If you want to be charged 3-4x what you should be charged, this is the place to go. My clothes cost $70 to buy and almost $220 to get tailored here. I could've bought brand new luxury versions of my clothes for what it cost to get it tailored. Will never come back here again. Stay away read more

Valeria has done a lot of quality work for my family. In fact, she tailored my entire family's wedding day outfits, including my wedding dress and a gorgeous gown for my honeymoon. I'm especially grateful for this business because she took my wedding gown at the last minute and made fantastic changes. It was unwearable before then it fit almost perfectly! Even though it was last minute and had layers of lace, she made it work for a fabulous price. I'm very grateful and recommend this business! read more

Martha's Tailoring - Wedding dress - Sewing & Alterations Near Me - Birmingham, Alabama

If I could give zero stars, I would. I took my reception dress to Valorie at Martha's Tailoring to have it let out and to replace the back buttons with pearl ones. I was fully aware that the dress needed some work and expected it to be somewhat costly--but $575 was outrageous. For context, the dress brand new didn't even cost that much. When I questioned the pricing, Valorie responded in an extremely rude and unprofessional manner, stating they charge $100 an hour and that my alterations took 5.5 hours, plus the cost of pearl buttons. After doing some research, I found that $100/hour is far above the industry average for wedding dress alterations. To compare: I had my actual wedding dress altered at another shop--taken in from a size 14 to a size 2--and the total was $350. Not only was that experience professional and pleasant, but the work was flawless. Martha's Tailoring is overpriced, unprofessional, and disrespectful. I will never bring another garment here again. 0/10 - avoid at all costs. read more

I had an extremely difficult romper to alter which I asked for extensive tailoring on...when I say they nailed it they nailed it! I had very low expectations for the project due to the difficulty and it came out better than I imagined. This is my new tailoring service in the Birmingham area- I am so impressed! read more

If you're looking for a tailoring business in the Birmingham area, I highly recommend this one. I had an emergency tailoring situation for my graduation photoshoot, and they completed the work in just 2 days. The two outfits needed a lot of alterations, and other places quoted me up to a month. This shop truly saved me before my graduation shoot! read more

These ladies are amazing! I brought in a complicated beaded/scalloped wedding dress that needing altering and they went above and beyond to make this dress perfect for me! They are very patient and considerate--also very knowledgable and skillful. I trusted them with my dream gown and they did not disappoint! The price was fair for the hours of work they put in. I highly recommend Martha's Tailoring! read more

Good work, but they were not upfront with pricing and were not considerate of me with the confusion. They couldn't give me an estimate of pricing when I dropped off a dress, so I had to call the next day to ask for an estimate. Then, when I received a text that my item was finished, it was a considerably higher price than my estimate. I called to ask about the cost increase and the woman on the phone gave me 10% off-which was not the original price, but close enough still. Then when I went to pick it up, the woman wanted to charge me a different price than what we had agreed on the previous day. She never apologized for any of the confusion and instead when I asked about it, she removed the discount completely. Never have I dealt with such an inconsiderate customer service experience. I do not recommend Martha's Tailoring, you can get the same quality work with better service elsewhere. read more

This place is a total rip off . How is your alterations going to be more than the item purchased? When the item was dropped off I asked how much , and no response. Received a text saying the item was ready and it would be $230. They can't even tell you what your paying for. Stay away!!!! read more

Solid place for alterations! I've had several formal/bridesmaid dresses altered here over the last few years and have been happy with my experience. I have particularly appreciated their willingness to work with me when I needed a quicker turnaround time on my alterations. I will echo what others have said about not being able to get an upfront quote on pricing; however, I never found the final prices to be unreasonable. read more

Valeria was nice enough when I stopped by on a busy Friday afternoon and was thorough with marking my skirts/dresses that I needed shortened. I took off stars because turn around is 2.5 weeks which is kinda long in my eopinion but it must be great for them because it means they are busy. I also didn't like that I had to prompt her to give me the total for her services, I would rather not be shocked by a price at the end. She could not give me an estimate for my bill which I found unusual and told me on my wider skirts she would charge $50/hour. I did not feel like shortening dresses and skirts was so unusual that she would not already know how much time it would take to alter. I see she has great reviews on her workmanship so I look forward to updating my review once I receive my stuff back. read more

