Burgers made Mariner's famous and for obvious reason. After 20 years or more I return to former haunt to find Mariners thriving. Some things have changed--more seating after they took over an abandoned gas station next door. Some things are just the same, including the decor and signs on the wall, and a greatly expanded menu. But the burgers haven't changed a bit and thank goodness for it. Still made fresh and cooked absolutely to perfection. I had the mushroom cheddar burger because it was a fav of mine so many years ago and was delighted to find it unchanged. This "Port of Call" knock-off on the North Shore used to serve only a baked potato with their burgers, dressed up in so many ways. I noticed some folks ordering the impressive spuds with their burgers, but I decided to have the onion rings instead, simply because there was no way I could eat a huge potato and a huge burger, although it seemed not to be an obstacle decades ago. On the Sunday I visited, which was also the day after Christmas, downtown Hammond was a ghost town, but the lunch crowd at Mariner's was still impressive. Called and made reservations for 18 people after my son's high school graduation. The manager was fantastic, extremely helpful with the arrangements- calling me twice to make sure that we would be cared for. Everyone was happy with the food, but the prime rib and tuna was over cooked and the French fries had a chemical taste (we figured that the oil was old). We've always received great service here! This is a good place to kick back and have some drinks. The drinks can be pretty cheap and especially a good deal if you order by the pitcher. I like that there's no smoking inside since it's also a restaurant. It can be noisy if you sit in the back by the pool table depending on what kind of crowd is there (and how late it is). If you don't like it inside, there's always the covered area outside. As another reviewer mentioned, it is basically Hammond's "Port of Call" for all who have been to the one in NOLA. The burgers are decent. Make sure you specify exactly how you want it - especially if you are picky about how well (or not) you like your meat. The food can be a hit or miss depending on what you're looking to eat. Example: The gumbo is very thick and tomato based, and I was disappointed as I was expecting a roux based one. It has grown on me over time though. I have better luck (in terms of taste/flavor) when I order things that are typical bar food: burgers and appetizers/snacks. The other items I've tried (blackened tuna, grilled chicken, etc) are average. I feel that some of the higher priced items aren't worth it. First of all, probably the worst service I have ever had. We sat ourselves down and then were greeted a few minutes later by who i assumed was our waitress... she took our order immediately because we knew what we wanted. We got our drinks and food at the same time, decently quickly, however my sweet tea was unsweetened and very burt. I got a house salad that was topped with immitation bacon so hard it hurt my teeth. My boyfriend's baked potato that was supposed to have cheese and butter came out with no butter and cheese and bacon, and we were then charged for the bacon we did not order as well as a tea i could not drink the entire meal. I had to share 1 glass of water that my boyfriend ordered the whole meal because no one came to our table, not even to refill his drink. After we explained the issue to another waitress who was doing basically everything for us, our original waitress did not come apologize or even bring us our revised check. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in Hammond, but not anymore. The meal I got today was terrible and believe me, that's the only way that I could describe it. It was delivered via Waitr, but I used them several times and never had a problem. I was so hungry for one of their steaks, so I ordered the "small" ribeye, baked potato loaded and salad. The garlic toast was the best item I ate. The salad was nothing but a salad mix from the store. That was the second best item. The baked potato came with fake bacon bits, hardly any cheese and was old/reheated. Thank goodness I asked for sour cream. It helped! The steak was anything but "medium." It was thin to begin with. I went to Mariners last year and really didn't like the po boy I got. After a year or so, I finally gave it another try tonight. Many people rave about it so I thought it was fair to give it another chance. The restaurant always smells very musty when you walk in and my table tonight was fairly dirty and sticky. Tonight I tried both the wings and hot strips. The wings were very cold and the hot strips were just okay, mine were drenched in sauce so it was almost too soggy to enjoy. My two stars are awarded as the service wasn't awful and the food came out relatively quickly. I wish I could enjoy this place as much as others do. read more

