on our 15 hour drive down to florida we randomly had my check engine light come on and car trouble, after going to 4 different places and calling numerous shops at 5-6pm we were turned down and told we could be help the next day or 2. we thought our entire trip was ruined until we came across this shop and luckily came across the angel Fred and her husband. Don't got here!! they literally took my starter off my car when I was only supposed to get a diagnostic for the car. Refused to give me my car back unless I paid them for something I did not tell them to do!! I said tell me what's wrong with the car and than we can go from there. It would be extremely difficult for me to recommend Master-Tech. Earlier this year our daughters jeep was AAA towed to AAA approved Master Tech in Walterboro, SC. What started as a $1800 to $2000 head gasket job turned out to be a $3850 failure. After picking up the car in Walterboro several hours later the car broke down again in Augusta GA . Ultimately we replaced the engine after having the car towed back to our town here in Upper SC. About the best thing I can say is that Master-Tech refunded our money. read more

My '09 Honda Odyssey's alternator went bad on 4/10 as we were cruising down I-95 to FL. Walterboro is a small town and as luck would have it, the part was not available until the next day. Fred provided transportation to and from the hotel and the Master-Tech crew fixed our car as soon as the part arrived. We were back on the road with only a 24 hour delay. I also called my normal repair shop and verified that I was being charged a fair price for the work being done. My shop would not normally charge me a diagnostic fee (1 hr labor) for an obvious problem and major repair like this and that's the only reason why I did not give them 5 stars. You can read the other reviews and judge for yourself, people either love Fred or hate her. Either way, don't blame your bad luck or previous faulty repairs on Master-Tech and you should always be nice to the folks fixing your food and your cars. read more

You know that place in your nightmares where you get taken advantage of in more ways than one when your car breaks down? well... this is that place. Fred a female is the manager and her and her staff are only there for one thing... scamming people out of money. nothing more, nothing less. They tried taking advantage because we got stuck on the side of the road when a transmission seal let go. Got towed to this shop thinking that we would be getting the best service possible, boy were we wrong. they did not even look at it in timely manner, wasted an entire day on "diagnostic" so we had to get a hotel ended up stuck here for 3 days and each day we called they were putting other customers ahead of us and could not even tell us when it would even get back on the left to start repairs. finally I ended up going down there and talked with Fred again and she was completely rude yelling and insulting and had no answers for not only me but other customers who had been waiting multiple days and were not getting anywhere. This place is nothing short of a scam shop with grease monkey mechanics and clowns in the front office. So.... if you enjoy getting it hard and dry, get your car towed to mastertech transmission where you can guarantee they will take your money and your innocence. I personally would recommend having a tow strap handy so you can hook it to the front of your car and start pulling it to your destination, you will get to your destination a lot quicker and it will be a lot less hassle. STAY AWAY UNLESS YOU LIKE TO BE TREATED LIKE A HALF RATE HUMAN FROM A PLACE THAT REVIEWS THEIR OWN BUSINESS, POSING AS A HAPPY CUSTOMER. read more

Our RV broke down on I95. We were lucky enough to chug into their shop. The mechanics went above and beyond to fix our vehicle. They even stayed past closing time to get us on the road again. So being the Dad, I got a call from her and then, my wife and I went on line and found a link to Tommies so we called them and they told us to call Master Tech. Fred was great. I was taken by Master Tech due to desperation after breaking down on the 95 when a small coolant line burst on my 1999 Honda civic. It happened at about 5pm on a weekday, and I knew most of the local auto repair places were closing soon. I called Tommies towing, and they said they knew who I could take it to for repair (Master Tech). I didn't question them and while I waited for them to come get me I called Master Tech to touch base with them and to let them know I was coming in about a half hour before they closed at 6. I then called advanced auto and they said they had the coolant line in stock and it was 10 bucks! Thinking Master Tech would not have that specific coolant line in stock for my specific model of car, I called them to let them know that advanced auto had it in stock. The receptionist immediately shut me down, rather rudely, and said they only use their own suppliers. I very calmly and politely asked if she thought they would be able to get the coolant line before they closed at six and she again was pretty rude and said that their mechanic would diagnose the problem and they would handle it. I almost told the tow truck driver to take me somewhere else, but it was getting dark and I was 5 hours from home and desperate, so we went to Master Tech. Upon arrival the mechanic (I believe it was the husband and owner) told the tow truck driver to drop it in the driveway outside the building. I ran inside to give them my info, and then reminded them about the coolant line. She said the mechanic would find it. I told her I could very easily point out the hose to him, and she rudely told me I could not go near my car (it stayed outside the entire time). I watched from a distance as the mechanic took 15 min to pressure test the coolant system and find the leaking hose. At this point, he took another 5 min to remove it and came inside. Now it was 5 min till closing time. The wife, who apparently runs for parts sometimes, said it was too late to get the part. So the husband used a generic piece of straight coolant line and bent it back (the line was a U shape). It took him about 10 min to install it and fill with coolant. She then told me it would be 150 dollars. I was in shock, but had no choice but to pay the bill, so I did. Then, she told me I should replace the coolant line with the proper part when I got back home ! Once I arrived back home I went to Advanced auto, paid 10 bucks for the proper hose, and installed it myself in about 20 min. So not only did they charge me 150 dollars for a 25 min repair of a 10 dollar piece of hose and some coolant, but I still had to do the repair PROPERLY once I got back home. Very disappointed. I hope this helps others in the future make a more educated decision read more

