To find this gem in Toms River was truly amazing! I stayed after Christmas and this Victorian Mansion was heavenly! It was fully decorated for Christmas, with Christmas music playing throughout the house and my room even had it's own Christmas tree! I checked-in during tea time and live piano music was being performed in the lobby! My room was clean, warm and cozy. The shared common area had waters, a Keurig machine and delicious home-made treats available. The included breakfast was my favorite part! Everything home-made from the scones, to frittata, fruit salad, lemon cream and clotted cream. It was served in a delightful lavender room with a blazing antique fireplace. If you love antiques and old mansions and fully decorated rooms-this place is for you! Great for a romantic couple getaway, but I just felt like pampering myself for Christmas. Leaving a review for the Mathis House is past due for me. I found this place doing a Google search for "hot tea" in Toms River. I called them and expected them to say that they had no vegan or gluten-free options. But the owner, Vicki, answered the phone and told me they had vegan and gluten-free tea service, including scones, sandwiches, desserts, and more. I was shocked! My mom and I went there for lunch about a week later. Our waitress was so knowledgeable about the house and the food options and she answered all of our questions. That was the beginning of a long history of coming to the Mathis House. I have since brought groups of friends ranging from five to twenty. We have attended a few Afternoon Teas, including the holiday sessions; Cinco de Mayo, and a Masquerade Murder Mystery. I recently celebrated my birthday there. My favorite thing about the house is how we can view the lovely decorations. The house is decorated to reflect every season. Plus, I love how vintage and classy the atmosphere feels. I've never been to a place like this and came around the holiday time with my family. We have told him ahead of time about dietary restrictions and they were great at honoring that throughout the meal. I like the variety of tea options however, the tea kettle water did not stay warm for very long. Our favorite part of the meal was the soup. The sandwiches, snacks and desserts were underwhelming unfortunately. The place was decorated beautifully. Each room has its own vibe/theme which was adorable. Lovely afternoon tea. Small salad, delicious cup of soup with croutons (we had carrot coconut) and a nice presentation of tea sandwiches, scones, dessert. The soup, scones, and tea sandwiches were amazing. The dessert was lovely, perhaps not as imaginative as other afternoon teas but still very lovely. They don't rush you which is so nice. You can wander the first and second floor of the mansion to view the other tea rooms, retail shopping, and even peek at some of the bedrooms if they're open at the time. read more

My husband and I had a wonderful one night stay at the Mathis House at the end of September. We had a party to attend down in Toms River and we wanted to also celebrate our 10 year anniversary so I was looking for a nice place to stay the evening. Someone recommended the Mathis House and I am so glad they did! What a cute bed and breakfast! We arrived around 3:00 to check in and we stayed in the room, Lady Genevieve. It was a very cute Parisian themed room with a queen bed, a small TV, a cute vanity, and a smallish bathroom. We were brought up to the room by the hostess down in the tea room. She explained to us there are snacks upstairs by the rooms and a Keurig coffee maker. She also warned us that the house is quite old, so it takes time for the shower to heat up. To be honest, I didn't feel like it took that long at all, and everything was perfect. The bed was comfortable, the room was clean, temperature was perfect, and the included breakfast in the morning just really hit the spot! Breakfast was at 9:30 downstairs in the tea room (which was so cute and decorated for Fall). I had a coffee and an orange juice. The breakfast spread was absolutely delicious. The waitress brought out a board of all the most amazing breakfast foods. We got cinnamon raison french toast, sausage and cheese frittatas, bacon, fresh fruit, and orange / cranberry scones. It was all to die for. So so good. And the scone? Top notch! I felt full, but not overly full. It was the perfect amount for the both of us and it was such a nice way to end an enjoyable stay at the Mathis House. read more

first time ever going here , place was amazing , Awesome Design & details! it was for a bridal shower with at least 35 guests! each table had about 4 to 5 ladies ! Now upon arrival 11:00 am ( time listed ) each table had 3 pots of different teas to try ! Table were set nicely accordingly to the tea Theme out table did not have Sugar cube bowl on it and we couldn't drink our hot tea until we received sugar! Now our salads were being served , our table which was middle of the room were last to receive a tea cup of salad which was very fresh and delicious, Our choice of soup was served next , again last to be served . But what was disappointing was having to hear about how this place came to light ! Now normally it would have been okay to stop eating and listen to the tour guild tell his tale but we were only there for 