We had the tasting menu this week on a visit to Rochester. We enjoy doing tasting menus when we first come to a new restaurant to try many of the dishes. We found the five course tasting menu to be interesting, but neither my wife nor I found the food to be delicious or memorable. Quality ingredients were top notch and the preparation and plating excellent, but we just didn't care for the flavors or combinations that came out. We expect when we get a tasting menu to have a few dishes that might miss the mark for us -- that's sort of the point. You're exploring the chef's ideas and dishes. It's strange when none of the dishes really hit with our palates and we travel all over the world in search of amazing food and dining experiences. To make matters somewhat worse, we did the wine pairing and oftentimes with the courses we found the wine did not pair incredibly well with the plates. Further, when the wine was served we never saw a bottle once and were never told about the winery, the vintage, etc. -- only the type of wine it was and what flavors we could expect. We've never had that before with a wine pairing. We encourage the chef to continue to explore his palate, creativity, and imagination and we look forward to the possibility of coming back again some time in the future to see how this chef and menu may have evolved. read more

Pricey but very good. Definitely more in the realm of American dining cuisine which is not what I usually go for for dinner before a weekend. Highly recommend the confit potatoes which are cooked in marrow fat with this really nice cheese cream sauce. Overall I think the highlight of most of their dishes including the Manti Dumplings and Bone Marrow risotto are their sauces which are well rendered, have a nice citrus tang to them (could be strong for some) or bone marrow rendered fat flavor. Service was great at the bar with our server giving us recommendations on how best to have our dishes. Food came out decently quick with the app first then mains. Was very pricey though worth it if you're looking for a nice treat with friends, partners, or family! :) Ambiance was chill and nice overall. This place is the best food in all of Rochester . The most unique and flavorful . If you want to challenge you palate and food knowledge check this place out . I enjoyed the Winter Green Salad . I love the crunch puffed wild rice and the hint of cranberry and apple worked perfectly. I also enjoyed the Bucatini pasta with chestnuts and brown butter . This dish was perfect. Very well balanced and the portion was spot on . The service was great and very friendly. The restaurant was busy but still felt very comfortable. Gourmet food for affordable price and vibes! Every dish I could taste the layers of complexity. The chef creates harmony between fat, flavor, and texture (crunchy, creamy). For example, I got to taste chewy and crunchy fried clam next to this pepper stuffed with buttery soft rice. You mix it with the bed of subtle spicy sauce/ricotta cheese. The fat, spice, acidity, and textures of chew and crunch were just mind blowing. He makes new recipes routinely. Felt the creativity and passion in the food! Definitely get the sourdough naan and dip it in tallegio potatoes. It's like cheese dip but million times better. Comfort food but got tartness and delicious savory flavor. Favorite was the squash dish! It was so autumnal, sweet, roasted, the nuts adding freshness and crunch. The sauce being so comforting and unlike anything I've had ever before. I'd have vegetables like this all the time if I could. Last few points, Service: Our waiter was so friendly, respectful, kind, knowledgeable. I was eyeing a bitter cocktail and he double checked with me if that's my preference and it allowed me to catch my mistake thank God haha. We decided to sit at the bar for cocktails and appetizers, and it turned out to be the perfect choice. I ordered the Apple Margarita from the specials menu, while my husband had the Sherry Picking. Both drinks were beautifully crafted and so delightful that we kept trading sips to compare. For food, we shared the oxtail dish, and it was outstanding. The meat and mushrooms were incredibly tender, bursting with flavor, and every ingredient came together in perfect balance. It was one of those dishes you don't want to end. A big shoutout to Marlin, the bartender, who made the evening even better. He was friendly, attentive, and provided great conversation along with excellent service. All in all, this spot delivered on atmosphere, drinks, food, and hospitality. We'll definitely be back for another round at the bar! read more

Firstly, the service was absolutely unmatched. Exceptional ambience with the perfect amount of lighting and best music. I was excited to try this place although it's not my usually go to it was something new, the restaurant is small and probably not the best place for a toddler. However they did have a few options for kids if you did end up taking your children. Got a few appetizers and entrees and the naan was AMAZING the chicken i ended up going with wasn't that special it was bland and probably not my favorite. They do offer smash burgers which seemed to be popular but you can only get them if you are sitting at bar which I wasn't a fan of since I couldn't sit at the bar and they wouldn't make accommodation for me. The restaurant was clean and very cute. Although I probably won't go back it might be for someone else just wasn't for me. read more

