Unassuming but amazing spot to pick up Japanese deli items. I live pretty far from Georgetown, but pro-tip if you are nearby from Costco - I would highly recommend checking out this place. First, the sashimi, sushi, and bento items are already super reasonably priced. But second, if you come towards the end of the day (I did Monday close to 5 PM) they discount it (mine was 50% off). That is just an absolute steal for Seattle prices. The food itself is high quality for the price. The bento items lean a little sweet, but it satisfies that craving for a very quick grab and go meal. There's a parking lot with a decent number of spaces (~ 10? maybe more?). They have a pretty extensive rice cracker selection, if that's your thing. And some yummy looking refrigerated mochi, pan, and other pre-packaged snack and dessert items. And a couple of your standard Asian staples, like tofu, dried ingredients, etc that you'd expect from a small Japanese grocer. Gotta update my review now that I was able to make it before they close the kitchen and run out of food lol Wide selection of DELICIOUS bentos and sushi. The sushi looked fresh and the cooked (packed) lunches are replenished until their kitchen closes at 2pm. I'm stuck with the cooked and veggie rolls (pregnant) but gotta say - the aburi seared salmon was amazing. Not to mention the prices for these made me and my wallet happy. A hidden gem in Georgetown. Maruta Shoten is a small Japanese grocery store, which in of itself isn't unique. But I come here for the in-house deli, which makes for a great takeout lunch. The Chinese food is a smart play, specifically the combo plate. Get you some orange chicken, fried rice and chow mein. Make sure to bring home an egg roll or two. These are similar in style to those made in New York and so tasty. Other fried items such as the croquette and karaage are also fantastic. The sushi is good compared to mass market options, but I'd say it falls a little short for a Japanese market. The rice leaves a strong impression of vinegar, which makes items like the chirashi and california rolls less enjoyable for me. Recommended for locals. read more

Just came back from a trip with my mom to Maruta and she loves that nearly all of the Japanese stuff she wants is available here. Being 90+ it's not overwhelming for her to navigate like bigger stores. Pricing is always fair. If you don't like crowds - avoid the lunch hour as the deli gets a really good lunch crowd. There's a good reason for that though - tasty hot food to go is on the menu. Small assortment of sashimi to choose from - I always make sure to grab some ikura (salmon eggs) to take home for a treat. Plenty of pre-made bento goodies in the case so it's handy for grab and go. Friendly help is available if needed. 100% recommended. read more

This is a small market, especially compared to Uwajimaya, but it has a great selection. The sushi options are wonderful and cheap, and they go on clearance in the afternoon, I think around 5. They also have a hot foods section with some fried options, rice, etc. The market portion has a great variety of snacks, both savory and sweet. There's also some groceries in the back, produce, drinks, and frozen options. I used to come here at least once a week when I lived nearby and I miss it so much. I've driven past this store several times and I've finally decided to check it out for the first time after a shopping session at Costco. This place has good to-go sushi and hot items. The sushi is certainly fresh, and doesn't have that cheap-and-has-been-sitting-out-all-week appearance and taste that you'd find in big name grocery stores. Their fried items look hot off the fryer, their fried chicken is crunchy and nicely seasoned; it doesn't have that recycled frying oil taste to it. My wife had ordered a three item plate with fried rice, marinated chicken and beef & broccoli and felt it was a bland combo plate; I'd suggest finding other alternative restaurants around the area. This place has some interesting snacks and fermented items. I had opted to get natto which is fermented soybeans; I've heard of the many benefits of consuming it so i bought a three pack, I plan on visiting this place again for more natto. I saw my friend posted on his fb about this place, so I came by today to check it out. There was plenty of parking, which is always a big plus when I drive to Seattle. The value of the food got my interest. So today I got katsudon, rainbow roll, salmon sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, tempura Soba, Washington roll and assorted sushi. For deli food, I think all the food were ok, I would not expect quality on par with a Japanese restaurant. Their sushi were better than the qfc and safeway ones, the rice made all the difference. Their katsudon was from the kitchen, which took about 10 mins. For $7.95, it's decent, katsu was a little dry, but basically the lowest cost to get a katsudon anywhere. Soba was a little dry and stiff, probably been in the fridge for a while, but the sauce was good. My favorite is their sashimi, for the price, it was a generous portion, which was very fresh. For a deli, I did not have much expectation for their service. They were just there to work and do their job, but if their service is better, I'd give them a 5 star. Overall value and quality was good. I will come back if I am around the area and get their sashimi. read more

