Everyone is organized and help you in any way they can. You are always greeted with a smile and treated respectfully. I really like the fact that volunteers will make suggestions and tell you about the variety of food items available. After you select your groceries they quickly bag them up for you and even help you out to your car. Honestly, their customer service is what every grocery store wishes they could be. I wish I could give more than 5 stars.

When I got in, it was worse than a high-school cafeteria. I started at the beginning of the "line" and found bins marked with maximum quantities to take out. Four potatoes. Three carrots. One onion. One bunch cilantro. One beet (blech!). One bag stale popcorn. One loaf of ROCK hard leftover bread from a local bakery. I fracture a front tooth on that! Everything here looked like old stock from the local grocery produce department. I looked around, and on that day they were out of just about everything. Dairy, meat, eggs, sugar, flour--even macaroni and cheese. Nothing worth having. It was like going through a food line in Russia collecting scraps. I don't care how little I have any more, will never, ever go through THAT morose experience again. Ever. And I hope you never have to, either. It is ROCK BOTTOM.

I don't get to volunteer much anymore, I definately had more time in high school and college, but…read morewhen I get a chance, I tend to find places which serve good causes. In Seattle, there are many that fall into that catagory, and this one stands out. Food banks are places which are more important than ever before. There are too many people in unfortuante situations. Either because of some circumstance which is out of their control, or for what ever reason, it becomes necessary to rely of the charity of others. I volunteered here, as part of Seattle Works. Like many food banks I have volunteered at, it's simple, have your energy up, a welcoming smile, and respect. This one serves tons of people, Wednesdays and Saturdays. They have two shifts, one in the morning and afternoon. If you come early, be prepaired to get to packing and sorting. Donations come from local groceries and neighborhood residents. People line up, come in, get food items, and are on their way. Simple. I always say, it's good to give back, and this place is a good way to giving back, even if you don't have money to give; give a little time, it's well worth it. Tip: There is limited parking, some just north of the location, and some 24 hours spots on the street across(south) from the fire station. Don't park at the fire station, they don't really appreciate cars blocking their station. Wear comfortable clothes, and good shoes, you'll be on your feet.

When I have volunteered, it has been on the Saturday morning shift, four long hours! Be prepared to stand for most of the time and for non-stop people coming through. Generally Seniors and the Disabled are in the first round of clients. It is nice that they are able to come through first without being hindered by a large crowd. This food bank generally has a great deal of fresh produce, meat and many donations from Whole Foods and other markets. It feels good passing out items that I know I don't spurge on for myself. I appreciate that the clients at the food bank can turn away items that they do not wish to take. It feels very humane that people are not put in a position that they must eat anything given to them just because they are in need. First off, the worker really seemed like he'd rather be anywhere else than working there. I received a big rack of drumsticks, several cans of tuna which I appreciated, but there was NOTHING fresh or green. The closest thing to a vegetable were the potatoes. I'm hoping this was an "off week" and not the usual for them. I waivered between 2 and 3 stars.

Founded in London, England year 1865 by Methodist minister William Booth and his bride/wife Catherine Mumford Booth. Glad to help the Seattle, Washington Corps of Salvation Army. Wow this place is awesome. Stopped by for 'training' for their Operation Front line volunteering…read moreprogram, which teaches families, parents, kids and teens of low income families how to cook nutritious and delicious meals on a budget. What a great idea! Instead of just giving out food, each class participant gets a great lesson in cooking and nutrition, then they get to help create a meal in class AND a bag of groceries to take home with them to practice. The people at training were great - nutrition majors, foodies, chefs all mingling in a philanthropic pow wow. The training was hands on and interactive, and I really like Solid's Ground's focus on diversity, equality, respect and education as a way to help the community. Super cool place!
