Order and pay at the counter and find a table indoors or outside. Both areas are nice, however inside, the noise level is a wee bit louder, however I haven't had any issues having a conversation with a friend. For those with sensitive ears, just sit outside. One can come here for coffee. Free refills! You can ask for a cup ( their cups are glass), but the coffee doesn't stay warm long. If you plan on sitting there and don't mind a paper cup To Go, order your coffee in a To Go cup. Food: each time I have ordered food to eat there, it arrives promptly and presented beautifully. Absolutely beautiful setting. The patio has plenty of seating and cool. The interior is lovely and serene. Orders are taken at the cash register and food is brought out. The quiche was baked perfectly- delicate custard and a beautiful crust. The salad was crisp, fresh, and dressed with a terrific vinaigrette. The tuna sandwich was delicious. The bread had a great chew, good crust. The filling was just the right ratio to bread. Yummy tuna - super flavor. A mini suggestion would be that it seemed to missing a surprise. The only reason for this comment is the sandwich was graced with a pickled carrot. A pickled carrot! Consider tossing some fried capers into the tuna salad. Tartine is located in what looks like a small converted church, but apparently it used to be a mortuary. The setting and the ambience is quaint and unique with both inside and outside seating. It has a small parking lot on-site, otherwise there is street parking nearby. I had high hopes give all the rave reviews and the long line to get in at 8am when they opened, but was a bit disappointed. I ordered a cappuccino and the omelette with soft herbs and sharp cheddar. Perhaps I should have ordered a bakery/bread item given that's what they're known for. The omelette had no flavor and the cheese definitely didn't taste sharp. Something in the herbs also didn't go with the eggs (perhaps tarragon?). The included salad was overdressed and too vinegary for my taste. The cappuccino came out cold and I asked to have it heated up, and they gladly made a new one for me. Also, the loud music blaring at 8am when trying to have a conversation was annoying. Super cute spot for brunch or if you want to grab pastries/coffee. The one bad thing was the parking which they do have a lot next to them but it's paid, of course. We did find free street parking which was nice. The have a ton of both indoor and outdoor seating, shaded and unshaded. The service is fast and efficient. The inside decor is cute but the outside is so stunning and adorable. The restroom is inclusive and the hand washing area is for everyone. They didn't have much pastries left by the time we got there in the early afternoon so we got the pain au chocolat and lemon poppyseed cake and requested both to be warmed up. Such a lovely space for a meal (yes it was a former mortuary, but that makes it even nicer!). Had breakfast here this morning and there was a line even before it opened at 8am. I got a savory scone, artichoke danish, and matcha latte, and everything was very satisfying. The danish was particularly good, with excellent flake and flavor. Fast and friendly service, and plenty of picturesque seating indoors and out. Could do with turning down the music a bit especially with speakers aimed straight at us, but good meal otherwise. The tart is very flaky and easy to eat while the banana cream was light, airy and had real banana chunks in it. It looks small in the photo but is a good sized irl. They also had a coconut cream tart whose looked equally irresistible but I had no room for it unfortunately. Their mocha was really good and out of curiosity asked what chocolate they used for it and they mentioned it is the Valrhona dark chocolate. First time customer for lunch today. What an interesting history this building has. A mortuary/Funeral Parlor with a small church inside for over 75 years before becoming Tartine! That explains the unique design and feel to the restaurant. I thought it was great! Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. It's quite noisy sitting inside. You wait in line to order your food which is later brought to your table. The baked goodies are all lined up in a case as you stand in line tempting you to buy something. They are beautifully presented. I had the Green Goddess Salad and added grilled chicken and avocado. It was very fresh and tasty. It had a bit too much dressing already added on it. I think it would be better to have dressing served on the side. The price for the salad without the add ons is $18.50. After adding the chicken & avocado my salad was $30.50!!! I think that's a bit expensive for a salad. I also bought a croissant to bring home for my husband and I to try. It was very flaky and fresh. Service was great! Our server was Max and he was the nicest guy. I would definitely return for some coffee or tea drink and a pastry to share with my husband but wasn't blown away by their other lunch or breakfast items on the menu. If you're not too hungry or if you're ordering other things like salads, etc, then perhaps one pizza will do. Even my friend who is not a fan of