Location! Location! Location! The Mayfair Hotel is literally right on the beach! They offer $1 bottles of water and free keurig coffee! That's all the nice things I have to say about this 0 star hotel. If it was one block off the beach, it would have closed years ago. This is THE WORST hotel I've ever stayed in, and I once spent a night at the Hotel Carter in NYC the same night a hooker was murdered and found dismembered in a garbage bag. If you must stay here for whatever sick reason (self hate? desire to torture yourself?) DO NOT stay in a double bed room. However big your party is, stay in a room with a single bed. The room I stayed in with my family had two beds, but one of them was right next to the shower (yes, the shower is in the room. no separation whatsoever) and had an air conditioner blowing on your head all night. The sink is in the main room as well. The toilet is "separate" but it's in a tiny closet with a pole almost blocking it. Is this even legal? No way the room was up to code. The wall near the shower/bed was cracking and showed signs of black mold. The carpet was so filthy it turned my kids feet black. We all slept on top of the covers, afraid to even see the quality (or lack thereof) of the bed sheets. The room felt like a prison cell but somehow worse. My mother in law stayed in a room with a single bed. The bathroom was separated from the main room. It was noticeably better, but sleeping on the beach in a tent would have been better, too. This hotel is NOT kid friendly. The staff seemed upset we even brought kids. The kiddie pool was drained. Don't bring your kids here unless you want to punish them for being bad. I don't know how this place calls itself a 2 star hotel. It is literally the bottom of the barrel. Absolutely disgusting. Stay somewhere else. read more

At the outset to be fair, I should report that we visited this hotel during the remnants of hurricane Ian carring high winds and driving rain. The hotel itself is very charming with some nice old world features and very beachy. The staff is especially friendly and helpful. The room was very small but nicely appointed and charming. Everything was very clean. The view from our room was unhindered with a clear view of the beach. We stayed here for two nights. The first night I'm sorry to say was a bit of a nightmare because I woke up at 3 AM to find high winds blowing into the room through the cracks around a window air conditioner. One could very well ask why there was still an air conditioner in October. It was irresponsible to not have properly insulated the air conditioner! Our second night was much better as the air conditioner was removed per our request. It was raining quite heavily when we entered the hotel and a member of the staff allowed us to put our drenched clothes in the dryer. We really appreciated that effort. read more

I know this is a 2 star hotel but Jesus Christ. We stayed here because our friend stayed here for a wedding but their 1 bed is like 2 stars because they had an actual bathroom. It was the 3 of us. I think a shady motel would be better Con: -230$ for 1 night -bathroom is basically in the bedroom for a 2 bed. Check out the hotel room and the hotel lobby before you check in. I was shocked to see the current pictures on Bookings.com did not look at all like the hotel. To begin, you could barely read the sign on the front of the hotel. This place needs a complete remodel. It looks more like a halfway house than a hotel. The rooms start on the second floor, wires were showing on the ceiling in the hallway. The sheets on the bed looked worn and used, not clean. You could hear conversations in the next room. No soundproofing between rooms. The only positive point was "the staff was pleasant". read more

Quaint and charming, No air conditioning and no elevator but very friendly staff we had a really nice stay. You can't beat the location it's basically on the water (close enough for me) I did request a room on the second floor and was told they could accommodate that but then I got there and my room was on the top floor! The people here are very nice and the rooms are nice and quaint. However, as a disclaimer- and I believe this is only some rooms- our shower was connected to the main room, as pictured, and the bathroom was a tiny 28 inch wide box with a toilet and the sink on the outside as well. Which isn't bad it's just... strange. Something I've never seen before. It was not a bad place at all to stay, but I don't think I would stay there again. read more

The hamburger joint across the street from the Mayfair Hotel is Super Frigging AWESOME!!! I highly recommend going. It's worth the trip!!! What I would like to tell you is a horrific tale. I dislike going negative, but I recently took a week off of work. I decided to treat myself to an ocean front view, where I do nothing but eat, sleep, and enjoy the beach of beautiful Belmar NJ. 1000 Ocean Ave. Belmar Hotel... The room was particularly disturbing. No cable, a television next to a shower? Really? A bed with a mirror as the headboard? What? Unclean toilet. Never scrubbed ever? No!!! A bubbling ceiling cracking out... BLACK MOLD!!! Unfinished walls... No outlet for my clippers at the sink.... On Monday, I took a nap at 12pm... Bad idea... Really really bad idea... I figured I was leaving in a few days... So no need to clean. I clean on my own. I'm extremely responsible. The maid bashed at the door waking me... No... Scaring me half to death... She screamed at me saying I HAD TO OPEN UP AND GET OUT OF MY ROOM!!! I was half asleep still when the actual owner came and unlocked the door with his key. I hadn't noticed, but I had the chain latch in place. I apologized and was getting up to unlatch the door when the manager, a very large imposing man, peppered me with insults cursive language, threats to injure, maim, and/or murder myself, and my family. One after another racial insult was hurled against me... Then he kicked with brute force, at my latched door. One after another kick at my door scared me to death... I told him to stop kicking. 'Please, please, stop sir...' I unlatched the door. I explained I would not leave my room, as some of my goods had mysteriously disappeared. He then told me he felt threatened.. That I should vacate asap. He said he was calling the police. I waited in vain. The police never arrived. Of course. You make your own decision. Know I only tell this tale because I do not want anyone to have a similar experience. read more

