Biggest issue with the session was Mark's constant reference to cost and condecending tone when providing 'advice' about working with a HOA, which suggested he did not assume we could afford to remodel our home. This caused me to suspect he is not accustomed to working with people of color, but in the spirit of experiencing a teachable moment, if someone agrees to pay you over $200 above your typical fee to get you to travel outside of your normal geographic range of services to draw up a plan for a renewed front yard, it is probably safe to assume they understand the concept of a HOA and can afford to buy the desired plants and hire landscapers. read more

Mark Murphy helps bring your outdoor vision to life! He was extremely enjoyable to work with, and had a very quick turnaround time. We exchanged messages and a phone call the same day I found him on yelp, and he was at my house the next morning. He starts by walking with you through your property and talks to you about what you would like done. You then sit with him in your home while he sketches out a design in full color. The whole process took about two hours. He will sketch ideas in pencil for a discussion, have you look up what various plants, trees, and other things are on a tablet, and helps you make decisions about how to lay out your project. Once you land on an idea, he goes back over it in pen and color to really help illustrate the vision. He thinks through how your guests might arrive at your home and walk through your new landscaping or patio and the stories they might share after they leave your home. You can tell he really is a true artist and is passionate about what he does. For the design, he charges $270 but says if you don't think it will be helpful to you at all there is no charge! He also leaves you with a list on contractors relevant to your job and lets you either coordinate the rest, or for $135 an hour will continue to work with you and manage the contractors for you; however he encouraged my husband and I to run with the design on our own, so it's clear he isn't in it just for the money. His questions helped me recognize my wife and I had conflicting ideas. He then helped come up with a balanced design that met both our visions. Working with Mark was easy and enjoyable.