I could not have been more pleased. My son and some buddies were driving to Florida for spring training when the car suddenly died on 95. Fortunately they were able to be towed to this AAA recommended shop. From the communication to the actual repair, everything was outstanding. At my request, the Master Tech mechanic even called my mechanic in Baltimore to share the status of the car. Fred was superb in being the facilitator. What a vacation saver Master-Tech was!! My wife and I were heading home from our honeymoon from Florida to Ottawa when we suddenly heard a loud sound coming from the engine. We pulled off the I95 in Walterboro SC. Unsure of what was wrong or what to do we found a tow that brought us to the folks at Master-Tech. And thank good for that!! They were such great help. Very friendly, actually hilarious, worked fast and brought our stress levels right down. They found the problem right away and had us on the road in no time. DO NOT GO TO MASTER-TECH If you are in the Walterboro/Cottageville/Summerville area, or from California passing through and break down in Master-techs driveway, please, get it towed elsewhere. I had my intake manifold Gasket replaced maybe three months ago because it was leaking at the rear of my intake. The technician that was working on my car started the first day I dropped it off. The following day he went on 'vacation' and my car sat for the next two days. I went back up to Master-tech and they told me what gasket set to buy, they gave me the part number and where to get it; so I went and bought it. I asked to speak to the technician when he returned and stressed the importance of doing the intake correctly to avoid a leak in the near future, and of course he berated me with "I've been a mechanic for over 25 years, I know what i'm doing, you don't have to tell me." After they had finished I was told there was 'no-warranty' because I bought the gasket set. They are shady, rude people, they tricked me into buying a gasket-set so they would not have to fix it if they messed up. Not even three months later my intake is leaking at the FRONT AND THE REAR!!! I returned to Master-tech to try and sort out the problem and was told that I would have to pay them to fix THEIR mistakes, which I refuse to do. Booke's wife, who works at the front, proceeded to get an aggressive attitude towards me. I told her that I did not like her attitude and it was making me very uncomfortable. She then proceeded with a rude sarcastic attitude saying "How can I help you?? What can I do for you?! what can I do for you?" Over and over. I told her that I had to step outside to make a phone call to avoid further verbal attacks. I did not return, which brings me here, to warn others of this crooked, shady, disaster of a shop. After I picked up the vehicle I immediately returned 20 minutes later with the concern of a 'tick' from the driver-side valve cover. I was told there is nothing they could do unless I paid them. I told them I wouldn't pay them and she kept repeating 'this scares me' 'this is why we don't do this kind of work' then gave me a valve cover gasket set, like $15 as if a bribe for me not to pursue the issue present. A day or so later my car overheated. The cause? Master-tech did not bleed my cooling system after the gasket replacement. This caused an 'air-pocket' that built up and caused my car to overheat. I filled up the coolant and bled the system, and didn't bother with going back because they had made it evident they weren't there to help anyone or fix their mistakes. After driving the car a few days, I kept noticing how hard it was to shift gears, and I would constantly miss first gear. They also replaced my clutch at the same time of my intake gasket. Upon further inspection the same technician had put my shifter boot on incorrectly, so it was binding on my shifter. The shifter itself was put on crooked and the gasket was not applied properly. The shifter/shifter housing was banged up and had decent sized gashes. The shifter boot had only 3 of the 8 screws put back in. He also managed to bend the sheet metal on the opening to the shifter housing so the shifter boot would not lay flush, which caused massive wind-noise from the shifter area. This is my Daily Driver and I can not drive with the current leak at the front and rear of the intake. So I am having to do it myself. I have mechanical knowledge and I know what I am doing. I tried to give the shop a chance and they failed. This leaves me with the task of changing the intake manifold gasket and out of the money I paid master-tech to do the job. As I started on the job today, I have already noticed many issues that Master-tech has created. read more

I cannot tell you how grateful I am for this amazing shop! We had our check engine light come on as we traveling to Florida from VA for vacation. We called these lovely people at 5:30pm on a Friday evening. I asked if they could do a simple diagnostic to see what the problem was on our Honda Odyssey; they said to bring it in and they would do it. We were looking at the possibility of taking our van to Hilton Head, and leaving it at the Honda dealership for 10 days so we could continue on to our destination, and not interrupt our vacation. But these nice people ran the diagnostic and told us we had spark plugs that were bad because of a software update that Honda needed to do. They offered to replace the spark plugs (which they didn't have, but checked an auto parts store to see if they had them and they did!). Fred, the owner drove to the place, got the plugs and the tech quickly replaced them. We arrive at 6:00pm when they closed, and left at 7:30. They literally saved our butts and our vacation! I cannot thank thank them enough! Highly recommend this business! read more

