I give this place an extra star for the low low price and the great location. As far is a hotel goes - this place is barely a real hotel. But for me - I am waiting for an apartment to open up a few blocks away - so I will be here for about 10 days - and the price and location are both right. Settled on Wilson Street and Maryland smack dab in the midst of the newly refurbished downtown Glendale mall - The Maryland Hotel is walking distance from almost everything - including The Americana and the Galleria. That means it is only feet away from three movie complexes - comprising about 30 screens. If this were a nicer place they could triple the price just for the location - so - who minds the oid worn carpet - really. The rooms are dingy and furnished sparsely, with no TV and sporadic WiFi. It is an old fashioned place that maybe had its glory days in the 30s or 40s. (or even much earlier). That said - the lights work, the water runs, the windows open, and there is an elevator (sort of). The front desk is manned from about 9 AM until 10 PM. Guests require a key to enter the building. This hotel has no parking lot. NOTE: It costs about 260 a week to stay here in a tiny room overlooking a roof - or 315 per week for a large room with 2 windows overlooking the city. I walked into this "hotel" (this is a very poor excuse for one) when I was searching for a place to make a reservation for a few days stay while my home was being painted. There was no one at the front desk... There was, however, an older, (fake?) blond woman sitting in a room behind the front desk. I could see she was using her cellphone. She looked up and saw me (we made eye contact). I stood there and waited for her to come out. Nothing. She looked at me up and down and stared at me. She went back to looking at her cellphone. A few minutes later, the SAME woman comes out of the same room and continues staring at me and said (sternly), "Who are you?!" I stated I was looking for a room for a few days. She looked at me up and down (again) and stated, "We don't have room for you, you go somewhere else!" I thought she might be having a bad day... From reading the reviews about this place, it sounds like a not so nice place to stay in. I did see a few decent looking people (hotel guests) walking up and down the (very dirty) carpeted stairs. Here's a tip: Customer service starts with the first person you interact with when you walk into an establishment. Looking a potential guest up and down, then staring at them and then going about your business, is not good customer service, which is what all establishments should aim for. If you are in Customer Service, you should be GRACIOUS! You should also SMILE and have a good if not GREAT attitude. No one wants to deal with a person who looks like they've been sucking on a sour lemon all day. Oh, and their "elevator" (I use quotes because it looks like it's the size of a broom closet and it also looks like it's a million years old) is Out of Service. Place is pretty affordable if you're on a budget but that's the only good thing. The elevator is scary and the rooms are vintage which isn't terrible. The first room I got the AC/ heater wasn't working so I asked to move. The second room was not much better ,the bathroom tiles were falling apart and could have been harmful. I would have asked to move again but front desk doesn't know what great customer service is. Just stay away from them and DONT accidentally smoke in the room. They must have cameras in the rooms because they banged on the door and kicked us out immediately. Keep in mind i was butt naked and to she still DEMANDED I get out asap. I'm not gonna lie, when I told my friend that I was spending $220 for a hotel room, he asked me if that was nightly or hourly. I had to point out weekly, at which point the phone line went dead. Maryland Hotel is definitely the last of a dying breed of hotels... small, simple accomodations, centrally located and family run. This is a no frills hotel. I mean, you're paying $25 a night. But my room was clean, the mattress was new, laundry facilities on premise and they offered free wifi which worked perfectly on the fourth floor. Water pressure was something of an issue, but otherwise it was fine. That said, as a single female, I was more nervous by the kinds of people who rent a room for a week at these rates than I was about the state of the hotel. I saw one elderly couple, who I think must have been in town from Yerevan, while all the other hotel patrons were single men, of varying age, but all of questionable background. I made sure to keep as small of a visible footprint as possible. That said, the two ladies who manage the hotel are kind enough. They run a clean ship and while their service isn't 4 star hospitality, it certainly was efficient and kind. read more

