Mushroom roll
Jessica G.

Hyper excited every time I figured there's new bakery opened in town, and I was simply so triggered to just be there ASAP. IG algorithm led me to Matilda's and I was quite surprised knowing it took place in the Santa Monica Airport area. I've passed by this area so many times without making a turn into it, and now getting pretty impressed how nice it was with huge open-air space where people could just sit and chill, enjoy people-watching, or playing with their pets. Matilda's space itself was PRETTY HUGE for common bakery. They're still on their soft opening so very limited opening hours (3 as of now) and still limited menu as well since not everything called out on their web menu was available yet. Besides, all items ran out extremely fast. We were there around 90 minutes post the opening time and there were very limited selections available. They're baking some more throughout the days, but not many. We ended up with their Mushroom Roll, Shakshuka Danish, and Honey Butter Toast. OMG - run don't walk guys, they're all super good in their own ways. The pastry base was fragrant and perfectly flaky, with super luscious fillings. I'd say their savory selections were pretty peculiar, yet they nailed all flawlessly. Writing this got me drooled again over that tasty shakshuka and impeccably cooked egg. They honey butter toast was mindblowing. Crispy in every bite, pleasantful honey sweetness well complemented by the twist of sea salt. I honestly really wanted to try their rich butter selections as called out on their web menu that they offered plenty of different French and US butter with different brands and flavor profile. Unfortunately, it's not available yet. Good reason for me to make a come back!! I did get their cute cap home too and still thinking on their t-shirt I was contemplating to buy.

Awesome new bakery from the folks next door at Cloverfield where you'll find great pastries, nice bread (with French butter), cheery service, and nice indoor/outdoor seating. Their almond croissant had a great balance of sweetness and light flaky crunch from the lamination. Cookie was delightful as well - soft chew in the center but gently firm on the outside. Their simply ingredient bread was great to pair with sandwiches at much as well! They have parking and nice outdoor seating as well as new swag/shirts.

Cool vibes and convenient location with parking! Lots of people for their soft opening but the service was fast and friendly :D I got the danish and really love the texture. Soft and crunchy and the middle had an egg with great flavor. I paired it with a latte and would like to try the almond croissant next since that was sold out when I was there!

Sausage Roll

On the way home from Dog ppl, I got a sudden craving for a pastry and remembered that Matilda's opened last week right next to Cloverfield by the Santa Monica Airport. The huge parking lot is always a bonus, especially in Santa Monica! The patio is very nice and service is excellent. We had the chocolate croissant, ham and cheese croissant, Sausage roll, and a chocolate chip cookie. The sausage roll was the winner for me. The pastry is flakey and golden brown and the meat inside is savory...I'm going back tomorrow for another one. The cookie was topped with sea salt and is on the sweeter side, but I really liked it. The chocolate croissant was studded with dark chocolate which is always a plus. My friend, however, did not like the ham and cheese croissant and said it was too doughy inside. I, however, am going to go back and order my own tomorrow...stay tuned!

By far the best chocolate croissant I have ever had! So soft and buttery, the chocolate is the perfect amount and it is nicely melted. Unfortunately, we did get there around 12 so majority of their baked goods were sold out! Coffee was also exceptionally good. I can't wait yo be back and try other baked goods. Friendly staff and quick service. Worth trying out if you're in the area!

Brown sugar syrup for iced matcha is nice

Still in soft opening mode. Limited menu, no slices yet. Fine. Very sweet service. Big beautiful shop with a great outdoor patio space. I just grabbed a croissant and an iced matcha today. The croissant had good flavor but not quite as flaky as I prefer. I will come back when they are in full service vibe and try the different butters with baguette. I love the butter choices so I'm looking forward to that. It's a very nice space and I think it will be a great local bakery option. So far all good!

Great service and a delicious sandwich. I showed up 20 minutes after they closed. Unfortunately most everything was sold out. Owner offered me a ham and cheese baguette. The quality of the butter and bread was 10/10 Next time I will make sure to show up earlier

Everything is delicious, but my go-to favorites are definitely the cardamom roll and lemon pistachio crescent. If you love cardamom as much as I do, the cardamom roll is a must-try. It has such a distinctive, aromatic flavor and pairs beautifully with a good cup of coffee. The lemon pistachio crescent is equally impressive, with just the right amount of tartness from the lemon balanced by the rich, fragrant, nutty pistachio. So creative and delicious! We're truly blessed and cursed to live on the Westside, surrounded by so many incredible food spots. There's always something amazing to eat, but keeping the weight off is another story! Highly recommend this local gem. Even if there's a long line, it's absolutely worth the wait!

There was a line inside even 30 minutes after they opened on a weekday, with many regulars pre ordering for the next day. I chose a classic croissant and a pain au raisin. I waited until I got home to eat them so that I could cut them in half and have a taste of both. The croissant was so buttery that it didn't need anything with it. I found that heating it a bit in the oven developed the crisp exterior even more... who doesn't love a warm croissant? The pain au raisin had very juicy and very sweet raisins that had a nice depth of flavor (I read on their website that they soak them in rum). It was too sweet for me because of the raisins. The roll itself had the nice layers of the croissant and a good cinnamon flavor. If you are a sweet raisin lover this will make you very happy. I would describe the place as a cross cultural mix of local tastes and classic techniques. (They also sell conchas) I love the philosophy and ethics of the owners buying and sourcing locally while cross training all the employees.

She took me here. The place was very clean and tidy with a lot of different types of sweet treats. I was there for one thing only. I did ask the gal working if they were made that day and she said yes. We ordered a raspberry, an orange, a coffee bean and the popular mango. This was my 2nd time trying these and our hopes were high BUT the raspberry was just awful the filling was strange and it had just raspberry jam inside,I dint eat it. The mango was okay so we shared that. The coffee bean was just awful as well so we didn't finish that either. The orange was the best of the group but overall just a disappointing experience once again because these are not cheap. I'm starting to think I might just have to give up my journey to find these although there are some places in Vegas that look promising. I don't think Reno has any bakeries that make these. They look so beautiful but the taste is a let down.

We were delighted with the box of cookies and tarts that they brought from Paderia in Santa Monica. The chocolate chip walnut cookies were fat and soft with a slightly crisp exterior. The thickness of them allowed a plethora of rich chips to reside inside. I'm not a fan of chunks of nuts in cookies but these were chopped in tiny pieces, so did not take away from the overall soft texture. The soft peanut butter chocolate cookie was also a huge fattie with peanut butter chips within the chocolate cookie. Both were enhanced with a quick warm-up. I loved both of these cookies and think the chocolate chip is the very best you'll ever find. We also had Portuguese egg tarts. The pastel de nata (if I recall, this is what they are called) I ate was small but good, but I have had others that were more to my liking, with a sweeter custard and a more caramelized top, which I guess is a personal preference. Not to say it wasn't delicious - it was! I love the cookies so much I'll be checking out their Irvine location soon, which is much closer to me.

The cookies are also decadent and super reasonably priced compared to some other cookie spots in LA (ask for it warm, especially if it's chocolate chip - the cookie to chocolate ratio is sublime). Chef Yang Soon began developing the reimagined classic Helms Bakery twelve years ago but could not have anticipated the huge changes that were to hit the dining landscape with the Covid pandemic. The decline of going out / dining out, changes in spending habits and the rise of delivery services made this Art Deco styled concept bakery financially unsustainable. Helms has a fascinating history. In 1932 their bread, Olympic Bread, was declared the official bread of the Olympic Games. This led to worldwide recognition. Delivery wagons, or coaches, brought bread, doughnuts and other baked goods to Angelenos' homes with their slogan, "Daily at Your Door."
