I visited Markey's Lobster Pool on Sunday after not being there for a couple of years, and I have to say I was pretty disappointed. This used to be one of my favorite spots. The steamers were actually very good and probably the highlight of the meal, and overall the food quality itself was still decent. The biggest issue was the fried plates. I always remembered Markey's being known for generous portions, but this time the portions were extremely skimpy and honestly pretty surprising for the price point. When you're paying seafood prices, you expect to leave feeling like you actually got a meal. My husband and his family been coming here for 3 generations and I can't see why. I stopped into Markey's for the two way combo of clams and scallops. I have to say the quality of the clams was not good. I found them to be rubbery and chewy. The quantity of clams and scallops were small compared to the amount of onion rings. I was very disappointed. The clam box in Ipswich is way better. read more

Drove 45 minutes to check Markey's out. The drive was pretty, but the lobster roll, which many described as "generous", wasn't. The small box of scallops contained beautifully executed nuggets, but the lobster roll could never be described as generous, and although cooked properly, had no flavor. It was not worth $35. I have been coming here since I was a kid. I love Markeys but I will say the price and portion situation is out of hand! $35 for a clam plate that barely had clams on it. Over $100 for clam plate, 6 oytsters and steamers. Yowsa. Good times, great food. The last time I was here it was 2010. Back for a visit from my now, home in Tennessee. The only red shelled food you get are mud bugs a.k.a. crawfish so I needed clams and lobstah. [[HIGHLIGHT]]You order at the walk up counter, get your number, and find a seat in the huge dining area or on the open air, covered porch.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I chose to sit outside for the peaceful view.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Before I knew it, my small fried clam box was ready and I helped myself to all the tartar sauce I wanted. No dealing with tiny prepackaged cups that some places ration like gold. Next up, the lobstah and corn on the cob. Best corn I've had all summer. Bright yellow and sweet with some butter and salt, I had my vegetable for the day. The lobster is presented already cracked and dismembered. It's a nice touch if you aren't a lobster cracking expert. I've been going for years. Drove an hour for fish chowder, onion rings, and root beer. They charged me for root beer but they don't have root beer. Not a big deal. My husband and I each got a large fish chowder. Typically they are boiling. Today my husband's was warm and mine was cold. I brought it back expecting them to just quickly pour a new bowl. This was an unfortunate miss for us while we vacationed as a family in Hampton. Our first choice restaurant had over an hour wait and with two hungry boys we figured that wouldn't work. We ended up at Markeys. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was a Monday so easy to park and not crowded. No line to order. I did like the open seating, outdoor seating and pick up style. It works nicely for families with kids and larger groups.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Being able to grab a beer was nice as we watched the sun set. Everyone working that we interacted with was pleasant. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Space was clean, I like the little sink available as you exit for a quick hand wash.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The unfortunate part of this visit was our food. We ordered: two cheese burgers, a grilled cheese, side of fries, two fried seafood platters with lobster add on, side of onion rings. Totaling $160+ The good: my boys enjoyed their burgers and grilled cheese. The burgers were smaller, comparable to a Wendy's Jr Bacon, but looked juicy and were served warm. Grilled cheese looked good and I got the thumbs up from my son. Cole Slaw on both plates was good, wish I had gotten more since it was one thing I enjoyed! The bad: French fries were thick and cold and had zero seasoning or salt, ketchup couldn't save the situation. No one ate them, even my boys opted to pass. Onion rings were under all the seafood so they were warm but again no seasoning and batter falling off. The seafood was sad; scallops and clam strips were the better selection but both had zero flavor. Lacked any natural saltiness from the sea and were a bit soggy. The worst were the Haddock and Lobster. Both were fried in some sort of cornmeal base and it was gritty, dry and again flavorless. (Side note but why don't more places do a beer or tempura batter ) The tartar sauce was also really off for us all. They used a dill relish in it so it was overly tangy versus a bit sweet. Normally I'd power through with extra tartar sauce on top but that was unappealing so while I rarely ever use ketchup, never mind for seafood, I had to, to get through this meal. The ugly: To say it again, not a single thing I ate was salted or seasoned. Good fried seafood shouldn't NEED sauce or ketchup. Salting food as it comes out is a necessity and because they didn't, it really made all the food fall very flat. We ended up taking home and throwing away an almost full fried seafood plate. Needless to say we won't be returning.Not because I can't give a restaurant a second chance or that I don't believe a place can have an off night but the truth is the dollar doesn't stretch far anymore and in a vacation/seasonal spot you really only get one chance (for me) to retain my business year after year. You look forward to that one good vacation meal you're willing to spend extra on, that you wouldn't normally at home, and it's disappointing and regretful when it's not a good one for your hard earned $$ We'll skip Markeys next year and find a new place to try in 2026 read more