It doesn't matter how cheap they make this place, there is no excuse for charging any money for a stay here. This place can only justify itself for not being bulldozed to the ground as of yet is to transform it into a homeless shelter. The living conditions are horrendous. I will not discuss the terrible decor, inaccessible lobby, or the rude and I'll-mannered staff. Instead I will just say that the room is too small for even just one person, it is unsanitary and sponges the willingness to live from its visitors. Perhaps air conditioning can vent the room from the smell of despair that is so obviously trapped in the walls. What are the rumors that I've heard that it was just renovated? I can't imagine what a tragedy it would have been to experience the terror of a pre-renovation stay. I am amazed that a civilized country as the United States and a fairly evolved town as Glendale keeps this war-ravaged looking business afloat. This place may become a museum someday. The furniture already looks like it barely survived World War II. Do yourself a favor and do NOT stay here. read more

Dont rent here they have a nasty infestation issue and they are just covering it up with plastic on the beds but they are still able to bite you somehow. I have now 12 bumps its not worth the cheap stay. I will never stay here again or recommend a friend. There is something to be said about this wonderful establishment. It's a place for discretional meet ups and the staff is fantastic about looking the other way. I don't think a tourist or a person wanting to explore the LA area would stay here. It serves it's purpose well, they only take cash for a reason, amongst many other specific rules they have. They are very smart about business and time. The staff and cleaning personnel are absolutely friendly and polite, especially to weekly occupants. Bed bugs? Hardly! But what do you expect for a weekly rate of 2 bills or a nightly rate of 40$? ... I say a little bleach and aromatherapy candles and your straight. Just watch out for the narcs that pose as occupants. Keep to yourself, smile be polite and pay on time and your good to go. Lolo is divine. Epic place room 202 is the best, just saying! Everything at this hotel is old, from the phones to the elevators. I would date it to about the 1950's. it was sort of cool seeing all the out dated architecture. Decent sized room, small bed, large walk in closet, and most importantly no TV. They do have wifi tho. It was only $44 for one night. I'm not too picky so it worked out. read more

The Maryland Hotel is a wonderful vintage boutique Hotel. The entire staff is incredibly professional and make your experience as comforting as they can make it for you. The maid service is extremely focused and detail oriented in their cohesive style of cleaning is very consistent. I am an artist and frequent this place and have stayed here months at a time. It's conveniently centered away from major LA hotspots and "The Americana" (The valley's version of the grove) is a 2minute walk from hotel. It has a Chicago-architecture vibe to it- as opposed to modern Swedish LA vibe. The lobby looks like a 1940's movie set and very reminiscent of DTLA's "Cecil Hotel". Good vibes all together. The front desk staff are the sweetest ladies and always want to get you the best price. LOLO is the best! Two Very Enthusiastic Thumbs UP!! read more

Dear Company Owner, My name is John. Over the past few weeks prior to January 1st, 2013, I have looked carefully at your reviews on Tripadvisor, Yelp, as well as from general Google searching. In addition I have called the Maryland Hotel inquiring about general information, reservations, prices, and so forth. A group of 5 individuals, including me, have concluded that we would like to stay at your hotel for one night on December 31st and check out on January 1st of 2013. I spoke to a lady by the name of Lolo whom was very helpful with arranging for two rooms as well as explaining the reservation process informing us that calling one day before the reservation date will ensure a room. Therefore we reserved two rooms and received verbal confirmation from Lolo that two rooms are ready for check in and will be expecting our presence before 11pm on December 31st. Upon arrival around 6:30pm, our group approached a different employee that informed us that there was no reservation, no names, no numbers, and that everything was already booked for that night. I was then informed by this different employee that they do NOT do reservations and that it is a first come first serve basis. Our group was left without a room on New Years Eve AFTER TRAVELING for over an hour to your location! Thankfully our group was able to find a hotel just outside of town, however, the new