Finding contractors that you can trust are really hard to find. I found Matt through a friend of a family member. Since he was recommended 2 degrees out, I was a little skeptical at first. However, I needed to get work done on my new basement ASAP since I had Permaseal coming in to do other work. I had been in talks with another contractor prior to working with Matt. After meeting Matt and speaking with him, I immediately ceased contact with my original contractor. Not only was Matt easier to get into contact with he was much more attentive to our needs, and we received an estimate within the week. Since our first meeting, we have used his company for various work around the house, so I will break up my review by job. Side note: our home is almost 90 years old, not the easiest to work with.
Basement Demo: We had to demo a full bathroom in the basement and take down the dropped ceiling. Don, the foreman, came and was super nice. He got the work done a day earlier! Even though the old basement gave them plenty of trouble, I never heard any complaints. Matt called me daily or emailed me to give me an update of what was happening and what was left to do.
General handyman repair: Don came back to re-mount our vent hood in the kitchen. The previous owners had used the wrong size screws and it was now loose. Not only did Don re mount the hood, he made sure to re tape the vent opening and made sure the once crooked hood was no longer crooked!
Paint: Originally Marvin came in to remove the popcorn ceilings and repaint them white. He did such a great job patching up our uneven ceiling and painting, it made such a huge difference. He could have just removed the popcorn and then painted, but he took the time to try and even out the whole ceiling. We ended up having him come back to paint the first floor. Since our home is so old we have some great woodwork in our house and Marvin was very careful to not get any paint on them and he appreciated my desire not to paint or stain them. Not only did Marvin patch up holes and cracks, he patched up any imperfection in the wall that would make the final product not perfect. I am so happy with the finished job that I am kicking myself for not doing the whole house before me moved! We decided on the painting last minute but Matt and Marvin rearranged their schedules to make sure it would be done before we moved in.
Plumbing: Not too much done here. Tom fixed some shoddy pipework under the sink so that everything flows much smoother, he sealed the old toilet pipes and removed other unwanted pipes in the basement and installed a new water heater. Quick job, nicely done, no complaints.
Electrical: We place 8 mini can lights in our front room to add some overhead light. Matt was a great resource on options we had and giving recommendations regarding what was possible. With the home being so old, you never know what you will find, and they ended up making a lot more holes in the ceiling, since the previous owner had done some serious odd work to the ceiling. When I walked in to the house with the swiss cheese ceiling, I was a bit scared, but at then end, between Marvin and Matt and the electrician, everything worked out perfectly and you would never know there was any difficulty with placing the lights.
Throughout the different jobs being done at the house, Matt always checked in with me and made sure that I knew he stood by his workers and work. Any little imperfection I noticed he came immediately and fixed, no problem. He really worked with my time line and was mindful that I was commuting from the city to the burbs to let the workers in. All the work was complete on time and exceeded our expectations, my husband and I will definitely be using Matt and his team again. I am glad to know he uses specialists on his team, instead of using a few guys that think they can do everything. Since we are trying to save money, Matt also gave us advice on things we could do on our own vs. needed professional work. If I had any questions for DIYing things, he never held back on advice and gave me great tips and pointers. Oh, and his wife had a baby during all of this and he was still on top of everything! So happy we found him! read more
