My partner recently had surgery. From the time we checked in until we left the next day, we had a wonderful experience. The volunteers at check in were kind and helpful. The nurses in preop (thank you, Tanya) were gracious and thoughtful. The surgical nurse, Beth, was funny and kind, which helped put me at ease as he went back to surgery. Afterward, the nurses who supervised his recovery were gentle and helpful. Overnight, the RN Carrie and the aide, Claudia were attentive, thoughtful and patient. Our day nurse, Bryan was funny and very helpful (be sure to check out his shoes!) Overall, this was the best hospital experience I've had. It was clear that the staff (and doctors: hats off to Dr. Molitar, who came out following surgery to ease my concerns and let me know how the surgery went. He had been in surgery all day, although it was late, he took time to come out to update me personally,) anyway, it is abundantly Care that Marshall Hospital cares. I had a horrifying experience in April of 2024 here. I came for treatment for a neurological disorder that had become exacerbated, but was labeled psychotic, treated like I wasn't even a human being. I wasn't allowed to have visitors or make phone calls and there is no documentation in my records as to why my civil rights were revoked. It shouldn't matter if a person is truly psychotic or not, but staff here will treat you like a second-class citizen if they believe you are a psychiatric patient. Staff would not allow my husband to visit with me and they never even told me he showed up. I was devastated because I thought my husband had abandoned me when I was in a neurological crisis. When I requested my medical records, they were filled with errors, and they falsely documented that my husband agreed to transfer me to a psych ward. As if my husband doesn't know my medical history. He would never do that! Staff at Marshall documented that my rights to use the phone or have visitors were revoked. Whether you're on a 5150 hold or not, or a psychiatric patient or not, this is a violation of a person's Civil Rights and in violation of the Lanterman Petris Short Act ***(which BTW, the patient advocates and staff at Marshall told me they "never heard of the LPS Act", which is the law that governs 5150 Holds, and the law that California put into place in the 1960s TO END INDEFINITE HOSPITALIZATIONS AND CONSERVATORSHIPS and to make sure psychiatric patients did not have LESS RIGHTS THAN PRISONERS) My husband wrote Marshall a signed letter asking them to change the false documentation and false quotes they attributed to him in my records, but they wouldn't. El Dorado County Behavioral Health ended up correcting their false documentation in my records. But it wasn't without a fight, and it wasn't without severe damage to my marriage and my mental health. I even showed Marshall that El Dorado corrected my records. Filed 3 separate complaints about my medical records being erroneous and inaccurate, but they don't care. Now I have false diagnoses in my medical records, which are legal documents. In 2016, Marshall agreed to pay $5.5 million to settle allegations that it defrauded Medicare and Medi-Cal in billing. They were double-billing and practicing fraudulent documentation. Well, it seems that they are now trying to use psychiatric diagnostic codes in order to get reimbursed more money, since they can't get away with double-billing Medicare and Medi-Cal anymore. Psychiatric patients (and non-psychiatric patients) who are mistaken for substance abusers or psychiatric patients at Marshall are in real danger of losing their civil rights here and I don't say that lightly. I'm absolutely disgusted with this place and will never go there again. I was so upset about my experience at Marshall, I ended up creating an advanced directive just to have in writing that I am never to be brought to Marshall under any circumstances. read more

