We have walked by this place many times when venturing into Dulles Town Center. When we came for an activity in the mall, we walked by and saw the big happy hour sign. The Yelp reviews were mixed but the prices and decor drew us in. After our mall event, we stopped in just 30 minutes before happy hour ended. The server was the friendliest gentleman. He immediately offered us menus, drinks and complimentary chips and the most delicious salsa. Yes, we were also offered most chip basket refills. Happy hour snacks for us consisted of flautas(fried beef in corn tortilla) and ground beef quesadillas. It was all fresh made and tasty. The margaritas are a special of $6.50 and did pack a punch's I also ordered happy hour shot of Cuervo tequila. It was a good pour. Definitely recommend happy hour! It's worth the money! read more

Very overpriced for small portions and unusual for a Mexican restaurant. Salsa and queso were extremely runny and not easy to dip with. We ordered an appetizer and our waitress didn't return to have us order lunch. I had to go to the hostess and ask to order. We also had to ask and wait for drink refills. Our waitress and the hostess didn't seem to understand English. I ordered a combo entree with chimichanga (queso on side, not on top), quesadilla and enchilada (with black beans). Well the queso came on top, black beans on the side instead of refried beans, no black beans in the enchilada. Food was ok but a complete waste of money and time. It's located in the Town Center across from Cheesecake Factory. I wasn't expecting much but came to be in good company with some friends and for the happy hour. They offered complimentary chips and salsa. We later found that the happy hour items are only available at the bar and since we were seated at a booth, we missed out on that. One of the $6 happy hour items was a quesadilla which I still intended on ordering so I stuck to it and ordered the quesadilla deluxe at the regular price $12. This was my first time at Los Toltecos Authentic Mexican restaurant. I usually enjoy a good Mexican meal but this wasn't the best experience. What was nice is that they have lunch specials on the weekend but the food was just okay. Margaritas are usually the highlight but mine was watered down and didn't have much flavor or alcohol in it. The service was okay. When we told our waiter about the drink, he didn't do anything to remedy the issue. One of the best things about the restaurant is the aesthetics. I was out and about in the mood for Mexican food and decided on Los Toltecos solely based on one Yelpers pic of their fajitas because they looked incredible! The restaurant is in the mall and it's a bit of a walk from where the gps "tells" you to park (gps takes you near Macys when the restaurant is near The Cheesecake Factory) but it was nice to browse the stores afterwards and walk off some of the food :) I sat at the bar and the bartender took a few minutes to acknowledge me despite the bar not being busy, however, once he did acknowledge me he was friendly and attentive. I went with the fajitas Texana and I had high hopes given the pic of the fajitas drew me in, and all I have to say is that they EXCEEDED my expectations! These fajitas were literally the most flavorful fajitas I've ever had and the portion was HUGE!!! I would literally venture back just for the fajitas (& the menu also had very interesting options other than fajitas that are also probably delicious). We came here to use a gift card we have had for over three years and was pleasantly surprised that this was still in the area. We were to one a few years ago and it was pretty awful (my hubby found a toothpick in his shrimp tacos) so we haven't been here in many years. I didn't realize it was in Dulles Town Center - tucked away on the first floor under the food court. Food (4/5): I was pretty impressed that this had MOLE - I am obsessed with mole! This mole was really good - I always get the Enchiladas Poblanos and sub cheese (instead of chicken) enchiladas. The sauce was nutty and a little sweet. It came with a side of rice, lettuce, pico and sour cream. I only ate one of the three enchiladas (the dinner special is $15 and lunch is $10 but only comes with two enchiladas.) I just ate the leftovers by microwaving them and they were even better the next day. Hubby got the tacos birras which was not what I expected. Usually birra tacos are dipped in the beef consume and then pan fried at the end with lots of cheese on the outside. The trio of tacos had shredded beef, cilantro and onions with a double corn tortilla with cheese melted between the two tortillas. I missed the consume and cheese on the outside. The flavor was good - even better when dipped into the beef consume, but I probably wouldn't order these again. Service (3/5): They were really nice here - our waiter came over with chips and salsa (decent) right when we sat down. Then, about halfway during our meal, he disappeared and we had another waitress who was nice enough. Really odd. Ambience (2/5): This place was a very kitschy and colorful - it was like a true Mexican fiesta. On a Saturday afternoon, it was filled with lots of kids and families and we were all seated together. The kid in the booth behind my hubby was coughing and kicking at the seat...kinda gross for this post COVID time. There was an entire back area (near the bathrooms that was not full at all. A pretty great Mexican franchise place that I've been to! I love how they give free chips and salsa for you and