We come every year for Easter. The food is pretty good for a buffet. It has a great variety of items. The salad selection is always fresh and delicious. The dessert table is so good. We've been going to the Breakers restaurant every Sunday for years. I generally enjoy the view and the fact that the dining room is never crowded. This year my wife and I decided to attend the Easter Sunday Buffet. The variety and quality of the food was good. What ruined the whole experience was the 20% gratuity tacked onto the bill. I have never heard of a 20% gratuity on a buffet for a table of two. As other reviewers note, the decor and the carpet which needs to be changed can be overlooked. However the greed cannot be overlooked. There are other fine restaurants that deserve my patronage. read more

Hosted our 50th wedding anniversary yesterday for 45 family and friends . Booked the facility in January. Gina was absolutely delightful, attentive to our needs combined with excellent follow up. The florist she recommended made beautiful table arrangements. Yesterday was a spectacular weather day. Our room overlooked the heated pool and we also had unobstructed views of the ocean. The food variety was delicious and we got rave reviews from our guests. They even made sure they had finger food for our younger guests. The wait staff paid attention to every detail and made sure all our guests were given VIP treatment. The front patio was a phenomenal setting for all our photographic needs. Even our photographer was blown away by the setting. The fantastic staff made sure we had take away servings to enjoy today which we did. Cannot say enough about every aspect of the day because it exceeded my expectations by a mile. Thank you to all at Breakers for making this a memorable occasion for all of us. read more

Note: this is for the restaurant portion of The Breakers. Talk about past Glory Days - this old relic should be put out of its misery. I can overlook the dated decor and worn carpeting. What I can't overlook is the sub par food and substandard (although polite and enthusiastic) service. Mr. MW Bethens and I had lunch here recently, along with two friends. The pizza tasted like it was from the frozen aisle of the local Shop Rite, and while the kitchen staff was there, they picked up salad dressing as well. The four paninis that we ordered were undercooked and lackluster. And who serves cole slaw (in plastic cups) with a panini? Barf. Dessert was a miserly scoop of ice cream, clearly some store brand, with Redi-Whip on the side. Grade: D, if I'm being generous. Service: Plates were whisked away mid-bite, even with food still on them and the server could not recall who ordered what, seemed very confused. Maybe this was his first day? Grade: C Don't go here, save your money. The only good thing about this place is the view from the veranda. This place may have been good in the 90s; too bad it's 2025. read more

While in New Jersey I celebrated the New Year with dinner and some good friends at The Breakers On the Ocean located 1507 Ocean Avenue in Spring Lake just steps from the ocean. The Breakers is an iconic and historic location that is a restaurant and hotel that offers special occasions like a wedding or a corporate meeting and retreat. It is a beautiful structure widely recognized as a preferred bridal venue. It was a windy and rainy New Year's Eve and the views from the restaurant are quite memorable. Tonight I had the House Salad and the Chicken Parmesan with Fettuccine which was a large portion and quite good. Ownership (Scardino family) stopped by to say hello and our server was friendly and efficient. My dining partners had the Pepper Salad, as well as the colored Fusilli and the Ravioli which really looked fantastic. All were happy with their choices! The room was filled with regulars and locals and the choice of menu is quite extensive. The atmosphere is festive and the interior is well maintained as this is a luxury venue in every way. I probably should have ordered a seafood dish, but my selection was fine as I usually order the specials. The Breakers is a no-brainer in terms of the atmosphere, locale and quality of service. The negative reviews surprise me. My husband and I just returned from a wonderful week here. The room was attractive, comfy and impeccably clean, the desk staff always obliging, and Larry the Maitre D friendly and helpful. We enjoyed dinners in the dining room, breakfast on the enclosed veranda, cocktails in the bar, sitting on the large wrap around porch, and poolside service. The location couldn't be better. There was a wedding and a bridal shower one of the days, but we didn't feel cramped. Bravo to the owners for running such a top notch hotel. We'll be back! ( Also, it's nice to see that the guests all dress well for dinner in the formal dining room. There was a Yelp complaint about not having coffee machines in the rooms, but you can walk to the veranda for coffee between six and nine am and take it to the porch or to your room. Stayed there twice for two weddings in the Past 4 months. A show place at one time I suppose, suffers from lack of upkeep and general maintenance. Lacks the amenities of say a Hampton Inn. Doesn't provide coffee machine, frig, microwave, etc. in rooms. With the exception of one wonderful lady at the front desk, everyone else was brusque or unhelpful. Checking I and out was awful. There was no bellman available to help with luggage and after a long wait they refused to allow us to use one of their luggage trolleys. The prices reflect a 1st Class resort. - the management and facility do not. read more

