I know there's been an explosion of great pizza place in the East Bay in recent years, and I've tried and enjoyed many of them, but one of the best values might be a good ol' mainstay. Manzano had been on my to-try list for a long time, and I finally got around to trying them by ordering a kids' cheese pizza and a margherita pizza. The pizzas were in the traditional Neapolitan style of thin crust. The margherita had a nice tomato base with fresh mozzarella and basil, while the kids pizza had tomato and more of your typical shredded mozzarella. Both were approximated 12 inches in diameter. And both were delicious. And even better? The margherita was just $20 via Postmates/Uber Eats while the kids pizza was $11. Where can you get such value in this economy? With so many pizza options to choose from, I can't think of a better place that offers a fantastic combination of quality, taste, and value. I'll definitely be ordering from Manzano next time I have a pizza craving, which will probably be very soon! read more

After a very chaotic evening due to the monumental power outage in SF, we headed back to have dinner in Oakland because Moulin Rouge at the Orpheum got cancelled. We had to seat outside so it was a bit disappointing at first but ended up working out. The host and Sarah turned the corner and made it work!! My friends and I were glad to have ended up at Marzano. Our beautiful and sweet server Sarah made our night better. Her smile and charisma made us feel welcomed and attended to. The food was delicious!! We ordered every entree, a couple of appetizers, one pizza (the diavola), and a couple of desserts. We also ordered 2 bottles of their cab, that's how good and delicious it was!! I realized I tried this place years ago and forgot all about it. lol This time I came in for happy hour bites and a cocktail. I got the meatballs and calamari and the Prickly Bliss cocktail. Calamari was good and it was a large portion. The dipping sauce is addicting. The meatballs and sauce were an explosion of flavor. Ahh I can't wait to go back for it. The cocktail was so refreshing and had a good balance of tart and sweet. I sat at the bar and customer service was exceptional! I think maybe one of the owners was helping behind the bar and she was so nice. It is a lovely restaurant where you can have a date night, family dinner, drinks with friends and dine in alone. This dinner was disappointing and underwhelming. The only thing that was actually okay was the pizza, which had a bland but fluffy crust. If you come here, just get the pizza. The table next to me had the meat pasta (they only have two pastas- a veg and a meat- which should have been a red flag) and they didn't even like it. Reheating food in small cast iron cookware does make it look cuter but it doesn't make it taste better. The chicken was a poor choice and I wish I hadn't ordered it. The spicy pepper overwhelmed the whole dish, but was somehow still one-note in flavor. The chicken was drowning in sauce... and the herbs on top really didn't complement the flavor at all- they were just like... bitter dirt. The chicken breast was dry on the inside, which was an unpleasant surprise considering how much sauce there was. The flat bread that came with the chicken was the same bland pizza dough. That whole dish needs to be totally reworked or scrapped. The three desserts we ordered tasted like they were the watered down, fat-free version of the recipe... they lacked the richness in texture and the depth of flavor you'd expect from creamy and buttery desserts. I didn't like the chili spice added to the pot de creme and the nuts on top were weirdly bitter. The panna cotta was okay, but a bit too soft in texture. The fruit crisp was the most flavorful because of the natural tartness of the stone fruit, but they should serve it with a rich gelato instead of the meh ice cream. The fruit could've been cooked longer and the crisp topping thicker. They must've been short staffed when we came because my server was working the whole room and was polite enough, but seemed rushed. She whisked away food/drink menus without even asking. When I asked for a wine pairing recommendation and she interpreted that as instructions to being me some random glass of whatever, rather than discussing options with me. And on my 2nd attempt to figure out what she actually brought me, she circled the wine on a menu with a pen and then handed it to me. Ummmm... I didn't expect this place to be "fine dining", but that's a Denny's kind of move. You'd think that a place with an extensive wine list, would have staff learn about the wines so they could actually engage with diners instead of plopping some random wine in front of them The ambiance was a mixed bag; I didn't appreciate that my 7-year old and I were sat next to the elderly couple who were dropping f-bombs like they were powered by profanity. I tipped 20%, as always, but under the watchful eye of the lurking server. Omg, girlfriend, please leave the receipts at the table and go away so customers can decide and sign in peace! Had a VERY disappointing experience at Marzano's today. It pains me to leave this review but have to call this type of behavior out. The male host at this restaurant is unfortunately racist against People of Color. It particularly stings when POC are bias against other POC. I had a reservation for 2 and requested to be seated in the parklet which was completely empty and he said that it was only for people with reservations. I reminded him that I had a reservation and he still proceeded to seat me in their "walk-in" section. I let it go because he claimed that all the parklet 4 tops could not be converted to 2 tops as they were spoken for. To my surprise and GREAT DISMAY, not even 10 minutes later, he proceeds to seat a WHITE couple at the exact same 4 top table I had requested. He lied to me and NEVER even offered an explanation as to why we could not sit there but they could. We both had small dogs so there was no other X factor except that we were BROWN and they were WHITE. I will never go back to this establishment. The food was good and the server kept things moving but after this blatant mistreatment, they have lost my patronage. Bellanico's would never treat their customers like this and that is where I will continue to take my business. read more

My daughter and I have been eating at Marzano for quite a few years now. She frequently orders the "kids" pepperoni pizza, which can definitely feed two. I love the polenta and arugula salad, which is always dressed perfectly. I've eaten other items from the menu, and they were also delicious. The wine menu has something for everyone. The seating is nice. There is an outdoor space as well. The wait staff is always nice and knowledgeable. The only thing that stops me from spending more of my paycheck here is that it's not always easy to find a parking space. read more