2 hours ( again bridal shower ) When the story was over we were then served the 3 tiers of finger sandwiches which were Egg salad on cut in half croissant ! Cucumber & scallions cream cheese, little tuna salad and a turkey & cheese ! bottom shelf , only small half per person was offered . second level had just one blue berry scone per person! they were soft and very sweet! Top shelf of the tier was sweets little bite size pieces of marble cakes , 2 straw berries covered in chocolate ( 4 ppl at table ) a few mini cupcakes ! The hostess was asked by several guest to please put the Air Conditioner on it was very hot out that day we were all sweating that also ruined the experience !! Would I go again ? I have lived in Toms River for 10 years and point honestly did not know this place existed until two weeks ago. It is such a pleasant time. I think that is the best way to describe it. Everyone in the staff is so kind and knowledgeable about the tea. They take photos for you which was nice. There's also a little gift shop where you can purchase teas or even local goods. What a nice Victorian B&B tight in the heart of Tom's River. As their ad says "The Lixury of Today, the Coziness of Yesterday ". I did not stay here but since I was in the area , I was curious. You can book small gatherings like a moderate-sized party ie anniversaries, birthdays, corporate and tea. Very " English" if you get my point. There are five bedrooms in this three-story Victorian home. I believe the rates are mentioned in their website. They also sell on the third floor seasonal items such as Christmas & Thanksgiving tchotchkes with gift baskets. This is also a nice romantic getaway for those of that ilk. read more

We have been going to Mathis Tea House for many years for Christmas Tea. It has always been a lovely experience! The entire house is decorated beautifully! I appreciated a slight change in the section of sandwiches this year. Typically it's the same ones each year. I would like to see a more homemade dessert selection rather than just out of a box but they are still good. My only disappointment was the tea. We were started with 4 pots of tea for a table of 12 people. Typically it is 1 pot per person. But we were told they would bring more as needed and new flavors. The had absolutely no flavor to it. Each tea we were given tasted like hot water. We asked for 1 tea to be made stronger but it still tasted extremely weak. Finally when I ordered one last pot I asked for it to be stronger. It was finally at the strength we used to experience there. The waitress said she used 3 tea bags for it. I get trying to save a bit on costs but it's at the cost of the product being served. We will still go back for years to come. But if you want taste to your tea be sure to specifially ask for stromg and to leave the tea bags in to brew longer. Cute though fairly expensive, my mom and I came to the Mathis house during their Christmas theme. My mom had come once before with a friend and I decided to treat her a second time. We've been to a few tea houses and this is definitely one of the better ones. We almost didn't come because of the weather, but they only do refunds as store credit, so we rescheduled. Originally we were to be set up in the parlor, but my mom wanted to be in the sea glass room, a side room with pink walls, and they were very accommodating. Our server was personable, and offered us her recommendations and preferences, giving us an idea on what to look forward to. Being in a side room was good because we were alone there and as more people came through the day, it was getting quite loud, though decently blocked out from our end. The decorations are very cute, though not all consistently Victorian Esque. Christmas music played from an echo dot in the room. We got a holiday tea menu to pick out our teas from. Around when we got the soup (two options, cream of mushroom or something with coconut) and salad, we also got our teas. One pot per person. Finally we got our tower. Our bellies were full with tea so even though the food itself isn't super filling, we were feeling full, and they offered us a to go box. While I really enjoyed the soup and salad, the sandwiches on the tea tower were mid, I didn't quite enjoy the sandwich collection, both the breads and the fillings. The scones were also on the softer side, which I didn't mind but my mom prefers. Overall it was a very calm and easy going experience. Note that the final price on the receipt was not the same as the pre-order fee over the phone, perhaps a result of extra fees, there's no breakdown other than the cost per person. read more

