I don't know what has taken me so long to get to Avvio. I'm a Cranston native and have been back…read moreliving in Cranston for over four years. For some reason, this restaurant just hasn't been on my radar. I was craving a good woodfired pizza and there aren't too many restaurants that make me a Neapolitan style pizza. While theirs is not officially Neapolitan, it's pretty damn close. I am a fan of Margherita pizza with prosciutto and heaping ton of basil. So that's what I ordered as well as some cocktails. I've now been three times in the past month, and I've gotten to try several different drinks on their menu, but I never deviate from the pizza. The pizza is a little on the small side, I would like it to be a little bit bigger, but it is absolutely delicious. It has hit the mark every single time. The sauce has excellent flavor, it's clear they use a simple recipe with San marzano tomatoes which is a staple for Neapolitan pizza . The prosciutto is good quality, as is the mozzarella. My mom had the chicken Parm and very much enjoyed it. The service here is truly excellent. I've had three different servers and each time they were incredibly attentive, consistently checking in and making sure my water was refilled. I drink a ton of water, and a lot of times at restaurants I have to try to flag someone down or even go to the bar to get a refill and that has never happened and I doubt will in my experience here. They have a decent wine list and a great cocktail list. This is one of the few restaurants that has lavender simple syrup, which is one of my favorite things ever because I am a huge fan of lavender gin cocktails. The two purple drinks pictured are a lavender gin cocktail that I always request and it was made wonderfully each time. I've also sampled the espresso martini with half Baileys and half Frangelico and it was one of the best espresso cocktails I've had. Finally, I tried the pretty in pink, which is on their current cocktail menu. The drink itself tasted fine, it has lavender in it, which is a favorite as well as gin, but the glass that it served in is more like a whiskey on the rocks glass. It would have been better in a coupe or martini glasses, which is what I would expect one given the name, for presentation purposes, but also functionality. It has Aperol foam on top, and due to the glass and the fact that there was ice in it, the foam kind of dripped down the glass and made it very sticky and unpleasant to drink. I ended up asking for a straw which helped a lot, but I would recommend to the bar to change this to a coupe glass because it would be more functional, and the ice is not needed. The drink itself had a nice taste, and I would order it again with some adjustments. The bathrooms have always been kept clean every time I've utilized them. When you walk in, there is first a bar area which has ample seating and high tops, and then the main dining room, which is minimally decorated but classy looking. The kitchen is an open concept so you can see into it while you eat. Avvio is going to be a monthly if not weekly stop for me. Highly recommend.

The fries were just as impressive, crispy and addictive in the best way. A special shoutout to Anya and Tom behind the bar--they were attentive, friendly, and provided excellent service throughout. The meat is sooooo juicy, tender and flavorful! Next would be obviously their pizza and their salad! (please note: their salads is topped to the BRIM! And if good enough to share with 2-3 people) Depending on the day in the mood would determine which pizza I get my top 3 are/ Gold digger, the San Genaro, and the Marilyn Monroe/Fign' a (I can't decide LOL) don't let the commotion of Rolfe square Seder you from visiting, there is plenty of parking in the back, the restaurant is such a vibe with the decor (learn some Italian LOL) and hilarious placemats. And lastly, what I think is so cool and unique about this place is their Themed Weekend specials! They always have fun drinks and witty names for the items. Oh and don't forget to swing by the dessert case on your way out- they have LEMON TIRAMISU!!!! You heard right! LEMON TIRAMISU!!

We had Jessica and she was perfect. Such a sweetheart even accommodating when my always late sister- was late. She patiently waited and took care of my fiancé and I while we waited. She was full of energy, professional and she made sure to take care of my sister as it was her birthday. We got the deviled eggs and steak tacos as apps they were very good. A little pricey for here deviled eggs which only came with 3 but they were good. I ordered the eggplant parm, it was pretty good. I've had better but it was flavorful and a decent size, not that many eggplant pieces though. My sister ordered the salmon and she loved it. My fiancé ordered the Tuscan sausage orcchiette and he enjoyed it also very well. It was on the smaller side for a meal, but he enjoyed it. I also had the Lychee drink which I swear by them, they're so good! Overall we enjoyed our time. I do think it's a bit overpriced for some things but overall I would come back.