If I had written my review Saturday they would have received 5 stars. Excellent service, perfectly cooked medium rare steak, and very fast! Came back today on a Thursday. I ordered the same dish but instead of being cooked perfectly my medium rare steak was really well done. No pink to be seen, let alone red. I did let the wait staff know and they apologized but offered nothing beyond that. Might come back for pizza. Won't be coming back for an over cooked $42 steak. I can make it better at home....in response to you...I'm sorry I didn't tell you ahead of time. I was starving and my blood sugar was low and I didn't have time for you to send it back and remake it. I shouldn't have to. It should have come out correct from the get go. Charging $42 for a steak there is no excuse to not have it cooked to the desired temperature. Celebrated Valentine's Day at Marzano this year. Staff are very friendly, provided nice wine recommendations. We ordered the grilled ribeye steak fries and the seafood pasta. My husband said the ribeye was not as tender but seasoned well. The pasta in my opinion needs a creamy sauce. We sat outside by a heater and if that's not enough to keep you warm they have blankets! There are not many choices, so that's why we chose the salad The pizza was good, not great The best thing was the spicy chicken meal I ordered. It wasn't blowing me away, good, but it was good. Alittle hard to eat because it was chicken on the bone in like an almost soup. So handling the chicken was messy and hot to touch. The veggie pasta meal my mom got . We came in around 8pm (they close at 9:30), and right away were greeted by a blonde waitress with her hair tied back. She seemed nice at first... until we asked if we could sit at a different table. She gave us the "we're closing that section" line, then said the booth was for four or more, and when we politely asked about another nearby table, she rolled her eyes and muttered "sure, why not" with the kind of tone you don't forget. We ended up sitting where she originally suggested (per my partner's request), and then she came back to pour water poured my boyfriend's just fine, but when it came to mine, she poured all over my hand. I've worked in the service industry. That's not a slip-up. That's passive aggression with a splash of ice water. Thankfully, Sarah stepped in to save the evening. She was warm, friendly, helpful, and treated us like we actually mattered. She helped us with cocktails and dinner, and continued to check in with kindness and professionalism. She's the reason this review has three stars instead of one. I'm not sure what the first server's issue was a bad day, end of shift, or maybe just not a fan of me, but it was not okay. I'm glad we stayed, but I genuinely hope management is aware of the contrast between the two servers, because it was night and day. read more

We found a new favorite the Alaskan True Cod, my spouse raved about it, and said it was the best fish dish he had ever had. I add tasting notes, but he gobbled it up so fast he forgot to let me try it - guess I'll have to order my own next time. A tried and true fan favorite is the Fig Pizza, perfect wood fired crust, lots of fig that pairs perfectly with a glass of red wine. Servers are excellent even when they are being rained on. Marzano has always been pretty highly regarded. From my former transbay work commute down Park Blvd. there was always a line of customers waiting for it to open at 5pm so I knew everyday they got a crowd. I came around 6pm on a random Tuesday in mid-November and it was about half-filled. To my surprise, we had to sit outside as we had no reservations. Now I know why there's always people eating outside. I feel that we could have sat inside since I checked online and they had open table reservations just 30 min. later at 6:30 but whatever, the gf was craving pasta and BellaNico is closed Tuesdays. Our appetizers were both delicious, Burrata with persimmon, beautifully plated and the fried squash rings. They had a light crunchy tempura batter and creamy soft interior, 5 stars just for that dish alone. Really unique and well made. If you like olives, order them for $6,very flavorful, meaty, and covered with chilis. Main courses: Butternut squash pizza was very good, it's a seasonal one so definitely try it if you see on the menu. Crispy coppa, baby kale, and manchego cheese. Strangely I wasn't a fan of the cheese sprinkled on top but it didn't hurt the dish too much. Great crust and perfectly for dipping into my gf's spaghetti and meatballs. I'm not a huge pasta fan so can't speak much to it, but it has plenty of sauce and the gf liked it, good enough for me. Luckily I did try plenty of the meatballs, of which they give 4 big ones. Lots of meat compared to the spaghetti, this dish is built for some bread to sop it up. Also luckily, we requested some but it was flat bread aka a non-porous one for the sauce. In reality, probably a 4.5 but round up since the service is spot on. read more

Marzano keeps a simple menu, changing regularly to highlight seasonal vegetables and cocktails, and then executing those few dishes at a very high level. I used to be a huge Marzano fan - we were regulars when our kids were liand got the chopped salad every single time. Tonight, after a long time not having eaten there, I popped in to get one to go. Sorely disappointed in what I brought home. For $16, I got mostly chopped romaine hearts and large pieces of salami. I counted three tiny pieces of broccoli, a few slivers of snap pea, hardly any garbanzo beans, and zero sunflower seeds. This was my second visit to Marzano this summer. Previously I visited and sat on the patio with my parents who were visiting. The service was sloppy at the time, food was good. This visit was the hubs and I and we sat inside. Treated warmly, accommodated, he liked the vibe inside. We had seen Check Please! and had wanted to try the octopus. It was underwhelming for sure. Good flavors but the octopus was chopped prior (?) to cooking possibly and was tough and very tiny amounts - felt skimpy. Chopped salad was nice, lots of the things, good flavor. The pizza - I'm not able to eat much cheese so we ordered the vegan but added sausage. I have very mixed reviews about this - the crust was chewy and perfect but the middle was really soggy. And as far as cheese goes, were they afraid to break the bank?? A couple sprinkles - again, felt stingy. Maybe they are trying not to raise prices so instead cut from food costs? And why was it so soggy!? Final pot de creme was delicious. Cocktails - I had a martini - not to hard to mess up Hubs had specialty cocktail the Cubano - 3 stars. The wine list leans Italian with some interesting selections- good for me but since he doesn't drink much I just had a glass - it was a nice vermentino. Previously we had a few bottles and were able to try more off beat selections - this adds stars in my book. Service was easy. Felt taken care of this time.