Martha's Tailoring - Sewing & Alterations Near Me - Birmingham, Alabama

My family and I have always had great experiences here including professionalism and quality of work. From a fitting and tailoring for a suit for my very wiggly 1 year old, to multiple formal gowns for myself and numerous pants and suits for my husband, Martha's has always done exactly what we asked and met our expectations. We spent a couple years trying to find a good tailor, and for the last 4 years, we've been able to rely on Martha's. I would suggest not leaving your item until you are sure everyone understands the request and you have an estimate on price to cut down on confusion. Martha's is speedy and efficient- often having your item ready ahead of time! read more

If you are looking for somewhere that will charge $130 for a simple hem/taking in a dress... this is your place! Figured I'd just pay it and never think about it again, but now my dress doesn't even fit correctly. I literally cannot even wear it. Now, I will have to rush to find another bridesmaid dress. This place is very unprofessional... wanted me to pay them through Venmo. If you're going to charge such steep prices maybe do good work and act like a real business! read more

My daughter brought her dress in to get altered last week and she will never be stepping foot in this place ever again. Off the bat, the women completely dismissed the changes my daughter had wanted to the dress and seemed very unconcerned with customer satisfaction. My daughter was never told a price or given a pricing ticket to bring back. She expected to pay around $50 for the alterations, as she only needed it taken in and a simple hem, but instead she was sent a text that she owed a whopping $130 - almost the price of the dress itself. On top of that, the dress does not fit whatsoever and she will now need to buy a whole new dress. I absolutely DO NOT RECOMMEND Marthas unless you wanna pay a fortune for poorly altered dress. read more

She turned my daughters $500 Sherri Hill dress (that wouldn't fit) into a perfect fit!!

I can t say enough positive things about Martha's Tailoring. I live a spontaneous life and often need major alterations done and returned to me in 48 hours. Martha's does impeccable work and has never let me down. From elegant evening gowns to spandex leggings and everything in between, Martha never fails me! read more

Martha has done an amazing job for our family on everything we've taken to her. She's a tad more expensive than the lady we used in Atlanta for several years, but her work has been great! read more

I've been coming here for years and couldn't be happier with the quality and service of Valerie and team. They are very fast, reasonably priced, and make off the rack clothes look custom fitted on my frame. read more

Not very upfront about pricing. And the quality was not as expected, please read entire thing to get full picture. I took my dress and ask for an estimate in price but what I was told once I got my text that my dress was ready was about $500 more than what they told me it would be. I understand that the hem was not the easiest but for what they did I could have taken it to a nicer place. They had a poor demeanor when I asked for the bustle to have more structure. My dress was heavy and I knew that three little things would not hold it up but she urged that it was fine. Needless to say it broke before the ceremony even started and I had to hold my dress train for my entire wedding. Not happy. read more

Great work. I recently moved to Birmingham from Atlanta & was in search of a reasonably priced but quality seamstress. I'm sure there are cheaper options in town but Martha's work is wonderful & she can pull off any alteration that you may need. read more

I loved this place. They moved to 4227 Dolly Ridge Rd, Vestavia, AL 35243. Which is less than a mile from the old location. I asked for a simple alteration to be done on a bridesmaid dress and she finished it that day. Price was completely fair. Everyone that worked there was pleasant and nice to deal with. I don't know why Martha's hasn't been reviewed yet but I highly suggest using her as your tailor. read more

I had been coming there for years. Although i live in Atlanta whenever i visit my parents, i bring my stuff there. They do quality work and great prices. It is very hard to find places that do fast, quality and so reasonable ! read more

The staff at Martha's are extremely kind and do excellent work. They also have a website, which tends to make them an exception in the Birmingham tailoring world, and it is very nice- prices are listed online along with their hours so you know exactly what to expect. I'll definitely visit again. read more