We put in our drink orders (four waters) and ignored for a little while longer. We put in our food orders, and my kids wanted broccoli. My thought was they could share a side if it was large, but she said they were on the smaller side. They weren't, they were huge, and $5 each because I didn't realize a side didn't come with the kids meal, and it wasn't explained. My husband got veal parm, which he said was good, yet difficult to cut with a butter knife. I got eggplant parm, which was mediocre at best. Most Italian restaurants, for whatever reason, like to put a gloopy pile of macaroni on the plate with a spoonful of sauce on top with nothing mixed together. With the eggplant, they not only did this, but also put eggplant on top of that. You can't cut unpeeled eggplant on a soft surface, so the macaroni was decimated until I had enough room to pull it out from under the eggplant. We were sat in a corner booth, I slammed my elbow into the unforgiving marble window sill twice, there was a crazy cold draft, and I was getting sick over the stench of fabric softener coming in from God knows where. So overall, a pretty disappointing visit.

This place could be so perfect with only a couple small changes! - There are white flourescent style lights on the ceiling. This really kills the vibe. It's almost like the top of the restaurant and the bottom don't match. You have cozy, 70's style wood paneling with dark wooden booths and stained glass lights hanging over the tables. Warm, cozy and intimate. Then, bright white lights above. I'd love to eat here with those bright lights turned off sometime. - Probably not economical but red checkered tablecloths, like vintage Italian restaurants used to have would make this place look like a movie set in a good way. That being said, everything else about this place is cool ... you know a good spot by how many regulars are there and everyone seemed to know everyone else by name on a Tuesday night. It wasn't crowded ... but it wasn't empty on an off-night. - The staff is exceptionally good. The waitress and hostess couldn't have been any sweeter and more helpful. Fast refills on the soft drinks and helpful without being intrusive. - The pizza is good. I have to admit, I am not sold on the cheddar cheese vs. mozzarella. I thought it would give the cheese an interesting, sharper taste but it seemed a bit bland. I will do the Italian-style next time with mozzarella. I liked my pizza but there was just something different about it. The crust is Greek-style ... kind of like the old Pizza Hut, when it was actually made fresh. Back in the 1980's and 90's there was nothing better than a golden, buttery light and crisp pizza crust from Pizza Hut, before the brand went to shit. This reminds me of that goodness of 1980's pizza crust. I'm not a thin crust guy ... but if you are, they have a thinner crust on the menu as well. Topping was good, maybe a bit spicier pepperoni would be a bit better ... toppings are a tad expensive for a few slices of pepperoni. A 3-topping pizza adds around $5. The small is good for two-people with light/moderate appetites. I wouldn't be able to eat a small and a salad by myself. Speaking of the salad ... one of the best regular house salads I've ever had. The dressing is amazing ... tangy, salty, perfectly done. I know it's hard to get all worked up over a standard Italian dressing but often the simplest things in cooking are the hardest to get right ... and they get the dressing right! Also, the lettuce was super fresh and the tomatoe slices were as well. The only issue I had was there was no 'side salad' version. There was a 'small' salad for around $8 ... but that could easily feed 2 - 4 people. Overall, this place gets just about everything right. It doesn't change or modernize. It's portions are great ... the food is very good ... prices maybe a bit high compared to other spots ... but you can tell they don't cut corners and everything is freshly made. The bar is where I'd want to sit normally ... but the seats are very close together and I didn't want to be elnow to elbow with strangers, so I snagged a small booth, which was also fine. The customers seemed nice ... but they all seemed very 'Cranston'. If they could deal with the lighting situation and make it less bright, I'd eat here 2 times per week. You can't beat a classic ... and this place is a classic.
