3/25/26 update: We came on a Wednesday night and yes you definitely have to come here on a week night. It wasn't overly crowded and there were plenty of seats/parking spaces. We ordered choco Turkish cake, baklava cheesecake, and two different kinds of matcha cloud. The choco Turkish cake was tasty. It wasn't too rich. The baklava cheesecake is lighter and it gets a little crispy at the bottom. We got one matcha cloud with blueberry and the other one with coconut water. You can also choose how much sugar you want. I visited Matari coffee shop in Lombard. The decor is fancy & unique feels like you are in a different country. Behind the glass counter are delicious looking pastries. The drink menu has been varieties of hot and cold beverages. Latte, Turkish coffee, house blend, chai, espresso. Happy Hour you can enjoy a nice glass of a Mojito. Nice size seating area. The drinks presentation is served in nice glass and cups. A bit overpriced for the drinks and pastries. I've been twice and only ordered the hot latte which was decent. Service needs improvement. Decided to try this place out and got two Oreo cake pops and a caramel macchiato. They didn't have a decaf roast, so I couldn't really try the coffee this time -- maybe I'll get something else next time. The inside is really nice -- I was honestly surprised! Everything matches so well with all the gold accents, and it's super clean. Service at the front was friendly and quick. I've heard a ton of mixed reviews about Matari mostly that the vibes are great but the drinks and food are not good! Well I came in Friday night and it was PACKED to the point I was overstimulated! It was tooo much noise! Kids crying, yelling and adults talking louder and louder. I purchased the Matari Tea which is described like a Kashmiri chai. It was good but not the best I've had. I was really excited to check out matari coffee. Sadly it fell very short and did not live up to the hype. The good - The atmosphere is very light, bright, modern and clean. There is plenty of seating. .... But the music was way too loud while I was there. I had a hard time having a conversation with my friend bc of this. Service was not the best, it took about 5 mins to be acknowledged and when I did place my order the staff member seemed like she wanted to be anywhere but there. The pager I was given didn't work, I ended up going to the counter to see if my order was completed. Which it was but I didn't know until way later. I ordered the Yemeni tea with light sugar and it was the worst I've had. It was full of sugar and didn't taste like tea at all. I also ordered the honey comb pastry and it was dry, bland and not edible. This location is a couple weeks old so I'm hoping the kinks get worked out. The decor is so cool here and gives Egyptian hieroglyphics vibes. We ordered the Adeni Chai, hot chocolate, Dubai Chocolate, and one pastry. The chai was excellent and was more than enough for our party of four and we ordered the small portion. They gave us complimentary Dubai chocolate when my daughter wanted another one and that was so sweet of them. However, the pastry we ordered was dry. I'm not sure what bakery Matari gets their desserts from but you can tell the difference when it's not house-made. I wish these new Yemeni tea shops made their baked goods in house. The place is usually packed in the evenings and it's hard to get a table, just be a little patient. read more

I ordered a Qishir hot beverage and a Milk cake. Both hit the spot for a late night after dinner dessert/snack? We were fortunate to go to Matari during its (soft) opening weekend. It was packed on Sunday afternoon when we went, but thankfully it's large inside and there were some open tables in the back for two people each. The interior has an interesting black & gold theme, but I'm not sure what's up with the Greek letters or hieroglyphics. In any case, we ordered an iced butterscotch latte, a cappuccino, a vanilla cake pop, and a slice of three milk Lotus cake. Their dessert selection looked amazing. My wife enjoyed the butterscotch latte. The cappuccino was mediocre at best. The milk foam was minimal, and it was made with too hot water; by the time I could taste the coffee, I realized there wasn't much flavor from the beans. The cake pop was decent. The three milk cake was more like a one milk cake -- not very moist at all -- but the frosting on top was excellent. The cake only had a tiny bit of crumbled Biscoff cookie on top, so it also lacked in the Lotus part. It was hit and miss; not bad, but not amazing. I'd say 3.5 stars for the first visit. Still, it's nice to have yet another alternative to the big coffee chains. It was expensive, but all of these high end coffee & dessert shops are. read more