the salsa is freshly made it seems like. Very light salsa - not thick salsa like in a can. We got the Texana Molcajete. It was enough for 2 people! We barely finished it and even brought it home. The only thing I had a gripe with is that they only give 3 tortillas. It wasn't even enough for the amount of food. So we ended up ordering extra tortillas, which was an extra cost. Overall, it was very delicious - all different type of meats. I would definitely recommend this is if you are with someone else (like a significant other or a friend) The service was excellent! The hospitality and the decor strongly compels nostalgia to good times out with your family when you were a kid from days long gone. With that said, the food is not the best but it is what I would consider lesser average to on the nose average. Great service though we were only there briefly for drinks, err, while hubby and my pup waited for me for a quick shop at one store. This place happens to be attached to the mall with outdoor seating and allowed my hubby and pup in the patio seating. Server even brought out a bowl of cold water for my pup so that was a plus! Even though we only ordered 3 drinks total, they gave us chips and salsa and a refill of chips and salsa as I joined them after shopping the last few minutes. I could tell the food were fresh as they brought them out for the diners around us. It definitely looked better than Uncle Julio's. The guy at the bar does ok, he is respectful and smiles ... however, there are things that can be better at this place. Such as employees and manager should be nicer. They pass by you and there's not even eye contact in most instances. They should be less pushy- for example if you seat at the bar, let people relax and ask as they need or want.. versus pushing people every 3 minute by asking if they want to order.. sometimes people just come to drink something and order little by little.. they are mostly lacking or genuine customer service skills.. the food is ok, not as great as the Toltecos in Ashburn... this is a great place and in a great location - they could do better but consistency is needed. read more

11/26/22 We are back at Los Toltecos. This time however, we are eating dinner here. Upon entering the establishment, we were greeted by the hostess and shown to our table. We noticed the lovely decorations of this restaurant. It reminded us of another restaurant we have been to. Each table and chair has it's own unique design and this makes everything unique about this restaurant. Speaking of unique..., Why does the men's bathroom door look so boring and the woman's bathroom door look so FABULOUS?! Maybe the manager or store manager can explain this. The men have lovely bluish gray design with parrots of various colors in the bathroom. I noticed the men's bathroom could us anti-bacterial mats for the urinals. Also, flushing the toilet after going number 1 and 2 would be much appreciated for the next male visitor(s). My wife like the set up of the women's bathroom, but thought the men's bathroom door needed a male inca drawing on the door. The women's bathroom look much cleaner that the men's bathroom. There are vanity chairs and a mirror to sit, talk and do your duties on the royal throne. Especially if the woman or women wish to get away from their dates. Back at the tabk, our sever today is Carolina today. Carolina appeared to know most of the menu and spoke in English and Spanish. I feel she may speak at least one other language too. The food we ordered came out in a reasonable amount of time. The food was very hot, but cooled down just as fast too. The food was nice, but it wasn't as impressive as the artists who created the drawings and painting of the furniture. Still, I give this place a B for the effort. The men's bathroom could use some fixing by the hole in the wall. The food could use little more flavor, but all and all, I would definitely come back here and have the food again. It used to be one of our favorite restaurants. Now, we can't eat there anymore. We're vegetarian, which means that we do not eat chicken. If you order cheese enchiladas, they put chicken in them. That means we can't eat them, because we don't eat meat. They say they have vegetarian menu items, but when they put meat in them, they're not vegetarian. Chicken is not the same thing as cheese. Cheese enchiladas do not contain chicken. They should not put chicken in cheese enchiladas. If you get carryout or delivery you won't know they snuck chicken into your cheese enchiladas until you get them home, and then, if you're vegetarian, you can't eat your dinner. We had to go without dinner tonight because we ordered from the vegetarian menu at Los Toltecos. read more

