Zio Pesce means "uncle fish" and the decor is hip with fishing related objects on the walls, white table clothes and at least one waiter who translated the menu for us, answered all questions and ensured that not just the meal, but the evening was terrific. We started with a fabulous fish ceviche. Very fresh. Lovely flavor. Next we shared an order of bauletti. Bauletti means little trunks (think suitcases, not swimming). They are little squares filled, in this case, with cod. The bauletti are then cooked in a tomato sauce and bechamel sauce like you'd bake lasagna. It was great. The secondo was crispy octopus (polpo croccante). The octopus wasn't crispy but was grilled and coated with toasted bread crumbs and served on potatoes and greens. What great combination. All of the this was accompanied by cold, crisp lovely vermentino from Sardinia. For dessert we had super fresh strawberries with a lovely sauce I can no longer recall except to say that my mouth is watering thinking about it. This was a great meal and a great evening in a lovely ambience. Zio Pesce is the kind of restaurant you'd drive across town for in Washington or Atlanta or Toronto -- if you could get a reservation . I usually try the yellowfin tuna here, it's super delicious. The fish is seared which means it's heated only at the surface. So, if you don't like raw fish, this is not for you. The fish I comes with potatoes and some green leaves, so quite filling. Zio Pesce has become one of my favorite restaurants in Milan because of the quality of food as well as the dining experience itself. The staff are very kind and attentive, and do what they can to keep you satisfied. Once, they gave us a free bottle of wine just because we had to wait for about 15 minutes (with a reservation). This was far from my expectation considering what I see in some places in Italy. Yes, they care about customers!

It turns out it's been open since 1899, though with much humbler trattoria origins. Now, it's got a sort of Gatsby steakhouse feel with lots of businessmen and Americans because they/we are the only ones willing to pay the upcharge. That said, it was a nice setting and a chance to try some more traditional Milanese dishes near the hotel for an unplanned dinner (reservations are online via the fork). On par with the setting, they do expect you to dress more nicely (no jackets required but maybe not a t shirt). I started with the world's largest aperol spritz, and we got a Rosso Di Moltalcino - a bit young but excellent, especially for the price. They started us with: - A cold fish amuse - Bread, focaccia, sesame crackers with salted parsley butter and saffron butter. Onto food - - Veal tonnato: traditional veal in tuna sauce. The veal was sliced super thin and was just barely cooked, very tender - Risotto Milanese: finally a place that doesn't force you to get a portion for 2! It had a great texture, saffron, and a veal stock - Tagliolini with porcini, parmesan fondue, black truffle - perfect for the fall - Veal ossobucco: cooked down nicely with truffled mashed potatoes (the lemon zest was a bit unexpected) - Spinach side: I just needed some vegetables, but they did a nice job on this They end your meal with some nice petit fours: caramel Italian cookie, strawberry and mango pate de fruit, and chocolate. Service was formal and polite, appropriate for the setting. Pricing is definitely high by Italian standards, but it was a nice setting and was certainly cheaper than what you would pay in the US. This was not my regular style - would I have preferred a small Milanese trattoria where they speak no English? Possibly. But after a long few days of being out while traveling, it was a nice dinner.
