Serpentine is a very well curated boutique - from homeware to motorcycle helmets to skateboards that I'm not even sure you can buy to avant garde jewelry and clothing, they build up a fantastic image and aesthetic. For this I give them props - I love when a boutique commits fully. The workers tend to be dressed fully in the type of clothes they sell, and are pretty knowledgeable about the designers. That being said, this store is very clearly targeted at people who have a LOT of money to spend. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, (and to be honest, it makes a lot of sense, given the prime location and the price of the garms) but what I take issue with is how the store treats people that they don't think will cash out. I've been interrogated about whether or not I would commit to buying something before they let me try it on, and the majority of the people I talk to have similar experiences to share. I've made a few purchases there and they seem to have eased up, but it contributes to a very negative first impression. They also talk shit about the other clothing stores in the area, which I guess fits with their edgy aesthetic. If you've got money and are interested in this sort of designer clothing, Paul and co are great affable folks and I strongly recommend checking out serpentine. If you're looking for a boutique where you can try on geobaskets before buying a pair on grailed, I recommend staying away, because they have no incentive to help you and you won't have a great time.

The Japanese ladies helping us downstairs in the CG vault are super patient, knowledgeable about CG offerings, and provided suggestions for jackets in the right TEI rating for DC winters. Even though I didn't end up buying mine from Due West since we were in a different part of town prior to leaving Toronto, their suggestions helped me narrow down the jacket I eventually bought and love in this weather. They also offer Fusion Fit for petites that we didn't find calling around other CG resellers like Holt Renfrew. The wide-selection and availability in sizes definitely makes this a good spot to get a good dose of goosey warmth.

This store sits on Queen St and just near the hip area of Ossington. Unlike the Ossington spots, Garb's store has the large windows that lets in a lot of natural light. When you first walk into the store, you don't think stereotypical 'consignment'. For starters, lots of items are in well thought out displays, everything is clean and pristine (more on this later), and Dan (the owner) is careful to choose which items he'd feel be sold and not sit on the shelves. Another thing about the store... it's well organized. So you don't feel like you're in a musty and cluttered place... instead everything is organized just to size and by type. Nice and easy to find that special or interesting piece. Working and talking to him was easy... he's very genuine and not once did he give me the look of "why did you buy this" haha... though to be fair, I had tags still on a lot of the items I brought in. I just hang on to things I should let go! He was very fair to price the items and made the whole service a breeze to go through. I do like how he has everything online so if you ever want to check if your item sold... all it takes is to log into your online account and voila! Easy to find. Other places require days for them to catalog and then you have to call in every time you're curious. Nahhhh not here. About the brands they carry... it's definitely premium and often you will find items with a tag on it. Nothing sits for more than 90 days here... for a buyer, it's great as you can items become discounted and find those amazing deals. With consignment, if you want tooo long, someone else can snatch it. Another great thing about Garb is the quality of the items... its all in good shape and if it's a bit dirty, he does ask the consignee to wash or dry clean before bringing it back! Please change the name. …read more What used to be a fairly popular store for tall sizes and large feet has radically slimmed down its selection of made-for-Tall waist and coat and jacket sizes, and we can see all footwear has been eliminated. This is a disaster. Some years ago I'd spend thousands and thousands of dollars at this chain of stores. I'd spontaneously buy things I found there at reg price just because they fit well and looked good. GR actually helped me (6'-6", 36 waist, 15 shoe) build a decent casual fashion wardrobe for some years. and I scooped most anything they stocked that could use, as did other tall slim locals like me (it was competitive and sizes went fast.) Now this is a dead store for me. :-( Not bitter, and thanks GR for the help in years past. It was a uniquely helpful experience for tall men.