location did impair our transportation plans as well as additional stress among the group, traffic, and additional fees from overnight parking in a nearby structure. Rather than walking to our New Years Eve destination, our driver had to make multiple trips to and from the other hotel. I would like to conclude that I have followed up with Lolo regarding the situation from that evening. She was very polite in handling the manner as well as assuring that the next time we make a plan for the Maryland Hotel, she will take care of it personally. Unfortunately, I will not be coming back. As the owner of the company, you need to be sure all employees are educated with the same policy and guidlines regarding reservations. The resulting reactions among all of us does not compare to any other customer concerns we have ever encountered. We appreciate Lolo's care for her guests, but the same must be practiced by the rest of your staff! A free room will not serve as appropriate compensation for the damages. I will not take legal action. However I will share with the rest. Let this be a reminder to you, owner of the company, that these sort of inconsistencies at the Maryland Hotel are not only harmful to your business, but are especially harmful to potential guests as well. This place discriminates against Service Animals! I rented a room from them and provided them with all of the documents that the two friendly ladies requested and everything was fine UNTIL..... the BULLY Manager/Owner yelled at them and had them call me to tell me that me and my Service Dog were NOT welcome! Police were called and now they are going to hear from my Attorney!.....As far as the place goes, there are NO televisions, NO soap, NO hair dryer, NO shampoo, etc. The hallway carpets are well worn and torn. NO A/C, NO heater. A super old dingy microwave in the creepy laundry area, and $4 parking a day next door. AVOID this place! read more

This place isn't as bad as some of the reviews suggest. I stayed here for 3 weeks and I never had any problems with the place. Yeah there were a few stains on the carpets. There were always towels and toiletries and staff did come once and shampoo the carpets but the stains remained. I never had trouble with anyone else that stayed here but you should just expect to ignore the elevator, it's slow slow slow. Also it's pretty cool that they have an old switchboard behind the desk, straight out of mad men. Wifi is crazy spotty but when it works, it works. Luckily I didn't have bed bugs, but I've seen a few reviews that said they did - glad I didn't have that experience. read more

I do not recommend this place. Two words... BED BUGS! If you are looking for a monthly place don't even bother. They require you to move out for 48 hours which completely makes it more expensive! People smoke in non smoking rooms, they don't clean your rooms thoroughly, front desk woman that works Mon and Tues mornings is a HORRIBLE WOMAN and harrasses guests all the time. Super Old-school hotel. I felt like i was in a movie when i stayed here. An old Nostalgic movie. What they lack in WIFI (go to Urartu's down the street) they make up for with friendliness. It's in a great location in the middle of Glendale where you can pretty much walk to the movies, walk to the bars/restaurants/malls, and almost walk to get groceries (Target and Ralphs are just far enough you'd probably rather get a cab). It's right next to a few metro bus lines that will get you to downtown LA(92), or Hollywood(181,180,780) within an hour. It's a very quiet place you can sleep for sure. They give you metal keys for both the hotel and your room. The rooms have big closets. No bugs in sight. The staff is very accommodating. I just want to hug 'em. read more

Hi, this is Zach. I wanted to post a review of my experience at the Maryland Hotel at 202 East Wilson Ave, Glendale, CA 91206. I will be honest, this is the worst hotel I've ever been to. I'll explain: Last Tuesday night at 10pm (8/20/13), I had a rude encounter from an employee named Suzy. She went to my door and the very first words that came out of her mouth are,"You need to get out of the room right now." Maybe you can see how frustrated I was with this place. In the middle of the night, they switched me to another room because they said "there was a problem with the bathroom" in my old room. They wanted me to move out of the room that night, so some maintenance worker can come in the room sometime early the following morning to fix it. I know, this sounds absolutely absurd. There were only four other rooms I could choose that night, and they were all worse than my previous room. None of the lights really worked, all the rooms were smaller, most rooms reeked with cigarette smoke, and all of them had issues with the toilet. The