So after 5 months, I was accepted into the UGM familia…read more. Overly excited walking thru the front door, I stuck out my hand to greet the young woman who was to explain the rules to me. She seemed reluctant to shake my hand. She informed me she must throw all my clothing in the dryer for 20 minutes. Excitement dissipating.. The inside appeared sterile at first glance, and it was. Besides the ladies in program, it would have been a nominal affair at best. Enter my case manager, Kim, who sparked up my stay at Hope Place with her variety of wardrobe, open ears and heart. Goldyn, my singing, talking, dancing, acting roommate. A very talented female who FORCED ME TO HAVE FUN. ..and a 100 other equally brilliant fembots and their children who came and went during my tour de force via Hope Place. Enhancing my world with their courage, flare and flavor. Never to be forgotten. What a lovely experience, that I'm glad is over. I came terms with who Jesus was, I rediscovered how wonderfully valuable my life is and ultimately how I gotta live it fantastically myself. Thank you UGM for a warm rewarding hug and hood wink.

I contacted Elisabeth, who is the volunteer coordinator and she made it all so easy! She was responsive, helpful, and found out the answers to the many questions I asked her. When we got to the shelter, the staff were truly welcoming and showed me all that I needed to know. I loved our experience with the children and have signed up to volunteer again.

Great things are brewing…read more.. I recently stopped into the Goodwill flagship store and spotted something really special tucked way back in the corner, almost out of sight. I normally never even walk that direction. Fulcrum Coffee Roasters and Evergreen Goodwill are partnering on a barista training program and café space right inside the store. Honestly, it was exciting to actually see one of the training programs in action and connect the dots between donations, shopping at Goodwill, and where that support is going. Real people learning real job skills right there in front of you. This deserves to be more up front where people can see it and celebrate it.

Pink tags were 1/2 off and unlike the stores in Reno, they don't take pink tags off the racks before the sale! There are fitting rooms, and it's all very clean and organized. This is a well-oiled machine here. Home goods side, with furniture, and for that alone I wish I had a UHAUL truck backed up. My cousin spent $150 and I spent about $75 and we spent about 3 hours there. Easily could have spent all day, but it was a thrifting kind of day, so we hit several stores the same day. Took away a star because they don't allow you to use their restrooms anymore. We would have spent more time and money, but they closed their bathrooms to the public (stupid).

Basic food is provided, and then you are sent to shelters around downtown Seattle. Homeless people can't just walk in however. They must either have been there the night before, or gotten referred by DESC @ 3rd & Yesler, or Bread of Life @ 1st and Main. Limited number of referrals from these sources can mean it's tough to get in to Nightwatch. Once there, you will be fed. Meals are prepared by volunteers, so the quality and variety can vary from night to night. But it is free, and served with a smile. Food service usually ends by 10:00 pm. Shelters are currently for single men and women. No family shelter is currently available. If you need more information, try calling the office daytimes @ (206) 323-4359. Their night phone is (206) 329-2099. There are no requirements for people getting help, other than cooperation. They treat you fairly. Don't show up before 9:00 pm because Nightwatch doesn't allow a line to develop before then.

Our parish (Church of the Ascension, Seattle) has supported Nightwatch in many ways, including the feeding program, financial donations, and even a clergyman who walked the neighborhood at night with the director of Nightwatch, I believe. This program provides help for the homeless without stuffing ideology down their throats. It treats all people with respect and dignity, and it provides an extremely organized and safe environment for guests and volunteers. One bittersweet moment for me was when a young man jumped up from his table, shouted my name, and ran up to me saying, "It's me, Bobby!" He was about 26 and had been one of my wonderful 4th grade students. Fortunately he was basically doing okay but was at the moment facing hard times. Nightwatch was a lifeline for him as he was working on getting new employment. We hugged, caught up on life, and I was reassured that he was going to be okay, thanks to such a great program.