All those years when we lived in Sterling, we never got around to trying Los Toltecos. During a recent visit to the Dulles Town Center Mall, we discovered that Los Toltecos took over the spot that once housed Vapiano. Last weekend, our son-in-law and grandsons were visiting and we all went to the mall on a Saturday. Around dinner time, we all decided that we would try Los Toltecos. We got here shortly before 5 p.m. and were greeted and seated in a booth for six. Service was prompt and friendly plus our server was patient with us as well decided what to have. I was pleased to see that they had a mole dish on the menu, "mole ranchero". This dish consists of: "shredded chicken breast topped with 'our special mole poblano sauce and cheese' served with rice, lettuce, sour cream, tomato". It also comes with your choice of either corn or flour tortillas. I chose flour ones. While the mole sauce was decent, the chocolate flavoring was faint and the sauce was watery. This dish would have been so much better if the sauce was thicker and had a bit more chocolate flavor coming through. My husband had "enchiladas supreme" which consists of: "4 enchiladas one each of beef, chicken, cheese and refried beans topped with red enchilada sauce, lettuce, sour cream & tomato, served with rice plus your choice of refried beans or black beans". He chose refried beans. While he liked his dish, he said he prefers the enchiladas at Chuy's. Our son-in-law had "pollo asado" which consists of: "marinated chicken breast served with lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, rice and your choice of corn or flour tortillas. He chose flour ones. He told us that he once worked in a Mexican restaurant in AZ that served this dish and he thought Los Toltecos' version was right up there with the one in AZ. In other words, he really liked it. As for the kids, one had "quesadilla ranchera" which came with rice. He enjoyed it but as a growing teen, he wished there was more food on his plate! One of his brothers got a kids' fajita which was served in a tortilla bowl. He, too, liked his dish. The other brother got a fajita salad which also comes in tortilla bowl. While he liked his dish, he didn't care for the side sauce saying it was too spicy for him. For drinks, I had a frozen Margarita which was okay if on the bitter side. My husband had a beer while our son-in-law had soda and the kids all had milk. All in all, it was a decent meal. We all would certainly consider coming back here and trying different dishes. read more

Tortilla Chips were very thick to withhold the Pico de Gallo. My taco salad had lots of textures. Bad news: Not enough Pico de Gallo for the Tortilla Chips. My Taco Salad was missing Rice, Guacamole, Seasonings. Woman's bathroom was very dirty and no toilet paper! I spoke Spanish to a server in a Mustard yellow shirt, but answered me in English. If individuals are interested in working FOH in a Hispanic environment, train your employees to learn, speak and understand the importance of the language that's being used in the business. What an absolute mess. Terrible experience. Took over 2 hours from when we arrived before we left. Every small task took 15 minutes (bringing silverware when asked, coming back to take orders, bringing the checks, taking drink orders). Restaurant wasn't even busy too... Someone at our table got a sizzling fajita - by the time we got forks it was lukewarm! And let me tell you - I can make a better steak in my toaster oven than the slab of meat they served me. It had ZERO seasoning - not even a pinch of salt! Overall it was a horrible experience. The food was terrible and our whole table hated it. They couldn't have cared less about us as customers supposedly, as we wasted two hours of our time waiting for bad food, not one apology! We decided to be a "walker" today in the Dulles Town Center Mall because it was too hot outside to walk. Anyway.... While walking the mall, we found, what I think is the only truly "sit down" restaurant with servers in the actual mall. We were seated quickly and given menus. Chips and salsa came with a couple of minutes. The wait staff appeared and took the drink orders and the appetizer order (i.e., guac and chips). And, then we placed the food order when the drinks arrived. The guac was nothing special; but, OK. The chips were fresh; but, again, nothing special. Both seemed to have come from "packages" (i.e., it was not fresh made guac). I ordered the Carne Asada chef special. It was served on a GIANT platter with beans and rice and a small salad with guac. It all tasted great. One other person in our party ordered the "pick your own" combo. Each of the three items were good. In summary, the best part was we felt like we had eaten but were not bloated, which is how we feel after eating at most of the Mexican restaurants around here. We plan on returning. The gentleman taking my drink order acted like he didn't hear me and kept repeating water, when I said Rum Runner. My husband asked for a small modelo but got and charged for a large. Then my drink came and there was very little juice and super strong. All it tasted like was banana liquor. I asked for a Chicken Poblano without mushrooms and my plate was riddled in mushrooms. My husband and I decided on Mexican style food last night and let me tell you it did not disappoint at the new location. I was never fan of the old Toltecos location in Sterling, outdated decor, salty food, and not the greatest service. So it didn't phase me when they closed. When I saw that they were opening at a new location at the mall I was actually excited for them, this meant a fresh start. We immediately got seated, greeted by our server (I wish I'd gotten her name), drink special offer $5 margaritas, and beautiful decor. Chips and salsa on the menu has a small disclaimer that if you get more than 2 baskets there may be an additional charge. I was thrilled that they had a great selection of vegetarian options, well done! As we were waiting for our food my husband and I were taking selfies and another very sweet server asked if we wanted a picture. After that our food came out and it was delicious! Overall I recommend this spot, I had read the other reviews posted on Yelp before I went but I didn't want to base my choice off of only 2 reviews.