The roll was the size of a saucer while the bready crab cake was the size of a silver dollar! It looked lost sitting on the roll. BTW none of my friends were happy with their meals. We Had the Petite room. Which was larger than the other expected. The location is great. Across the street from the beach. The hotel has a pool. See pic of me in it. So on a nice sunny day you have to make tough decisions ... pool or beach! Martini or cosmo? Do both!!! The hotel lends you a beach pass. No coolers at the beach though. The restaurant has amazing food for breakfast, lunch n dinner plus Porch side drinks n aps which are amazing. As you spend a lovely time sipping cosmo in the porch, You can eavesdrop on prospective brides researching wedding venues. Hotel reservations are hard to get. We shopped around for a place to hold on lunch for about 30 to 40 people. This place was not even on the radar expecting it to be outrageously priced right along the ocean in Spring Lake. However it was exactly the opposite of what we expected, the prices were incredibly fair and the food and service was absolutely amazing! Take a look at the pictures of the room, incredible! Plus a view of the ocean! The food was five stars and I'm talking about buffet style! Everyone went on and on about how incredible the day was! The chicken franchise, the poached salmon, the pasta, even the bread, it was all top-notch! I would recommend their pasta with vodka sauce however. As far as the buffet was concerned they kept bringing out more and more food never even hinting at stopping! Cooked to perfection!! This place is only for those who want to spend zero time in their room and want to be across from the beach. There is zero customer service. The hotel is dated and rooms are extremely small. See photo below of king ocean room with pullout bed. That is the size of the room and there is zero privacy with an extremely small bathroom with a dated pocket door that basically opens into the bed. Only go here if you have friends in the area and know local restaurants. The whole place needs to be gutted. There are maybe a few small fixes to make it more bearable. Such as, better furniture out on porch, maybe some music playing out there, water bottles for the rooms, some bikes to bike to beach pavilion or town. Get rid of the weird smoking section on the porch. Zero ambiance. Please note that you need to ask for beach badges as they will not offer this information (odd), parking overnight must be on beach side. Also, you need to walk to the beach in front of pavilion if you have kids as that is where the food is. We never went to pool but note that there were zero kids and lots of older people. It looked boring. We never ate at hotel as it did not look good. Plenty of great places around but research before going. I recommend only going if you do not have 4/5 star resort expectations. read more

Very dissatisfied with the policies of this hotel. I made a last-minute decision in June to visit the Breakers for the first time and rented one room for a Sunday through Wednesday. We had an unexpected death in the family making it impossible for me to make the trip. All of this happened within 2 weeks time and yet The Breakers refused to issue any sort of refund. Had they issued a refund and taken the room back, I'm sure they would have been able to rent it given that it was the week of July 4th. Instead the room sat empty! Poor policy, no compassion, no goodwill, no way to treat your customers. Terrible first impression! read more

My friend and I just got back from our first annual girls trip at this location. I have nothing but amazing things to say about the hotel and the staff. The restaurant within the hotel was incredible. Each staff member was nicer than the next! The dining room features great water views. The lobby is beautifully decorated. They offer free street parking and beach passes. Please note that it can be a little difficult to get a lounge chair around the pool as people start reserving their spots before 8am. We were having the best time and didn't want to leave. Can't wait to go back next summer! read more

Friends wanted to get together and suggested this place. We went thinking they can not screw up eggs. Wrong. My swiss cheese omelet came out so overcooked that it would be able to stand vertically. Breakfast potatoes had a bitter taste Maybe it was powered garlic. I sent it back. It was remade better, but now it was somewhat undercooked. My wife had eggs over easy with Canadian bacon-- came out cold. Pretty stupid , don't you think? Several friends had scrambled eggs that were just over cooked. Staff was nice. We stayed at this hotel at $450 per night for a family wedding that was beautiful, however 40 minutes before check out, housekeeping entered our room. It was a blatant invasion of privacy. Our belongings were moved, we were basically kicked out of our room. When we spoke to the front desk on the phone after the fact, we were told that "management is looking into it" - this is on a Saturday - we were told they might get back to us by Monday. For the price you're paying for a room, you should at least expect to be treated like a decent person. I'm completely offended by all of this, and will never step foot in the place again. read more

Review for Hotel Stay (April) This hotel is outdated, especially for the price tag. To book a hotel room you have to mail a check to the venue. Upon arriving, I was surprised to see there was only street parking and overnight guests had to park on Ocean Avenue facing the beach. It seems odd that there was not a dedicated lot for overnight guests. The lobby is also extremely small. I booked a double queen room and I was impressed with the size of the room itself. There was even a small table and two chairs to sit at. The room only had one medium sized mirror and only 3 outlets plugs. This made getting ready a little difficult, but not impossible. Additionally, the front door only had a standard lock, no deadbolts or safety locks. Overall the hotel was just okay, I would not go out of my way to recommend staying at the Breakers. read more

