I heard somebody the other day talking about Maryland Fried Chicken and said since the new owners changed the recipe the place is not good. That's the farthest thing from the truth. They opened in 1968. My mom started taking me there in 1978 when I was 10 years old, we lived down the street and I've been eating there ever since and I'm almost 60 years old the same recipe for all those years, they've never changed it. Everything is from scratch. They break the chickens down from whole chickens by hand and they do all the work by hand they don't buy it premade all that chicken is done by hand. It's the best chicken I've ever had and I've eaten in a lot of places and I still eat there till this day and the family that owns it now has owned it for a while and they never changed the recipe. I recommend it to everybody and I buy large orders from there all the time. I'm also a fan of their chicken gizzards so for all those haters that say they've changed they haven't and I recommended to everybody me and my friends my family and everybody I know gets our chicken from there. We stopped here as we were in the area. I'd driven by this place so often, finally decided to try it for lunch. Most of the tables were turned upside down, but there were two open so we ate inside. Masks were required to enter and while ordering at the counter. While there, they did a ton of takeout business. Our food, btw, was packed to go so we had to ask for ketchup, sauce, napkins, straws, etc. We ordered a 3 piece white chicken combo plus a side of chicken livers. The livers were my favorite part of the meal, actually. The three piece fried and breaded chicken were one breast piece, one wing, and one "pulley" (The top part of the chicken breast). I didn't care for the wing, but the white meat on the other two pieces was pretty good. In addition to the chicken, there were a lot of crinkle cut fries -- they were okay -- and some sweet coleslaw. Everything was packed together in a box. I'm glad we went and satisfied my curiosity. Now i know what to order next time. read more

This isn't your ordinary fried chicken chicken but broasted; it's juicier and more flavorful than the traditional method of deep fryer. Epic lunch of a three piece meal. I had the white meat and two wings. Came with fries and coleslaw. The slaw was creamy with no sour aftertaste, definitely house made. Fries were crispy but a commercial brand. Disappointed in the unavailability of mashed potatoes and gravy. Their machine is currently broken. Pretty busy for a late lunch on a Saturday. They must be out the door and around the corner during the week. Brought home a bucket to enjoy for the next several days. Don't let the basic decor scare you. Now don't get me wrong, this place has been serving up chicken for decades and for the most part, it gets positive reviews. The thing is it's not the old-school fried chicken I grew up eating. .5 star Atrocious. A few friends( who I no longer consider friends after this) told me about this place. Having risk my life walking 30 minutes around in the Treme projects of New Orleans just to get to Willie Maes, I consider myself a fried chicken enthusiast. Apparently there are a lot of these, mainly in Marlyand (duh), but this location has been there for 42 years and it sure looks it. For starters its catered to, less just say, the less fortunate. It's unappealing, dirty, had roaches on the floor and possible termite damage along with mold showing on the ceilings and baseboards. The chicken marinates under a heat lamp, much like your KFC or Popeyes. The only difference is those places are high traffic and the chicken more than likely doesn't sit for long periods of time. The sides are french fries (again heat lamp) and baked beans. Get this though, the beans are per-packaged and kept in the refrigerator. You are eating COLD baked beans. If that isn't disgusting I don't know what is. Now on to the real topic at hand, the chicken. While it wasn't the worst I ever had, I could immediately tell its low grade chicken probably purchased at a local Wal-Mart. The seasoning was ok, but again, it didn't stand out. If I had a blind fold on I'd probably think was just a bad day at KFC. Everything about this place is cheap, packaged and depressing. Utensils per-packaged, napkins, even the wet wipe they provided was dried out and frail. If you're on crack and desperate for fried chicken and just happen to be near Pompano, this may be your spot. read more

I heard good things about Maryland Fried Chicken so I was anxious to try it. It appears that each location is individually owned but I figured that they would all taste the same. For the companies sake I hope that they don't. If I were from Maryland I would take extreme offense to this place because its giving you a bad rep. Walking into the place makes you wonder what part of the country you are in. How can the beach be blocks away but after entering the location you would think you're in New Mexico or even Mexico. I was surprised that I didn't see sitting down Napoleon, Uncle Rico, and Kip. Everything is old and supposedly this location has been around for 40 years. I guess things were made to last better 40 years ago because I am positive everything in there from the tables, to heat lamps, to who knows whats in the back has lasted since the grand opening. When I walked in I took a quick glimpse around and kept my eyes off of the floor because i didn't want to see what was on the floor or crawling on it. I got my food to go but if I had to sit down and eat I would have chosen the parking lot. If I had eaten only the chicken at a friends house not knowing what the actual place looked like I would probably rate it 2,5 stars top. The chicken itself is good and not nearly as greasy as KFC or similar places. Not just for me, I ordered the 15 piece and convinced the cashier to throw in an extra piece because its more sensible to have 4 wings, thighs, drumsticks, and breast. But enough with the compliments, as for everything else, the rating drops to 1 and below. The sides are straight disrespect to normal paying customers who know what a decent meal is.They may be acceptable to the Javiar Bardem No Country for Old Men looking people that frequent the location but for normal folks its unacceptable. There's fries, cole slow, mac and cheese cole slaw, and beans. Each one is stored in the refrigerator so who knows how long ago they've been made. My guess once a month and then frozen. Been to the Orlando location and loved the service. This location on sample can't say the same. Was charged for hot sauce, the fries were almost burnt/ disgusting. They served the baked beans cold even though I ask for them to be heated. When I asked for honey they started speaking in a foreign language and started laughing which was very rude. I have been looking for a good fried chicken joint for a while. Based on some of my friend's' recommendation I decided to give it a try and it didn't disappoint to say the least. Full disclosure, it is a small chicken joint so I must judge it for what it is. Yet to my surprise, the quality of food was excellent. I got to chat with the owner who was very kind, (he refused to rise the price to cover extra expenses and me being a finance guy had to give him my two cents about cash flow and commodity inflation...) and he was nice enough to give me a tour of the prep area. First of all, all chicken and spices he uses are kosher!!! The chicken is brained for 12 hours before thinly breaded. There is hardly any fat under the skin, I had wings and a thigh, they were cook to perfection, light and crispy outside and tender juicy inside. Unlikely chain fried chicken restaurants, The meat is not greasy at all. They don't leave with the feeling of regret after eating them! When I lived in Orlando in the late 70' into the 80's, I ate Maryland Fired Chicken quite often. It is a unique recipe that isn't overly greasy like many other chicken chain recipes. I even got to know the originator of MFC, Al Constantine, who took me into the kitchen of one of his Orlando MFC's and showed me around. He also told me to visit his brother Angel's store on Highway 50 and ask him to show me his kitchen, which I did. I learned form both Al and Angel that the main secret to the unique flavor of MFC is that it is deep fried in peanut oil - yes, expensive, but the key to its unique, delicious flavor. Anyway, I hadn't eaten MFC since the late 80's, and when I discovered on the internet that there was a unit in Pompano, I wanted to eat some today. What a major letdown! I got into the restaurant about 2:30 on Saturday. I ordered a 3 piece dinner with fries and cole slaw. The fries and slaw were both excellent, but the chicken sucked! It was almost bone dry, and it was mostly flavorless. It makes me wonder if this unit chooses to use cheaper shortening instead of the expensive peanut oil to fry the chicken in. Anyway, after not eating the real MFC since 1986, I thought I would finally get to eat this delectable treat in Pompano today. WRONG! Screwed again by a very bad batch of chicken. If I make it over to Orlando before long, I'll try some again. Hopefully, the chicken will be the original recipe that MFC founder Al Constantine used when I ate it in Orlando 30+ years ago. read more