I've been a long time customer of Maruta's deli and Japanese food items. Ever since they changed management last year, there deli foods has been disappointing. Their karaage chicken tasted like it was fried with old oil, the sushi plates were not freshly made (day old?) and my worst complaint would be the false advertising of the fresh mochi during the few days before New Years. They had advertised the store would open early 8am instead of their normal 10am to accommodate all the customers who wanted mochi. There were long wait lines for mochi. I waited one hour and others waited longer. Finally, I made an order to pick it up later but before they wouldn't take any orders. Needless to say there were disappointed seniors who drove from very far away. They ended up buying the pre cut packaged mochi rice cake...terrible! Hopefully next year, the manager will better plan for the many customers who want fresh mochi. There is no other place to buy it unless they make it themselves. My advice is to hire more staff to make the mochi (there were only 2 extra guys specifically to make mochi). The demand for mochi this year has never been so high. Last year Maruta used to have 4-6 mochi to a pack sitting on the counter for customers to buy! In addition, the New Year Oseji bento was too expensive. I bought a few of the side dishes like the kombu, black beans which had a terrible sticky, salty texture. $4 for these tiny packages! Otherwise, Maruta's grocery selections are very good. I like the small "mom and pop" atmosphere and the deli staff are very friendly and helpful. read more

Yelp review Number 98 for 2020! Maruta Shoten is one of those places that falls under "seen it forever, driven past it, late to the party, finally checking it out" spots in 2020. This is located in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood with easy access to/from I-5 and has their own convenient parking lot. It is a popular Asian shop that has just about everything you could think of with a bit of Japanese-centric leanings. On my very first visit, it was terrific to get condiments and spices, but in smaller quantities so guaranteed to be used up in a timely fashion. But the awesome find was the hot deli located towards the far right from the main entrance. Sashimi, nigiri rolls, bento boxes, katsu bowls reminiscent of college days on the upper Ave, and hot Spam musubis that rivaled the ones from Foodland in Hawaii. There is a wide selection and at amazing prices. In the late afternoon, these are discounted. I made the mistake of stopping in during one of those timeframes and it was a no go with the crowding - polar opposite of appropriate social distancing. But with these deep discounts, you could easily have a meal rivaling some restaurants in the ID, Wallingford, or UDistrict. I remember being so hungry that I pulled off to the side and ate at Hat and Boots park a few blocks over. Utensils and napkins are provided at the checkout stand. This is one of the best kept secret in Georgetown I must say. It's a Japanese grocery store with amazing deli and grab-n-go selection. This place have been on my list forever and I finally had the chance to check it out and I only regret that I didn't come sooner. The hot food section only opens during lunch time so I definitely have to come back to check that out. We came around 4:15pm to look at what is left over from the lunch rush, and there was still a lot of selections: sushi rolls, nigiri, chinese food, potstickers, bento boxes, etc. The prices were actually very good for the quality you get. To our surprise, within minutes we arrive, they put the "50%" off sign for the grab'n'go selections and the prices were crazy low! and that was when the crowds started. We were able to grab: California roll (~$2.50) -- 6 HUGE pieces that were flavorful and one of the better california rolls I had Salmon/Tuna Poke Inari ($2.50) -- 2 HUGE pieces that was filled with sushi rice and fish, had a subtle sweetness from the tofu skin as well Bento box (~$4.50) -- a variety of rice, karage, beef, salmon, mac salad, egg, potato croquete, veggies, sweet bean Egg Foo Young (~$2) -- this is probably one of the best egg foo young I had, love the egg flavor. Definitely need to warm it up though :) Salmon and Shrimp nigiri (~$4) --- fresh, good quality The rice was super good in all these dishes. Love love this place. If only I lived closer. The prepared food is amazingly. Super tasty and reasonably priced. We went late in the day so there weren't much of others left. Even though selection was minimal, we were able to enjoy its goodness. The salmon bento had at least six other different sides that are all very tasty. The fried calamari that is cold is tasty too. Also picked up a vegetarian role, it was so good- mushroom spinach and maybe burdock or carrots in the role. I look forward to having an excuse to go back to Maruta. This is the kind of place I treasure- small business owners with unique offerings from their family and sharing it with the community. I found this great Japanese Supermarket using they Yelp Search tool. I arrived around 4 p.m. and checked out the relatively small but well-stocked grocery. I found a couple of nice bento's and proceeded to the checkout. The super nice Clerk told me that if I could wait 3 minutes that the bento's would be 50% off. Now it explains why the Bento area was busy. I went back and said limit 3 per person so of course I bought a third one. Sure enough three bento's for about ten bucks, such a bargain! Be sure to check out the sales on the flyer close to be entrance. The place is closed on Sundays but I'm looking forward to returning around 4 p.m. again to grab the half off bento's at 4:30! When you can't make it to Uwajimaya and you don't live as far south as Renton it's perfect. Something about this quaint store makes me feel at home. I knew they carried cold bentos and sushi but didn't realize till recently that they had hot food. My dad and I had the katsudon and the karage chicken don. The flavor was good and had the egg your familiar with these dishes. Was about a 10 min wait, my dad tonkatsu was a little tough but the chicken karage was moist and crunchy on the outside. Would probably stick with the Oyakudon and chicken karage next time they're only about $5.45 pretty great deal. It's also our go to place to get basic Japanese items if we don't feel like going to the bigger supermarkets- they sell Japanese condiments, seaweed, fish cakes, all kinds of rice, Japanese junk food, etc). Getting in here by car is a little tricky and cumbersome during rush hour but I haven't seen parking lot super ful except on weekends. Hours are limited. Prices are reasonable but keep an eye on prices of imported stuff. I honestly think it's a great find if you love Japanese food. They also give out coupons when you pay.