Their ranch dressing is the best I've ever tasted in my entire life and it's what keeps me coming back. I put it on their baked potatoes, dip their tuna steak and onion rings in it, and adore their side salads. The cucumbers are always crispy. The atmosphere is relaxed. Sometimes they have a band outside and it's far too loud to talk. We skip those nights, but it would be good to take a date to that you really didn't want to have to talk to. What a terrible excuse for a restaurant. I ordered to-go and of course when I got home realized the nacho chips were stale, didn't use the right cheese so the whole entree was melted to the styrofoam plate and it was just gross. Not that great. I had a chicken salad with blackened chicken (upcharge for blackened vs. grilled or fried). It came with fake bacon bits, canned mushrooms, a huge pile of shredded cheddar cheese. There was a little bit of lettuce (bag mix) and maybe a couple of slivers of bell pepper. If you're getting this salad as a healthy option, you may be disappointed. I could have gotten about the same thing from a fast food joint. My kid got the buck-a-roo burger, which he liked, but he's 8. Didn't come with tomato cause that's also extra. The food here is literally horrible and the restaurant itself is just gross. The place looks like it hasn't been deep cleaned/dusted in years... The menu was so bizarre and didn't look good at all.. I ordered cheese fries because that seemed like the least nasty thing on the menu. They were okay I guess. First off I love the atmosphere! Our waitress was super nice and actually acted like she cared. You could tell she was really busy but still one of the best waitress I've had. I got a fried shrimp Poboy and my girlfriend got a burger with mushrooms and Swiss. The Poboy was amazing and so were the fries! What a disappointing dinner last night. We got the ribeye steak specials, 11 oz., which I remember from the last time I went there, as being pretty decent. The cuts were nothing but gristle and fat, almost impossible to eat. We both soldiered through about half of the steak, leaving the bits that just would not be chewable, and just left the rest. The house salads had lettuce leaves with brown edges and the cucumber in the salad must have been refrigerated with fish. Last night, three friends and I went to Mariner's. We sat outside at the table and waited for someone to come. We sat for 20 minutes before I walked inside to speak with a manager. During the 20 min wait, we saw a waitress in a green top walk out and serve others as we waited. In addition, she sat on a table, spoke with a male, took out her phone while continuing to converse with this person, then gather her things and walk past us back into the restaurant. I walked to the bar and asked to speak to a manager and the same girl said there was none (which is difficult to believe) and asked me if she could help with anything. I explained that we weren't provided with any service during our 20 min wait and we were waiting to order. She went on to explain that she brought us drinks and couldn't understand why I said we hadn't been served. I told her she was mistaken bc we did not have anything on our table. She explained the kitchen closed at 12 (it was 12:29 at this point) and asked if we wanted to drink. I replied yes, but I couldn't order because I was with a group. Long story short she never serviced us! I have to say I'm disappointed but then again I expect this type of service. It's unfortunate that we were disregarded as customers and shown that our money and patronage was not welcome. Mariner's is a great place for a burger. Any time I go to hammond, I find it somewhat challenging to resist the urge to go in and order a cheeseburger. Generally, the only thing that keeps me from resisting that urge is the price. A cheeseburger from mariner's is going to run you $10-12 once you've added tax and a tip. I like to tip well here because the service is always great. The pitchers are nice as well, I recommend the lemonade stand or the long island. read more

Mariners has been my go to for many, many years in Hammond. It's good on your own, but it's even better with the company of friends. It does seem more sanitized than it used to be in some way. Maybe it's perception, or a simple change of the times. The food is always about the same. Good. It's not Antoine's, but it's good pub food. The last time I went I had the Monday special, red beans and rice, and it was particularly tasty. I did notice that service seems to be a little bit nicer than it was around 95 or so. 4.6 so I'm rounding up to 5 stars. The food is exceptional. Huge portions. Started with jalapeño crab stuffed peppers. Big, succulent peppers and a lot of REAL crab stuffing. Shrimp PoBoy. Huge serving filled with delicately fried shrimp. One of the chicken sandwiches, I think it had ham and Swiss cheese. The breads are freshly made on site, so that's a huge plus. Had the PoBoy on the French bread. The chicken on Texas toast. Perfect decision. So, why not a solid 5? There was a bit of confusion as to who was our server, so we didn't order when ready. Otherwise, when we got a server, he was attentive and great. Oh, and there was a mix up on one of the side dishes. But all in all, a solid choice for dining in Hammond. read more