Extremely negligent staff in the E.D. Proving that Marshall doesn't read the reviews any more than they will read your medical history, look at the lame Bot response from Marshall--obviously didn't bother to read this review. ********* I was in a neurological crisis and unable to verbalize or advocate for myself after being brought to Marshall's ED involuntarily. I would have never gone there voluntarily because I've heard a lof of terrible stories. Not just from patients, but also staff. And now I know first hand, how true these stories are. I had been brought in by ambulance. I begged ER staff to contact my husband. I told staff multiple times I needed him to explain my medical condition to the doctors because I was not in a state of mind to speak for myself. I told staff multiple times they had permission to share my medical info with him Instead, when my husband DID show up at the E.R attempting to advocate for me, whoever the Marshall staff was that saw him turned him away and told him to go home. They did not document his contact information, and did not take any of my medical history from him or document it. I was a nurse myself for over a decade before being diagnosed with a diability, and I understand that sometimes things are so chaotic, you have to turn away visitors, or err on the side of not violating someone's HIPAA rights. However, it is completely unprofessional and irresponsible to fail to obtain someone's medical history from a family member, when that patient is in a crisis and unable to speak for themselves, and when that patient is Begging staff for their loved one!! Not only that, because this person did not document my husband's phone numbers in my medical chart or tell any of the healthcare staff who were assigned to care for me that my husband had shown up looking for me, I spent nearly 18 hours in a state of complete despondency believing my husband had abandoned me during a medical crisis When I tried to speak to the Patient Advocate at Marshall about being treated for a misdiagnosis for nearly 24 hours because whoever this person was that spoke with my husband and didn't document the medical history he tried to give her. I was upset, and I was trying to give the patient advocate the whole story, but she wasn't interested in hearing the story, and kept yelling my name at me over the phone, so she could interrupt me and say "The person you saw was NOT a Marshall employee" The Marshall patient advocate was completely unhelpful. I wanted to confirm who that person was, and because no one documented my husband's visit, I don't know for sure if it was a Marshall employee, or an El Dorado County employee. I was already traumatized from having my civil rights taken away. It was documented in my chart that I wasn't allowed to have visitors, use the phone, or use the bathroom by myself, but there is no documentation or rationale in my chart as to why my Civil Rights were being violated. When I muttered under my breath how much I hate Marshall, the patient advocate said "Oh, you hate me? Well, you can just hang up on me and never speak to me again then." So I did hang up on her. That was on Friday 4/19/2024. I ended up filing grievances against both El Dorado and Marshall Hospital since I wasn't able to confirm who it was who did not take my medical history from my husband, or pass on his correct contact information to the staff, or to the night shift when shift changed, or even bothered to tell me he showed up. They transferred me to a psychiatric facility within 8 hours without properly medically clearing me. When I got to the psych hospital, I finally saw a doctor who agreed that an autistic person did not belong in a psych ward. I am truly traumatized by this and haven't slept in two weeks because of the nightmares. I would never wish this experience on my worst enemy: feeling like no one believes that you're not "crazy", and taking away your civil rights without a reason. One star for the sitters in charge of watching over me. They were great and treated me like a real person But 0 stars for the hospital itself. Totally unprofessional and negligent. I had been warned away from this place; drive 'forever' if you have to, but don't go here, they said. Well, 'they' were wrong! I was having a serious. life threatening cardiac event - walked into the ER and was seen within minutes, probably because I've been taught to lead with, "I have a history of MI" (heart attack) -- and in quick fashion they found my blood pressure was beyond the flashing red danger zone. This staff, this whole place has been so attentive, patient, forthcoming and incredibly knowledgeable and spot on, it's impressed me big time. Me and my daughter brought my 2 yr old grandson to Marshall for a high fever and horrible cough and the doctor put him on prednisone and said it was croup. He continued to get worse on the prednisone and the coughing and high fevers continued so we brought him back to Marshall knowing that he definitely needs an antibiotic! This young doctor ordered an X-ray of his lungs. He came in saying it's just inflammation in his lungs and it's just viral. I argued a bit and told him it sounded bacterial and that he needed an antibiotic but he kept saying its viral... My grandson continued to get worse with no appetite and no sleeping, high fevers and now complaining that he can't breath!! We ran him to Mercy this time. They took an Xray and said it was pneumonia and put him on an antibiotic... I was so upset that Marshall missed diagnosed him and this could have been a dangerous situation! I called and complained about it, and they were all extremely rude and I didn't even get an apology.. read more

My whole family have been struggling since my 83 year old mother has been hospitalized for 25 days and the doctors can't find where she is bleeding, they don't know if it's from the colon or the stomach on the 21st day they say they don't have the modern tools or equipment where they can see where my mother is bleeding and they have already done around 5 transfusions and we demand that they send her to another hospital where they do have specialist and the technology tools and they don't want to do it, they say that first they have to check in local hospitals and if they refuse they will expand their search to other hospitals, we researched in our part and checked with other hospitals in the Bay area and they told us that Marshall Hospital managed their transfer, but we don't understand what they are waiting for, my mother has already left the ICU area, and now they want to send her to a Nursing Home and they are saying that when she bleeds again they will take her back to the same hospital, my question is, do you think we are ignorant or that we don't realize their intentions ??? The negligence is evident and why not say abuse!!!! We are already on the 25th and no transfer to another hospital has been resolved! The case manager is not doing anything! read more

