After a disappointing experience at another popular deauxnut spot, we tried Mary Lee's and couldn't have been more pleased! The counter servers are delightful, and the doughnuts are out of this world. We always compare places by their glazed. For Mary Lee's, think Krispy Kreme, but better. I know!!! It's almost a travesty to say such things but the glazed doughnut at Mary Lee's doesn't just completely melt like Krispy Kreme, so you actually get some substance. You get that little initial crunch from the glaze and the bite from the yeasty doughnut. Even day old, they're still delicious! Look, skip the hype at the other place and go get some just good old-fashioned hand fried goodies from Mary Lee!

Got the urge to satisfy your sweet tooth? Mary Lee on Coursey is the place to go for your sugar fix. You can't go wrong with their simple glazed donuts, they are soft and savory, and the sweetness is just right and not doughy at all. One caveat, don't expect to come in and "OCCUPY" the place, it's rather small good enough for take out only. No dine-in, but they do have drive-through. Come get you some before the Baton Rouge Five-O come running and OCCUPY the place.

Whenever I go to WalMart on Coursey I just have to to stop and grab a dozen. This place has by far THEE BEST customer service in Baton Rouge. When you walk in the door every employee stops and greets you with a smile. The kolaches are bomb too!

Having thought I've eaten through most donut shops in BR, I was surprised to learn the existence of…read moreCrispy Donut, which has supposedly been around for the better part of the last two decades. Located along Highland Road just outside of the LSU campus, this Asian-owned biz has been hiding behind a popular Chevron gas. station. It's not much to look at from the outside, but fans of donuts and kolaches will be able to enjoy something here. The inside is quiet and has limited counter seating and goes heavy on the LSU decor. It feels like a cafe that is dated but still hasn't finished the renovation. I imagine the idea is to pump some gas and get a donut, which has a staple format for so many BR peeps. The menu will always elicit a double take from me, with its awkward placement of numbers and the fact the stickers are so large that they had to abbreviate kolache to "kolach" and jalapeño to jalap. What's not condensed is those prices, which show nearly $40 for a dozen boudin kolaches and $12-20 for a dozen donuts. The breakfast croissants are $44 for a dozen, which just feels very steep. If a donut maximizes the taste, then the value is sometimes justified. However, trying their glazed, sprinkled, cake, fritters, and chocolate donuts, I can't say they're exceptional. The jalapeño kolaches and boudin kolaches were solid, but I'm not likely to order them again. The fact they still have Yoohoo in the fridge, is a nostalgic throwback I can appreciate. The owner is a sweet Cambodian man and is welcoming for every customer. Any attempts to use a credit card will incur a 50 cent surcharge for any purchases less than $5. Parking is limited to the gas station spots, but it's never crowded enough in here to be an issue. Lastly, every pastry shop is guilty of this, but the mini flies stuck inside of the display case is a massive turn off. ___________ (#1) Thank you, Yelp app.