we recently needed to host a repass luncheon for our mom. It was a very emotional and stressful time. We tried a few area restaurants, with no luck. Came here for lunch (4) on a cool fall Sunday afternoon . Got seated right away at front window overlooking ocean. Table was set nicely. Atmosphere is sophisticated and clean. We ordered drinks which were all very good, a white pizza for appetizer which was surprisingly tasty and good. For entrees we all had crab cake sandwiches served with a delicious remoulade, sweet potato fries or regular fries, lettuce, tomato and pickle. Crab cake was actually one of the best I've had around. Cappuccinos and Tartufo for dessert made for a perfect ending to a nice lunch. Server and busboys were quick and efficient. Filled water twice. Portions were adequate and prices were average. This is a 3 star hotel with a 5 star tub and a 5 star view. We stayed 2 nights for a wedding Oct 15. We couldn't get the room we wanted both nights, so we spent the first night in the Ocean Front King and the 2nd night in the Luxury Superior. The website is very thorough and explains which rooms have tubs and if there are ocean views, side views, or no view at all. We had ocean view in both rooms, and a nice whirlpool tub in both, but the tub in the Luxury Superior was enormous with a frosted window above letting in the sunshine. The building is 100 years but the bathrooms, showers, and tubs are renovated and updated. The furniture in the rooms and rugs throughout the hotel are very old and outdated. It felt like I was at Grandma's house. Everything was clean and spotless, and the beds and sheets were fluffy and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and made it easy to switch rooms. We just left our luggage by the door and they brought everything over when the new room was ready. They also allowed us to check out at noon which gave me time to fit in that last bath. There was also a gas fireplace with a timer in the 2nd room. I managed to get in 5 baths in 3 days, and spend a lot of time looking at the ocean. We also walked the boardwalk to Belmar and visited the Sea Girt Lighthouse. read more

Disappointed ! Hotel is very dated, although some may find that charming. The hotel facade with its wrap around porch nestled across the beach in charming neighborhood of spring lake might lead one's thoughts to yesteryear; however, at $ upwards of 500.00 I would expect the room to reflect 2023! We were booked at this facility, however when we arrived the very rude clerks Dana and Morgan advised we had no reservation ( we sent our check in months ahead of time and they received our money). When we arrived they were rude and disrespectful to me and my family in front of other hotel guests!. There was a much better approach -they could have at least provided us our money back or provided us with accommodations. They did neither. This was extremely unprofessional and rude. What a gem! This business is family owned and has been for over 30 years. The food is top notch and the lodging is absolutely beautiful. My room afforded me a look of the full moon rising over the horizon line with the waves breaking in front. Crack the window open a bit and fall asleep to the sound of the waves breaking on the beach. Those seem sounds will greet you in the morning when you wake up. Such a special place. I must also give a shout out to Tyler at the front desk. He did an amazing job making sure all of my annoying needs were met :-) you know, the ones where you want to change rooms and you want everything just perfect. I could not be anymore clear and honest when I say this was the worst place I have ever been to for an event. Staff and customer service was extremely poor and judgmental. They asked us after we handed in our deposit if we could leave at 10 instead of 11pm and when we agreed they did not give us our money back (we paid full price that money did not go to servers). Upon that, the servers and staff were giving us nasty looks all night and then at 10 cut our music and told us to "get out thanks". None of us were being rude or loud or disrespectful and we tipped well. They also did not mention when the buffet was open or when dessert was out. The bar tenders over poured and nobody ID'd anybody. When people wanted to take pictures they yelled at them and told them to get out. So yeah I would not if I were you. read more

We stopped for what we thought would be an elegant poolside lunch here this afternoon. Sadly, we were disappointed. I asked for a very dry martini on the rocks with olives I received a yellow martini with no ice. The server offered to bring me a cup of ice as a correction! Lunch was served without utensils and without condiments. I asked for a sausage sandwich but it was served cold. The manager asked if I wanted something else but I am careful not to eat food at a restaurant where I have already made mention of their shortcomings! Ambiance/Decor/Atmosphere: Downstairs is quite the attractive fall-laden grand parlor with comfortable couches and chairs to sit in. The lobby is similar in decor, but once you reach the eating area you will be seated in a service hallway either facing the beach or pool. The large party room is saved for large parties obviously. Noise/sound level: Medium leveled but not overly loud distracting patrons from their meal. Even with a large party in the large party room the sound is not an issue. Menu: Similar in essence to a diner, but not sized as such. It's like the best diner dishes were selected and the rest was scrapped. Service: Warm and friendly, happy to have you as guests but kind of apathetic to a degree of why am I doing this daily type of service. Food: The food is fine, similar to a diner, and to that extent if you expect more than diner food you're in the wrong restaurant, or even wrong town for that matter. The only reason why people are eating at Breakers is because you're staying here or it's convenient at the moment. As such, the food quality was fine. Nice rye toast, tasty home made home fries, and acceptable eggs and bacon. Bar: Full Price: Pretty high but you're in Spring Lake so everything will be much more expensive than you're used to. Overall: If you come to Breakers looking for five star fancy dining you're in the wrong place, state, time, reality, and planet. This is convenient diner like food near the beach that has quiet and clean bathrooms to use in case of emergency. We visit Spring Lake yearly and go to Breakers all the time. Restaurant is great. Wish I could say the same for the hotel aspects. Dirty carpet, smell of old food, ancient, worn furniture and curtains greeted us. The rooms don't even have water. Staff is nice but lax on customer service. At the prices charged, this should be at least 4 star. Seems like they're content to let this place just deteriorate. Sad. The location is incomparable but not to live in what ultimately amounts to-a low level dirty motel. The two rating is only because of location. read more
