My daughter dropped off a dress a week before she needed it. She told her to pick it up on Saturday at noon. She needed it at 4pm that day. We arrived shortly before noon to be told, I haven't started it come back in 30 minutes. We left and returned 30 minutes later, and it still wasn't complete. She then told us to return at 2:30, at which time it was finally complete with the excuse that other people came in before her. I think what she charged for her alterations (hem, and strap shortening) $85.00 was absolutely ridiculous. Not to mention I think a discount should have been offered for not having it done on time. We will not return to this alterations store. read more

Overpriced. Charged me $90 for a bridesmaid dress alteration and had to be in all cash. Shop very hard to find.

Never gave us a estimate on what it would cost to alter a dress, then not on time, twice and overpriced. Do not go there. it is a rip-off! We had to go there 3 times to pick up the dress that was supposed to be done after 5 days. We missed lunch with our daughter because of all that (we live in Atlanta) She offered a $10 discount...?!? I called Maria today to see if she was willing to work with us. nope, nada, niet. I asked her why she didn't call my daughter to let her now that the dress wasn't ready? I was told that we should have called, she doesn't have time to interact with customers....? I am not sure that she understands what customer service stands for in the US. read more

Do not go here: it was not only overpriced but also late and the people were rude. I needed to get a bridesmaids dress altered and they told me it would be ready the Wednesday before the wedding. I wasn't able to get there until Thursday, and after searching for the dress for 10 minutes, she finally found it and had not even started...it was after 2 PM. I had to come back later, taking more time off work, and she had the audacity to charge $65 for just a hem (the dress did not have tons of delicate layers). Maria had left and her associate would not discuss the price and walked away from me yelling that I need to call Maria myself. I did call her and she did not want to budge on the price and finally said $60 - $5 off for a dress that was not complete at the time specified (and I did not do all the alterations as I had lost all trust in them). It was extremely frustrating but I am glad I didn't wait until the end of the day to discover my dress was lost and not even started. There is a fabulous place in Homewood that I will never stray from again. read more

She seems very friendly and helpful, but be weary of her prices-- I needed three pair of shorts hemmed and she was going to charge me $18 PER PAIR. That seems a BIT steep to me. Also, I had a jacket that needed sleeves let out about 3/4" of an inch and I needed it ready the next day. She quoted me $40 for the work plus an additional undisclosed rush fee. I dropped off a bridesmaids dress to get altered and hemmed and was going to charge $120! I was hesitate leaving my dress since she also said I could only pick up a day before wedding (4 weeks away). I decided to pick up my dress the next day and bring somewhere else. She made me pay $20 to get it back! She charged for a "fitting" but I later saw she took out the pens when I was at the other alterations place (which I was only charged $70). Just don't. I used Maria's exclusively 3 years ago and they were great, however since moving back to Birmingham, they have over charged me for 3 items. They do a decent job, not great, but the prices they charge are beyond ridiculous - they seriously just make up the cost when you walk in. They charged me $40 to let sleeves out of a dress, SHORT SLEEVES, that were no more than 4 inches long... they had nothing written down, she just threw out $40... I was absolutely floored!!!! They are just taking advantage of the Vestavia/Mountain Brook residents... and again, they don't do a great job. Save yourself, use someone more honest. read more

This is the best place in town. Being a businessman, it is so important to have tailored cloths. Maria has tailored my suits, pants and even my dress shirts from Joseph Banks to fit better. Highly suggest. Cash or check only but it is worth it! read more

After being recommended by a friend, I came to Maria with a dilemma. My bridesmaid's dress was too small. I had extra fabric on the way and the store that I bought the dress from was certain it would not be a problem to fix the dress. When I tried on the dress for Maria she asked me why I needed the dress. When I explained, she told me you need to tell your friend you will not wear this dress. I cannot fix it. It is not flattering on you at all. When I got upset she stated, "It seems like you care very much for your friend, but she does not care much for you or she would not have chosen this dress for you." I left horrified. The bridal shop recommended another seamstress who took 5 minutes to look at the dress and told me she would have it back in a week. No problems and you cannot tell anything was done to the dress. Please do not be a client to this horrible business. read more

I found this place just driving down Cahaba Heights road. I was looking for a tailor to do some jeans, suits, and my girlfriend's bridesmaid dresses. We had tried some other places around Birmingham and found most were extremely slow and did shoddy work. Maria's does excellent work for an extremely fair price. You may call around and find cheaper prices, but don't expect anywhere near as good results as you would if you went here. I have 5 more suits that need to be done, which I will gladly take here. read more

Do NOT use them, they do not stand behind their work. Pinned my clothes, but when they sewed clothes they took extra fabric and hid it in seam instead of removing it, the extra fabric caused the back of shirt to sag ,when I brought clothes back to have it fixed they wanted to charge me again to fix the mistake they made, they insisted and when I said I would not pay again to have them do what I had already paid to have done .. She just turned her back on me!!!! They want to charge $25 to have two straps on a tank top shortened!!!! read more

My 19 year old daughter went in to Maria's to have a sundress hemmed. Marie made the hem too wide. I asked her to redo the hem. She argued with me and did not want to redo it. I would NEVER use her again and I will NEVER recommend her to anyone. There are several other alteration shops in the area that I will try. I wish I would have read these reviews before I wasted my time and money. read more
