I've been coming to 600 Main for years and it never disappoints. First the food, freshly made, real home cooking with the most delicious options. I've never eaten anything here that was bad. They put a refreshing and delicious spin on somewhat boring tea sandwiches, soups and salads. Second the decor, like walking into the Victorian era. Beautifully decorated, with eclectic sets of china, each one different and beautiful in its own way. Lastly but most importantly, the tea. Always a new tea option to try and it's always delicious. Every time I go I have to buy a bag (or two) of my favorite teas. Delicious food, personable and friendly staff and a beautiful home to enjoy it in. We loved our stay here! All of the inn attendants were very welcoming and Vicki, the innkeeper, was sure to make sure that we had everything that we needed. The breakfast was delicious and the rooms were unique and comfortable. Vicki also has a super cute "garden center" with a large selection of flowers for purchase and a little farm stand with fresh veggies and baked goods. This was supposed to be a special birthday tea for my aunt who is very ill; what a disappointment! Our tea was cold, the service was excruciatingly slow, and our waitress rude. It was overpriced and lacked the sophistication, quality in service and food a high tea experience should have. It was not at all what was advertised, don't waste your time or money. read more

My daughter, aunt, cousin, and I thoroughly enjoyed the loveliest holiday afternoon (and afternoon tea!) at Mathis House! We have been to many teas in our tristate area and abroad, and this is one of our favorite spots! Everything was perfect, from the food to the atmosphere and the service. We've been there before, during the summer months, and loved that experience as well. But this time was even more special! The holiday decor, themed teas, and seasonally tweaked menu were all such a treat! This place is seriously incredible. When we first pulled up to the driveway, we had no idea what we were in for but it was such a treat. We entered the building and were greeted immediately and seated. We had no idea they even served food or drinks here! Since we went during an event that they were hosting, we were actually given complimentary tea kettles each. First, the waitress came over with an antique looking selection of tea glasses for each of us to choose from. We could each choose our favorite designed tea glass which was awesome! I chose the matcha gunpowder tea and my mom chose the china jasmine tea. Both were delicious and the tea kettles were filled to the brim and huge! Eventually as we were drinking our tea and browsing through the holiday selections of goods, the owner came over and introduced herself. She was extremely hospitable and kind and awesome! We were also treated to some delicious freshly cooked desserts. We purchased home made scones as well which were to die for. My mom took me here for my birthday and I was pleasantly surprised to walk into a vintage tea house (I've never been to one before). Our waitress was kind and you can tell that the staff are there because they are passionate about preserving this type of dining experience. The finger foods were yummy (especially the cucumber sandwiches). The personal selection of tea cups and beautiful tea kettles were thoughtful and a beautiful appearance for fantastic flavored teas. What an amazing way to celebrate my baby shower at this place. I was able to be under a tent with my family in a safe setting and they decorated it with little knickknacks all over. Our server Janet was personable and explained the entire proper tea process. We were served the peach tea as well as the strawberry and cream tea, both delicious! They have an extensive menu of choices, I will be going back to try the others! Then we had a yummy summer salad and offered 2 of their homemade soups (broccoli and cheese was thick and authentic as if you got to try the family secret), followed by the proper tea platter of lunch. Not going to lie, was a little skeptical of cumcumber scallion on bread but I was proven wrong today! Super refreshing and tasty! They also gave turkey/cheese/apple, egg salad, roast beef/sautéed onion/cheese and a goat cheese phyllo dough deal that hit the spot. By the way, these were all offered on the first plate on the trio tier platter in the middle of our tables!!!! The second plate had handmade scones and clotted cream, never had either but super happy I had them today because they changed my view forever and will come back for them also! Followed by the top and final tier of desserts, and the cheesecake was the bomb! I would've loved to eaten the others but I was stuffed, super thankful I was given to go containers to enjoy later this weekend. Special shoutout to the owner coming out and introducing herself and running such an exceptional place. The live music was a calming touch and the farmers market in the back had cute seasonal decorations, scones to go, and some of the biggest produce ever. My wife wife and I stayed here for 3 nights over the 4th of July weekend, and we wish we could have stayed for another week. The house is beautiful, the food is spectacular, and the location is perfect. However, the true charm of this place is the manager, Vikki. We left having new friend for life. Ok, where do I begin? My husband made reservations to surprise me with a tea service here today for Valentine's Day. He was asked if there were any specific special dietary requests, he told them no pork products of ANY kind, so what did they do, in the selection of sandwiches, they put on toasted HAM and cheese. Ok, that aside, the desserts served with tea sandwiches were stale. The macaroons they had on the plate were so old, that my front teeth hurt trying to bite down on them, and I left it on the plate with teeth marks in the cookie part, I wasn't going to try to bite through and chew and swallow that. The meringue which looked pretty, was too dried out and they put in too much vanilla extract. They had an interesting selection of teas and we each got a teapot of our own, wrapped in a tea cozy. Problem is that the tea was initially wonderfully hot, after the 3rd cup, it started getting cold and was basically lukewarm. (Here is a tip, you ought to keep boiling hot water in the teapots to warm the ceramic all the way through before you dump that out to serve the piping hot tea inside it. The tea cozy along is NOT enough). He had requested a quiet spot for us, but it's as if we were seated in the butlers pantry with the servers coming and going, taking utensils and tea cups from the cupboards making a racket. And for gods sake, please get that piano tuned!! Hearing QUEEN, "We are the Champions" on an out of tune piano accompanied by a violin was not what either of us had in mind. After exchanging a look with my husband, I said to him jokingly, "...do you think they take requests and will play Bohemian Rhapsody?" I don't know if they heard me or it was coincidence, but that was the next song on the woeful out of tune piano. The soup had only 2 choices (though the menu had offered other selections) and the choice of cream of asparagus or broccoli and cheese were my only options. I chose the broccoli, but it was too salty. Onto the different teacups and utensil settings on the table. I know the were going for a Victorian look with different patterns, but it just looked cluttered. The utensils were silver-plate, the tarnished look on what ought to have been polished had me shaking my head. The Victorian era was all about etiquette and especially setting a proper table. All these things distracted from it. Finally, we got up to leave. I didn't know it, but my husband had already prepaid for our afternoon tea service earlier in the week when he made reservations. He still left them a nice cash tip despite the not so great food and lack of attention to detail. We walked out to our car and our server followed us and said that we had not paid our bill. My husband was at this point really annoyed. He told the server that it had been put on his card and he wasn't paying a second time. Then the owner comes out and says, nope that they have no record of him paying. After a few minutes of looking through, they finally find that my husband DID pay. At $39/person plus tip, this was a shameful way to treat customers. My husband ought to actually get a refund due to lack of understanding how to treat customers. If you are asking about dietary restrictions, you ought to ACTUALLY PAY ATTENTION and follow up with it. If a patron prepaid before even entering your establishment, a special notation ought to be put next to the name of the person who RSVP'd to keep from embarrassing your customer. We've been married a long time and I know if my husband paid or not, but what if this was a date for someone? Is it right to embarrass someone like this? Piss poor business management skills on your part. Not worth the time, gas/tolls and money spent on the afternoon "tea service". It's a shame. read more

