She first started working with me when I was around 14 years old, and had to deal with maryland bridges due to two of my front teeth missing from a congenital defect. Not only is she extremely thoughtful towards the cosmetic side, she is extremely precise and excellent at what she does. She is also just a very sweet, lovely person. I always found the staff very sweet, aside from one hygienist who lectured me about electric toothbrushes and their importance. (I knew the importance, and I am extremely hygienic, so I felt that she was trying to tell me I wasn't cutting it, which is just weird.) Anyhow, Dr. Robinson got rid of her. They saw me right away and I had my X-rays done by the only nice person I met in the building. I then saw the dental hygienist. It seemed like the entire point of her "exam" was to shame and scare me into spending an absurd amount of money on their dental plan. When I told her it had been a while since my last cleaning, she said "I can tell." She showed me a photo of my gums and said "Do these look like healthy gums to you?" The dentist dismissed my pain and blamed it on a medication I've been taking for months. After you have your visit, they have you check out with a sales person disguised as an associate who tries to pressure you into signing up for their high interest credit plan. They said my treatment plan would cost approximately $7,000 with insurance. When I stated I couldn't afford that, she said she would check with the dentist to see what was "absolutely necessary." It can back to around $4000. I left. I went to Baystate Dental the next day and paid $80 for a procedure that alleviated my pain. I'll have another procedure for the same cost in six months and my issue should be resolved - a far cry from $7000. I'm a medical professional myself and I would never make a patient feel this way. I know that in these times many people have to choose between daily living costs and medical care. Maybe I would have fallen for their scheme if they treated me with any type of respect and understanding, as I was in so much pain. This practice is clearly exploiting vulnerable people with dental emergencies and using high pressure sales tactics to get people to spend money they don't have. I'd recommend going anywhere else.

They did an x-ray of my teeth which took about 30 minutes and tried to convince me to book a specialty cleaning that was going to cost $3,000. I decided to get a second opinion from a different office and didn't wait any time to be seen, got the x-rays done in less than 5 minutes, and was given a full cleaning. Do not go to this dentist!

In terms of culturally responsive practices, this dentist gets a negative score: voice dripping with sarcasm, he told me that my teeth were not something he could help me with given that my jaw is "deformed" (I have an overbite, but it's like that of most people with overbites and not exactly something that you would stop on the street and gawk over) and that my dental decay (from years of bulimia that eroded my enamel) was not something he would handle. (He said he could handle it but chose not to, almost enjoying the sense that he was denying me treatment.). Let me be clear that it's not the information this practitioner conveyed that I want to warn people about: it's the flavor of open disrespect and even shaming he felt comfortable expressing, as though having "good teeth" were a sign of moral integrity. Remarkable that in 2024 in the Pioneer Valley, there are still some medical and dental practitioners who don't consider it among their professional duties to conceal whatever prejudiced beliefs they hold about their patients' health. The ideas about dentistry lodged inside this man's head are the stuff of mid-nineteenth century England: if you were a quality or refined sort of person, you would be born with a well-aligned jaw, and if you have bad teeth, it must be that you are an essentially gross, lazy, degraded person. I had the bad luck to choose this practice at random, and now I've lost that insurance-covered visit. Shame on this practitioner, and if you have any kind of non-normative identity or dental situation, beware of this practice. Edited to add: This practitioner recommended that every single tooth be removed from my mouth. The oral surgeon refused to do this as it was too radical a treatment plan and sent me to a new dentist for a new consult because more than half of my teeth can obviously be salvaged by an unbiased practitioner willing to do the work of real dentistry. Boutique dentists should advertise themselves as boutique dentists so that real people with real human dental situations don't make the mistake of seeking treatment from them.
