Had a toilet leak in upstairs bathroom that flooded down into dining room. Insurance sent out MS Construction and Josh was head of remediation (clean-up / tear-out). He was a god send! These issues are bad enough but add into it a tenant and it could have been total chaos. Josh handled it well. Scheduled appointments with the tenants and his team, and got it done quickly. I can't say enough about the professionalism, integrity, and overall expertise of this company. I'd give them 10 stars if I could. We had a rain event during a roof replacement this past April that flooded our home. Our insurance company recommended we use Mark Scott Construction to handle the "pack-out" of all of our belongings and furniture so our home could be repaired. We had already selected a contractor for construction which I now totally regret. I only wish we had selected Mark Scott to do that work as well. They are "old school" when it comes to putting customer service first. We worked with Alex Alas, the GM of the Restoration Division. Alex came to our house and spent time explaining how everything would work, making us feel comfortable with the process. On pack-out day, Alex sent an experienced crew that carefully wrapped, inventoried, boxed, and removed all our our belongings from our home-- from our books and clothing to our paintings and piano. We literally did nothing-- we just watched as these talented men and women wrapped, disassembled, photographed, packaged and inventoried everything in our 3,200 square foot house in a matter of days. When they left, they had removed 10 rooms of furniture and packed 380 boxes of our belongings. Truly amazing to witness. After our repairs were done, Alex sent his crew back to put everything back the way it was. Their foreman, a young woman named Rosa, had an iPad on which she had taken photos of everything in the home. I had asked Alex for a favor. In the rush of packing out, there had been no time to dust our furniture. I offered to pay extra if Alex's crew could wipe down and clean all of our furniture before it came back into the house. Alex said they always clean all the furniture upon return, but in the house. But Alex had the crew set up a "cleaning area" in our driveway-- no extra charge-- and Rosa and her team meticulously cleaned every piece of furniture before it came back into the home. Finally, after moving 10 rooms and 380 boxes of belongings, one would expect some damage. We did have some minor damage to a few items. What impressed me was Alex's way of handling it. Alex has a "whatever you need " and "we will make this right" attitude. Mark Scott Construction was hired to complete a large scale fire rebuild in February/March 2017 in Pacifica, California, a mild coastal town. This was completed in November 2018. So here's the run down. When I was asked to select tile for the bathroom I asked "what size tile do I select"? The supervisor told me to select anything because they could cut it to fit. So I selected a solid white, gray and design combo. Looks nice except the fixtures are off center with the tile in the tub. They did not cut to fit. There was caulking around the base of the toliet but just grout around tub where tile connects and no caulking anywhere else just grout. So recentlI hired someone to do this. I had multiple roof leaks but the roofer seems to have fixed those problems at this time. This is common and understandable. The on demand water heater was hooked up incorrectly so I had a pro reconnect it properly. The fee was passed on to the original plumber. No added expense to me. The kitchen seems to be doing well. However, when I moved in I was told everything was ready for me. So my cat, dog and my things moved back and low and behold my small cat jumped up on the window sills to look out and left nail marks on the "dry" paint where ever she was exploring. She was not clawing the sills. She just hopped up on them. Low and behold underneath the chipping paint no primer to be seen. The sills were the only issue though, not the other window framing so far. The next issue was bubbling paint after a very short period of time on exterior stucco and wood. I requested Benjamin Moore paint, traditionally a good paint. The painters used a sprayer which requires diluting the paint. Attempts were made to fix bubbling but what I discovered when bubbles were addressed there was no primer! Mark Scott sent out painters to fix the issues. The bubbling kept happening. Last year we had a storm and the paint on the stucco started bubbling off down the side of the house (in approx. 2'ft high sections) and part of the front of the house! Yellow paint was found underneath the bubbling paint which was the original color before the fire. No primer. Then the fourth time they were out here a more knowledgeable person came out and scraped off all loose paint and added more primer. That is holding so far. However, reoccurring bubbles in same location kept reappearing. The last time, I saw primer added but they used a sprayer because that was the only option. It bubbled again, 3 DAYS after it was fixed. I sent pictures to the project manager. I said something is not right. Please find and fix. He kept telling me I live in a tempermental climate. Hahahaha...I live near San Francisco, a moderate climate with no extremes. What did he think ? I was enjoying this???? On the can of Benjamin Moore trim paint it says it there is an adhesion problem use their primer but that is mostly covering flashing and trim but possibly applies to the paint. The contractors left the large buckets of paint behind. Last year I decided to look at it to see if was any good. What I found was atrocious. The crew and thrown all the used and dirty rollers into the left over paint in the buckets!!! Now who does that! Someone who hates their job. The cans of interior paint had the wrong lids on the wrong cans so when I took the paint ID color code in to purchase another can it was the wrong color. Consideration thrown out the window. The last bubbling event the project manager said he would speak to the management regarding the request to investigate the cause of reoccurance. Thereafter, he did not respond to my request. He would no longer return my texts with flimsy excuses. So, the most recent event was my roof flashing separating and beginning to rust. Also, trim joints were separating and lifting. I cleaned the trim and flashing and noticed the flashing was showing pits. I hired a handyman with lots of experience and he showed me that no primer was on the flashing under the paint. No caulking or flashing tape to seal was found. So he completed the job, corrected inadequacies. He also found flashing gaps on roof that were incomplete in coverage which he sealed and fixed. I have rental properties myself. All I would expect is that the basics be done correctly so the problems are only basic maintenance for a larger time period. I am not someone making unreasonable requests or using this for "entertainment". It's all added expenses that I should not have to deal with - yet. So my fire damage was categorized as a large scale fire. Large scale fires are essentially considered a new construction and are under a 10-year warranty under construction law. When this construction was underway I was working very long hours and could not be onsite all day. You need to be able to find competent people to do essential jobs. read more

