I would give it 3.5 stars. Tucked in a small area next to a Tiger Mart, Masa Luna is a tiny place that has a good selection of foods. They offer Salvadoran, as well as Mexican menu options. I went on a Thursday afternoon and the place was very loud and packed with guys drinking beer (already lol - I don't judge). But because of the loud music, I'd suggest ordering the food to go. I got a pupusa de queso (corn tortilla filled with cheese) and tacos con carne asada (steak tacos). Loved my pupusa! It was yummy. Definitely going back for those. However, I wasn't too impressed with the steak tacos. First of all, in their online menu it says 4 tacos for $8.99 but instead they gave me 3 tacos for $9.99 - either fix the online menu or give me the right amount of tacos. And then the tacos were a bit too oily - as of the meat has been sitting in oil for hours. The cashier was friendly. I would go back for the pupusas, but doubt anything else. read more

This place is delicious! A hidden gem! Just be aware that they don't speak English very well. To me, that is a good thing because that means there's a good chance the food will be really authentic. I had to pull out my phone and show my server a picture because she didn't understand the English word I was saying. It was no problem for me though. The only reason they didn't get 5 stars is because they were out of what I wanted. I then tried ordering a second dish, but they didn't have that either. Finally found something they had on the third try. Whatever I picked (#47) was delicious and I'm really glad I got it. Definitely check this place out. read more

This is a warm familiar type hangout for local El Salvadorans and either upbeat Spanish music is playing, or a soccer game is on the many tvs. There are varieties of pupusas, which are hand pies or enclosed hamburgers?, made from tortilla dough, and filled with various meat, cheese or vegetable combinations and pan fried. Horchata is a rice milk drink heavily sweetened and flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg. Delicious but very very sweet and they serve it in 16 oz glasses. I had a chicken tamale, which had large chunks of chicken inside and the tamale dough (masa) was much smoother and less dense than traditional Mexican tamales. It didn't have the strong corn flavor either, but I enjoyed it. The sopa con pollo - chicken soup was delicious. There was a big chunk of corn, zucchini, onions, carrot, a huge grilled jalapeño and several of yucca which is close to a firm potato in texture but more fibrous, and the flavor is mild but not earthy like potatoes. There was some sort of broken spaghetti pasta in the soup also. The soup came with two big pieces of crisp pan fried chicken ( one of the biggest chicken legs I've seen in ages) on the side, a chunk of lime and two thick, fresh grilled flour tortillas. They were welcoming and helpful, tho English is somewhat limited. A definite return for pupusas and that wonderful soup. read more

I drove by this place a few times for months now. Last night, I was determine to give this place a try. I love eating at smaller size restaurants because I believe they are family own and the food taste better. This place did not disappoint me. They have generous portion and the food are delicious! For appetizers, I tried #16, Fried yuca with pork. They ran out of pork but I ordered the fried yuca anyway. It comes with a salsa like slaw. The yuca was thick and crispy on the outside. The slaw was crunchy and tart. I think its a great combination. I also ordered #12, empanadas with plantain. This dish threw me off. It's under appetizer but the flavor is sweet. The coating is brown cinnamon sugar I believe. This wasn't my favorite, but I'm glad I tried it. For dinner, I tried #58, Seafood soup. Boy, the bowl was packed with different types of seafood: blue crab (a whole crab!), shrimps, calamaris, mussels, and fish (I got a whole tail). The soup is a light seafood brought with coconut milk. Lime wedges comes with this dish, I recommend adding this to the dish. If you are willing to get messy, roll up your sleeves and go at it. It's so good! The second dish was #59, combination of beef, chicken, and shrimp fajita. This dish is very well seasoned and cooked nicely. It comes with two thick tortillas. (I think they are tortillas). I didn't eat those because rice comes with the dish. I highly recommend to try this dish. It is tasty and a great value, $12.99. My third dish was #51, Chicken stew. This dish just place you in the comfort zone as if your mom cooked this stew. The meat is tender and falls off the bone. The dish consists of two chicken thighs and it comes with salad and rice, $10.99. Also a must try! The waitress is very nice and constantly checking if the food are OK. Whoa buddy! The food here is PHENOMENAL!! I was complaining to my friend about how there are no good Latin restaurants around here. Loudoun County is basically a barren wasteland when it comes to really good food and it seems like everything out here is generic. But that's another story for another time. When my friend said, "how about this place.." and sent me the link to this page, needless to say I had less than high hopes. First, we almost had a hard time finding it, as it's located right next to a gas station. That alone made my hopes go up a notch. If you've lived out this way for a while, then you should know about "Gas Station Thai." If you don't know about it, I feel sad for your life. I don't know what the actual name of the restaurant was, but that's what we called it and it was located right next to a gas station. The best Thai food ever! But then they moved to Virginia Beach! For the love of all that's good, WHY?!?! Anyhoo, I digress. When we walked in, people kind of gave us the side eye and looked at us as if we were lost. Like "everyone in the restaurant turned around and looked at us" type deal. That didn't bother me though. I grabbed a menu and had a seat. I ordered the carne asada based off of the review from another Yelper, and the horchata to drink. Absolutely DELICIOUS! I tried to get my order with no refried beans, but the waiter didn't hear me... probably because he has mild hearing loss. The music in there was blaring loud enough to be heard as you pass by on the Dulles Toll Road. Man, am I happy for his slight hearing impairment! Now when I tell you I don't like refried beans, I DO NOT LIKE REFRIED BEANS!!..... Or so I thought. These were the best beans I've ever tasted in my life! I could have a bowlful of them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Although that might not sit too well with the bf. Point is, they're legit. As was everything else. The carne asada was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Plus the portion size is fairly large. This is my new takeout spot! As a note for you uppity Loudoun Countiers (yes, I just made that word up), this place is not going to win an award for it's atmosphere. I mean, it's literally connected to a gas station, for goodness sake. This place nails it for Salvadoran food, exactly what an ethnic restaurant should be: authentic, low priced, and off the beaten path. In fact, off of a gas station, right next door. The food is great, but "Masa Luna" must mean "Crazy Loud" in Spanish. The chatter is loud enough, but when the music starts up, your fillings might loosen. It's loud. Ruido. Muy ruido. Ruidísimo. (Ruido means noisy.) So I've only gotten take-out from Masa Luna, and it's been excellent. The breakfast burrito yesterday might be the best I've ever had. Also nailing it was the #1 breakfast (eggs, beans, avocado, plaintains), which might be the Salvadoran equivalent of the Full English. The Full Salvadoran? El Salvadoreño Lleno? ¿Quién sabe? Anyway, my Spanish and English blitherings aside, I highly recommend this place. It might not the most impressive (from the outside) place to take a date, but then again, it's so noisy you might not be compelled to have a conversation, which might be a favor to both of you. (I'm just saying.) There are also some baked goods, but I haven't tried them. In fact, I tried to order one of them once, and they refused me, saying that it wasn't fresh enough.
