Mojito

**3.5 stars** Honestly, I've avoided going here because Mokomandy was my very most favorite restaurant. I was in the Sterling area and wanting tacos, so we took a chance on this restaurant. Walking in, it has been nicely redecorated to depict Mexican culture/cuisine, but it made me a little nostalgic for Mokomandy when looking at the bar. There was new art, chandeliers, and a cute little patio. It was a nice change! The service was quick and friendly. Our waiter was attentive and offered suggestions. We looked at the menu ahead of time and we were pretty hungry so we started with the chips & salsa. The salsa was yummy (not spicy) and the chips were handmade. Some of the chips were a little chewy still but there were some that were fried to perfection. They weren't free with every order like typical Mexican places, which didn't bother me. My husband got a mojito, which was well-made and honestly, a pretty perfect mojito. We each ordered the 3 taco platter, which comes with rice and beans. I got: El Jefe, Baja, & California Fish. My husband got: Breakfast, Birria, & BBQ. It was a good deal to get the platter! We tried his birria taco first and it was really good. It's the best birria I've had so far. The meat was tender and the dipping sauce was flavorful. My husband said his breakfast taco was spicy (the chorizo was spicier than expected, assuming), but good on flavor. He said the BBQ one was good but kind of one note. Of my tacos, I tried the El Jefe and it was like the birria taco without the dipping sauce and was the clear top one of the three I got. The fish taco was a disappointment, which I think was mostly because a lot of people hyped it on here. The fish was dry and flavorless. It kinda tasted like salmon? which I found weird. At this point, I was regretting getting the baja taco. It was really simple (to me, since it had ranch) and definitely catered to a "safe eater" population. The rice was really quite good and had hints of cilantro in it but the beans were a little salty. We ended with churros and we asked our waiter for no ice cream (dietary restriction) and he put the sprinkles and chocolate sauce on the side for us. He even asked if it was a preference and he could swap it for a different ice cream. The churros were crisp but missing more cinnamon/sugar and a little dry. They weren't bad, but I've been spoiled by Senor Ramon's. We'll definitely be back. I think this is a place that you try out a bunch of stuff and know what you like and don't.

Taco combo plate with chips and salsa

After a hectic week we did not want to cook and decided to walk over to Locals for dinner. Weather was perfect for sitting outside. Seats were comfortable and the service by Guillermo was both attentive and excellent. We started with chips, salsa, and guacamole, enjoying a margarita and a sangria. The margaritas were perfect but could have been served with much less ice. The sangria was delicious but the pour should have been more generous (it was just over half a glass). There is an opportunity for them to max out their game with better chips. They were thick and not as tasty as other venues. The salsa was a little salty, and was more liquidy than I personally prefer. The guacamole was excellent. While it seemed premade, it was fresh and had a smattering of seasonings to add to its taste. We had their tacos - our prime reason for heading here. I had their Locals taco which is their slow cooked birria recipe. I added the combo plate which included a portion of rice and a serving of black beans. I'm partial to birria and their's did not disappoint! The portions were just right, and the black beans were great. She had their Chesapeake taco and refried beans as a side. The shrimp, sauces, and vegetables in her taco worked really well together. We topped off the dinner with churros for desert. OMG! We'll be taking in this dessert treat again! Imagine four churros stacked in a squared setting with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, sprinkles, and chocolate sauce! It was a great way to end our meal! Again, service is a huge factor to us, and Guillermo went out of his way to make sure we had a good meal. Thank you Guillermo ... we'll be back!

The food was good, but I was a little disappointed by the misinformation the hostess shared. While we waited for a table, she claimed that chips and salsa were complimentary, but that was not the case. As my first experience at this restaurant, the service wasn't the best so I don't know the likelihood of dining here again.

WOW!! I am blown away. I've lived tacos all my life, and I can honestly say the Calornia fish taco was the best fish taco I've ever had. The flavors just sang. I immediately wanted to share it, (wait---no! don't eat that much!) and wished I'd gotten two. The Jefe taco was also superb, and black beans and cilantro rice were delish. Next time it's fish tacos for me

Tacos and drinks are good. The staff is nice. Food comes out pretty quickly. Birria and carnitas tacos were really good. Firecracker taco didn't have as much flavor as I was hoping for. The fajitas are really good as well and so is the tinga taco. Inside is cute and fun.

As much as I like the birria tacos here, and even though I can afford it, I must say that $6.75 for one taco is pretty crazy.

Cocktails were my La Serre Martini and my husband had a Le Steb. We both loved the goat cheese salad (think they called it something else) appetizers. I enjoyed the Steak Frites and my husband had the Halibut. Dessert was a chocolate profiterole and a crème brûlée. Our server presented me with a little dish that included two small scalloped shaped muffins that tasted almond flavored and came with a little candle that he lit at the table for me to blow out. He nor my husband sang, which was fine I love French food and this restaurant is the perfect place for it and the decor truly resembles a traditional French Brassiere. The food was beautifully presented and the wine pairing was superb. Definitely recommend having them pair your wines. The grilled shrimp was a great start. The sparkling rose made the shrimp taste even better. The goat cheese ravioli was probably my favorite savory dish of the evening. The sweet sage-maple syrup-tomato sauce was fantastic. The Sancerre was pleasant with it, although I thought the ravioli itself was more impressive than the pairing. I had to order bread so the sauce wouldnt go to waste. I ordered the lamb medium rare, but it arrived closer to medium, and initially it was somewhat underseasoned. After adding salt and pepper and getting some of the thyme from the plate into the bite, the lamb became significantly better and worked better with the Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The creamed spinach underneath was delicious on its own, but I didn't enjoy it with the wine. Interestingly, the absolute highlight of that wine pairing was the braised garlic. The sweet, mellow garlic and Châteauneuf-du-Pape were wonderful together. Dessert was the highlight of the entire pairing. The lavender ice cream was outstanding, the Chantilly surrounding it was light and delicious, and the strawberry sauce wasn't overly sweet. The Sauternes was excellent with the dessert, particularly with the fresh strawberry. This was the pairing where the food and wine truly made each other better. Even though I was one of the last diners of the evening, I never felt rushed. My server was very attentive and social which I love. It was very romantic and yet comfortable enough that dining alone wasnt awkward. I'd happily return.

Food is OK quality and prices are reasonable if not inexpensive on their specials, like the steak and ribs for only $25. Good flavor and cooked ok but a nice combo for the price. Service is OK with some wait staff being more efficient than others. There were some who knew their customers by name and took time out to talk with them but that slowed down service a little for the rest of us. Nothing too bad but you might wait a bit for refills or something you need after your food or drinks arrive. We had cool fries and it took a bit for the staff to come back to our table to check in the dining room. Similar response time for wait staff outside when we needed condiments that were ordered but didn't come out with our entrees. Cigar menu is an ok selection where there is something for everyone; however, our experience was the place ran out of the first four cigars we selected and each time the wait staff had to come back to our table to tell us they were out of that cigar. Wait staff didn't know what cigars were in stock and which they were out of. Overall, very good experience for both inside the dining area and outside where you can smoke. Recommend The Bungalow Lakehouse as it is a good experience and has a variety of experience options.