Small, quaint beachfront hotel. The hotel is perfectly situated across the street from beautiful Belmar Beach. It's definitely old & the lobby is like walking back in time. Pros: Friendly staff. We were able to check-in early. Although our room was very small, it was adequate for 2 people to shower & sleep. Our room was impeccably clean! Our room included a full-size bed (new & very comfy), bathroom with a nice, clean shower, small refrigerator, wall-mounted TV. The pool was nice & clean. They said they had beach chairs you can borrow, if needed. Cons: Our room was very small. The room did not have a blow dryer & no in-room coffee. Keurig coffee available in the lobby (meh). No parking lot. Street parking only. We liked it & would stay here again. read more

This the only hotel on the ocean ave and very convenintly located right in the middle of everything. Super need and cozy. Beautiful rooms, nice colors. Friendly staff. They also have a big pool and patio area. If you get the ocean room, you can see the waves and acatually hear them with an open window. There is a free parking in the streets. We had no issues. highly recommend the place. The price is reasonable for a ocean front room. read more

Mayfair Hotel I've stayed in tons of hotels and lived in college dorms and this is by far the worst place I have ever stayed at. I would have been better off setting up a tent on the beach than staying here. The only pro of this hotel is the location. But the location is also a con. If you're looking for even a little bit of quiet, this is NOT it! It's literally right across from the beach which is awesome, but you can hear every loud and obnoxious vehicle driving by. The walls are so paper thin we could hear everything the next door rooms were doing. There is a window A/C that barely worked (FYI even with it on you can still hear everything next door). The bed itself is sooo horribly cheap, I woke up with back pain from the bed. The fitted sheet wouldn't even stay on the bed. We stayed for two nights and it was the worst sleep I've ever had. The curtains were so thin and wouldn't even close so who knows who saw in. And have fun waking up to the blinding sun in the morning!! The toilet did not flush. The bathroom light did not work either. The TV wouldn't even work, and no cable. It's an old building so no elevator and it's ungodly hot all over the hotel. The decor is pretty awful, but not that big of a deal compared to the rest of the disasters going on at this hotel. Good luck finding parking. You have to park on the street for free mind you, if you can find a spot that is. Or pay a ridiculous amount for parking on Ocean Ave. I paid a decent amount a night, we expected a lot better honestly. Do NOT recommend!!! I would give it 0 Stars if I could. read more

The rooms were clean, lovely Ocean views and no frills. No coffe maker, blow dryer, shampoo, tissues etc in the rooms. There is no parking at all. Pool area is cluttered with a collection of vegetable plants and random items very old and run down. There are several large kitchens and approximately 10 changed up refrigerators off of the lobby with no explanation from management as to what they are there for since there is no restaurant on premise. We found the common areas, a series of bizarrely decorated rooms, a mismatch of old furniture and about 2 dozen giants plants that unfortunately harber cockroaches. read more