What a lovely place to go to. I've been here for a baby shower which was super cute and we had half of the house to ourselves between the two rooms. Food was very fresh. The soups are amazing and so good! Love all the tea options and you get so much in the pot. It's also BYOB which is nice if you want some champagne or wine. I've been watching the FB page for a few months now, looking at all the great events they host and finally made the trip up to Toms River for the day to give them a try. I'm very glad I did! We were seated immediately upon arrival; it wasn't super busy during our visit, just our table and one other in another room. Our server was great; she was very knowledgeable and very attentive during our visit. I loved that you had a stand with a variety of tea cups in the middle of the table for you to choose for your visit. I chose to try the Cotton Candy tea which was pretty good. We had the carrot coconut soup, a variety of tea sandwiches, apricot mini scone, and dessert assortment. Everything tasted as if it was freshly made and the scones were even served slightly warm. WOW! We went here with my in-laws and one year old dauber. I'm vegan and was worried about whether or not I'd have anything to eat. My mother-in-law called them in advance and the chef put together an incredible vegan platter for me. They made their carrot/ginger soup with almond milk and the platter was full of delicious vegan cream cheese sandwiches, chocolates, blueberry scone and incredible sweet shaved ice. A dear friend invited 3 of us to join for dinner at Mathis. They had a card on the table which indicated what you could "order" in that they listed various items with the word "or" inbetween-- this means you get a choice. No waitress ever came by so I finally asked for one to help us. It turns out the entire menu was dumped on one plate. They pork loin was gray and tough/end cut, the 2 turkey slices were tough and chewy. There was a smattering of stuffing, mashed potatoes, and some turnip looking thing. I left most of it behind. Very fun and unique experience! The decor was beautiful and they have a huge tea menu. You get to pick your own tea cup which was a cute touch. I love that each person gets to pick their own tea but the waitress we had wasn't too knowledgeable about what they offer. It's nice that we get to choose our soups and the main course provided one of each item for everyone so no sharing needed! The scones and cream were hands down the best part. We went the Sunday after Valentine's day so the desserts they gave us were clearly leftover and stale so that was a huge disappointment because they were beautiful. Was so excited to go for afternoon tea for my 40th birthday and my aunt's birthday as well. I called and made reservations weeks ahead of time and even discussed menu with the person. We got there and it was as if they were surprised we were even there. We were seated and waited quite a while to get tea, food, etc. By the time we were asked what we wanted to eat (about an hour and half after our reservation time) they had ran out of the salad, the soups, and milk. When we asked why this was happening and told the woman we were so disappointed, she acted annoyed. The entire time she just acted like we were an inconvenience. If I could I'd give 4.5 stars. We've probably had 6-8 tea services since Vicki has taken over. The food keeps improving and quite delicious. I particularly like chocolate chip scones and the baker was kind enough to accommodate my special request but I know that cannot always be done. Everything was still decorated and even tho the holidays are over there was still some Christmas magic in the air including talented musicians. There was no rush and I appreciate having the few hours to enjoy each course. You think you will finish it all but we still came home with goodies. In town for a funeral. Found this place looking for a hotel... most of the local hotels are poorly rated because they're full of homeless people over the winter. Who wants that? And 600 Main was highly rated, and reasonable affordable at 100$ for the night. Vicky the owner was nice, and helpful, and made us a nice breakfast at a time of our choosing the next morning. My family and I just got back from a trip to the Mathis House! We all had such a wonderful time. We went for the first tea setting at 11am. Out server was Toni. she was so pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable. The rooms are setup beautifully. We started off with a choice of teas (you get to choose 3). They are also served with little cozies so the tea is kept warm in their pots. I also loved the little sugarcubes as well. It took me back to my childhood. So very quaint. We started off with salad and then moved on to soup which was served in teacups. . The teas were so delicious! We moved in to finger sandwiches, scones and then desserts - all displayed on a 3 tiered tray. everything was delicious. We are already planning our next trip for the Holiday Victorian Tea! Came here for Mother's Day high tea. It was a lovely leisurely experience. It was very busy so I can totally understand moments where it was slow. They give you a ton of tea and the scones are wow! Honestly their clotted cream is the BEST I have ever had. My only big criticism is they mention to let them know of dietary restrictions. I called a month early to book my reservation and let them know of specific dietary restrictions. They said sounds good we can accommodate. Few days before once the menu came out I called to clarify and they told me sounds good. I get there and they couldn't accommodate at all. For that reason I took off two stars because in 2021 we need to be able to be inclusive and accommodate allergies and medical dietary restrictions. No one wants to be the annoying person asking for accommodations, we just have to. I did love everything else about it. But for that reason I dont know if I would return since that's a concern. read more