My experience with Master-Tech was positive. While driving to Florida for vacation with my family, my vehicle broke down in Walterboro South Carolina. My vehicle was towed to Master-Tech where Fred the manager was able to tell me within a few hours what was wrong with it. They provided me with a detailed assessment on what needed to be fixed and how much it would cost to move forward with the job. I decided to not move forward with job, only because it was an older vehicle, with a lot miles and I didn't feel it was worth pumping any more money into it. With that said Fred was kind, very professional and made a very difficult situation bearable. I cannot speak to the quality of their work since I didn't have them work on my vehicle. However, my experience with them was very positive and I'm grateful for the courtesy that was displayed. read more

Master Tech Transmissions is anything BUT! They are a highway trap to say the least. They completely took advantage of my situation once they knew I was stranded there from out of state and they blatantly lied to me about what needed to be done to my car! Every time I attempted to sort things out with them they claimed they had no recollection of what I was talking about. I cannot even begin to express my level of frustration with these "People" so to speak. it still haunts me as though it were yesterday and it has been nearly 2 months! My experience with Master Tech was VERY UNPLEASANT and I am horrified that they believe they can treat people the way they treated me, I was never given a decent timeline for when anything would be done to my car and they would never call me back when they said they would. I am not asking for a silver spoon but at least behave DECENTLY! They had NO customer service and they spoke with venom in there voice pretty much right after our first meeting. Trying to get in contact and stay on the same page with them was NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE!! They told me my warranty was my responsibility which I understand to a certain extent HOWEVER, they made NO attempt to help or speak with my previous mechanic on the matter. I had to remain a very consistent middle man and it became quite difficult because Master tech would as I previously stated, basically deny having any knowledge of what I was talking about! I'd have to say the worst person I dealt with was Fred. She was HIGHLY confrontational and blamed me for everything when I was confused about what was happening, and she refused to speak with anyone who was willing to communicate better on my behalf and help me with figuring out everything since I had to do it on my own. THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AND THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF BOTTOM LINE!!! DO NOT GO TO MASTER TECH TRANSMISSIONS, YOU WILL BE BROKE AND VERY UNHAPPY ONCE YOU FINALLY LEAVE IF YOU EVEN CAN! I ended up completely chancing it back to my home state which was a considerable amount of miles away because after about 4-5 days of this ridiculous hassle I could not imagine racking up anymore hotel and food expenses as well as paying these hack jobs once they FINALLY did something to my car! And I will add they also had several others who were from out of state stuck there for many days as well and with no timeline of leaving. I can only imagine what lies they told those people about what needed to be done to their car, because upon my return home I discovered that I needed only very minor and relatively easy fixes for my car and Master Tech was prepared to charge me nearly $2500 for a TRANSMISSION REBUILD! I am FLOORED to know they are AAA recommended because they DO NOT deserve that appreciative title, they are certainly NOT trustworthy! If I could give 0 stars I most certainly would! THEY ARE AS I HAVE STATED, A HIGHWAY TRAP! AVOID THEM OR RISK BEING SWINDLED BY THESE CHARLATANS AND HAVING THE MOST REVOLTING NON-EXISTENT CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE OF YOUR LIFE!! read more

I don't generally write reviews, but with the service we received at Master Tech, I had to. On our way back to North Carolina from Florida our car started making a terrible noise while we were on 95. We stopped at the exit and then we were afraid to move any further because it seemed that something was going on with the brakes. This was about 4:30. Called Triple A and we were towed to Master-Tech. When my boyfriend spoke to Brook he offered to wait for our vehicle past closing (we ended up getting there at around 6:30). This was after a big snow in South Carolina so the roads were still pretty icy and it was a Friday night. That in and of itself was worth a 5 star review, and it only got better. Once we got there he managed to get us on our way within 45 minutes. What started out as an almost nightmare situation and what we thought was going to be probably more than a 24 hour delay turned out to only be a few hours. Thank you so much!!! read more

I am one of those out of town breakdowns mentioned by previous reviewers that had an over the top excellent customer service experience. AAA sent me to Master Transmission after a transmission blow out on I-95. Fred and Brooke stayed open late on a Friday evening to receive our car from the tow truck and assess the problem. Fred helped with the name of a cab service to get 6 of us from St. George to Walterboro. Fred stayed in constant contact with me during the 3 hours we were stranded and waiting for the tow truck. She was available during the weekend to discuss options. We had Master Transmission replace the transmission but were unable to wait in Walterboro until the work was complete. We live 4 hours away. As we were trying to figure out how to come and get the car, Fred and Brooke offered to bring the car to us on their way to an event in Kentucky. They drove our car ( Brooke monitoring the transmission on the way up the mountain) to Asheville and delivered it to us!!! Who does that?? Rarely do businesses exceed my expectations but Master Transmission did and I am so grateful they were there when I needed help. Highly recommend. read more