Valerie does amazing work, she is truly gifted! I've been a customer for over ten years and would not dream of going anywhere else. I routinely take at least of couple of items to her monthly and she always does a perfect job. Her skill goes way beyond the basic hemming to resetting sleeves, collars whatever you need. She improves so many new clothes I buy and gives them a custom look and feel. Her prices are competitive and she finishes the clothes pretty quickly too. Take your stuff to her, you won't regret it! read more

Great tailor. Martha is fast and excellent at her craft. I have taken her multiple pair of pants all asking for different things to be done and they have all been excellent. Highly recommend read more

They do good work at a reasonable price in my experience. I have had a men's Billy Reid suit and Eidos jacket altered here. All the work was done before the estimated time. They are the only alterations shop in the area with a clear website that tells the pricing upfront which is a plus also. read more

Martha's does alterations well, but she is pricey. Annie's Alterations in Cahaba Heights does just as well if not better and charges a lot less. read more

Came in to get a formal gown hemmed, and an inch or two taken off the bottom. Did not get anything else done or the bodice brought it, just the dress shortened. Two stars because she was able to get the job done decently. No more stars because service was atrocious. I called 15 minutes before to see if I could get a quote and was told I needed to bring in the dress to get it looked at before she can give a quote, fair enough. I also understand that tailoring services vary place to place as far as pricing which is why I asked for a quote to begin with. Came in and said I had just called about getting my dress altered and was waved off to try it on in the dressing room. When I walked out the lady in the front with a Russian accent had me stand and she measured with a white chalk-y spray gun about how much to hem off, which took a total of 5 minutes. Took off the dress and came back to the front where she was writing up a ticket. I asked her how much it would be, and she still wasn't able to give me a direct answer until I kept insisting until she said it would be about $50. I am fairly new at getting things tailored, so if you are like myself I would advise about being firm about getting prices up front before she does anything at all. When I asked her if could take my dress and come back to see if I could it done anywhere else she would not give me my dress back and told me she had already 'serviced me and used up her time by giving me her service marking the dress' and insisted on not giving me my dress back. She said that I should have asked her before about the price, with which I responded and told her that I mentioned that I just called when I came in. She just shrugged her shoulders. Would not recommend this establishment. read more

The staff could not have been more helpful. The service was done when they said it would be completed. The end product was great. I had pants altered to make them longer, shorter, and remove extra baggage in the back and all 3 types of alterations were done amazingly. I highly recommend. read more

My mother and I took my wedding dress to Martha's Tailoring to get it altered for my wedding. I needed it taken in some and wanted a lace jacket to be sewn into the dress and a bustle for after the ceremony. After getting into my dress, the owner priced her finger on one of the pins and got a small spot of blood on my dress. I wasn't happy, but I understand things happen. However, with her hand still bleeding she continued to touch my dress, getting more blood on it. My mother then asked her to please put on a band-aid before she continued touching the dress, to which she replied "I'll get it out with my spit. Did you know that spit is how you get out blood?". This is my WEDDING dress she is talking about spitting on! I don't care if that is how you get out blood, I do not want some lady's spit all over the most expensive item of clothing I will mostly likely ever wear. She was so nonchalant about the whole incident. She still did not put on a band-aid and continued messing with the dress. She was not able to pin the dress for alterations and kept complaining about how thick the material was. This kinda scared me so I asked her if she had experience working with dresses like this and she said she did, however I did not have a lot of faith in her skill. My mom was shocked and asked me if I really wanted to leave my dress here. Initially I did leave it, because I assumed anyone could take in a dress and I could always take it somewhere else for the remaining alterations. However after leaving and talking to my fiancé and my mother again, I decided against it. My mother went back and got the dress before any alterations were done. I just think for a special item like a wedding dress or any other special occasion, you would want someone to respect your purchase. I did not feel like she cared that much about my dress and I would never leave something with her to be altered, because if she would do that with me there, what does she do when customers aren't around? read more