room that I ended up choosing had the toilet falling apart, literally, downward. None of the employees were helpful at all, they thought that this type of thing was acceptable. I had to stay two more nights because of my commitment to work, and things never got better. Basically, I had to pay the same amount I paid for my first room as well as my second room, which was completely worse. I never got reimbursed for paying the $47 dollars I paid for the crappy second room. The manager at the hotel is really the worst I have seen at any hotel. He refused to speak with me, even when I wrote out a complaint to him. I arranged a time through his employees to talk about this situation on Wednesday night, which he didn't show up to. He didn't show up Thursday night, and refused to show up Friday afternoon. The man hides behind his employees, neglecting his responsibility as a professional manager. I never got a $5 refund and I was never given an apology. I know, it makes me sick too. What a complete dump. I would not recommend this hotel in any situation, not even a last resort. Don't let the $42-$47 deal fool you, they will try and cheat you. Don't let them trick you, please choose another hotel. Don't make the mistake I did with these people. I've stayed in upper end hotels to average hotels. Had a few unlucky airbnb stays that were less than promised. For the location, $360-$400 plus/wk is very reasonable. Great promos, very clean room, hardwoods in ours! Of course, not a 5 star hotel. However, reasons we booked were location, price & strict non-smoking policy. I was glad to read here they removed a guest who was smoking, however, instituting fees is also an idea to deter! Marriot won't tolerate smoking & charges fees for having to clean a smoke filled room. I went to front desk 2X about it (we have family members with sensitivity), one immediately went to handle it, the other, quite curt, distinct attitude or indifference, citing, "Yeah, we already told them". The maid asked me to mention room # it was to the front desk bec when I'd returned the entire hallway was filled with it & it immediately triggered a respiratory reaction in me. The front desk person came off as though I was the nuisance for asking! Noting my concerns, as a paying customer, she even asked which room it was with attitude to me. A few side eye rolls at me, frustrated responses & unkind tone, I was just dumbfounded bec the smoker was going at it in real time (& daily). I expected she would have at least gotten up to check it out like another nice employee did. But she just swatted me off with her hand. I asked on my way out, if we should tell when it occurs, if penalties.. I was told, "No. Sometimes, we have a penalty...(??), but this customer paid, so nothing can be done. They have to check out. We can't see it, we have to see it...so tell us... when you actually see them doing it". Well I would say, everyone else staying there are also paying customers-I had just dropped close to $400 & had for multiple weeks. Her response was incredibly disappointing to me, uncaring, as though she was being bothered. Bad reflection on this business. I've stayed in many hotels-I have to say, that interaction was some of the worst customer service I ever experienced...Why? I also made a suggestion that could've been relayed to the owners as a customer giving feedback. If you don't pay to renew your room by 11am, you pay a $12.50 late fee. ($3 daily fee or $12.50 weekly fee, in this case...neither breaking the bank). The room plus late fee must be paid by 1pm or room price doubles...but then she says they take a lunch from 12:30-1:30pm. I said, "this doesn't really make sense" & she became visibly bothered by my confusion. Just like anywhere, if there is any delay, whether traffic or bank transfers, a customer has a right to pay the late fee they ask. She literally became visibly frustrated at my asking about the times, while I made a reasonable suggestion there. It's a guest's choice to pay $3 or $12. I was shocked & disappointed by her reaction to raising her voice, waving her hand and her neck, declaring I "Pay before 11! ...or the night before!" Well, funds were being transferred from a business account so Sunday night wasn't feasible & there was a brief processing delay Monday morning BUT I had no problem paying $12 late fee & although she allowed a 1 time courtesy in waiving it...which I appreciated, I made it clear I could arrive b4 1pm (in accordance to their policy). It was then she informed me, no one would even be there because they must take lunch at 12:30-1:30pm. Therefore, even if you arrive before 1pm as their own policy states...no one is present for 30 mins to an hour to take payment (cash only). Most guests would agree, a 1pm cut off is nonsensical. Just