We had my baby shower at 600 Main today and it was beautiful! I was so happy with how everything turned out, it was exactly how I imagined my shower. The house was set up beautifully and the food was delicious! The staff was amazing and helpful throughout the entire day! Wow this place is an amazing tea house! I wasn't able to stay here for the night but their tea house is amazing! Be prepared to be full after you're there but it's just an amazing experience! Their menu changes daily and they give you soup, salad, scone with clotted cream and lemon curd, and a large selection of finger sandwiches and mini desserts. The interior of the place will take you back to the late 1800's with its own Victorian charm. If you're looking for a relaxing girls day out or even with your family, I highly recommend going here. I had the best experience here today. It was conveniently located on Main Street Toms River with great parking. It is an old style Victorian house. They have afternoon tea Thurs-Sat from 12-4. They do private parties on Sunday's. They are also a bed and breakfast with about 5 olden style beautiful rooms. Everyone here was super friendly and welcoming! Kim was our waitress and she was awesome. The afternoon tea is a set menu for $25 a person not including tax and gratuity. That is a great deal! The place settings were super cute (sample I have posted). The food here was so delicious. First course: garlic tomato basil soup, served in a little tea cup. It was amazing. Second course: vegetable frittata over spring greens. This was sooo fresh and perfectly cooked. Third course: mixed berry scone fresh out of the oven (the best one I have ever had) with home made clotted cream...."yum!" Fourth course: they brought out the silver tier with the savory on the bottom which was cucumber finger sandwhiches, tuna crostini, Brie and jam tart, and artichoke and lemon crostini. For the dessert it was mini cheesecakes, tuxedo cupcakes, macadamia cookies, peppermint bark, and lemon blueberry cake. For the tea: we had a classic English breakfast, and then a nice chocolate tea. (You get two pots) Everything here was wonderful and everything I could have hoped for in an afternoon tea. I can not wait to go back here! My first time having tea and lunch and this very enchanting old Victorian home . You can feel the history as soon as you walk in .. literally I had goose bumps. I enjoyed a few teas (tranquillity and dirty chai) both were very pleasing to the pallet. Lunch was scrumptious finger sandwiches. EVERYTHING is made ON-SITE. DELICIOUS! I toured the rooms upstairs as it is a bed and breakfast. Clean and tastefully done . I would definitely come again and possibly stay the night even though I only live a few towns away , that's how much I enjoyed the food and vibe of the home. I had a wonderful experience at 600 Main. I held my friends bridal shower here and it was so beautiful, completely organized, and our server Kim couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. I didn't deal with booking the place and had no idea what to expect when I arrived, but it was so quaint and beautifully decorated. The bridesmaids had all brought extra decorations and we were able to decorate as much as we wanted to make it extra special for the bride. The food was really good. Everything was homemade and there was a lot of it! Everyone definitely left full and I think pretty much everything was gone because it was so good. The homemade scone was definitely the highlight for me. It was served warm and was so delicious! Staying here was a real treat. I spent 3 relaxing nights at the inn. I was in Toms River last week on business from CT. I found 600 Main B&B solely because other hotels in area were booked with vacationers. Host Vicki was absolutely awesome! As I returned from my day in the field, she welcomed me with wonderful snack treats as I unwound on the massive front porch enjoying cold beverages. Breakfast was really-really good too! As a guy travelling alone B&B's are not really my thing to seek out, and the decor is definitely Victorian, but in no means pretentious. I really had a fun time, compared to ordinary Double Trees and such. There are a lot of very interesting collectibles, artwork, hats, and other decorations. The room and bed were quite comfortable and restful, although the shower curtain placement in Genevieve took some doing to keep floor from getting wet - no biggie. Other nice things were meeting the different other guests and chatting on the porch. Also, a nice bar-and-grill that has a very extensive menu is a 5-block walk from inn. For a unique and interesting change from the normal hotel, whether for business or pleasure, I highly recommend 600 Main in Toms River. Give it a try, you'll like it. read more

