So happy to have found this special place after our visit to Museo Reina Sofia. Delicious homemade food in the quaintest setting. They have a menu of the day, with a meat/vegetarian option. Service was great, and we left full and happy! One of my favorite dining experiences in my travels to date!

A charming cafe! I was looking for a restaurant to dine at after visiting the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. It's just a 5 minute walk. Matilda is a very small cafe so we came at a time when some seats were available. The menu was prix fixe including a starter, entree, dessert, beer or wine, and coffee/tea. There's one server for the whole establishment. Everything I ate was excellent. I enjoyed seeing all the postcards that decorated the walls. I would recommend dining here and it's a great memory I have from my visit to Madrid.

Truth be told, I came looking for another restaurant. It was closed so I found Matilda by chance. I enjoyed a light and delicious breakfast with great decor/vibes. If you wake up late, like I did, it's okay because there menu is served all day.

Super cozy little spot near Caixaforum and the big 3 art museums! The lunch menu del dia is great for 12 euros (3 courses & drink). Note that lunch service starts at 1:15pm even though they are open earlier for breakfast/coffee. The server I had was friendly and warm. He spoke Spanish, English, French and Italian to guests! He asked if I could understand Spanish or if I prefer English. Seems like a small thing, but I really enjoy practicing Spanish and am always a bit disheartened when people here immediately switch to English so it was nice! There's no physical menu written anywhere except outside, so he just lists all the offerings and you can choose. The food is very simple and home style with typical dishes from different parts of Spain. I had stuffed red peppers with cream cheese and tuna, typical of Navarra. For the main, I had "patatas con chorizo" which was backsliding mashed potato with sausage mixed in. The apple cake I had for dessert was so tasty - moist, not too sweet, real apple bits. It's pretty much like having a Spanish auntie or uncle cooking for you. Do not expect anything fancy or big portions, and you'll enjoy it. The drink included in the set lunch can be wine, beer, pop, juice, water, coffee, or tea. Service is leisurely but efficient. I was in and out in an hour. It's a good place if you want to sit down but don't want to get stuck in a super slow drawn out lunch (which sometimes happens in Spain...).

My friend really liked this place the last time she went since this place has really authentic Spanish food and a rotating seasonal menu so she brought me here. She wanted to get some bean soup but apparently it's a winter menu thing. The ham we got was SO salty. Not sure if this is how it is traditionally supposed to be cooked, but it was so salty you could literally crunch on the salt rocks. It was the most disgusting ham I have ever eaten. Everything else was only okay. The pear juice though was really good. The tangerine juice just tasted like orange juice. They have cute decor on the inside with postcards from all over.

    The street Matilda is on.

My wife and I love finding small, welcoming local restaurants where we feel at home anywhere in the world and Matilda's tops the list! The food was outstanding, atmosphere intimate and homey and it was a perfect way to start our third day of discovering Madrid. Breakfast here was like a warm hug.

A cute breakfast spot for locals and tourists. The seating is small but people dont stay too long. The iced Americano was really good.

Adorable, cozy cafe. Fresh, homemade food. Very vegan friendly and well priced. €12.50 for appetizer, entree, desert, wine or beer, and coffee. Close to the museums (especially Reina Sophia). Had the menu del dia and chose a melon & tomato gazpacho, cous cous with veggies, and fresh local cherries. All delicious. This was the only place I went with my omnivore family (lots of non-vegan options) that had multiple, substantial vegan options that allowed me to get a taste of the local cuisine and ingredients.

The daily menu - 1= starter, 2 = mains.  Note the bottom where it says "2 plates + dessert + drink + coffee for €12"

Perfect spot if your looking for a break from the typical "meat+cheese+bread" Spanish lunch but still want to feel the warmth and quality of what Spain has to offer (and dine in a local's spot). There is a daily menu written on a chalk board and you can do a starter + main for a set price that includes a drink (including beer or wine) and dessert and coffee (€12 as of this writing) or a 1/2 lunch (just starter OR main with all the other items) for €9. The vibe is super comfortable, but it is small and fills up around 2 pm. The waiter was great, and offered suggestions in both English and Spanish. The bread they serve is baked in a wood-fired oven and is definitely the BEST bread we had in Spain and the only bread I have had in Spain that would hold a candle to a typical French or Italian bread. Food portions and quality was just right, and gave us a welcome respite from the overly heavy food we've been eating all week! I had the tomato and cheese salad to start and the Tortilla de patata as my main, my wife had the braised chicken which was incredibly flavorful, and others enjoyed the "Ensalada Matilda" which was a light salad of greens with tomato and various seeds sprinkled on top. An easy 10 minute walk from the Prado that gets you away from the over-priced places in that neighborhood. HIGHLY recommended!

Salad with sesame, tomatoes, and sun flower seeds!!!

So glad that we found it because the everything was amazing. A small coffee & dessert shop that's very unique with an urban but home-like feeling. The owner was there to open and speaks English so that really made it comfortable for us to select what to eat. She gave us her recommendations on what to try being that you couldn't visually see what was inside most of the pastry items and the menu was in Spanish. I assume that it isn't a dog friendly venue...one of the patrons sat their dog outside while they enjoyed coffee. Their selections of pastries are endless; From cakes, to donuts, tarts, quiches, meat pies, meat empanadas, etc. I'm sad that I didn't try any of the sweets, but I did order the smoked salmon & queso cream cheese sandwhich, along with their puff pastry of spinach (my favorite) & beef & chicken empanadas. Light & small but shareable as my girlfriend and I enjoyed every last bite & toasted with a cup of coffee!