Cute quaint, upscale yet casual restaurant! We all stopped by Marrow for dinner before heading back to Minneapolis. Very surprised and glad that Rochester had this gem! We tried to try as many of Marrow's dishes as possible and had some favorites after this! Our waiter Jeff did a great job giving us recommendations and spacing out all we ordered as well through out our dinner as well. What to get: marrow bones, confit farmers potatoes, hamachi crudo and squash carpaccio. We will have to come back in the fall, because Jeff had let us know that the menu changes every couple weeks ad lib per chef. Went here for my birthday dinner and they did not disappoint! The food was delicious and beautiful (my photos do not do justice). Staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Was in town for business and brought my colleagues. What a great fine. Started at the bar with a lovely rum drink called a Coco-groni. Once we all gathered we were taken to our table. As a group we could not make up our minds so we took a 'Family Style' approach. Our waiter was totally on board and fully managed it for us. As you can see from our pics we ordered multiple dishes, and the staff placed them in the middle of the table with serving utensils. They managed everything perfectly. Not shown was our starter course (we had the sourdough naan, the carrot curry soup and the stuffed mushrooms). This restaurant seems to be a swanky concept that tries too much and achieves so little. The short rib was a tad on the dry side and yet more tender than the dumplings. The manti dumpling dough seemed overworked, and the flavors just didn't come together.The swordfish starter with ribeye cap was a travesty of cadavers, fleshy and fatty but with no acid to balance. Though, the cara cara was pleasantly supportive. Our server, though polite, seemed timid and offered a rather uninspiring overview of the menu that lacked insight or interest. Our second visit-just WOW. And I mean WOW. Great food. Last night we just ate off the starters menu. A Cara Cara orange salad that provided a taste explosion. A spring pea vichyssoise and asparagus salad/soup. Fantastic. Naan bread for dipping in the pea "soup". Remains. A mushroom with black truffle pasta and a sear pate'. And we had the marrow. Oh my. Every dish built upon the other and presented by Jeff the server. Owner Sarah and her chef hubby just outdid them selves. By far, the best damn restaurant around. Worthy of a Michelin star. Based on our experience, I can't imagine there is a less than delicious thing on the menu. The ambiance was warm and relaxing. Understated and well designed. Our server Stephen was outstanding, and the bartender mixes a perfect martini. Other than that, our meal at Marrow was a culinary trainwreck. In the plates we sampled, the ingredients were fresh and good quality and the presentation was adequate. However, the cooking and preparation of all but two dishes was almost comically inept. Granted, we were dining early on a Tuesday, so maybe the kitchen wasn't fielding its A (or even B) team. But it felt like we were being served plate after plate that no one in the restaurant had ever tasted themselves. The two plates that worked: the foie gras custard, though it was very heavy on the quince paste (apparently in response to diner complaints about the uni's fishy taste), and the bucatini, a simple pasta dish. The rest was, frankly, inedible. The lowlights: The "lion's mane meatballs" weren't meatballs at all, but bland blobs of mushroom paste missing any hint of lion's mane and garnished with what we were told by the waiter was walnuts, and by the manager chickpeas, but which tasted and felt like walnut shells (my date and I almost cracked our teeth on them). You'd think a restaurant named Marrow would put some effort into a plate called "marrow bones" -- at least, that's what I was hoping for. What I got was a single section of bone with a dollop of lukewarm, unseasoned, ungarnished marrow piled with cold toppings that would have been more at home on a ballpark hotdog (though the beef tongue pastrami was tasty). It wasn't so much inedible as a dish you lost all interest in eating after the first couple of bites -- a theme for our meal. I can't conclude this review without mentioning Marrow's utter lack of ambiance. I'm all for minimalism, but this space is so soulless and antiseptic it almost feels hostile. I've been in CDC decontamination chambers that were more welcoming. All in all, a disastrous evening, the more quickly forgotten the better. read more

We stopped here after two long, stressful days at Mayo and two disappointing dinner experiences at other well-reviewed restaurants. The minute we walked in the door we sensed that our luck was turning for the better. The restaurant was cozy and inviting without a hint of pretentiousness. I ate at Marrow on a recommendation from a server at another restaurant. The atmosphere is a little sparse for an expensive restaurant, but I thought I'd give it a try. I had 2 great drinks. I also ordered a Pellegrino (I was by myself), and they brought me a liter bottle. It was inexpensive, however, so that was OK. I ordered salad and an entree, and they brought the salad out first. It was a beet salad - pretty good. I ate half of it and stopped because I wanted to save room for the entree. The waiter came by and asked me if I wanted my salad put in a to go box. Huh? I said "No, I'll wait until I'm finished eating my entree." I thought that was weird. I waited over a half hour for my entree. I had lake trout with a crawfish sauce. When I tasted it, I have to say that the fish was good, but there was a ton of sauce on it, and the sauce tasted like smelly socks. It was really bad and mostly flavorless. The waiter came by and asked me how everything was, and I told him that the sauce was not good and that there was way too much of it. He did not acknowledge anything I said, and asked me "Do you need anything else?" I was a little shocked and just said no. Then, when I realized that I might have misunderstood him, when he returned I asked him what he meant by that. He just said he wanted to know if I needed anything else. I ate the fish, but nothing else on the plate. It was really awful, and not something I would expect at this price point. Just because you charge a lot for food doesn't mean that it's good. I talked to the manager and she apologized for the waiter's response (not the food), and again, didn't offer anything to make it right. To be fair, I technically never sent the fish back, but I was surprised at the lack of customer service. Prices are too high for that kind of faux paux. Don't waste your money. read more

Unquestionably all the stars and more! The opening bell started with the Huey take on an old fashion and a margarita with olive oil. Yea. Olive oil. Just a fabulous drink. The two of us had the tasting menu. -which we understand changes as needed be. I wish I had grabbed a menu to point out all we had. Of the 18 choices, we had 11. My ask of Jeff, our accomplished server and dinner guide was provide an outstanding meal. He did not disappoint. He made all the choices, and knocked each and everyone out of the park. This place deserves a Michelin star. No portion of the service, or food or drink, or music choices, or ambience lacked. I have poopoo'd the quality of foodie choices in Rochester. I stand corrected. My buddy and I decided to give Marrow a try on a Friday night, 10/4/24. No reservation but we're able to get seating at the bar with Marlon. He had a true understanding of the complexities of the menu and was able to help us navigate to an amazing dinner. He handled the pacing for us so we had the perfect amount of time to discuss this course before the next one appeared. He started us with 2 small plates. First the Deviled Eggs. Then we moved to the Stuffed Mushrooms with the black garlic sauce. Then 2 medium plates. The Octopus was to die for. Then Rigatoncini which was a great flavor explosion. To finish off our evening he recommended the Danish Donuts and the Homemade Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. What a great ending to a perfect dining experience. Now for the ambiance, the minimal 46 seat house was perfect for an intimate date night or the perfect spot for a proposal but be sure to make a reservation!! Do yourself a favor and put Marrow on the top of your list. You won't be disappointed. read more