BEWARE. We stayed at this Hotel and it was the most run down dumpy hotel I've ever stayed at. We check in and it took 15 mins and multiple employees passing and ignoring us to finally check us in. The man that checked us in made us feel INCREDIBLY uncomfortable with his comments, one of them in being a question about why my boyfriend wasn't paying for the room and I was. After we checked in the same man that checked us in kept coming into our room without being asked to, to apparently fix some lamps that we had to ask multiple times if they could just leave them be and give us our SPACE AND PRIVACY. Why wasn't this room prepared for us in the first place before arrival??? Then my boyfriend leaves the room and Im alone and the man once again knocks on the door and basically pushes his way through to "fix the lamps" WTF? He leaves but not before touching my Bikini bottoms and putting them from the floor to on top of the nightstand...again, WTF? Also, the shower is literally across the bed which they show absolutely no photos of bc why would they? That's weird as all hell! They offered no soap, no shampoo, nothing. It was a gorgeous weekend in the 80's and it would have been nice to lay by the pool since that's an amenity they offer and part of the reason we paid the money for this hotel and THIS is what their pool looked like. I paid close to 180 for this room...and I.T was disgusting and run down.... We checked out and was not even asked how our stay was...instead the woman just took the keys and joked about it being "express checkout"....well too bad you don't have express check in Mayfair so we don't have to deal with your horrendously socially awkward check in guy. This was exactly what we were looking for in a hotel for a weekend getaway. Tim (night manager) is fantastic - he was incredibly helpful and kind. There is one morning desk manager who was miserable, and he's the only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars. It was 8am and we needed our stroller (which Tim graciously put behind the desk so we didn't need to lug it up a flight of stairs the night before) and the man was watching TV and literally said "what do you want" when we rang the bell to get his attention. Overall, this is a good hotel next to the beach if you plan on spending the majority of your visit outside of the hotel but need a clean, safe place to sleep. The moment I stepped foot in here, I a) was speechless and b) knew it was Yelp-worthy. First off, I did not give this joke of a hotel four stars because it's the Ritz. I gave it four stars because it's so ridiculous that it's comical. You walk in and notice the place looks like it's been decorated by someone's 90-year old senile grandmother who is obsessed with creepy little dolls and statues. Smell: moldy, old. Lighting: non-existent. Weird old men (friendly, harmless) walking around everywhere. Completely random elliptical trainer in the LOBBY. You know, in case anyone wants an ocean view workout in front of every guest that checks in. You notice the entire place is carpeted. I swear the WALLS were carpeted. I've never seen that much carpet in one place in my life. I stayed in room 108 but had friends in room 122 across the hall. My room was definitely decorated by someone who belongs in an insane asylum. Shower across from my bed. Toilet and sink in a closet. Shingled awning in the room. Weird owl decorations. Peeling wallpaper. My friends' room, however, was an improvement. Cute wicker furnishings, much roomier (in case that elliptical didn't work out for you, you could do aerobics in this room). Got a much more normal vibe from that one. All of the eeriness aside, the linens were spotless, beds firm and comfortable, and the communal bathroom - yes, that's right - on the floor was spotless, considering everyone on the floor can use it. I'd stay here again because a) it was cheap b) I didn't wake up covered in bug bites and c) it's thisclose to my two summer meccas - the beach and D'Jais. Plus, I ended up drinking so much that the decor just sort of faded into the background. read more

It's hard to write this one because I wanted The Mayfair to be better than it is. The Mayfair is this really charming hotel, perfectly located right across from the boardwalk at 10th Ave in Belmar. It was built in the 1920's. From the outside it looks like a gigantic east coast wood-sided porched house. Inside it possesses a nostalgic beach hotel elegance with its grand staircase and high tin ceilings. The lobby rooms are large and sunny with many many plants and comfortable rocking chairs. Once there was a dance floor and restaurant...it must have been quite a place. Actually, I think the place is fine for couples without kids. As a family we found The Mayfair fairly inconvenient and run down. The toilet area was carpeted, not too recently either. One of our double beds was sagging and uncomfortable. There is a kitchen downstairs but it had some fast crawly friends whose names I won't mention. Also, the worst part (for me) was that they don't make any coffee. Come on! Even the cheapest hotel should offer good coffee to it's guests. Being able to quickly grab a cup first thing in the morning without worrying about leaving the kids for 10 minutes while you brew it yourself or walk to 7-Eleven can make the difference between a good and a bad day. So, listen close Mayfair Hotel: 1. fresh coffee at all times 2. lose that toilet carpet 3. check for sagging mattresses And I'll take this all back. read more

I laugh at the negative reviews, all most likely written by entitled, spoiled people who don't work their assess off like the rest of us and like to keep most of our hard-earned money. I don't know where else someone can stay BEACHFRONT for $90 a night-including taxes and fees (I'm a "Booking.com Genius")! All this whining about stuff that doesn't matter. The rooms are cute, you can get an ocean view, they have smart TVs where you can watch shows from your streaming accounts and the staff is super friendly. I would rate it a zero if I could. I am not picky at all and the hotel was the creepiest place I've ever stayed. The pictures online look nothing like the place. It smells like mold and dust. The staff was so incredibly rude and creepy to a group of young girls. We saw the room and immediately wanted a refund and they told us no. So after feeling unsafe, creeped out and dirty... They did not give us a refund that we deserved. I am honestly shocked that the place is still in service do to health and safety concerns. I needed a room for one night close to Bar A as a group of old school mates were getting together. There are few choices in Belmar. I took a look at the options and from the reviews that I read I decided to give the Mayfair a shot. I was looking for a clean, comfortable place to take a shower and get a decent nights sleep and didn't want to spend a fortune. Parking in Belmar is a little tough but after driving around for 10 minutes I found a spot on a side street a block and a half away.Two friendly gentlemen met me at the front desk and we had a nice chat. The shower walls were a little rough but the owner told me that they were in the process of upgrading them, he offered me a different room but told him I was fine. Yes the shower is in the room at the foot of the bed but it worked for me. It has an under the counter size refrigerator and a through the wall a/c that was adequate. I was on the second floor in the front of the building and had a great view of the ocean. 7-11 is two blocks away. It's not the Hilton but it did the trick for me. It's the JERSEY SHORE! And it was $150,no hidden fees or taxes. I spent a few hours on the beach then Ubbered to Bar A for $10 and had a great time with old friends. I would stay there again, it worked for me. read more

