sunset over the mountain tops and on the way back home south passed by and stopped at matters bistro for dinner so glad we did, what a welcoming surprise. Very courteous very attentive and very nice menu and in the end very tasty food as well. For my first visit I had the hollander main muscles off the appetizer menu, white wine basil garlic fresh tomatoes and a slice of Crostini. A lovely dish nisi's muscles 100% of them opened really nice flavor of the white wine basil with a plum fresh tomatoes definitely hit the spot now I got to come back and try other dishes. To accompany I had a glass of the Sauvignon Blanc certainly complemented the mussel dish. Great for small groups certainly for large size groups. read more

I cannot say enough how accommodating and helpful Mr. Mattar was in helping us get this set up and the day of the event. The guests had a choice of three delicious entrees that were well received by our guest along with a celebration cake made by their onsite pastry chef that everyone raved about! It was delicious! Been there twice in a month. 1st time- Shortribs above average. Not real hot, but good flavors. Service above average. 2nd visit- Filet mignon- served RAW...server seemed put out that I asked for it to be cooked medium rare. -Waited twenty minutes while the rest of my party enjoyed their entrees. Owner asked what the issue was and did NOTHING. -Burrata appetizer was good. -Desserts- Tres leches cake was HORRIBLE- take it off your menu if you can't deliver. Wife had carrot cake which was good. No apologies for raw filet... not expecting a comped meal but at least buy dessert or coffee. Waitress was put off that we actually wanted dessert...end of her shift as she split as soon as dropping check. Restaurant was half filled on a Saturday evening....note to owner!!! read more

Established fine dining restaurant with a varied menu where you can find casual food (wings, pizza, sushi) or fish, steak or pasta entree's. There are even sandwiches on the menu that you can get at dinner. We dine here often in the bar area as it's down the street from us, excellent service, bartenders who make the best martini's, & overall a great menu. This place takes COVID-19 seriously as they will bring the food to your car wearing a mask & gloves. I've never attended an event here downstairs but I'd imagine they do a fabulous job based on how how popular this place is! check it out! read more

Looking for a last minute dinner option for a Sunday birthday celebration,this spot checked a lot of boxes: Central meeting point for guests from Jersey and PA Located right off of Rt. 80 Served mashed potatoes (request of the birthday lady) This spot was great, and looks especially nice ona warm day with the outdoor patio seating. Vibes were very good-- most people were groups of 5 or more, having family dinner. Food was really good-- I heard no complaints from anyone at the table. Not sure if this is a one off but we did not enjoy our experience, though the staff was lovely and our meal (one appetizer/ two entrees / dessert / one specialty drink) came out timely , the specialty plates didn't pair well I had the lobster tail and the soft crab pasta was excessively acidic , the firecracker shrimp $17 was just ok , and the dessert baileys brownie $15 was less impressive and overpriced. Worst place ever. Tried this several times over the years and every time it's worse than the last time. I played it safe, or so I thought, by just ordering a Caesar salad this time around. What I received was what looks like from the bottom of the bag from Costco, the white bottom stalks of Romain lettuce, browned from age. One or two of the leaves had a dab of salad dressing and they put some cheese on top and called the Caesar salad. Worst-spent $15 of my life. My husband had a shrimp appetizer and he was sick that night and all the next day. Our Companions' food was better than ours, but mediocre at best. Would give them a zero if I could. I called the owner because I wanted to have them cater a party for me. Mattar's had previously catered a party for a friend who had her party at my house. I thought it would be a nice change from the usual caterers my friends and I use. I spoke to the owner who told me to look at their website. I did, and called him back two days later. There were many great sounding options but no prices. I called back and he asked me what I wanted. He told me prices would be between $50-100 per person and another $1000 for servers and a bartender. I wanted horsdeourves and a buffet dinner. No dessert. I asked him to tell me what I could get for $50 and I would increase it from there. He was very vague. He told me he would put something together and get back to me. I called back 2 days later and was told he was unavailable and would get back to me. I have called him 4 times over the past week and have never gotten the courtesy of a return phone call. I have wasted over a week of my time. Today at 4 pm I called and voiced my frustration. I was told he was right there but on another call and he would call me back as soon as he was done. It is now 7:15 and I just called Mattar's to tell them how rudely I was treated and that I was writing a Yelp review about it. They didn't even care. I don't understand why a business owner would be so rude to someone who was trying to hire him. If he didn't want to do my party, the least he could have done was call me back and tell me. Instead he just had employees tell me he would call me right back and then just ignored me. read more

Amazing food and atmosphere. Gorgeous new outdoor patio space. The crispy calamari appetizer was perfectly fried and had a great combination of sauces with the sesame seeds. The scallops with lobster black rice was delicious! The scallops were perfectly cooked. The parsnip purée and the rice paired well with the scallops. Here we are - back in precedented times (you know, after unprecedented times), and Mattar's is still going strong! Funny, I was looking at my old review, and it was a few weeks before I was getting married - almost 10 years ago! Still great food, still strong staff, ambiance, and of course Mattar himself. Opted for the pasta special (Bolognese) , which was incredible, but I couldn't finish it after the Mediterranean hummus appetizer. So we took it home. Service is fantastic, ambiance is amazing. We had an enjoyable lunch at Mattar's Bistro, highlighted by exceptional service in a setting that was open with great views of the woods. My chicken Milanese sandwich was terrific, my wife's cheeseburger was "cooked perfectly," my other two guests enjoyed the sheppard's pie and grilled pork chops.
