I went to Mariposa fully expecting nothing special because who assumes a restaurant inside a department store will impress. I was wrong. This place is an experience. Finding it feels like a scavenger hunt inside Neiman Marcus at La Cantera. If you blink you will miss it. Walking up the escalator with white butterflies floating above already sets the mood. The second floor feels calm and hidden which makes the reveal even better. Once inside the space is bright and peaceful with windows wrapping around the dining room. We were greeted with warm popovers and broth which alone are worth returning for. I ordered the salmon fish tacos with chips pico and salsa. They were excellent. Many places try and fail at fish tacos but these were balanced flavorful and perfectly cooked. My husband ordered the pear and gorgonzola salad with salmon and loved it. The view feels tucked away in nature with trees as the backdrop. Service was warm attentive and polished. We will absolutely be back. This one surprised me in the best way. read more

It's hidden upstairs in the rear, right corner of Neiman Marcus. The food and service was so top-tier that I went twice during the holiday. There's open seating at the bar which has exceptional service. They have a variety of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks to choose. I had the salmon and bone broth. I must say the bone broth was amazing! And please try their homemade bread with the homemade strawberry butter! We stopped by the Mariposa, after a day of shopping at Neiman. Our server was so nice, I forgot to get her name for the review. I ordered the honey martini with the salmon tacos and a ahi tuna app. Before they bring your order they start you off with a croissant and a side of strawberry fluffed cream cheese along a warm corn tea on the house. The ahi-tuna was well seasoned and the wonton chips were so good we ordered extra to finish the portion. Everything was delicious, I thought the salmon tacos would be bland but to my surprise it was a generous amount of salmon along with cabbage, cilantro and fresh jalapeños. The salmon tacos came 3 in the order with a side of pico de gallo and seasoned tortilla chips. My kiddo got the turkey, bacon, avocado sandwich and it was generous in serving. I believe if I was to take count of the times I have visited Mariposa, I've eaten here more than a few times over the years and yet, every time, I am impressed with a new small detail. Overall, the Mariposa experience is a good one. Food is always pretty good and service is always wonderful. I do remember it being more affordable, but I guess that has changed with time. This time around, they served a complementary croissant with a berry butter and a small cup of broth. I had the chicken sandwich with chips and a glass of rose wine. I substituted the chips for truffle fries. All of it, pretty good and in a very comfortable atmosphere. As mentioned before, prices were on the high side, and certainly, not a match for the food. The chicken sandwich came out to $21 dollars. It was originally $17 dollars, but with the fry substitution, it was higher. Something, by the way, the serving staff neglected to mention. So although, I would recommend Mariposa food wise, prices make this less likely to be a frequently visited place for me. read more

Came on a rainy afternoon to meet a friend and was greeted by the hostess and led to the outdoor patio seating. It was rainy so it was very relaxing with the outdoor decor. We were given a puffed up bread with what seemed to be a strawberry butter. I ordered a margarita and it was pretty strong but good. I also got the salmon nicoise which was delicious but overpriced at $28. $18 would be more like it. Truffle fries were good, I love the dip. We also got the cheesecake which was good but didn't enjoy the burnt outside, and the chocolate torte was good but very rich like eating a chocolate truffle right out of a box. Between two people, we got 2 cocktails, one appetizer, two entrees, and two desserts. Total came out to $120. Over all it was good food and great service. You probably wouldn't know about this place unless you're a regular Neiman Marcus customer or happen to hear about it from someone. It's on the Second floor of Neiman Marcus. Once you come up the escalator, make an immediate right, walk towards the "home/gift" section and there should be signage on the left directing you towards the restaurant. Mariposa has a very modern upscale ambiance. The balcony seating is very nice with views of the hill country and the Superman roll coaster nearby. For the first time, we decided to go for brunch on Saturday during restaurant week. I decided to order from the restaurant week menu so I could have a chance to try many things. I did peek at the regular menu and the average price of entrées range $18-30. The service was very attentive and friendly. They bring out fresh popover bread with strawberry butter and chicken consomme. Both were delicious and delightful precursor to the meal. All of our food was very good and well executed, but nothing to "write home" about. The flavors and food offerings were not anything that you couldn't easily get from another restaurant of the same caliber (or even of a lower caliber). If I come back to dine here it will be mostly for the ambiance and service, not so much for the food. I come to Mariposa