pepperoni pizza agreed that this one was absolutely delicious! DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE: oof, chocolate lovers, you're in for a treat! While I was waiting for my sister who was having a quick procedure at UCLA Santa Monica, I needed my essential pick me up...COFFEE! I found his on yelp and it was in walking distance so I headed over. Yes, it may resemble a Church...but in actuality, it was formally a "mortuary!" I was wondering why I could feel the energy of past lives here...but that's a story for another day:). The owners are Elisabeth Prueitt and her husband, renowned baker Chad Robertson. It is a historic landmark in Santa Monica. It is now a full service bakery & restaurant and the line was out the door! It does move fast though... I was in Coffee and Bakery Lover HEAVEN! The interior was beautiful. High ceilings, plenty of tables and the cases were filled with mouth watering items! I was overwhelmed! I had a hard time picking something but I went with a classic scone & my extra hot latte with an add shot, OFC:) It was the perfect combination! The outdoor patio was lovely. Most of us would interpret. That is a good sign. Tartine is a well established name in the world of sourdough breads. In this location, they had dine in options, and choices of many different items. Staff was very friendly. Decor is casual. I had the vegetable quiche, and later had a coconut cream tart. There was a side salad with the quiche. I had house coffee. I also ordered a loaf of bread as carryout and I can't comment on it yet because I'm still full from breakfast. The interior of the quiche had a nice flavor and texture. While I did have to use a map to walk to it, I actually was able to follow the buttery scent of freshly baked croissants to this lovely place. It's a very pretty spot with a nice shaded outside seating area. It's charming inside and you can see the croissants and pastries being made. I wasn't too big of a fan of my croissant I got. Maybe I waited too long but it was rather dry. I think this was the best iced espresso I've had in my life. This is a smooth, velvety espresso with no bitter acidity. I was going to be in the area for another experience and figured I'd look up some well rated places for brunch. The exterior of Tartine was quaint so I decided I would give them a shot. Tartine has a lovely covered outside eating area and the interior of the restaurant is quite nice. Outside of that I have to say that my expereince was middling, at best. Tartine is a general counter service restaurant which I do enjoy however for the prices they are charging I would expect a more personal touch to service. When we got to the counter the cashier was polite but outside of our interaction with her there was no real interaction with any of the other employees. Even when our food came the server was brusque and started setting the food down before asking either my friend or myself who ordered which plates. I dont necessarily mind quick and prompt service but there's a difference between efficency in communication and just sloppy serving. I figured at least the $17 Omelette would be qutie good. I was mistaken. I've honestly had a better omelette at Waffle House. The white cheddar completely overpowered all the other flavors in the omelette. There's no real reason to add herbs to an omelette if the cheddar is just going to drown out everything else. Especially since Eggs have a soft flavor themselves it mostly tasted like I was eating just cheese. Additionally, the Omelette was over cooked. I'd wager by at least a minute. There was little moisuture still within the eggs but it was ok. Just not worth $17 at all. To accompany the Omelette the dish came with dressed spring mix lettuce and some bread. The bread was fairly decent and probably the best part of the dish. I also ordered a side of bacon which is 2 slices, cooked perfectly in my opionion. However that did cost almost $5 which, just... why so much? I did not try their pastries but I will say they looked good at least on display. The circumsied ecalir was particularly funny to see. When you see it, you'll understand. Overall, Tartine is a quaint place to enjoy a meal but unfortunately the meal's do not live up to the cost. read more

Went back to Tartine to try their new dinner menu for a birthday celebration and it was the perfect night! They easily accommodated a group of 10 people and the reservation on Resy was simple. The servers were very friendly and attentive - refilling waters and checking in throughout the meal. The food was delicious as well! I tried the warm country bread & butter, the burrata (my favorite!!), and the fig & pig pizza. Everything was very good and reasonably priced for a casual but classy meal. I loved the ambiance in the evening too - it's already such a cute spot but they had dim lights and relaxing music and candles, creating an intimate vibe. Parking was easy in Santa Monica (free street parking after 6), but there's also a lot. Because it was a birthday celebration, they allowed us to purchase a full cake from them for $99 which had about 13 HUGE slices! They also gave us a special birthday pastry as well.