I grew up in the area and am very familiar with the reputation Mayfair has always had. It's an old boarding house and still provides shelter for dirty and unfriendly middle aged men who smoke cigarettes outside at all hours of the day. I was visiting my hometown for a weekend with my fiancé and decided to give it a shot as there was an ocean front room available at a pretty low cost. To be honest, the room was spotless and the decor inside the room itself was modern and bright. Obviously the shower at the foot of the bed and the size of the room wasn't ideal but for the price and for the vibe of an oceanfront hotel it was fine. What deems this property worthy of 1 star is the rude and unprofessional email I received the following day from hotel staff saying they will be charging me a cleaning fee of $65 for having my registered service animal and claiming that I "snuck the animal in". I would have had no problem paying the fee had the email been professional, kindly written, and respectful. Not once did staff even ask how our stay was or thanked us for staying in the midst of their accusatory and demanding email. It's such a shame because I genuinely did enjoy my stay and raved about it to my family and friends who were surprised that my fiancé and I stayed at the Mayfair. I take all those praises back. Not only was it disrespectful to scold somebody for having a service animal, but it's outwardly illegal. Definitely don't stay here if you want to be a respected guest. read more

i absolutely do not understand the negative reviews about this hotel. its not the ritz carlton, but its not claiming to be!! it is a cute, clean, convenient hotel directly on the beach (literally right across the street). my bf and i stayed here for the weekend, we got a beach front room (it was BEAUTIFUL), we basically just used the room to shower and sleep and it was everything we could have needed. the bed was SO comfy, the AC in the room was super powerful and kept the room nice and cool. we visited belmar on the hottest weekend of the year, and i do not swim in the ocean, so the pool at the hotel was a LIFESAVER. its true, the shower, sink, and mirror are in the actual room (not tucked away in a bathroom), but that was one of the most endearing things about it. if you're looking to spend the weekend in this cute, fun beach town, but not looking to spend a ton of money for a clean, cute place to stay, this is your place. read more

My sister and i stayed at the Mayfair for 2 weeks in July. My Dad had a serious car accident and was at the Trauma Center at the Jersey Shore Medical Center. The staff could not have been more accommodating. Our stay was not just for a weekend. The room was clean and welcoming at the end of many a long day at the hospital. The view that we had from the window was lovely and we often took a long stroll on the boardwalk to clear our minds. The warmth and hospitality of all of the employees was very much appreciated at a time when it really did count. I look forward to returning under much happier circumstances. This is not a hotel for snobby pool people. This is a beach hotel right across from the ocean at an economical price and a beautiful view and location. So if you like sand and salt water where most of your day is outside of your room this is a 5 star hotel with a wonderful staff led by Jeannie. It features a lobby right out of Hollywood noire and I'm surprised that it hasn't yet been in a movie. Once again if you are an ocean person who loves walks on the boardwalk at night after a day at the beach swimming in the Atlantic this is the place for you!!! read more

wow, this hotel is right out of the past. if you were looking for an experience never forgotten stay here. the eccentricity is beautiful, tons of furniture, a kitchen for everyone to use, with refrigerators, stoves, a big eating area facing the ocean across the street. it certainly isn't a Marriott, but it also isn't sterile and unfriendly. all of the staff is extremely helpful and friendly. the beach is right across the street, right out the front door. they have a huge swimming pool, something you dont see at the beach. the rooms are quite unusual, decorated more like a B&B than a hotel, each room has a refrigerator, the baths are private, with a sink in the room. the price couldn't be beat, no place on the ocean is this inexpensive. Yes, you give up the newness of a chain, but you gain in it's originality. this hotel will not last much longer, someone with millions of dollars will buy it up and turn it into a boutique hotel at 5 times the cost. go while you can it is definitely worth it. read more
