The best udon I've had in my life! I highly recommend going here, it is vastly different in taste compared to the udon served in sushi restaurants, the beef and noodles are cooked fresh. They specialize in Sanuki udon which features dashi/bk sauce (saltybroth and gyudon (like Yoshinoya beef). The Nikutama is my favorite but they also offer other Japanese dishes such as unadon and curry, the tempura is amazing as well. Service is excellent here, the workers are always friendly and understanding. Compared to the other locations (Arcadia, Costa Mesa), they give out much more beef and also have a self-serve topping bar. Very worth checking out if you are in the area! read more

The overall taste is quite close to what I've had in Hong Kong and Japan. I ordered the #12 Kake Udon with the clear dashi broth. The broth was light but flavorful, with a really nice bonito aroma. The udon texture was just right -- pleasantly chewy without being too soft or overly firm. Adding the self-serve toppings like green onions, seaweed, and grated ginger made the broth even more flavorful. My only disappointment was the tempura selection. There were very few choices compared with Marugame locations in Hong Kong or Japan -- probably not even a quarter of the variety. The tempura counter is one of my favorite parts of Marugame, so I really hope they add more fried items in the future. So excited that Marugame Udon opened up in Victoria Garden! We came over for dinner after a movie date. We ordered Nikutama Udon, the beef rice bowl, and tempura: cheese, shrimp, and tamago. The service was really good, considering it was mostly self-serve. There wasn't much to choose from in the tempura section because most of it had already been sold for the day. The staff told us that if we didn't see the ones we wanted, they could freshly fry a new one for us. We ordered and paid, and one staff member even brought the tempura to our table after it was made. First time visiting this location! I've been to the Chino Hills location before, so I knew I had to give this one a try. I came here for lunch with my father-in-law and was immediately greeted and thanked for visiting by the manager, who also helped serve us our bowls of udon. While waiting in line, we struck up a conversation, and he asked how my day was going. We ended up chatting about bowling, and he even gave me an extra egg! Super chill guy who was incredibly friendly and welcoming. He also helped me at the register, which really made the whole experience feel personal and appreciated. As for the food, it definitely did not disappoint. I ordered the Nikutama Udon, while my father-in-law tried the new Clam Udon, and we both enjoyed our meals. Take Out Order: BEEF GYUDON Added on the side: Shichimi Pepper, Ginger (both at no additional cost) Rice was done well. Not mushy. Beef was slightly dry, it was lacking that moisture and sweetness from the fatty bits of the beef. It could have had more fat in the meat. Fat also means more flavor. However, I do love that they gave a heaping scoopful of beef! The takeout container was big and it can be shared for two. SWEET POTATO TEMPURA Crispy, crunchy, not salty. Marugame udon is a cool udon shop in Victoria gardens that is really unique! Most of the cooking and prep is visible through a clear partition, so you can actually watch them prepare your order, which is something Ive never seen before! Most of their options are udon variants but they do have some rice bowls and other items. One thing I really liked was there was a tempura bar where you could select individual items. This bar also had an option to get something freshly fried if requested. Despite the cool set up, I was not impressed with my meal. I had the #19 the chicken katsu yaki and my meal did not look like the picture. There was barely any veggies(only a bit of cabbage) and katsu piece I was given had a big section where I think the actual chicken fell out and there was only a fried empty crust. My husband and I were here for their friends & family event prior to their grand opening. After that, we've been here a handful of times. My husband is not a noodle person at all. He doesn't typically eat udon or any type of soup noodles, but I think he's converted now and he'll even ask to eat here. It's cafeteria style where you order while you're in line and then by the end you order your drinks and pay. Then you can seat yourself. They also have an outdoor patio and we've eaten out there with our dogs twice so far. Customer service is usually on point when we've dined here. The times where I'm outside with the dogs, someone will help my husband carry the food outside with him. Other than udon, I've also tried their Nikutama Bento. One thing i love about Marugame is how good all their locations are. I've visited the chino hills and victoria gardens location and they're both amazing. I was too hungry and didn't even take a picture but I got #2 per the server's recommendation and i absolutely loved it! You just tell them any add ons and pick up any tempura you'd want as you make your way down the line. Not the biggest fan of udon but they made it very soft and chewy. Yet, we were able to park in the lot near the Cheesecake Factory. After being in line, we were able to see two menus that allowed us to quickly choose our meals. Without a doubt, we opted for the Kake Udon which was under $10 (a $5.99 value) which had udon in a nice, rich broth. We also had the beef udon which was made in a sweet, rich dashi broth. As we passed by the tempura, we also grabbed a tamagoyaki, sweet potato, and potato croquette to go with our meal. I adore their tamagoyaki. Unlike other marugame udon places, we were able to go to a self serve topping station. It was slightly messy since you can grab as much green onion or ginger as you pleased. Although near closing, it was absolutely busy! My only critique is how overstimulated the workers were. The cashiers and cooks barely responded to people, since they weren't adjusted to the flow of orders yet. In fact, I got ignored when asking for support. The two men who were cleaning and bussing tables were angels (Tristan and David)! They were very kind and quick about serving guests and ensuring their experiences were amazing. Such a great experience at this new Marugame. I've been to the one in LA so it was so nice to hear that one opened in Victoria Gardens. If you've never been, it's quite a unique experience. You start by ordering from the menu at the front counter and they make your main dish fresh. We got their most common udon and a rice with katsu as well as veggie yaki udon. You can add add ons as well, and then move to the tempura station where you can get additional tempura. We basically tried everything and were not disappointed. For everything we ordered, it was decently priced. Highlights for me were the tamago tempura, shrimp tempura, and katsu rice bowl. They either have open seating if it's not too busy or they seat you if it's busy. I get that they're new and they're still in training phase but there were SO MANY employees behind that counter which made them more frazzled than helpful. I ordered my usual nikutama. The regular bowl was tiny. The noodles were filled to the brim but the broth was barely enough. I also got a sweet potato tempura. It's open seating like all the other locations. Their topping/condiment station had more variety tho compared to any other location I've been to. Why I gave it 3 stars: it's just not as good as I how I remember it. Idk if it's bc Marugame has so many locations now and they follow more corporate standards but it doesn't hit the same. Service was fast enough, and the staff kept things moving, which I appreciated. That said, they give you very little broth with the udon. Next time I'd probably try asking for extra broth. The sauce station and water are self-service, so you can grab what you need without waiting around. I'm just glad Rancho Cucamonga / Inland Empire is getting more Asian food options. Victoria Gardens finally got this fast-food style udon chain and it was packed with people curious to try it. The setup is very cafeteria style where you grab your tray, move down the line, pick tempura, and get your food quickly, so it's convenient if you're starving and just want something fast while shopping around the mall. The tempura was actually the best part because they keep frying it fresh, so everything came out hot and crispy. Service moves pretty quickly considering how crowded it gets, but the condiment station became a traffic jam with people waiting around for sauces and toppings. As for the udon itself, the noodles were way too thick and oddly hard, which made it difficult to enjoy. It didn't really have that smooth chewy texture good udon should have. Overall, not terrible for a quick mall meal, but more of a "fills the stomach when you're hungry" kind of place rather than somewhere I'd specifically crave. read more