I have been a loyal Marshall patient for 9 years, am also a former employee. This past winter I received a letter that my psychiatrist was leaving Marshall. No problem, I thought, I will just see the other one. When I called, I learned via the outgoing voicemail message that the entire department had closed. It took me another month to get in to see my primary care NP to get refills on my prescriptions and a referral, meaning I had to ration out my pills and reduce my own dosage to avoid a sudden stop and whatever those ramifications would be. I followed the instructions online for the service they referred me to. My new psychiatrist is located in Manhattan Beach (Los Angeles) and will only see me virtually, understandably so. My first appointment lasted less than 10 minutes. I was asked what meds I was on and the doses and asked "what would you like me to call in for you?" Um, this is not okay. I was honest, but I could have spouted off any number of different medications. How many benzos do you think I could have walked away with? Turns out none. My pharmacy will not fill prescriptions for the medications that I'm on from a non-local provider, also understandably so. Back to my primary for another refill and another referral. This time I was asked "Have you called any local psychiatrists? Please call around and if they are taking new patients, accept your insurance, and can see you in a timely manner, we can route a referral to them." Having trusted Marshall with my care for so long, I really would have hoped they would have referred me to a local provider that they've had good experience with and that THEY trust with my care. Marshall Medical will Drop the Ball when it comes to any home rehab care! Marshall was our a physical therapist choice per my medical insurance/ They we're to come our home for my wife's Knee replacement therapy. They never showed up. Once we called they stated the service was lost, than they stated they cannot provide this service. We live 15 minutes away! My Medical insurance is Excellent!! Marshall once again has Let us down. Beware ! If you can choose a Medical carrier I would suggest staying away or leaving Marshall Medical group. This is NOT the first time Marshall Medical has failed. I had an awful experience with my family member in the emergency department here. The staff completely ignored him - didn't even offer as much as a sip of water in a 3 hour time span of waiting to be seen. Clearly in distress and needed attention and he got nothing until 4 hours of waiting and me begging for help. I've never experienced anything like this before, it was truly shocking. If you have an emergency I'd head to UC Davis for the proper care that you deserve. read more

My father was dying from Cancer, suffering and withering away. He went to the ER for help. They did nothing for him and then left him outside with no wheelchair or anything. He was a high fall risk, as he was extremely dizzy constantly. I was so angry that he was left outside. He died 1 month after his diagnosis. The Cancer spread throughout his body, but the Doctors at Marshall didn't find it until it was too late. I'll never EVER go to Marshall for any kind of help. read more

Went to the ER because of a broken thermometer and 'low temp' reading, told them this was likely the issue and that I had no insurance so I'd be on self pay or MediCal. Was told after the fact when I was perfectly fine and told to leave, that it was $700 + just to check in to the Marshall ER. The bill came a week later and it's $1269.39 to have my temperature taken and told to leave, in 10 minutes And then the ER doctor sent a separate bill for another $1300 for doing NOT A DAMN THING? These people are crooked as hell. I was seen in September of 2018 while on vacation. I have insurance but was still billed $2000 and some change for my visit. As soon as I got the bill I started making payments, they sent me to collections anyway, yet they still continue to accept my monthly payments. The collection agency still continues to contact me and it has been put on my credit report even though I have cancelled checks showing that I pay every month and they cash my checks. I've disputed this with the major credit reporting agencies but have still not got anywhere with Marshall Medical center. I call them, I write them and never get anywhere but they still get there money. Shiesty Shiesty shiesty!! Also, was told by the ER nurse after being in the ER for EIGHT LONG HOURS, that if I left I could possibly die. Umm okay, I'm pretty sure that could be a possibility for anyone correct? My daughter has a UTI, I scheduled an appointment for her to be treated on Tuesday but it got canceled due to the doctor being on call, so they rescheduled for 2 hours later, then canceled that one too. Okay, fine, I'll reschedule for Wednesday even though she's in pain and it's not ideal, I just received a confirmation text that it is for Thursday, and not Wednesday as the receptionist said. Thank you very much for leaving my daughter in pain because you don't know the names for the days of the week, you absolute geniuses. In the hospital I received a medication I take at home twice a week. Since I was in the hospital 10 days (!) I needed it twice. Marshall charged $1010 each time. I normally pay $36 for 8!!! They also performed and charged me for a drug screen in the ER, done without my knowledge or my permission. It cost over $700. Review your charges! read more