Last night my daughter and I spent the night at this magnificent Bed and Breakfast. It was a wonderful time to spend quality time together in this historic and beautifully decorated home. Vicki and Ron certainly make you feel right as if your in the comfort of your own home. The Bed and Breakfast was immaculate and absolutely charming with one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in. The breakfast was scrumptious and theres a little something for everyone in the quaint gift shop. We were so happy to hear that Vicki and Ron are expanding the events being held at the B&B and creating a diverse and delectable menu. We recently had a wonderful two night stay at the Mathis House. We were in the area for a special intimate occasion, which happened to fall during the COVID-19 pandemic. The inn is absolutely beautiful. The staff including owner, Vicki, were gracious, helpful, and non-intruding. Our rooms were lovely; and the staff took special care for cleanliness and safety throughout the inn. Mathis House served us wonderful breakfasts which were included as part of the room packages. We also arranged for two specially prepared dinners, both of which were fabulous. (We chose to have dinner at the inn for the safety of our party.) The chef, on one night, even played a special piano tune for us to cap off our celebration dinner. We especially enjoyed spending some of our free time on their lovely front porch; and we purchased some beautiful flowers from their mini-market garden behind the inn prior to our return home. read more

Just had a baby shower for my daughter at 600 Main Tea Room. I've had nothing but rave reviews from all of our 38 guests. Many of whom are planning a return visit soon. The house is so beautifully decorated. I thought that the layout might be awkward for 40 people but it worked out just fine. All of the food was delicious from the soup to the dessert. So many teas to choose from and they're all fantastic. I can't say enough about the staff! Everyone was so helpful and so kind. I had a wonderfully relaxing time at 600 Main. I was joined by family and friends for afternoon tea on Wednesday. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. the service was excellent. I reality loved all the China and other Victorian era antiques artfully arranged throughout each room. Even the restroom was pretty! They have an extensive tea selection, over one hundred to chose from! The meal included a pot of tea, fruit salad, a cup of chicken soup, berry scones, a tasty variety of sandwiches and yummy sweet deserts. The cost is $35 and includes tax and tip. Gluten free is available for an extra $4 but you must let them know of all dietary restrictions when you make your reservation. Bring CASH, credit cards are not accepted. read more

Brilliant! One of the most amazing high tea services I've ever enjoyed. The mansion's decor is stunning, and the food was amazing. Some traditional fare combined with unique chef's creations. After trying a couple of tea blends, I bought some of their loose tea. Can't wait to try them at home. I also hope to return someday and stay in the B&B. Was here with my tea friends in January, and again with family in February '14. 9/8/14 - Found 600 Main online, looking for a venue to host my daughter's bridal shower, and loved the idea of a Victorian High Tea. We could not have hoped for better! The warm hospitality, excellent service, food, presentation, decor, Victorian charm everywhere you look - there is nothing not to love! My sister and I stayed overnight in Countess Stephanie and Lady Samantha bedrooms, awoke and enjoyed a fresh fruit salad, homemade biscotti, baked apple French toast, juice and coffee, and had little to do but relax until the guests arrived.
