This is a small family business, no fancy nothing! But the food is delicious. I love all their caldos (soups) but my favorite is the albondigas with fresh made tortillas. Prices are reasonable considering that everything is so expensive. I mean you can get a McDonalds combo or a home style meal for about the same price. I was looking for a place to eat breakfast as I work close by and never seemed to notice this place. I ordered the Chile Rellenos burrito and it was delicious. I decided to dine in as the employees were very welcoming. I asked for the spicy chilie and I know I'm going to regret it later. Today I am visiting LA from out of town, we were driving around and found this restaurant across the street from Smart & Final. It has a nice little parking lot in the back, a lot of Restaurant's in LA usually have no parking lots. So this placing have a nice parking lot in the back is awesome! I ordered the shredded beef enchilada and my husband had the birria tacos. Both meals were delicious, and everything taste like it is cooked fresh from scratch. There is limited seating inside, but you can always order to go if needed. The employees were also very nice and helpful when we placed our order. Overall excellent Mexican restaurant. read more

Giving this place a one star rating is disrespectful to other one star establishments. After paying close to $80.00 dollars for three entrees and three Horchatas the only thing we all left with were serious stomach aches. Ehhhhh. 2.5 So there were good points. It was clean, the service was friendly and helpful and the handmade corn tortillas were DOPE But honestly, the rest of it, was meh. I got the carne asada and bf got the chicken fajitas and both were super poor cuts of meet. My asada was not only a poor cut of meat but cooked within an inch of it's life to near leather. The salsa was watery and bland and the sides (except the beans and rice) look old and withered. Perhaps this is more of a menudo on the weekends spot but I won't be back. read more

We phone ordered two pozolés to go at around 11am. When I got to work, I sat down and immediately threw in all the toppings they had included. I found a dead fly floating in my soup just as I was about to take my first spoonful. I phoned the restaurant to notify them of what had happened and to advise them that we were coming back to return the soups. The phone just rang and rang so my friend decided to just drive back to the restaurant. Upon her return she explained the shocking and terrible service she had encountered. They were actually hesistant to give us a refund. The waitress rudely asked her why we had put in the toppings already. (One of the soups was untouched). She also attempted to insinuate that the fly got into the soup while in our office. She then called the cook (who apparently is her mother/cook/owner). My friend is Belizean and I suppose the woman assumed she would not understand when she said in Spanish, "they always want something for free..." to which my friend replied in Spanish, " no! What we would like is a refund and no flies in our food." I decided to call the restaurant and tell her I put the toppings in my soup and was mixing everything in when the dead MOSCA popped up. What she said next really grossed me out just as much as that dead fly in my pozolé... she says, "The fly is usually on top of the soup and you would have seen it when you opened the container..." Really?? I'm glad you are an expert in flies/insects inside food and we are also sorry we put in the toppings that probably made it impossible for you to throw back into the pot BUT rest assured we will never come here again. read more

I hadn't been to Martha's Kitchen in years and from what I understand, they changed owners since the first and only time I had eaten there before. I remember really enjoying it and being impressed that they make their own tortillas. Cut to today when I decide to stop in for a late breakfast with my mother and nephew. I ordered the huevos rancheros and they weren't at all what I was expecting. The egg was overcooked and they tried to hide the fact by smothering it with cheese and the sauce that was extremely runny (it felt like my egg was swimming a shallow plate of soup) but I could see the rubbery egg whites peaking through. I also ordered an orange and carrot juice because I love both and figured it would be simple but amazing. Unfortunately they managed to really miss the mark on it as well. The carrot totally overpowered the orange when it should be a nice balance of both. My mom ordered a chicken burrito and she told me afterwards in my car that she didn't particularly care for her dish either as they used shredded, boiled chicken and she was expecting pollo asado (grilled chicken). I will say that their handmade tortillas are still exceptional. Any authentic Mexican restaurant should make their own and I give them props for doing so. That said, I wish I could say I'll give Martha's Kitchen another try because I love to support little hole-in-the-walls, but the fact that neither my mom nor I were satisfied doesn't make it likely. I had to try the place where my friend has been raving about. I did take out. Upon arrival the place actually has parking in the rear. It's a small family owned restaurant where EVERYTHING is home made. Per suggestion of my friend I got the hand made on the spot, flour tortillas, smashed beans, fresh chips & fresh salsa. Wow. how did I not know about this place before??? Dear God those beans were some magical beans soo much flavorrrrrrrrr. It was unbelievable & with those hand made flour tortillas it was a match made in heaven I tell ya. Those chips were fresh & crunchy with their slightly spiced salsa(on the watery side) which I don't mind. I'm coming back for their Chile rellanos!! Great food and wonderful service are found at Martha's Kitchen. They have a varied menu. Tortillas are hand made and simply delicious. For breakfast, I recommend the machaca sinaloense. On hot summer days, tostadas de ceviche, cazuela fria style are just what you need, or maybe an aguachile (red in this case, not green). The tacos are also delicious. The place as i understand it, is run by a mother and her two daughters. It's small and quaint. With a decent size parking lot in the rear. For a Saturday morning the traffic was lite on the street, more so then the normal bussle that engulfs this area. I ordered the birria (soup) and my mother ordered the menudo. Please pass up the old reviews. This place is under new ownership I believe since November last year. The cook is still the same Martha. Anyway, this is a quaint little hole in the wall that has been freshly redecorated but where the food is still fresh and very hot food is served. The tortillas are freshly rolled (flour) or pressed (corn). The birria I so far per my taste buds believe is best in the area. The rest is pretty tasty. Salsas are not hot but freshly made. I have been faithfully coming to this restaurant for quite a while now. I adore their salsa, which I often purchase to take home. The chile rellenos are the best, even in a burrito. Speaking of burritos, I also love their chile Colorado burrito. Guacamole has always been very good and fresh, and even the tortilla chips are fine. Recently I had a great bowl of albondigas. I don't understand the negative reviews I read here. Perhaps someone with a grudge, or one of those flighty capricious people with a whim of iron. Love it one moment, hate it the next. But Martha's kitchen will always be my favorite in Lincoln Heights. If you haven't been there, give it a try.