Worse service ever. Seen the Dr 2 times the first time was as soon as i got back to a room in emergency, all he asked was if i had a covid shot, the next time qas to tell me i could go my xray was clear i just had bronchitis. He never once listened to my lungs, a nurse did after i was sitting their in a room for about an hour and a half. Never been in an emergency room were they dont do any blood work. 3 stars, for nice doctors and time it took to see one of them at the Marshall physicians office. Marshall E.R sucks, just like every where else. They triage you right away, maybe if you having a heart attack. Otherwise be ready to sit in waiting room for 9 hrs in pain, while you're internally bleeding & they will admit you for 5 days without finding anything ...but you're bleeding internally thanks to one surgeon who was covering for someone else that day. I was recently admitted and had to have surgery. The Doctors, nurses, and aides were all amazing and attentive to my needs.

Yesterday I had my left big toe fixed, floating bone removed, bone removed in the metatarsal joint and two screws added by Dr. Bajwa. The entire surgical experience for me was flawless from check in, prep room, surgery, recovery. I was given amazing care in every way! The nurses and staff were funny, kind, and compassionate! Sometimes there is trouble inserting the IV into my vein, but she used a lidocaine local and then pushed the needle into the vein first try! Wow! I left the hospital after Dr. Bajwa took lots of time to speak with my wife about post operative care. I am impressed! Thank you so much Marshall for being 5 star!!! read more

Brought in by ambulance, treated in emergency for what turned out to be a fractured pelvis. Excellent caring professional caregivers. In emergency for 4 hours, no complaints. Transferred to a ward. Spent 4 days then transferred to skilled nursing facility. The Marshall staff were great, friendly, competent, caring, and efficient. My room was immaculate. The food from the cafeteria was very good, plenty of it and very tasty. They ask you about your menu choices and you receive what you ask for, promptly by a very nice friendly staff. Lots of choices and fresh fruit and veggies. Delicious cookies and puddings. The nurses and aides and physical therapist and my case manager were outstanding. They listened to my comments and were very responsive and helpful. Such a warm friendly environment, I couldn't have asked for more. My contacts to nursing station were addressed promptly. I am completely satisfied with my stay at Marshall Hospital. read more

Its taken some time but i am finally healing so i thought I'd rate my experience on the care we received in the Emergency Room on 10/12/16. My husband died on March 12, 2017. While on vacation in Italy i noticed that my husband started to have trouble finding words. When we got back i took him to Marshall ER. We were immediately placed in a room and our nurse, Jill, informed us of what we could expect over the course of our stay. Jill kept us updated as our test results came in and made sure that my husband was comfortable throughout our stay. Unfortunately the diagnosis was a life-shattering terminal brain tumor. Jill cried with us; what compassion. Our doctor, Dr Torgerson, gently informed us of the diagnosis and worked to arrange for us to see a neurosurgeon the next day at Stanford. Throughout our visit we felt supported, informed, and cared for. My most profound thanks for the exceptional and compassionare care of these great folks who are there when you need them; 24/7/365. read more

At my place of employment, I have heard a few negative comments about Marshall Hospital and I am always surprised because every time I've come here 99% of the staff have bent over backwards to be helpful, comforting, empathetic, and kind. I've had several ER visits here and have been treated as a person, not a number, on every occasion . I was here for a knee replacement operation and the Dr was beyond phenomenal and the nursing staff wonderful to me. I am in the Hospital again because of some weird sickness I have and this time has been no different than the oTher times. The nursing staff have been so knowledgeable and helpful in taking care of me. They have helped me to explain to the Doctor all of my symptoms so that he could make a proper diagnosis and they have been so empathetic and comforting during a difficult problem to diagnose. I would recommend Marshall Hospital to anyone!! read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!!! This place is an TOTAL rip off! A guy, who looked liked a janitor, brought me into a room after a long wait and hooked me up to an EKG. I asked him how long he went to school for that. He said he didn't. Marshall needed people so they taught him how to do it. Then he said, "But I would never do this to a woman because that would be creepy." WTF? I was billed $49 for a "doctor's fee," for this person who clearly had no idea what he was doing and had no idea what any of it meant. Then I was billed a whopping $485 for an EKG that lasted less than 30 seconds. I received the bill for $49 and paid it, thinking that was the charge for the EKG, but also got the $485 bill, which I was positive was a mistake. But then I got a call from collections telling me I owed it all. I found online that cash payers could get 50% off, so I told collections what I had found. I was told it was too late, I owed it all. My calls to the supervisor went unanswered. This is a money-making operation that takes advantage of people in need. read more