because it is tucked away on the second floor of Neimans at La Cantera. Very few people know it is up here. It is quiet and I never have to wait for a seat. The staff is attentive and professional. The view and lighting are amazing. You can see the tops of the roller coasters at fiesta texas nearby. The restaurant has outdoor seating but I like the cool interior. The best part of the meal is the very beginning. Humongous, crisp and buttery popovers served with strawberry butter are the highlight of my meal. I love tearing into them and watching the steam rise. A perfect popover should have a hollow center and these definitely do. I wish I could put the strawberry butter in a jar and take it home. It's lightly sweet and not too heavy at all. I could do without the chicken consommé but it's part of the experience. If you are a fan of tea like me, do order it here. They used to serve Mighty Leaf, which I love but they serve another loose leaf brand now that is also incredibly delicious. I highly recommend coming here if only for tea and dessert. But if you are here for food, almost everything is good. I prefer the baked chicken and I love the hamburger. There is better and cheaper food at La Cantera but for me, good company and relaxing atmosphere are incredibly important. Very sad situation to walk into a half full dining room and the hostess lets us know (party of 4) it would be a 30 minute wait (four parties ahead) because there was only ONE person in the kitchen. Neiman Marcus is a high end retailer with high end prices, including Mariposa, but with very low end service. It would have been better to just close the restaurant today. The hostess was visibly embarrassed having to let clients know about the delayed service. Never heard back from customer service on this thread either. Came for lunch on a Saturday for a table of 7 and got seated within a few minutes. The restaurant has lots of natural light and is set in a very comfortable setting. Our waiter, Javier, was very patient with us. Do get: Tuna tartare appetizer - they only give a tiny cup of wonton strips so ask for more crab cake more popovers and strawberry butter! Do yourself a favor. Satay away from this place. Right from the moment my wife and I walked in. Karina Benitez was very rude and plain out nasty. Before even saying hello she right away told us she only had tables outside. We could clearly see plenty of available tables inside but we said fine we will take the outside table, it was like lighting a fire she did not like that and took us outside throwing things around and assigning us to the corner dirty table even if we could see plenty of clean available tables so we just left. What the???!! was my reaction when a colleague suggested lunch and walked me into Neiman Marcus....and sure enough after the housewares on the left and the hideous (looks and price!) pant racks is Mariposa! A semi fine dining restaurant in a department store! The place is filled with ladies who lunch and a general Saks crowd. Service is quick, friendly and efficient. We started with a cup of warm broth and a popover (this is complimentary with every meal) which was delightfully perfect, nice chewy crust outside and a very tender moist inside! This thing disappeared in my stomach (and always does) in a second and I of course being greedy asked for another. The waitress looked askance at my gauche behavior, but did bring me another with a smile. The food has been excellent from the well made Cobb salad, a perfectly cooked salmon with tender-crisp sauteed asparagus spears, to a refined steak medallion with a savory wine reduction. Oh and god help you at your naive thought that one order of the cookies will be enough! We popped into Mariposa during Restaurant Week, service was incredible but the food didn't have a "wow" factor. First of all, who knew there was a restaurant in Neiman(2nd floor)? The interior is breathtaking with blue glass, a beautiful bar, a posh balcony, and white linens. We were quickly greeted with a smile by a lovely hostess who sat us right away. We showed up right at 11am when it was still empty, the place was quite full by 11:30. Oscar, our server, introduced himself and brought us a cup of broth and a hot popover muffin with strawberry butter, you guys, you MUST go for the muffins and butter, WOW! The broth took me back to a memorable turkey bone soup I had in the past, I treasured every sip! We started with a tortilla soup and a romaine and arugula salad. The soup was fantastic and I wanted to kick myself for not ordering it, the broth alone had me savoring the only bite my friend allowed me to steal. My salad was on the mushy side but I really enjoyed the artichoke element. My ginger-chili glazed salmon over black quinoa and friend's lemon chicken paillard were underwhelming and I could easily whip up something like this at home. Desert was alright, the NM chocolate chip cookie box was a cute idea but the cookies were brought out cold in a box, our server was happy to warm them up for us. We were told that the cookie box would come with their recipe but ours didn't (boo). Dino's cream and lace cake looked delicious but my friend and I could only tolerate a bite, too much going on. I had the chance to look over their lunch menu and most items are pretty expensive but it's perfect for a girls lunch (like Danielle T. said).