move official policy cut off time to 12:30pm or just after 1:30-2 when front desk staff is actually there. Unreasonable concern? If there is a cutoff time with a late fee, it should be moved to when front desk returns from lunch or instituted to cut off before they leave for lunch, otherwise, if we arrive to pay, NO ONE is there within time frame THEY alloted-that is NOT the fault of the customer. In any hotel like the Marriot, Holiday Inn, etc., front desk staff are welcoming to suggestions & expected to be cordial to customers no matter what race, what gender or status. A mere suggestion to owners was met with such anxious frustration & attitude-it put me off. None of the other front desk personnel ladies behave in such a way. The same front desk person became upset with me, raised her voice saying she was not the owner and that I just need to do this & that (not ask that question about a particular policy)-she told me the 1pm policy is NOT there to make it convenient for the customer. However paying by a certain time (the same exact time they're out to lunch was odd to me) I apologized for "bothering her" which I should not have to do. It was after that I inquired about the smoker & the annoyed stature she had, continued in a very apparent manner. Totally came off like, "Please, just get out of my face & stop bugging me!" I've stayed here a couple of times over the past few years, and will do again. The prices are low, folks, because this is basically a youth hostel, or was. There are some folks who actually live here as well. It's comfortable enough, the rooms have been redone. It could still use some sprucing up with the carpeting throughout, but the room and linens are always clean as is the bathroom. Only one problem I had was that the detergent they used on the sheets made me itch badly, but they rewashed and changed the sheets for me, so that was nice. The front desk staff are always cordial and accommodating. I happen to like the funky European atmosphere and the living room in the lobby. Quaint and charming. There's a parking lot nearby where you pay via a dropoff system. Location and price can't be beat. It's a good tradeoff. read more

I've stayed at the Maryland twice for a week at a time, but only out of desperation and not being able to afford anything better. I paid $181 for a week the first time, and $200 this time. The rooms are tiny and feel cramped, the bathrooms are especially tiny, with no tub and poor water pressure in the shower. The tacky blinds barely block out any light, and therefore the room is flooded with light come sunrise. There's no AC, just a slow ceiling fan. I had to bring my own fan and eye covers to sleep. The carpets are dirty, the bed is tiny, with a hard, uncomfortable mattress. The carpets are stained and everything looks old and faded. The cleaning lady comes around 8 am, and will sometimes knock even when I had the "Do not disturb" sign up. I had to ask the front desk lady to tell them to stop knocking that early, because I sleep in. Most of the staff is polite, but there is one rude lady there. When I was checking out at about 11:52 am, she told me "Check out time is noon. You should check out earlier" in a very rude way. I told her "It isn't noon yet" and she said "Oh, 8 minutes before!" They also told me they'd give me a wake up call after I requested one, and they didn't do it. The free wifi there is extremely slow and spotty. I don't know whether to cry or laugh. I am absolutely stumped and amazed by this piece of American history. OK, first the pros- its cheap, $44 a night in Glendale and clean rooms. The room I was in had hardwood floors and definitely cleaner than the carpets in many expensive hotels. On a side note I never walk barefoot on a hotel carpet. But I have run out of the pros, and must touch on the cons. The bathroom was kind of dinky, with cracked and chipped tub and a tiny sink. Worst of all, no soaps or shampoo, and the towels.. well suffice it to say I chose to forgo a bath and brushed my teeth in office the next day. Part of my hesitation in using the towels was the prominent warning at check-in "TOWELS ARE PROVIDED FOR BATH ONLY. DO NOT USE IT FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE". WTF? The bed linens were clean but well used. And the telephone switch board behind the counter, my of my, all those born in the 50s might remember having seen the kind where you pull out a cable and plug it in to transfer calls. I believe the only other model in existence is at the Smithsonian. But at the prices they charge, I don't think we could go any better. Would I go back again- no, but then again if budget is the only consideration, then I would stay here. Good value for money but I have my preferences, and this is not one of them. read more