I have literally been saved by other staff in this hospital. I was on my death bed with Stage 4 heart failure and was saved by the staff. I've been on the news and stated how great the staff and doctors treated me. Thank you to all those in this facility l, I owe you my life. With that said, I have never been treated as rudely as I was by the ER check in, a blonde woman with glasses named Christina . I came back to get some of my belongings slightly concerned after being told that they could not be found. I was spoken to as if I was less than. After waiting too long I was told that all my belongs were most likely thrown away. My wife had spoken with someone on the day I was discharged and was told that my belongings would be held safe and that they were found and retrieved and all we had to do was come in to get them. I drove 40 minutes to get here and I was told that all my belongings were either missing or stolen. Considering nobody can find my items which included a very expensive iPad and about 15 medications for my heart which I am in again stage for heart failure and have none left because they kept them and again I was told they were either stolen or thrown away. I really did know better than to go there. As a long time local I'd heard more horror stories than a functioning medical facility should have - from friends and relatives, as well as current and past employees of Marshall. Very few positive stories. Against the advice of almost everyone I know, I had a minor procedure done there. Horrid communication. Misdiagnosis. Improper administration of medication. Perhaps they can start to improve their facility by training their employees to the know the difference between left and right. As in.... "it's my left knee" which they confirmed and promptly began to prep the right knee. Unless it's a life threatening, time sensitive emergency, don't go there, ever! read more

Emergency Room Facility- Do not walk away from this place... RUN!!! I was taken to Marshall Hospital ER, via medic until with EXTREME leg and back pain. I could not walk or sit. I had to lay flat and even that was extremely painful. Extremely rude ER physician, told me there was nothing wrong with me. Attempted to send me home on yet more pain medication (Not what I wanted). Ran no tests of any kind, waited over 9 hours, to be treated with disrespect. I had to insist I be transferred to a hospital in Sacramento. She called my physician and told her that I was there to get "high on pain meds" and there was nothing wrong with me. I am blessed to have a wonderful primary care physician, that knows my history on my back & stood up for me. She too, insisted I be transported elsewhere, since "they" couldn't do anything for me. Finally, was transferred to Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento. (GREAT hospital by the way) !!! Would give them 10 stars, if I could have.... The outcome of my transfer- I had a severely ruptured disc, that had intruded into my sciatic nerve, blocking it by 99% ! Needless to say.... I had to have EMERGENCY SURGERY, to have it all resolved. I am not one to give out "One Star" ratings.... but I have to admit, this place was horrific! NEVER again, will I go there. read more

Concerning a nurse practitioner at dr Patel office. Very dissatisfied. Could not have been more out of touch with me. I'm a construction worker and 62 yrs old. Currently working a very tough job that is behind. Requires everyone to work 7 days x 12 hours until December 15. I explained my age and physical requirements causing pain so intense that I awake nightly every hour or 2. She had no idea. Her reply was I'm not familiar with construction. Possibly u need a different job. Maybe it's arthritis. We can prescribe anti inflammatory. I just needed help to get through the next 10-12 weeks. I need to sleep without pain. Her reply is maybe find another job. I'm 62. I just need to get through another year. Who else is going to pay E $70 an hour and contribute to my retirement. I need to sleep without pain. GET REAL. if You're working a real job construction, hard work, stay away from this practice. That haven't got a clue. I wish I could have an easy life. From the moment my mother was seen in the Emergency room and later transferred to the ICU, she was treated with compassion, professionalism and even a little humor ( which she needed). The nurse who took care of my mom in the ER kept us up to date with information and had an exceptional bedside manner. I can't thank her enough. I stayed with her in the ICU and the wonderful care extended there as well. Prior to my mom being discharged the doctor was kind enough to speak to me on the phone because I had gone home and missed when he came in to see her. I am thankful my mother is alive and so grateful to the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff who took care of her ( and me) during her stay. I felt it was important to remind our health care professionals the importance of treating patients with kindness because it does matter and you matter! Keep paying it forward! I understand that when it comes to a family member's health, no one in the medical industry can please them. However, in our case my 17 month old son was having problems breathing. MMC staff took him straight in and made appropriate decisions to have him transported by ambulance to Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento so he could receive the best treatment possible.