Tasteless fried yuck. The calamari had absolutely no flavor, at first I thought I may have COVID. Then I drowned it in their two options for sauce, Heinz ketchup or Heinz tarter sauce. That I could easily taste. We had a fried plate and added lobster. Don't get this if you have dentures. Eating lobster was like tugging on stale taffy. The fish was soaked in oil and had zero redeeming qualities. I could feel oil in my system 12 hours later. There were many young kids working the dining room who sat idle while most tables were filthy. The bathroom was quite unclean too. It was a quiet day and the ambiance was quite nice. Found this place online and just one stop for lunch. We are so happy we picked this one. The lobster roll and lobster salad plate absolutely had a lot of lobster meats! We were stuffed after the lunch. Especially the lobster salad plate: I even doubted if they tripled the lobster meat for me. It was cold lobster with Mayo. If you like it, this should be your go to. Much more meat than the losbter roll. The chowder is also delicious! The place is also cute, right on the side of a little pond. Good view while enjoying the lunch. I ordered a seafood plate, a cup of seafood chowder and a Pepsi. Although the seafood on the plate was tasty there were no shrimp. Overall the flavor was good, cooking oil seemed fresh. The seafood chowder was nothing but broth and a few potatoes, very disappointing. Counter service was manned by teens wrapped up in their social media discussion and I felt they were doing me a favor by waiting on me. The Ambiance was as expected. Clean and clam bar motif. Looking for your seafood fix while hitting up the beaches at Hampton or Salisbury? Markey's Lobster Pool is A-Okay, and can definitely provide that fried goodness that we all desire after a day at the beach. The big hype between Markey's vs. Brown's I can definitely understand... they're literally across the street from one another. So if you're looking to build your own opinion on the debate, than it's definitely worth trying. Things to keep in mind though, they are cash only! They have all the typical seafood options, combo plates, and lobster options that you'd find at any beach side eatery. I found their pricing to be pretty expensive with the average plate being $25-$30 range and their boxes at the smallest size being $20. I got the Scallops and Clam Plate and the Lobster Bisque, I also tried some of my friends Calamari. Scallops and Oysters were on-par with any fried seafood place, but the Lobster Bisque was the big surprise! You could definitely taste the sherry in it though, but they give you full claws and chunks of lobster well worth the $6 price tag. The calamari was a little disappointing, it tasted bland which is unfortunate. Other perks is that you get an awesome view of the saltwater marshes from their outdoor seating! read more

Thought I was crazy for not enjoying my food but after looking over the last few reviews I feel reassured. To start off it was pretty expensive for a small amount of lobster. Took us about 20 minutes to be called up to receive the food and once we were finished, we felt disgustingly sick and had the urge to throw up. I have to admit it was a bit bland.. we jokingly put ketchup on a few bites to help add some flavor. The crab cakes were good but far from the best. We went to Markey's Lobster Pool today and got 2 fried clam plates. One with French fries and one with onion rings. The clams were way overcooked, dry, and tasteless. Fried clams should be a nice golden brown, and should be tender in the mouth. The clams we got today were dark brown, crunchy, and awful. They were so dry, we couldn't even taste the bellies. Oddly enough, the clams on top were hot, the clams underneath the pile were cold. How did that happen? What a waste of $75. The onion rings were greasy. The French fries were the only thing good. We'll never go back there again. My advice is to give this place a miss and save your money. I wish we did. Yuck! read more

Oh Markey's, this review is a tough one... Hit the beach and wanted some nostalgia from the surfing days, had to hit up Markey's on the way home. I was going to let it fly that the fried haddock in the $40 seafood plate (scallops, clams, and haddock) happened to be one small 2 oz piece of fish. I was letting it fly because there were 8 fried scallops and about 10 fried clams. Then I was ready to dive in and try out my nostalgic chicken fingers...little did I know, Markey's now serves cutlets for fingers. Wasn't too thrilled with the sweet and sour sauce that wasn't sweet or sour. I continued on and tried the coleslaw, I was left unimpressed. Finally I moved and grabbed a French fry to dip up in the tarter sauce. Hubby didn't like the French fries, I was again left unimpressed. To be fair though we are spoiled by the Phoenician French fries! The tarter sauce was delish. Unfortunately the tarter sauce isn't enough to make me return again for overpriced cutlets and an overpriced seafood platter. $62 later, let's just say my nostalgia is cured and I'll probably switch to team Browns.