However, the lazy project manager assigned to my brother-in-law's house was a complete slob: imprecise, non-transparent, wanting to communicate only digitally and often disappearing, spewing political rants, bragging about his income and exploits and not taking responsibility for his mistakes. Then getting aggressive about it all in my family's own home. I understand it is customary for construction companies to use cheap messy labor, mismanage their time and lie, but Vince takes it to a new low. A catastrophic fire at a beautiful Victorian I own in the East Bay blew out windows and took much of the second floor off. Mark Scott Construction (MSC) was called by the insurance company to do a board up of the building. They boarded up and used saws to cut a lot of valuable Victorian trim undamaged by the fire (who knows why). I had to have a specialty mill in SF remake this missing 6" wide grooved window trim. They did other damage and their crew was generally careless. They also dumped personal items belonging to tenants causing much additional hassle and grief. I'm a retired contractor myself and I know what I'm talking about. After the botched board-up they supplied a restoration bid at the request of the insurance company, it included low grade materials, white tile, low grade fixtures and was 100k higher than what I was able to restore the building for using Victorian appropriate high grade materials. MSC is focused on easy insurance money where fire and flood victims are a deer in the headlights and follow their huge insurance company that couldn't care less. I managed the restoration myself using skilled craftsmen and the building won an architectural award from the city. I suggest you shop around and get several competing bids at least. Better yet, hire a Public Adjuster and avoid insurance company recommendations. They're not your advocate. As to the response here from MS Construction, the company having no recollection as to involvement in my project only demonstrates the lack of records, likely high turnover of crew and the number of insurance jobs being processed without much care. read more

My insurance company sent them to give me an estimate after a car hit a fire hydrant in walnut creek and flooded my business. They had a way lower estimate than the other companies we called for an estimate. Come to find out they have a back deal with the insurance company that gives them special pricing and rates so customers get a lower pay out. Our kids room flooded from the ceiling last year. We used mark for the restoration of the room and boy did they charge significantly more than a previous provider we had for a different issue in 2020. Not only that, but their operations are a mess. They came, I paid. They called me months later saying they never got payment so I tried to pay by card... twice. They didn't take whatever card I had in their systems. So then I mailed a check, that they never cashed. Then they filed a lien against my property rather than calling (I have the receipts to prove it). Poor business operations. The work was fine. The rates are absurd. Their owner hides behind everyone in his office. Run away and find someone else. read more

My experience with Mark Scott Construction was great from start to finish. I was recommended through my insurance carrier MSC and I was initially apprehensive to sign as there weren't many choices for construction companies that work directly with insurance companies but MSC did a great job coordinating throughout the project, starting with the initial appt of surveying the property. It didn't take me long to sign with them as I felt good about what their company had to offer. Both Frank Capaldo and Don Draper were fabulous to work with and so was their crew! I experienced water damage last year and went through insurance to cover this cost. MSC were accommodating, professional and made the experience more fun because it was an initial headache and very overwhelming to deal with. Don, the main project manager, made me excited about having to repair the kitchen and alleviated a lot of stress by answering my questions along the way. They also kept clear communication, always answered my questions in a timely manner and definitely tried working within my budget and was accommodating of my time and schedule. I felt complete trust with all of their crew to be there when I couldn't be home as I felt like solid work was happening! I worked with Don directly on materials, he helped with choosing countertops and backsplash (because I'm notoriously indecisive) and I felt like I had an interior designer's help. The end results turned out fabulous! My friends always give compliments when they come over. This crew definitely turned into family and I hope to hire them on another project in the future! Mark Scott Construction was doing 3 remodels in our condo building due to fire/water damage. We decided to use them for our complete condo remodel and we are thrilled with the results. Working with Stephen Ricci was the best. He was professional, personable and patient as he guided me thru every step of the estimation process ( there were many). We are grateful for Christian our tile person who was phenomenal, a true artist. He was so professional, thoughtful and asked for my thoughts as he laid out the tiles. The tile and counter jobs in both bathrooms and the kitchen were stellar. Armando and Glenda were others who I worked with who helped make sure that everything was right. Brendan Burke (who is now long gone) was a new project manager in Marin at the time. He was an absolute nightmare in every sense of the word. He had no concept of time management and utter disregard for my many requests. He inflated his resume and it took Stephen time to figure out that Brendan was not the employee that he hoped to hire. On many occasions I was dragging garbage out of our condo along with large appliance boxes and toilets that weren't even ours...Brendan was thoughtless and among other abuses he used our place as a garbage dump. Thanks to Stephen (who turned our project around) and to Christian, Armando and Glenda we have a gorgeous new condominium and highly recommend MS Construction for your Marin construction jobs. read more

We first had Mark Scott Construction out to address water damage from a storm. Their work and team was outstanding. We chose to have them do a remodel of two bathrooms as we trusted their work. We were so happy with that work, we had them out this summer to do a remodel that required removal of some interior posts, fireplace and landing. We are so happy with the outcome. We would not hesitate to recommend them. They are a pleasure to work with, professional, thoughtful, on time, and great to work with. read more