The place is very stylish and beautiful -- it's genuinely a pleasant space to be in. The atmosphere is great, and the decor is tastefully done. The staff was okay -- I didn't feel particularly special or welcomed, but there was no rudeness either. Just neutral. Why 3 stars? Simply because I didn't enjoy the taste of the food. The coffee cups were dirty on the outside, which was disappointing. I understand that coffee preparation can get messy, but I would strongly recommend wiping the cups before serving to avoid guests getting their hands dirty. That said, the cups themselves were beautiful and generously sized. As for the desserts -- they just weren't for us. We couldn't even finish half of what we ordered. What they call a "mousse" dessert wasn't a mousse at all -- it was very dense and heavy, not airy or light as a mousse should be. Surprisingly, the almond cake was more mousse-like in texture. That one was okay. But the "Dubai Chocolate" was the biggest letdown. It had no filling whatsoever. If you've been wanting to try the famous Dubai chocolate, I wouldn't recommend trying it here. The essence of Dubai chocolate is supposed to be a rich, abundant filling -- moist and flavorful. As you can see in the photo, there's barely any filling here. I genuinely love coming here with my sister. There is never not a time when we visit where the staff greets us when coming in. Now, don't get me started with the delicious goods Matari Coffee provides. My personal favorite is the Pistachio Frappuccino, a flavorful blend that you can customize at one's preference. I can't forget to mention the delicious sweets they have on their display by the register. I have such a sweet tooth for their pastries and let me mention that the Dubai Choclate Tart pairs nicely with their Hot Yemeni Latte. Overall, I love my time spent and business with Matari Coffee, they are definitely a go to spot to do work, to talk with peers, and most importantly treating oneself to a new experience. The ambiance of Matari Coffee, located at Lombard is lovely. Whenever I am around, I love coming in at all times, it can get busy in the late evenings. General review: this is a nice, clean place that's not OOTT. Your standard Yemeni coffee shop - and a good one! I did try the chai adeni and it was great. I love the outdoor seating, and always always appreciate when there is a big tap of water for people to drink from. My specific gripe: I have this gripe with almost all of the new coffee shops that are popping up, fyi. Please, please start serving at least one non-caffeinated WARM drink! If I'm coming at 10pm when most people do, I don't want a cold refresher. I want to be joining in the hot drink fun! And I'm sure I'm not totally alone in not wanting to consume caffeine at night. But, like the experience I've had at similar coffee shops, (1) there were no non caffeinated options and (2) when I asked the person behind the counter if he could make me steamed milk with cardamom, he repeatedly said no. I felt bad being persistent, but I did, and after the 7th time of asking if he could use the same spices I SAW ON THE COUNTER! In a cup of steamed milk, he said "maybe we can add the chai spices", but then was still confused about how to enter it (fair). I said you can charge me the same as the actual drink. This is not a server problem - it's the owner's problem! Here are some suggestions: steamed milk and cardamom, steamed milk and chai spices, turmeric milk, yansoon (anise) milk (which I've had at Al hamawi in bridgeview and it was amazing) - anything! I was so excited to have another Yemeni coffee option in the area but was very disappointed with my experience. I went in a group of 4 (including my toddler son) and we ordered 3 coffee drinks and asked for a small cup of whole milk for my son. We also ordered a handful of pastries. They charged us for the milk which I have not run into at the other competing cafes in the area who happily just give it to us (and very quickly too). When they called our order, only the 3 coffees were on the tray, no cup of milk and no pastries. When we asked about the pastries, they told us we didn't order any even though we paid nearly $40 for everything just 10 minutes before... they ultimately gave us the pastries after we had to repeat everything we ordered, but they tasted pretty dry/like they had been sitting out for a few days and were not fresh. I also didn't find the coffee as flavorful as some of the other spots in the area either (we ordered the Mofawar). The inside of the cafe is pretty and spacious but seems they have some kinks to work out with their customer service and ordering process. I'll continue to take my business to Qahwah House and Qamaria - much better value, quality and service. read more

Beautiful place, nice seating, but I'm afraid the beauty is only skin deep. Unmotivated and seemingly confused staff slowed the line, and not all pastry prices are marked. This lead to me purchasing a pistachio croissant role for $12, which, even if it were properly baked and delicious would be too expensive, but it turns out neither of those things could be said about it. Had the case been lit, I might have suspected it was overbaked and possibly stale, as it was hard everywhere except the very middle. That meant we couldn't eat this pricey pastry. The strawberry cheesecake was edible but not worthwhile - the food coloring did a lot of heavy lifting in that display case. Those things are what I brought home to my wife as a pick-me-up for something she's been coping with, so that was a big letdown. I called about it and left a voicemail, but it's 24 hours later and nobody has responded, so I finally threw that $12 in the garbage. The fact that it took so long for the cashier to ring me up that the screen timed out to the screen saver didn't impress either. What I enjoyed in person was a vanilla cake pop (even though I ordered red velvet), which I could have gotten quicker at Starbucks. It took 8-10 minutes for my chai, which I thought odd since it was the same beverage the person before me ordered. The Adeni Chai was delicious, thankfully, though they use more spices in the same beverage at Qahwah House down the street, and that gives it more complexity over there. It's quite loud inside and hard to have a conversation - it's great for them that they're busy, but a little acoustic treatment would have been welcome. read more

Don't fall for the fake 5 star reviews....The place is beautiful but the drinks and food were less than mediocre, even more so when you consider the prices. First off all, the menu board says Pastry $7 so you think this applies to ALL the pastries since there is no other price display on the actual items. $12 for a croissant....we got several kind and all of them were stale. NONE of them tasted like the ingredients they were supposed to have as the main flavor. All croissants had a SLIMMY filling, like wet cheap jello pudding. Nothing about the ingredients used would justify the price on top poor quality. We got 5 deserts and they just tasted sweet, no flavor profile, no distinction on what you were eating. 2 of the coffees we got were meant to have spices in them and neither my husband nor I could take any spice in any of our coffees. If you have a remotely sophisticated palate this will not do, if you just want just sweet, but beautiful slop this will be just fine. read more
